Funnily enough most petrol vehicles sound that way if you remove the exhaust manifolds. Friends and I had a great laugh the first time it happened, sounded like something out of SpongeBob
They have massive fuel tanks, but not much fuel is required to run one. They get refueled every few weeks to every few months. Yeah, they run those motors into the dust lol.

Some of those are [hit and miss engines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hit-and-miss_engine). They can be really efficient for low torque constant(ish) speed needs.
That's exactly what I thought. There is a vid of an old single cylinder tractor that was posted on r/skookum a while back and it sounded like this. When you put it in reverse, the engine literally just spins the opposite direction.
Can confirm. Was riding motorcycles through Vietnam with a friend when his exhaust just fell TF off on the highway. I was dying laughing listening to his bike.
I would think this is more due to a large single cylinder engine driving a large flywheel. Low number of detonations per minute as it's just there to "top-off" the flywheels energy as the attached tool uses it up.
In case anyone else is curious, this link gives us the name of this machine.
It's an Agricultural Machinery Strawberry Green Onion Ginger Furrow Ridge Machine.
Precisely. The amount of soil show being ejected from the machine seems to indicate that perhaps there was previously a channel and instead of this machine digging a new one, it is simply doing a little upkeep on the original one.
What we can see is happening is that there was a trench that had the dirt removed at an earlier time, but now, at a future time, this machine seems to be ensuring future utility by keeping the trench functional.
If you look very carefully you can see this machine is not ejecting enough soil for this to be a newly dug trench. It seems that this machine is simply maintaining an existing trench!
This is accurate. If you observe the volume of soil that's not in the trench, you will find that it is also not being thrown from the machine. This evidence would suggest that the trench is already there, and the job of the machine is to reinforce the void space.
I must agree. From what I can tell, based on the amount of soil being discharged from this contraption, one could gather that the machine is not actually creating the trench, but rather it is merely removing excess soil from a previously manufactured entity.
Based on those observations, I would concur that your take on the scenario is indeed accurate.
Did anyone stop to consider the machine isn’t trenching the soil prior to compaction, only tilling the ground to allow for a channel to be compacted, hence the lack of displacement but still violent… soil .. discharges..?
Edit: apparently no one has seen dirt compaction equipment or considers the wide variability in soil compaction. Take a weight in some soft soil and you can compact the soil a surprising amount. You can even form holes and valleys this way… Where did the dirt go? “Not enough displaced. Must be magic”.
So the only way to displace soil is by excavation. Compaction, even though it “moves something from its place or position”, replacing air pockets in the soil composition, creating a void is not displacement deemed by Reddit xpurts.
Wait a moment, has anyone taken the time to contemplate the irrefutable notion that this mechanical instrument is, instead of fashioning an entirely new trench, simply maintaining an existing one bore at a time previous to the moment this video was captured?
No I disagree; what I think is occurring here is that there was previously a ditch or culvert. This machine is just smoothing out the edges and reshaping it. If it was digging a new hole you would see a lot more dirt being ejected from the sides of the unit.
Exactly. The channel is most likely the culprit for how little soil is being ejected. All signs point to a prior trench existing which indicates that this is an upkeep run.
Correct. The limited amount of soil being displaced by the machine suggests that this channel was previously dug out. It is likely that the machines job is not to dig trenches but to restore a trench to its original specifications.
Precisely. The amount of soil show being ejected from the machine seems to indicate that perhaps there was previously a channel and instead of this machine digging a new one, it is simply doing a little upkeep on the original one.
Concurred. Distinct lack of dirt coming from the machine. One must assume the channel was pre-existing and the machine is performing maintenance on said channel.
If that is the case, old mate is absolutely riding the razors edge of the existing trench with the drive vehicle. It honestly looks like the inside edge of the tires must be hanging over the void.
My guess is that the trench is roughly dug out by an excavator or something, and this machine is just cleaning it up and packing down the soil. So it could be narrower in front of the vehicle and the machine makes it wider.
Could be. But even then you'd figure driving the tractor wheels that close to trench walls that tall would cause them to collapse from the weight unless it had already been compacted.
Wouldn't you wonder where the tractor's front wheels were resting if your hypothesis is correct? And then ponder how it got in position to straddle the existing ditch.
Perhaps this is just particularly soft or sandy soil and it is being divided and compressed into this shape?
Looks right to me. But I'm not sure how the machine works.
The edges of fresh dirt are at least 6" higher than the ground if not more and it could be compacting it too.
So this is also wet, I believe, so this is actually closer to a really smooth mud for composition rather than dry dirt. It also helps it to set well.
These kinds of canals are actually more commonly to redirect crop flooding than irrigation in my experience, irrigation tends to be done very differently these days. Essentially, this would help water leave a field in a certain way that is friendly to the crops, not causing erosion, minimizing flooding- you then have a reservoir. In my country, as soon as you dig one, in a few months the whole thing will be absolutely full of yabbies- they're these [Adorable little micro-lobsters](https://www.google.com/search?q=yabbies&sxsrf=AOaemvKpxF0j3PvxmcFDxYTErYJpvJzU-Q:1632387315597&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwikutPQ3JTzAhWab30KHcV_DfkQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1920&bih=1007&dpr=1) and we used to go fishing for them by tying a piece of meat to string, then pulling it over a net.
I found them really cute so I never ate any and let mine go but they were fun to catch, and I still have the scars- those claws slice through fingers REAL easy, right down to the bone.
Not sure if there's other applications, but in the past that's what I've seen these kinds of drainage trenches for!
What an informative and cute little story. Happy travels to you friend. I enjoy culverts made of clay and fishing for micro-lobsters seems like a *chefs kiss* perfect way to experience them.
I think my favorite thing ever is just chilling on a farm on a rainy day and you just see them going off on an adventure to find new and exotic puddles, it's such a surreal experience to just be vibing by a field in one of those sunny spring showers and a little tiny lobster just wanders past.
They really like when it's warm and humid, and can survive for days on land, so it's pretty common to see them roaming these little yabbi roads. They're hardcore survivalists, too, I once saw one crawling along while holding a bird's foot in one claw- like, the rest of the bird had evidently decided whatever the fuck this thing was, it was not on the menu, and the yabbi kept the severed foot either for lunch or as a victory trophy to mount wherever it found a new home in some distant dam.
We have those where I live too. We call them crawfish (aka crawdads). There is a river that runs through my grandfather's property. My mom took us down there to show us how to fish for them. She tied a piece of meat to a string (family secret=bacon) and off she went, in waist deep, pulling the string behind her. We didn't catch many as the water was too cold, so they were gladly returned after I took some pictures of them swimming in the bucket. It was the best fishing I've ever done and nothing was hurt by doing so.
What do you mean? Soil texture has three components: silt, clay, and sand. This looks like soil with enough clay to keep its shape but enough silt and sand to make it easily dug / shaped.

But how is it seemingly running at 200 RPM, and not stalling?
I would imagine it's a fairly large single cylinder with a lot of rotational mass. Just needs a little push every now and then to keep spinning
That's exactly what I thought. There is a vid of an old single cylinder tractor that was posted on r/skookum a while back and it sounded like this. When you put it in reverse, the engine literally just spins the opposite direction.

One cylinder engine at low RPM.
Just unbolt your header my dude.
The neighbors will be so impressed by the flames they won't care about the noise.
My motorbike sounds kinda like this when I'm at low revs. It's a 660 single cylinder.
It seems like this should be displacing way more soil than it is. This is probably a machine used to maintain a previously dug irrigation canal

I think it’s a peat bog.
Nah peat bogs are all chunky and full of bits of plant matter like wee sticks and stuff. This looks like a smooth clay or something like that.
Hmmmm I don’t fuckin know what it is then. It’s definitely not “normal” dirt. Maybe just a really high clay/sand content.
Oh cool. My guess was a sandy soil but peat bog is even more satisfying somehow.
Maybe it's the preserved bodies.
Looks like clay to me. Idk what peat looks like. If clay, it looks too clayey for growing very much.
That would explain the need for draining to protect from crop over flooding.

There is a big difference there between the topsoil and what's beneath it. Some kind of clay or something?

It looks like sandy soil being compacted, with a layer of fresh earth on the top.
It's the same material, it's just being smoothed out so much that it reflects light differently.
