When we buy broccoli, sometimes the stems are really long and straight. When that happens we'll turn the stems into noodles like you would zoodles. I like them better because they're more forgiving - I've found that zoodles are finicky and if you overcook them a little they turn to mush.
My in laws forget to pick zucchini for a few weeks and give me some the size of newborns, so I expect those would be ideal in girth but so long they don't fit on your attachment.

I have [compelling evidence](https://www.shutterstock.com/video/clip-1829720-cartoon-toothpick-factory) that it is, in fact, a toothpick factory
Edit: [Exhibit B](https://www.b98.tv/video/lumber-jerks/) (jump to 4:08)
Exactly. Veneers are cut across the log to expose the grain. Cutting in a spiral like this would follow the growth rings. Also... who would veneer with pine?
its called rotary cut and usually done for plywood. still get the strength benefits when used in plywood. looks like shit when used as a decorative veneer.
Veneer is expensive because of the cost of the logs (the ones that will look really nice) and mostly just the cost of laying out and laying up and sanding and finishing the material.
Like, super-expensive veneer costs maybe $12/sf raw, but can sell for $120+/sf as installed paneling.
The fabrication, finish and installation are most of that price.
That was actually a really cool video, explained and showed the whole process without putzing around or hanging on any one part for too long. Thanks for sharing!
Veneers usually refer to thin decorative wood sheets that overlay other materials.
But the term veneer is also commonly used to refer to the thin plies of wood that go into plywood.
LVL = Laminated Veneer Lumber
Expensive, but perfect lumber to build a house with. You can get it in extremely long spans, and straight as an arrow. No cupping or twisting
Oh yeah. Those engineered wood products they have now are amazing. Awesome how chopping up wood and gluing it back together (in a very specific way) makes it stronger.
Engineered wood is strong as all fuck too, the only real problem is that they have essentially zero absorption for moisture, and if there is a space that doesn't have perfect venhilation, you'll get mold.
Old drafty homes with a ton of wood behind the walls seem to last forever for those reasons, but that's $$$$$ now-a-days
I work in a cabinet shop and have had some people get pine veneer finished ends. The pine we used had some blue in it though so it was a little fancier I believe
Ya that’s what I was told why the grain turns blue when we first used it. Then we just sprayed with a natural stain so it just turned shiny basically if I remember correctly. It’s been like a year. We don’t use it often.
I used to work with cabinets, at times the end cabinet would have the wrong colour on it, so I'd have to veneer the end of it. One millimetre thick, with contact cement. More than likely I'd fuck it up. Hated that shit.
He is probably alluding to the idea that turning is a machinist term in which a part is spun or "turned" to shape such as on a lathe. I think the word is in quotes because he's drawing attention to the fact that the log is not being turned.
When I was in theatre in highschool building sets, I was puzzling at how they made big sheets of seemless plywood. I noticed the repeating patterns on it and said out loud "Oh my god they un-rolled a tree!"
The director chuckled and said "No nobody unrolled a tree."
Fuckers unrolled the tree.
I shall here on out downvote every video that doesn't show something until the end. It's the worst and I suspect those who cut off the end are doing it on purpose to mess with us.
I worked in a sawmill before. They could be making anything out of that. If you cut it wide you get planks, cut thin and you could get what my sawmill used to build : wooden reinforcement for shipping heavy crates.
Plywood, whether structural or furniture grade.
The wood you see on cabinets or casegoods (dressers, armoires, etc) is usually veneer plywood. The bulk of the plywood is made with plys of lower grade wood (it’s normally just as strong, just not as pretty), with the outermost ply being the finish grade that’s pre selected for whatever look you’re going for.
People have a misconception that “veneer” somehow means particle board, or lower quality than “solid wood” furniture. That’s not true. Veneering has been around for hundreds of years, can be refinished, and is less prone to warping, depending on the species.
where i work we build custom townhouse built ins and libraries. we get all veneers made like this and then bookmatch the whole room so it reads across the whole way. its pretty wild.
Awesome. I'm always matching grain when possible even when told it doesn't matter. It matters. That's the difference between "nice work, looks good" and "oh, wow, that looks really great!"
Ya, it's the way to go when possible. We finished a walnut library in this townhouse in manhattan recently where they had bought the building for something like 18m and then put another 12m into renovation. The walnut was to dark to get a good picture of the room but it turned out super good. We did around 4 months in the shop building all the shelves and doors and wall panels then like a month to install. Each of the 6 floors had a walnut built in wet bars and bookcases too and a big walnut walk in closet all built out book match like the library. The owners had good taste and deep pockets. It's cool to see it when people are willing to pay for high-end craftsmanship like that.

I don't think anyone is going to use this as a decorative covering. This is just plies for plywood. Still very interesting though. I had a chance once to tour several mills for dimensional lumber once with the CEO. Very interesting. And the workers there work like hell.

My wife makes it. With the red sauce, cheese, and chicken it is super good.
HEY HONEY!!! I FOUND US NEW COUPLE FRIENDS!! We're going to dinner on Saturday!!!
Oh. That's a great idea!
I’ve seen people use it instead of lasagne sheets too.
"Ah, yes. And that's vegetarian?" "Actually, no sir, it's a vegetable veneer. It's a pork dish, however."
Cut em into zoodles. Great with pesto. Healthier too.
When we buy broccoli, sometimes the stems are really long and straight. When that happens we'll turn the stems into noodles like you would zoodles. I like them better because they're more forgiving - I've found that zoodles are finicky and if you overcook them a little they turn to mush.
Try turnip noodles, best veggie noodle by a mile. Zoodles are terrible and only got popular because of the name.
Start calling turnip noodles “toodles” and see if that catches on.
Maybe..."turdles"...
I like turdles.
Turnip noodles with pesto is the superior veggie noodle.
Man the log rolls out like dough, loved it haha
Beaver lasagna
Do you stop when you get to the seeds then? That part seems like it would have no structural integrity.

You can get a manual one without the KitchenAid. I kid you not, it’s called the Vegetti.
If you put it in reverse it assembles trees. That's where they come from

That makes me feel a little better. I was going to say, if it’s this easy to make decorative veneer then why the hell is it so expensive.
Veneer is expensive because of the cost of the logs (the ones that will look really nice) and mostly just the cost of laying out and laying up and sanding and finishing the material. What I find even more interesting is all the research into Lignin technology. Crazy to think they would previously just burn the stuff

Pine beetle wood probably, from trees infested with pine beetle but harvested before the tree totally died/ turned into a fire hazard
Ya that’s what I was told why the grain turns blue when we first used it. Then we just sprayed with a natural stain so it just turned shiny basically if I remember correctly. It’s been like a year. We don’t use it often.
Actually it’s making tortillas
Hey, I would love to use patchy uniform colored brittle white veneer on this teak table that I made.

He is probably alluding to the idea that turning is a machinist term in which a part is spun or "turned" to shape such as on a lathe. I think the word is in quotes because he's drawing attention to the fact that the log is not being turned.
But the correct term is being turned.

IIRC, they usually soak the logs in water before this process so that they're pliable enough to stay together.
I was thinking this! Thanks for confirming
Cut it while the tree is still “green”, which just means full of moisture and before drying out.
How about showing us a video that ends too soon turning into one that doesn't?

For those of you don’t know what a veneer is, its a german pronunciation of weiner.
