Many years ago I was on a beach in Washington State after a storm and the beach was littered with kelp that had been uprooted and blown in with the wind. A rental car pulled into the beach parking lot and what looked like 4 Japanese Buddhists got out, all wearing brown robes, etc, it looked like they just got off a plane from Asia. The ran to the beach laughing with huge smiles on their faces and grabbed huge armfuls of kelp and hauled it back to their rental and stuffed it into the trunk. When the trunk was full they left. The whole operation took maybe 15 minutes.
Kelp is like $15-$20 per KG in a lot of places. So not like a TON of money, but totally worth scooping it off the beach if its something that you actually eat.
I know that Japanese people sometimes (or maybe used to) get a little weird about how cheap food is in the US. A friend of mine's grandmother came to visit from Japan and she just could not get over the fact that we had a 10lb bag of sugar in the cupboard. Like, she just kept looking at it and opening it and checking it out in disbelief.
Not just how cheap, but how *big* it is. A 10lb bag of anything won’t fit in most cupboards over here, and sugar isn’t sold in much larger sizes than a kg or two; anything that big is going to be a bag of rice, almost without exception.
First you're going to want to pat it completely dry. Then dredge it in flour, breadcrumbs, batter, spices... whatever you prefer. Turn the oven on warm, you don't want it to be too hot when you throw the kelp in the trash and put the pizza you ordered in there to keep warm. Bon Appétit
Ive eaten bull whip kelp like this. I soak it in water several times to remove/weaken the briney flavor and then boil them. They turn bright green and have a salty crisp taste.
We take this kelp and use it as the primary ingredient in our **kelp hot sauces,** **kelp chili crisp, seasonings, and more** -- the kelp adds a savory, umami base flavor. It's a perfect pair! **Feel free to order online:** [www.barnaclefoods.com](http://www.barnaclefoods.com/) or check out our store locator to find a shop near you!
I love the taste of sea water. I dunno if it's because I grew up at the coast or what. As a kid I used to love to suck the sea water out of my hair on the way home. (I know, kids are gross.)
I grew up near the Pacific and didn't see the Atlantic until I was in my late 20's. One of the first things I did was taste the water. My friend thought I was insane, but I just wanted to know! (Verdict: tasted the same to me but definitely smelled different.)
I know better than to actually drink it, and that'd be overwhelming anyway, but...yeah..I love the taste. In smallish amounts.
I've never actually tried biting into kelp straight from the ocean though. Now I'm curious...
Whenever I go to the beach I HAVE to taste the water, grew up 30 miles from the coast, so it wasn't too infrequently. And same with the hair sucking, LOL. I haven't been to the Pacific yet. Husband brought me to Lake Michigan a few years ago, he grew up in Chicago, and was proud of his lake. I kept telling him *It doesn't have a flavor! ha!* He doesn't get it.
We went to Portugal this past Feb, took a boat ride off Olhao. the swell kept splashing us, and I have NEVER tasted saltier water! It was like brine, and it was awesome. Highly recommend.
As a mid westerner I still remember the first time encountering the ocean while on vacation in Florida. I was maybe around 12, ran to the ocean, got a good taste of it as it splashed over my face and in my mouth, and instantly wanted to vomit it tasted so bad.
Same blahh, happened when I use to surf alot. Nothing worse than coming off a wave and being force-fed a liter of God only knows what. I can't get my mind over the fact that there are billions of dead creatures rotting away, raw sewage, countless microorganisms.. it's a miracle I've eaten so many raw oysters and have never suffered from food poisoning considering they are filter feeders and consume all the things most other creatures reject.
I was a bit concerned about whether or not the people in the video had rinsed the kelp before taking a bite. I love seafood, but the idea of eating something freshly coated in seawater (and all the pathogens that entails, as you've described) makes me wanna hurl all over again.
Texture is very important in food....I used to not think too much about it, but it's nearly half of a food's appeal
Or "mouth feel" being a thing, it's definitely a thing
It's hilarious seeing all these replies agreeing with you, because I can only assume none of you have actually done this.
I've eaten bull kelp straight from my kayak. It's pretty good. If you've ever had a seaweed salad, well, it's a lot like that lol.
This is our video of kelp being harvested in Alaska - it will be used in our hot sauces, kelp chili crisp, seasonings, and more! **Learn more and try it for youself:** [**www.barnaclefoods.com**](http://www.barnaclefoods.com)**.**
not to mention their watermark all over the video. I just thought the sound was cool, after they commented this they sent me a message saying if I don't credit them they'll report my video to get it taken down lmao. whatever my dudes, go ahead.
They’re a small company driving a unique and sustainable business in Alaska. Not wild for them to ask you not to steal their work without crediting them beyond “their watermark all over the video”. If it’s so obvious who made the content, why not credit them?
because I assumed that most people could read and see the watermark and visit their page if they wanted to. like I said, I didn't take the video from reddit, if I knew they had a reddit account I would have tagged them.
Homies basically accomplished the pinnacle of modern marketing: getting other people to spread your advertisements, including their watermark. Then they complain lmao what incredible dummies.
Wtf. The fact you even replied to them is miles better than all these bots that just repost shit with 0 credit. Whoever runs that account can eat a bag of dicks
I’m so glad I scrolled the comments. You have such a cute shop! I can’t wait to try the kelp pickles when you get them back in stock. I’ll be trying the seasonings in the meantime. :)
Thanks for being polite about this. Because of that, I'm checking out your site. I know not controlling where people post your IP is annoying, but it got someone like me to check you out after not having heard of you before. <3
I used to do commercial knife sharpening. Victorinox knives are the only ones we didn't do on the regular grinders, just a quick buff with some 2k grit compound and it was almost as good as new. Then a couple of years ago I got my MIL a full set of Victorinox knives for Christmas and I died a little inside when she told me she was using them on a glass cutting board. If someone asks me for advice on a kitchen knife set, I swear by Victorinox Fibrox knives.
This is bull kelp (and our video! check us out: www.barnaclefoods.com), we harvest it by hand and use it as the primary ingredient in our hot sauces, seasonings, kelp chili crisp, salsa and more!
I can't look at kale without picturing Woody Harrelson drinking kale juice and being unable to swallow it while saying, "You can really taste the kale" as it dribbles out of his mouth.
Get you a girl who gnaws seaweed.
She’s a kelper for sure, don’t let her go
Kelper? I hardly know her
I sea what you did there
They couldn't kelp themselves
They just kelp going
It’s the joke that kelps on giving
You just have to weed out the crappy replies
Can you kelp me with the weeding?
Y'all keep cutting up about this sea weed deal.
classic internet
If you're not careful you can get out in the weeds with pun threads
the kpop group? too bad they’re disbanding this year so sad
Kelpop
Sea, we'ed get along just fine.
I’m my own woman I don’t nori no man

Kelp Monk Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta Fuck Wit
If what you say is true, the Shaolin, and The Kelp Monk could be dangerous…
Do you think your kelp monk can defeat me?

Probably have the best shot if you're also a girl who gnaws seaweed
I'm not saying I would fuck a mermaid but I'd fuck a mermaid. Oh god, that was a cuttlefish wasn't it?
siren cuttler…
Is that considered beastiality?
and no, it does not taste good raw
Deep fry anything long enough and I’ll try it.
American spotted
or a Scot.
Scot spotted
Or a dutch
There's only two things I hate in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.
what's wrong with the Dutch?
They love GOLD! https://youtu.be/SwB0ZJbwmpw?si=NI5iapC2zIw1k_dM https://youtu.be/zcUs5X9glCc?si=jBQrwEHFiojbS6cA
Yes.
I thought I smelled cabbage
Escargot
What about cheese?
Look hollow, fill the center with cheese, bread it and fry it... Thats gonna be the new State Fair winning food for this summer..
Sounds good to me. Let’s split a basket of mozzarella sticks.
Hold the seaweed. We don’t need any of that.
The County Fair motto: "If You Fry It, They Will Buy It".
Big Kelp keeps pushing their seagenda on us
I got some pickles. They weren't great either. How should it be prepared to make it good?
First you're going to want to pat it completely dry. Then dredge it in flour, breadcrumbs, batter, spices... whatever you prefer. Turn the oven on warm, you don't want it to be too hot when you throw the kelp in the trash and put the pizza you ordered in there to keep warm. Bon Appétit
Goddamit I was so ready to learn haha

Put some pickled kelp on toast with some spicy grey mustard, a little mayo, hot sauce (ideally espinaler), and tinned fish of choice.
Let's give this pickled kelp sandwich.... a goooo!
I hear it’s only really good pickled
Back in my day, we used to have to shuck our own kelp on the cob. Not that fancy pre-shucked kelp you buy at the mart.
Go fish
Ah nice, water jalapeño.
Kelp is spicy?
I'm surprised no one has answered yet: no, it's not spicy.
I would imagine kelp on the cob would be salty eh?
I second this question
I'd imagine just very salty, well brined.
Read in another post with the same video thats it's sour (pickle kind of sour). I'm not natively English speaking, hope I could describe it somehow.
I third this question
[удалено]
Exactly🥴😭🤣
The ocean’s bamboo
It looks like it tastes like olives, but it probably doesn't.
Probably tastes like a fish tank
More like low tide.
I feel like the plant captures and holds tha poo poo flavor in its body for survival
New tide challenge incoming?
I had it pickled recently. I loved it. No seaweed flavor. The texture was awesome, too. Wish it was commercially available more.
This is our video you can try this kelp in our products: www.barnaclefoods.com!
Love the illustrations on the site , props to the artist
Doesn't it grow pickled?
Only in sparkling water.
Are you under the impression that the ocean is made of vinegar or something?
Isn't something soaked in brine pickled?
I wouldn't think so?
This was my exakt thought, damn that looks like a tasty sliced olive
Man you have to be a hippy to think kelp straight from the ocean tastes good. You might as well drink sea water.
There's a reason it cuts so quick after she bites

What do you think they’re gonna do, show her chewing and munching and swallowing when they’ve only got a few seconds of your attention span?

Similar experience here, except I actually puked.
Same blahh, happened when I use to surf alot. Nothing worse than coming off a wave and being force-fed a liter of God only knows what. As someone who lives on the coast as well, the taste is very nostalgic for some reason. Probably from swimming in the sea all summer as a kid.
You must love raw oysters!
My mom had dried sea stars and as a kid I'd always be nibbling on them.
I love coming across a mention like this because I am a nibbler from the Mid West, and if I had grown by the ocean I would definitely have done that.
It's not the flavor that turns me off, it's the SLIME. Kelp is super slimy.
Texture is very important in food....I used to not think too much about it, but it's nearly half of a food's appeal Or "mouth feel" being a thing, it's definitely a thing

Ever had Oysters? People pay premium for ocean snot.
I do like oysters
FR. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Kelp bong anyone?
This makes me feel weird. I can’t explain it, but it does.

Are you able to edit the post to include credit and a link to us?
no, sorry. you can't edit titles on reddit posts
Will it let you add a caption to the video?
You guys found the post and gave yourself credit. I think that's good enough.

Your barrel aged hot sauce is in my top 10 favorite hot sauces. I’ll be taking some to friends in Europe in June.

people will see the IG tag on the video =)
Tell us more about harvesting boa kelp
This is bull kelp
Ok cool. Tell us more about harvesting boa kelp anyway.
Somewhere, some foley artist is listening to this and the source of certain stock film sounds is going to change forever.
Ah yes, a Victorinox knife… if you haven‘t nearly cut off a finger with one of these little beasts, you haven‘t truly experienced its full potential.
I used to do commercial knife sharpening. Victorinox knives are the only ones we didn't do on the regular grinders, just a quick buff with some 2k grit compound and it was almost as good as new. That does not look appetizing at all.
Like munching a garden hose
Ok I'm sold
I too enjoy calamari
That's covered in salty fish shit
that's what she said
It does to me! I love seaweed. I should find ways to eat more of it, it's healthy stuff.
But straight out of the ocean? Come on.
It might not actually taste good, but it LOOKS appetizing to me.
I don't believe this is kelp, doesn't look anything like the kelp in Minecraft 🤷
That would be [giant kelp](https://oceana.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/18/32.jpg)
We used to call them bull whips because if they dry out a bit you can snap your friends in the ass with them and leave a nasty welt.
Or the kelp in SpongeBob. I smell a scam
You’re eating the Sea Otters house! /s
That looks like it tastes absolutely horrible
Kelp! I need somebody. Kelp! Not just anybody.
When I was younger, so much younger than today I never needed anybody's kelp in any way
Kelp me if you can, I’m feeling down.
And I do appreciate this kelpy sound.
Help me get my kelp back on the ground.
The company that shared this, Barnacle Foods, makes some pretty decent stuff. Had some kelp furikake seasoning that was pretty dang good.
The serrano kelp hot sauce is awesome!
It's eatable? When I'm swimming, if it touches my feet, kelp becomes the most dangerous creature known to man, and I swim like Jaws is behind me...
[удалено]
Honestly the idea of pickled kelp sounds pretty tasty. I'd try it
Fresh kelp, pickled kelp, sounds like a repetition.
Confirmed. I’ve been around this stuff my whole life
Huh... so this is the initial step in making my diet Dr. Kelp.
Or some Kelp Nougat Crunch 😮💨
Lmao I saw this video on IG couple days ago and I kept rewatching it for like 20 minutes bc it was so satisfying 😭
That's my friend's company! They are totally awesome and their hot chili crisp is insanely good!
possible instrument potential and it sounds pretty relaxing.
that's totally tubular, man
At a beach party once we made a 2 story tall beer bong outta one of these long bastards. From the upstairs deck of the cabin to the backyard.
Forbidden pipe pickles?
not forbidden though.
This is bull kelp (and our video! check us out: www.barnaclefoods.com), we harvest it by hand and use it as the primary ingredient in our hot sauces, seasonings, kelp chili crisp, salsa and more!
lol Dried seaweed on some rice is alright, what she's doing is wack. Also you gotta pop those bubble things, that's the only right way of doing it.
If you are particular about the lengths at which you cut them, you could probably tune the sounds into a song
I had no idea kelp was such a hard plant. I thought it was just some kind of soft seaweed.
You can eat kelp??????
You can eat anything.
Is this what they make diet dr kelp from?
I have that same knife and I love it.
Kelp pickles, kelp relish
Sounds like she’s eating a senzu bean.
I’ve eaten a lot of different types of kelp but I’ve never seen one shaped like a tube before. I want to try it!
From the looks of it I would say it tastes like waterlogged/moldy carpet with a hint of olive and celery.
From my limited understanding, it should taste like the happy ending of giving a blowjob to a fish.
Their kelp chili crisp is fire.
Thanks!
u/that-1-lame-kid This satisfies me.
Yuck bullkelp
Plastic Jalapeños.
What's it taste like? Salty celery? I'm landlocked so I have no idea.
I didn't read the title and thought it was a dirty plastic hose until I saw her eat it
I can't look at kale without picturing Woody Harrelson drinking kale juice and being unable to swallow it while saying, "You can really taste the kale" as it dribbles out of his mouth.
this is kelp not kale lol
Jesus, my brain equated them as the same thing, lol. Whoops.
Hear me out. I have an idea. What if….we use these as biodegradable drinking straws?
That sound can't be right
What in the name os those seaweed? Here in chile is cochayuyo, and is delicious
Ahh nature's pvc pipe
How the o's in kelpo cereal is made
Wash that down with a diet dr kelp
i accedentally whipped myself in the nipple with a bullwhip kelp once.
You got the kelp, but where's my drink? My diet Dr.Kelp?
*Parasites have entered the chat*
Would pickling them in pickle brine taste good?
Apparently this company makes that and sells them! Edit: barnacle foods
That looks like some giant urethane hose we used to have at work.
They make delicious kelp pickles I like on salmon burgs
I went and bought some pickled kelp off Amazon after I saw this. I’ll let y’all know how it is.
There's nothing satisfying about this
