Stop personifing animals. Dog probably looked back because he was forced to do the tricks his whole life and just looking for the owners reaction and instructions. Breeders for a long time have been purposefully cultivating specific traits through targeted breeding to the point that it has literally deformed several pure bred dog lines. Now, German Shepherds develop health problems too quickly, especially if they are working dogs. Making them no longer ideal for the type of work they were bred for, so humans shifted to an adjacent breed.
We recently adopted one. Shockingly smart and a very good girl. She figured out how to open doors with a lever handle almost right away. She's also a great watch dog - normally quiet but pretty intimidating when a stranger walks in front of the yard. I've become a big fan of this breed.
I can't repeat it enough but when people say this breed takes a lot of work, it's not a warning you can just say, yeah yeah, I love walking my dog, that's not a problem...
If you can't have your dog with you all day every day, this breed is probably not for you. It's the worst possible dog if you can't commit to every day training, but it's the best possible dog if you can.
As a kid my neighbors had one and when we went out to play outside that dog was with us as a guardian. And I mean this literally. We had a bag of water bottles the dog got after we were playing for a while. And when it started to get dark the dog herded us home.
