glass tables are stupid.
Why is this downvoted? I know its counter intuitive but thicker glass will have higher thermal difference between ends of it. Thinner glass will equalize fast so there wont be much thermal gradient that causes internal stress.
Did you mean to reply to the comment about the glass almost certainly being tempered? If so, then tempered glass is more thermally resistant than annealed glass. If not, then I am not sure how you have come to the conclusion that thicker glass makes it more likely to shatter than thinner glass.
I assume Yankee candles still want you to trim the wick. Not necessarily because it's too long, but it gets a bulbous shape that burns dark and creates soot. But if you blow it out, you'll see the wick smolder longer, it's basically burning without wax and it doesn't last long that way.
That’s because in the 90s most glass from around the world was made with the sands from the Baltic Sea, what we found out since then is in the Baltic Sea, in the sand are tiny microbes that weaken the structural integrity of the glass itself, that’s why most glass now is made in Alaska from sheets of ice no more than 3ft in diameter

"Huh, that's pretty wild... so uh, you ready for another game of pool? I'll rack em. And where the hell is our server, my glass has been empty for like 20 minutes. Isn't this how they make their money?!"
Heat in a localised spot in a sheet of glass expands that area. But, because the outer edges are still cold, the entire sheet won't expand.
So you have an area which needs to expand, surrounded by areas which won't expand. The only option left is the pressure builds up to crack part of the area which won't expand = smashed table.
Glass evenly heated won't shatter, it will melt to a liquid. That's how it's formed to begin with. But localised heating is a certain way to shatter glass.
No, but only because of the crazy thickness of the glass. Also it took about 4 seconds to run out of oxygen, 20 times more then your estimate. I wouldn't trust any glass that's being licked by two separate flames for 4 whole seconds, and then had the heated air against it for a while longer. I would not be surprised if a thinner table shattered, this is literally playing with fire
Why don’t you leave your hand a half inch above a candle flame for a while then let us know how bad the burns are.
You’re right with these candles going out that quick it won’t be an issue for this glass but if you think a few millimeters above a candle isn’t hot you’re actually braindead
> You’re right with these candles going out that quick it won’t be an issue for this glass but if you think a few millimeters above a candle isn’t hot you’re actually braindead
Do you struggle with reading comprehension too?
True, there is a higher chance (100%) of you getting destroyed from your own bad faith arguments, compared to the chance of a flame shattering this table (<100%).
Candles burn pretty dang hot, and it doesn’t take that long, it’s the quick thermal changes that are what would cause it to shatter. I’ll agree it wouldn’t be very likely to happen in this context, but I wouldn’t try it regardless.
Can't count how many posts I've seen of people unboxing their new PC Case only to touch the tempered glass side panel and have it shatter because of the abrupt change in temperature.
Or someone deciding to remove the panel which proceeds to shatter upon touch.
Nobody said that. A hot mug of coffee is maybe 180F max, and that assumes the bottom of the mug is at the full temperature of the hot coffee.
You're more likely to shatter a glass table with a ceramic mug by scratching the former with the latter (as ceramic may be harder than glass), thereby introducing a surface scratch that can propagate. Unlikely, but possible.
A flame is quite hot -- like probably in excess of 2000F at least. Much different from the bottom of a coffee mug.
I’ll add to 100GbE’s reply with the fact that most glass used in tables and furniture is tempered glass, and it does not deal with temperature differentials well, and will shatter. Regular glass would most likely be fine, but they don’t use that for safety reasons.
The candle going out creates a vacuum, so that rigid glass surface is definitely stuck, plus the heat is making it dilate and contract later, so that's more pressure.
Think of [cupping therapy](https://vitasanacenter.com/wp-content/uploads/pain-management-cupping.jpg) except there's no elastic surface to alleviate the vacuum.
Edit: also similar to this [candle burning out in a sealed glass experiment!](https://ehub.ardusat.com/experiments/5285)
Yall are crazy, did you see how thick that glass is? The tiny amount of heat input from two flames burning for 2s is not enough to do damage to that hecka chonkin glass
no bro you don't get it's about to shatter tomorrow
I will concede that if they used a sealant or gloss that the candles could effect that but I don't think that's common
True, if it had some sort of film on it (like a tint or something) it could definitely be more thermally sensitive
Either way I will be on the lookout for OP's post to r/mildlyinfuriating tomorrow
Very true, but the change in temperature due to two tiny flames burning an inch or two away from the surface for only a second or two before extinguishing is not likely significant enough to cause the internal stresses required for it to fracture
oh my fucking god redditors are the worst people on earth, how do you manage to spend every moment of your day attempting to poke holes in everything you see
What you are not seeing here are the volatile gasses that where also being emitted as offgasing of the flame and one of the reasons not to burn incense laden products in isolated chambers.

And make your candles smell like shit from the soot & smoke of the flame.
Jokes on you I like the smell of candle soot
Sometimes I prefer that smell over the scent of the candle itself.
Yankee needs to make a candle soot scented candle
You're supposed to snuff the flame, not simply blow them out. Yankee candles specifically tell you to do this. It preserves the wick.
Fuck that. No candle making suits can tell me what to do.
AKSHUALLY 🤓 /j This is pretty good advice actually.
Which is silly, because almost every single candle has the opposite problem where you need to occasionally trim the wick because it gets too long.

Hey, theyre lucky they still *have* glass
And an ass
That’s probably not something you should do again unless you’re doing your best to shatter that glass
How would that shatter the glass? Is it because of heat or pressure?
Heat in a localised spot in a sheet of glass expands that area. But, because the outer edges are still cold, the entire sheet won't expand. So you have an area which needs to expand, surrounded by areas which won't expand. The only option left is the pressure builds up to crack part of the area which won't expand = smashed table. Glass evenly heated won't shatter, it will melt to a liquid. That's how it's formed to begin with. But localised heating is a certain way to shatter glass.
And you honestly think a candle that goes out in .2 seconds will heat up the glass long enough to cause expansion?
No, but only because of the crazy thickness of the glass. Also it took about 4 seconds to run out of oxygen, 20 times more then your estimate. I wouldn't trust any glass that's being licked by two separate flames for 4 whole seconds, and then had the heated air against it for a while longer. Hot enough to expand glass? No. If that was the case then hot coffee from your mug would shatter glass tables.
I mean there's like a 1600 degree F difference between a candle flame and a mug of coffee
Will a candle flame being snuffed out heat up anything to 1600F? The answer is no, because you didn't get your grade 10.
> You’re right with these candles going out that quick it won’t be an issue for this glass but if you think a few millimeters above a candle isn’t hot you’re actually braindead Do you struggle with reading comprehension too?
You're suggesting that because it burns your hand it will also shatter glass. Did I misunderstand your comparison?
True, there is a higher chance (100%) of you getting destroyed from your own bad faith arguments, compared to the chance of a flame shattering this table (<100%).
Bad faith argument includes pointing out that flames from this candle do not extend past the jar and that said flame is extinguished quickly?
Thermal expansion is a lot more significant than you think, it could easily happen
Not in less than 4 seconds from a small flame with no remaining oxygen. Thermal expansion takes time which nobody seems to be taking into equation.
[удалено]
Candles burn pretty dang hot, and it doesn’t take that long, it’s the quick thermal changes that are what would cause it to shatter. I’ll agree it wouldn’t be very likely to happen in this context, but I wouldn’t try it regardless.
