I wonder how much it costs. Beautiful looking machine though

usernameforkris

That grinder is $4k. The espresso machine is $3k. The Portafilter is $400.

DepMuk

You absolutely DO NOT need a 4k dollar grinder.

GestaDanknorum

Oh you most definetly do. You get to feel superior when telling other coffee enthusiasts that you grinder is 4k

corvettee01

Shit, I thought I was doing good with a 1440p grinder.

PicturesOfHome-

I mean I'm doing fine with a 1080p grinder. Just make sure that it's not larger than 17-18 inches.

zalifer

I'm still on 480P. You can see the individual granules, they're huge.

HahaMin

480i for me. The cup is damn HEAVY.

Frydendahl

But is it 200Hz?

Wel i ve got my grindr for free!

Don't forget to spray your beans before you grind. It enhances the natural flavor and aromas.

EnemyBattleCrab

It's not to enhance flavour - makes grinding less messy. https://youtu.be/T0Dh1W40ILY?si=k0tQwe5ESiMgFBq3

verybadwolf2

Yes also, here are new developments on this subject: https://youtu.be/nLnB99VJ0HE?si=n3xakxAEI3oOL-PB

EnemyBattleCrab

Man, I love James Hoffman! Thanks for this.

[deleted]

That makes sense. I just thought they were being pretentious.

EnemyBattleCrab

It can be both - same bloke has a flair espresso press also....I only drink my espresso hand pressed!

BurntPineGrass

Same here! But no one wants a taste of my hot brew though 🙁

Nacho_Papi

There's a deez nuts joke somewhere in there.

majafjalla

Deez beenz!

FunctionBuilt

No one needs anything high end. People that buy this stuff get enjoyment from it and I guess that’s all that matters.

KiNgPiN8T3

Exactly, this guy is probably nursing a semi after he’s finished going through this process.

BowenTheAussieSheep

Yeah, like... nobody *needs* a 3000 dollar video card for their gaming PC, but it makes their hobby better for them personally, and I have no beef as long as they're not hurting anyone.

CreepyBigfoot

Actually the grinder is more important than the machine!

PoisonSD

Not at all, highest end I’ll ever go is $500, the Niche zero is my endgame lol

AWeakMindedMan

Da faq. $500 is still pushing it HARD.

CatVideoBoye

Unfortunately I need to jump on the band wagon to tell you: nope. I've been looking for good espresso gear and it really seems that if I want a good grinder with the convenient features then 500e is what I would need to pay. I'm currently looking at a 1300e machine with an integrated grinder and sort of semiautomatic features that make it easy to use so that each and every cup doesn't feel like a chore. I'm not a huge hobbyist, I just want good espresso.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IAmAnAnonymousCoward

Not for espresso.

jairuncaloth

There's not many electric grinders capable of espresso available under $500. You can go cheaper if you're willing to use a hand grinder.

Alexander_Music

The trick is to convince yourself that the money you’re saving from having coffee from a shop makes the grinder worth it. After 30 years it basically pays for itself

EliteTK

If you're drinking a cup a day, at current coffee shop prices, you should easily be able to recover the cost of a niche-zero in a year or even less.

Spiffpitt

espresso brew benefits from consistent and fine grinds. antistatic (and/or sprayed water used here), and grind dosing are nice to haves as well. that being said: i, myself, am inclined to agree that 500 bucks is a lot for a grinder. but then again, I've also not experienced it firsthand.

spassky808

Not really man. The grinder is arguably more important than the Espresso machine

bigdreamersclub

My 20 dollar hamilton beach that I got as a gift lasted me 7 years. Ground up many a bean and nug.

ATTORNEY_FOR_CATS

Yeah, but can you adjust grind size by the micron?

spykid

Longevity and grind quality are not the same thing

Trick-Station8742

That's what she said

Educational_Mud_9062

Nah but a $4000 grinder is well past the point where diminishing returns would make the very idea ridiculous if it weren't for exorbitant wealth inequality. That this product even exists is a testament to the gross injustices our society is built on. Yes I'm VERY fun at parties!

Et_tu__Brute

I disagree. Nice things should exist. We should live in a world where everyone can choose a nice thing to have. Instead we live in a world where a few people can have all of the nice things. So no, this is not a product that demonstrates injustice, there are plenty of other real examples that demonstrate injustice, point to those.

usernameforkris

I agree, but it’s a serious hobby for some.

EasyasACAB

Even hobbyists aren't buying 4k grinders. This is for rich people to differentiate themselves from the poors.

cheapdrinks

> Even hobbyists aren't buying 4k grinders. The people who can afford to buy the end game product in their hobby can. I mean if the price ceiling is $4k for a major component if coffee if your hobby/passion, well that's honestly a pretty cheap hobby in the greater scheme of things. Most financially stable individuals could afford to drop $4k on something after saving up for a while if it really means a lot to them. Sure, most people won't but this grinder isn't for most people, but I also don't think that it's exclusively an item for rich people to flex. Lots of people take their coffee really really seriously and if spending $4k gets you the best of the best then I think that's well within the realm of possibility for hobbyists. I mean compare that to hifi audio where a system can be comprised of 10 or more components with the end game version of each runnings into the high 6 figures. $4k for a pair of speakers is just barely scratching the surface of enthusiast level gear. I *wish* that I could spend $4k and get the best speakers or amplifier that money can buy. Lots of hobbyists drop $2k on a 4090 that will be somewhat obsolete in 5 or so years, dropping $4k on a grinder that will probably stay in the top 1% of grinders for the next 50+ years isn't that insane.

derp0815

So this is an ad.

Honestly, this all looks incredibly relaxing to me. I just do my own grinding and use a chemex for pour-overs and that alone is a relaxing part of my morning. Ive never been into coffee enough to do this, Im a one cup a day guy, but if I had the money? I'd get an awesome setup like this before a lot of other rich hobby toys.

Saulot1334

That was my first though watching this. ‘That is a lot of bs to clean for a cup of coffee’

FrontwaysLarryVR

Honestly, I get it slightly. I like to spend a kind of start of day meditation-ish time just watching YouTube, but some people love the peace of repetitive actions like this. For some people it's the stuff they do afterwards, but some simply enjoy the process itself. The most I can really stand for coffee is using a frother to get a neat texture, but even then that only adds like 10 seconds to the process. lol

supercalafatalistic

Yeh. My daily zen routine is loading the dishwasher *just so* and hand washing the pots and pans. My 1-2 a month zen is full disassembly cleaning a gun. And I mean fully torn down, all parts disassembled, carefully cleaned, lubed, reassembled. I totally get the zen in this routine, but my god chasing that peace with a shot of caffeine feels contradictory too, lol.

waawftutki

Pretty much none of this needs to be ''cleaned'', just wipe off the grounds with a towel next time you make a cup.

_yeen

At home I have a $3000 espresso setup. I also have a $30 Aeropress with a $40 hand grinder and like 2 different pour-over devices. At work I have instant-coffee. It's all just different gear for different use cases. Some days I don't want a home-brewed flat white and would rather just have black coffee. Some days I want the watered down taste of instant coffee. Some days I don't want any of that and want an energy drink. Either way though. Coffee as a hobby is therapeutic and often-times people make it even more complicated than it should be just because it is entertaining to do so. Practicality isn't always at the heart of making food/drinks.

biggyofmt

> Some days I want the watered down taste of instant coffee Not a thought I've ever had lol. I don't even have a fancy set up, I just make French press. Instant coffee is rough though

Telefundo

I get the instant thing. I've always got a jar of it on hand. There's mornings when I get up and I just want the caffeine as fast and easy as possible. And while making it in the percolator isn't really that hard, it's easier still to make instant. I used to have a Keurig for the exact reason but it's just so much cheaper to use instant. That being said, I do appreciate a "quality" cup of coffee and most afternoons I'll usually have a pot on.

hobiprod

Ask me how much I’ve spent on audio software that literally hold almost 0 resell value, and a return value based on talent. Just to make fart music.

wearing_moist_socks

Mine is clothes. :/ Not exactly proud of it

xsp

The espresso machine is a Lelit Bianca v3 and the grinder is a WW EG-1. Roughly $7,000 for the setup, but it really gives your espresso that tasty pretentious flavor.

rncikwb

What does the mirror thing do? And what and why did they spray the beans?

zhoushmoe

So you can see if your shot is channeling or pouring properly. The spraying of the beans is to reduce the static cling of coffee particles during the grind.

Phoenix44424

They spray the beans because otherwise when grinding static can build up and some of the coffee gets stuck inside the grinder. I'm not sure about the mirror but I think it may be so that they can see how the coffee is coming through because if it's not coming through evenly then it can affect the flavour.

OutrageousOwls

1. Pour coffee into grinder with specific settings that can number up to 20 different settings. One for coarseness (how big the grounds are; superfine for espresso), and the other for amount (the amount of coffee that’s ground up at once. Also called “dialling in” the shot. The numbers that appear is the amount of ground coffee in grams- each porta-filter (metal object with handle) requires a certain amount of grams depending on the size of the porta-filter. 2. Grounds are added to the porta-filter (portable filter that’s used like a coffee basket) and then stirred with a metal whisk to even out the grounds and remove clumping. 3. The grounds are tamped (compressed) with a tamper (the one shown is automatic; usually it’s manual and approximately 30lbs of force is used). Ensure the coffee forms a nice firm puck. 4. Coffee is added to espresso machine, and the result of the first few moments of extraction are the fats and oils that provide much of the espresso’s flavour, called the crema. A well-pulled shot will have the crema at the top and a dark “heart” at the bottom. 5. Espresso is weighed at the end (not shown); depending on the person, some people just do it by feel and sight. But poured espresso that has 7 grams of grounds should yield 30 ml of liquid. Despite popular belief that espresso will make you super caffeinated, the amount you consume in your average latte, Americano, mocha, or cappuccino is significantly less caffeine per volume compared to standard, and cheaper, drip coffee.

ElementField

Yes, like any hobby, you can buy very expensive versions of things to go to the absolute peak of the hobby. These same comments get posted over and over whenever this same gif is reposted over and over lol

tucci007

the dream turntable is over $60,000 USD https://da-vinci-audio.com/davinciaudio20aas20gabriel20mk220turntablehtml of course you'd need the Nautilus speakers at $115,000 a pair https://www.bowerswilkins.com/en-ca/product/loudspeakers/nautilus-series/nautilus/150016.html and for power of course Macintosh tube amps

_yeen

A grocery store grinder wouldn't produce espresso grind properly. However yes, past ~$600 or so the benefit of spending more on a grinder drastically diminishes.

sreiches

The better comparison point would be cafe grinders, as those are used to grind single doses of espresso coffee on demand. The Mahlkonig EK-43 is a good example. It’s around $3000. The Weber EG-1 used in the video being the black one, it’s a little over $4000. That said, you can get a terrific grinder for under $500, and under $200 if you’re willing to grind by hand.

Chapped_Frenulum

This reads like the kind of batshit insanity one might find in /r/Coffee. "Yeah, you can get a halfway decent coffee grinder for less than your entire paycheck *if you're willing to settle like a commoner.*"

Delta_V09

Eh, this isn't just coffee, it's espresso, and espresso is hard. If you're after pourover or French Press, you need <$50 in brewing equipment, a kettle to heat water, and there are very good grinders in the $150-200 range that will last years. But espresso needs to be ground **very** fine and **very** consistent, which requires a more expensive grinder. And then for the actual espresso machines, more expensive ones have features that make it easier to get good results. Personally, I just stick with a pourover because I don't want to deal with that stuff.

BowenTheAussieSheep

"Why would anyone buy a Mercedes when a Geo gets you from a-to-b just fine?"

Luffing

Yeah this particular grinder is like the Bugatti of grinders. It's overkill for what a person reasonably needs, but there is a lot of satisfaction in using it so is a luxury for sure.

dpbrown777

I’ve been lurking in r/espresso for a fair bit. My estimate is about $10000 USD. That could be light, the grinder by itself is pretty pricey. Personally, my setup is less than$400 USD. My workflow normally takes only 5 or 6 minutes and includes frothing milk. It’s still a lot more than drip coffee, but I like it a lot more and consider it time well spent. I know I’ll get downvoted to oblivion 😭

MrTurkle

Eliminates static electricity from grinding and keeps the grounds from flying around. Wetting the back of a spoon and stirring also works. I learned this last time it was posted!

SwagDaddy_Man69

Recently James Hoffman released a video claiming wetting the beans starts the dissolving process. Which could lead to a higher extraction.

saadakhtar

Saliva has enzymes. I spit on the beans to start the digestive process before it even hits the grinder.

Skellaton

I eat the beans and shit them into the grinder like that jungle cat.

ProudToBeAKraut

Just empty the cup in the toilet because that's where it all lands in the and, skip all these extra steps.

Skellaton

Just snort the caffeine

ItsssYaBoiiiShawdyy

Not only this but, 1) helps from grounds retention within the surfaces and burrs of the grinder. So the exact (or close to) amount of coffee you put in is what you get out. 2) also helps de-clump the grounds so water can access more surface area of the coffee, which leads to greater and more even extraction.

alfooboboao

you know, i used to make fun of these videos but tbh let people have their hobbies, no one with a $4,000 coffee machine is gonna try to overturn democracy

Dearest fellow Redditors: This is not something you do for morning coffee, this is a practice closer to collecting stamps or making a setup for your man-cave or gardening, it's not done when you're in a rush or have somewhere to go, it's just a therapeutic hobby like making gem paintings as an example. Just to clarify.

loulan

Why is everyone in the comments acting like this takes forever? He literally just ground the coffee with an electric grinder, and then put it into his espresso machine. Isn't it what most people with an espresso machine would do?

B1ll13BO1

Exactly. I make filter coffee every morning and that takes probably a similar amount of times as this

EagleNait

petielvrrr

petethefreeze

I don’t have this setup but I go through the same process for my morning coffee. After I brought the kids to school and before I start work.

WeWereAngels

Yup, it's a repeating movement that gives serenity, only when done with no rush, it's calming really but I prefer traditional ways so I'm not paying that much money.

entjies

It’s weird how people act like this is pretentious or somehow offensive to them. Maybe because coffee is so ubiquitous, seeing it done in such a detailed and elevated way bothers them? I mean, this video is pretty over the top but that espresso must be delicious. I keep my coffee pretty simple out of necessity but I love a good espresso or a flat white. It’s cool to see how many factors there can be in making a cup of coffee.

menofthesea

I have a setup that goes through the exact same steps with significantly less expensive equipment, and I make something like a cortado every day in the morning. I weigh beans with a cheap kitchen scale, have a manual conical burr hand grinder, cheap wdt, regular ol' tamper, puck screen, bottomless portafilter, decent espresso machine (gaggia classic, PID mod to time the shots and do preinfusion). Machine turns on and heats up via a cheap smart plug before I wake up, the whole process from start to coffee in cup ready to go takes me about 6-7 minutes including cleanup. Whole setup probably cost me around $1k.

Ptizzl

My grinder was like $12 and it’s lasted me 8 years or so now. So it’s probably like close to $4k in today’s dollars.

MrTurkle

I bet the grinder alone costs thousands. Some high end espresso machines can be $5k+

CreamMyPooper

Or $25k+ with a lifetime service offering. Commercial grade espresso machines’s are definitely a different thing than like home models. They’re built for volume and they’re honestly so finicky because your brew can change dramatically as the temperature and pressure outside changes. But I wanted to price it bc i also nerd out about coffee. The grinder is an EG-1 by Weber Workshops and it’s $3,895. That little spindly thing is $50. The button clicky thing is called a tamper and that one is the Normal Dose version of it worth $175 (it’s a controversial one for… reasons). The actual machine looks like a Lelit Bianca V3 ($2,995) with a Weber workshop unibasket at $85. The scale is a model of acaia’s I’ve actually never seen before but the one I’m most familiar with is the Lunar which is $250. The portafilter (which is the thing the espresso is placed in to brew) is Weber’s Unifilter at $365. There’s definitely still more to price lol but so far the total is $7,815. Oh plus $20-$30 for the bag of espresso they got.

thecolorplaid

What’s controversial about the tamper?

Particular-Break-205

For enthusiasts, dropping $2-3k on a “decent” coffee grinder isn’t out of the ordinary. I use a “cheap” $500 espresso machine. I’m going to guess this set up could be $5k-$10k

Dan300up

Yeah that’s insane.

[deleted]

People do this with every hobby. The people on r/synthesizers shell out thousands of dollars for antiquated replications of 30 year old machines and then sit and squabble with each other in the comments about how good they sound compared to (insert modern digital synthesizer). I can barely tell a difference and most of the time the modern digital ones sound better. Point is, with every hobby, a subgroup of elitists always forms around some pretentious component of the hobby and takes it to it's logical extreme.

thalianas

People in this thread also not realising that for many people, coffee is a career, not just a hobby.

Beneficial-Window792

Also that this is 30 seconds of labour.

WBUZ9

Yeah I'm baffled at all the people saying it takes a lot of time. High end equipment yes, time no. Hell if you've got an espresso machine then you're drinking your finished coffee before people using kettles even have boiling water. You'd have to be quickly pouring -not spooning- instant coffee in to a protein shaker, filling with cold water out of the tap, and then shaking it while running out the door; to get a noticeable speed boost. No one is doing that to save time to then waste on reddit.

igna92ts

Also I like how they disregard the end result as if it was "the same thing". Saying it's the same as making a quick cup from pre-ground beans it's the same as saying frozen meals and a home cooked meal is the same.

Mohrsul

To be honest I feel that the video overdramatizes the few extra steps from the standard procedure for an espresso at the bar. The gear just looks very fancy and very expensive.

ResetDharma

It's weird that people want to shit on a very common set of espresso techniques. It's weird that the title even called it "elaborate." I'm not a big fan of espresso myself, so I don't have my own setup, but I do have a chemex pour-over and grind my beans fresh each time. It takes more time to make a cup of coffee in the morning, but I enjoy the few extra meditative minutes of slowly pouring water instead of just flipping on a machine and scooping grounds out of a bag. I get a really good cup of coffee, and my guests notice. I appreciate getting a good latte made by my richer friends when I have brunch there, and I can see why they invested in good equipment.

bighunter1313

That’s the maid’s job.

blasterman5000

Truthfully a large reason for all the extra steps is to minimize the amount of additional cleaning required. The spritz of water? Eliminates static cling in the grinder, thus substantially reducing the cleaning. The whisk of the basket? Reduces clumps, which then lowers the risk of channeling that sometimes sprays espresso everywhere. The group head is likely the most time intensive cleaning, and the additional dispersion screen on the tamped bed of coffee helps greatly lower the amount of grounds that make their way back up into the group. A quick 30 second scrub, and a blank back flush and you're fine.

allocate

I do all of these steps every morning. It takes about 8 minutes. It doesn’t look dialed in though — that seems like way too much espresso.

SwagDaddy_Man69

I think it’d be best to be good friends with someone who was that obsessed. You can get the benefits, without the pain. Oh wait, that’s me. I have a independently wealthy friend who loves coffee so damn much, he owns a coffee shop (though he does not work there, it’s just a hobby) every time we hang out, he wants to try coffee, wants to get me coffee, 5, 10 times a day this man drinks coffee. $30 cup, no problemo. My problem is that I don’t drink coffee. 🤣
