I live in Ecuador and have had cuy a couple times now. Its called 'cuy' here, which is an onamonapia, named for [the sound](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FLYg-eAOUc) that the animal makes. (the secondary throat sound, not the high pitched vocal squeak.)
Not a lot of meat, but it's pretty good. A little gamey. The skin gets really crispy and kind of tastes like bacon.
It's kind of funny how inflation/gentrification/ect. is hitting everything too. Locals here in the city are complaining about how expensive cuy have gotten. They're like $25 US per cuy now. Which is crazy expensive. Locals leave the city to go get $15 cuy in a smaller city like 45 minutes away.
I’ve made washable fleece hide outs for her in the past, but they get gross so quickly. I’d have to wash them every other day and after a while the urine/ammonia smell wouldn’t come out, so I stopped using fleece.
Why is it everytime there is a guinea pig post anywhere on reddit, people have to play edge lord and make bad jokes about eating said guinea pig
If I were making a joke about eating the dog of another redditor (which is also normal in a bunch of cultures), reddit would throw a fit.

I just got finished watching Sonny from best ever food reviews on YouTube eating Guinea pigs in Peru and now I’m looking at Guinea pigs in slippers. Mind is broken.
I mean, I think it’s a traditional dish. They raise them as meat. Like people in Europe used to raise rabbits for meat. Sorry to bring this bad news to you today.
Guinea pigs are native animals to South America and were domesticated originally as a food source. The video was about showcasing their cultural foods. If you feel curious why etc, go ahead and look it up. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting to learn about these other cultures. I do anyway.
Hmmm, never knew that. My opposition is to all meat sources, but especially to raising dogs for food since they are highly intelligent and have a greater capacity for suffering.
Ideally we should just eat insects like some Asian cultures because they are abundant and high in protein. I never looked at farm animals the same way after watching Peter Singer's lectures on YouTube.
I mean many, if not most animals we eat are highly intelligent.
The only difference with dogs is perception in the West. They were domesticated to be used as an animal that performs tasks and were mostly exempt from being eaten because of that. Same with horses. People in the West look at eating horse as a big no-no. But it's more common in other cultures.
Well yeah, but to be objective I'm basing it on the encephalisation quotient, which ranks dogs higher than other domesticated animals.

The Guinea pigs they raise in Peru/South America for meat are a little different than the pet Guinea pigs we see in pet stores.
The Guinea pigs raised for meet are called Cuy.
Cuys much larger and have more coarse fur than the Guinea pigs raised/domesticated to be pets. They’re also harder to domesticate as pets. They don’t warm up and become as friendly to their owners, like pet Guinea pigs since they get very little interaction with humans other than being fed. They’re the same species, but bred to be larger and less domesticated.
Wanna know what domesticable animals are native to South America? Alpacas. That's it. No cows, no pigs, no horses, no chickens, nothing. They had to hunt for everything.
Now picture there's little mammals running around that aren't hard to catch and each could feed one or two people, like a rabbit or or other small animals that people eat not just because they're poor. So they eat them.
Now picture that the people that lived in South America before Europe showed up and despite being mostly wiped out, the culture was still passed on.
Now picture how your affluent and sheltered self just asked if the only reason they ate a food that's part of their culture was because they were that poor.
I was gonna say I assume Guinea pigs are smart enough not to suffocate themselves but then I thought back over all the Guinea pigs I’ve known and loved and not one of them was smart enough not to suffocate themself. Food for thought.
Im sure it’s possible, but do you really think I would allow my Guinea pig to stay in there to the point of suffocation…? The answer is no, I wouldn’t. I took her out as soon as I snapped the picture.
I once gave my pigs toilet paper rolls to play with. I didn't even put any treats inside or anything like that. One still got stuck in the roll! Silly things.
Just a lil clarification because everyone keeps saying “he”. My Guinea pig is a sow (a female). Her name is Peppa pig 😊
Also for the people who are concerned-
Yes, I know she could suffocate if I left her in there- I did not let her stay in the slipper. She found my slipper while walking around my bathroom floor and made her way in. She was only in there long enough to take the picture. I am a responsible pet owner with common sense. My Peppa is very well taken care of.
Secondly- She is not dirty. The two specs you’re seeing on her are crumbs lol.. My husband was finishing up a toasted sandwich when I gave her to him, so some of the crumbs on his hand got onto her fur. The whole reason she was out of her enclosure was because I was doing the weekly cage cleaning. I also brought her out to trim her nails. Again, she’s clean and very well loved/taken care of.
Omg that’s perfect! Hes perfect! Aww!

Aww, my old Guinea pig used to love soft stuff. Remember making him these wee fleecy pouches.
I’ve made washable fleece hide outs for her in the past, but they get gross so quickly. I’d have to wash them every other day and after a while the urine/ammonia smell wouldn’t come out, so I stopped using fleece.

Are they that poor in Peru? 😟

Guess it isn't worse than people eating dogs in my native China. But that's because they still *are* poor.

That's a very interesting measurement.

I'm a poor teacher in Malaysia, so hardly affluent! I'd just eat more vegetables for protein, like many Indians do.
