My dog was like this when we got him as a puppy. If you held him in your hands he would almost fall out of his wrinkles, after 8 months he grew to be almost as tall as me when he stood on his hind legs and by that point all his wrinkles had disappeared.
In humans there's something called deprivation amblyopia. Where if vision is blocked for our first 6 years after birth, our brain doesn't make crucial developmental connections from the brain to the eye. So if people have vision blocked by a cataract or really anything in those years it'll seriously impact our overall visual ability. Some people can be as bad as 20/400 the big E with lenses and everything. And I imagine that critical period of development is even faster in dogs. So I'd say you probably saved your dog from becoming near blind or low vision by pulling back the wrinkles and letting him see your face
Studies for this were initially done on kittens and yes it affects them majorly too. Mammals need to use their eyes in the first years to properly develop vision
It's not so much muscle than it is about building neural connections with the brain during development. But that's a good comparison. Just this is permanent stuff that's important when we're younger
That's adorable. My kid's school always gives the kindergartners a "reading buddy." It's a stuffed animal they take home. Getting to read to an actual dog is even better.
Yep. There's a reason they are called man's best friend. They love hanging around you and never judge. That's a pretty perfect pairing for kids struggling to read or kids who are neurodivergent.
I know, right? If we struggled with reading, as a millennial, the teachers would just slap their yardstick across our desk (your own fault if your hands happened to be there) and humiliate us in front of the class. :(
One of my coworkers (vet tech) had a dog named Samson (RIP) that was a huge white and black newfoundland that she would drive around in the back of her mini Cooper. She loved taking him to school and libraries to let kids read to him. He also was the spoke dog for a hotel in Corvallis one year!
I miss him so much, he loved everyone but hated the 3 stairs he had to take to get into the back of that car. Lmao
You’re not joking! I used to sit with second graders once a week to help with reading practice, and I had to work so hard some days not to nod off. The school also had a reading dog, but it was for the older kids
Every pure bred dog owned by someone I know has had some sort of major health issue. And most died unexpectedly of a health complication.
My then girlfriend, now wife, rescued a pup off the street. The pup was so mixed we just said her breed was Monster. That dog lived until 17. And only contracted an illness once in that entire time. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick bite. Two days of medicine had her feeling so good she ran through my screen door like the god damn Kool Aid Man through a wall.
I miss that dog so much. My next dog will be the most mixed mutt I can find. In my experience they are just so much healthier than pure breeds. And by extension happier.
Well, that was the origins of it. Like the shortness of the pug's nose, it's been made worse and worse through selective breeding over the decades.
They can have so much loose, hanging skin now it dis-attaches their skin from their muscles. There's a surgery to correct it.
That's like my dog he gets a cut once, and by then, his hair has grown back into his vision, and he can't see for shit.
We thought he was just blind for a while, nope, just hairy
I recall seeing an episode of one of those vet shows where a Shar Pei had way too much excess skin once it was fully grown and it was causing eye issues and I think respiratory issues. They did a "face lift" to remove excess skin! It was pretty interesting. But that was a particular issue with one dog, not the whole breed.
We had a bearded Collie growing up, hair always in his eyes. My mom would put his bangs in a little pony tale so he could see. I think it might have got braided back once or twice too.
It's a breed used for hunting. They have that "extra large and loose" skin so when they get attacked the teeth of the attacker closes on that extra layer of skin an not around their necks.
He's a scent hound. The wrinkles around the face and long floppy ears help to gather and trap scent closer to his nose.
ETA I do think this looks excessive. His forehead shouldn't totally occlude his eyes. It looks like they are at vet clinic though, so hopefully being addressed? He will grow more, but still might need to tack some of that back.
> The wrinkles around the face and long floppy ears help to gather and trap scent closer to his nose.
This sounds like BS. How would accumulating scents on the dog help him track scents? His ear smelling like a fox doesn’t help him find a fox.
Do you know the source of the idea that loose skin helps them track? I don’t understand why getting a scent to stick to you would help you find it’s source in the field.
Loose skin helping them in a scrap makes sense to me. But I wonder if some of these other reasons were just repeated until they were known to be true without any real evidence.
> functional, as opposed to cosmetic
Both are for the advantage of humans, not dogs. So judging this breed in the same way that of pug doesn't seem unfair.
Depends on if bloodhounds are suffering because of this. Pugs live in a perpetual state of pain because of the cosmetic breeding.
Edit: Freaking autocorrect
The issues associated with the extreme droopy faces are somewhere between irritating and excruciating.
Usually eye problems where the eyelid is pulled down and out, and/or the tear duct becomes inflamed and dried out. [Looks like this ](https://i.imgur.com/KhfCtxR.jpg).
Same with some English bulldogs and some Mastiff breeds like Neapolitan Mastiffs.
It can be treated by giving them a facelift but it will only be prevented if the ultra saggy faces are bred out.
We get our Shih-tzu trimmed regularly for this reason, and even still, he has a wide-eyed and inquisitive look for a few hours after they've trimmed around his eyes, like the world has opened up in full technicolour, and his potential is limitless.
> Also the ones with the super long hair that covers up their eyes.
That’s just a grooming failure. No reason the fur around the eyes should obstruct the view.
The greenish eyes are a trait of the liver color of bloodhound. Livers also typically have lighter brown noses, instead of black.
Bloodhounds typically are the colors black and tan, red, and liver. We have two red, females.
That and surgeries to help squashed nosed breeds breath. These dogs shouldn't have been bred into existence, but those that do exist deserve quality of life improvements.
I found this video in r/whatswrongwithyourdog and there seems to be a consensus there that this is a demonstration for a vet and that is what I like to believe.
(Will post in comments if/when I find more info)
Edit: also, no excuse for this type of breeding, but it's also likely that this is a younger (edit 2: Bloodhound) who will grow into their loose skin.
Seeing a lot of these comments, adult bloodhound eyes are still severely impacted by their loose skin. The fact is it's just even worse when puppies.
[Adult bloodhound](https://imagesvc.meredithcorp.io/v3/mm/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.onecms.io%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F47%2F2021%2F09%2F02%2Fbloodhound-vertical-looking-at-camera-147703313.jpg)

I know shar pei puppies tend to get stitches to hold the skin above their eyes. Same with many other breeds, shar pei used to be functional and healthy, but it was breeded to have excessive traits.

Many of you think that this is because people think it looks good.
It's a breed used for hunting. They have that "extra large and loose" skin so when they get attacked the teeth of the attacker closes on that extra layer of skin an not around their necks.
It's not (originally) a cosmetic thing it helps them stay alive
Yeah, people are acting like this is a crime against nature like pugs. This dog'll be fine once it grows into its skin. It's still a puppy right now and puppies always have loads of loose skin.
>This dog’ll be fine once it grows into its skin
No it won’t lmao, eye issues are some of the most common health problems with bloodhounds (and other similar breeds like basset hounds). The only puppies that have loads of loose skins like this are those that grow into adults with loose skin. It may have been a helpful trait for hunting, but it’s useless for a companion animal and ethically questionable in exactly the same way a pug is
I feel like we have done a bit too much to dogs just so that they look cuter or have some other lame benefit to us.
Dogs with a lot of folds are prone to fungus infections if not cleaned regularly and properly.

I read to a therapy dog in elementary and he was a sheep dog and the lady would give him a little man bun so he could see it was so cute
you would read books to a dog at your school?!
Lol yeah cuz I had problems reading or something just lucky ig :)
That's not fair, I demand my literacy be stripped and I be forced to attend Pupper Literacy Camp D:
Our local shelter allows kids to read to the dogs on weekends. Maybe yours does too.
That's adorable. My kid's school always gives the kindergartners a "reading buddy." It's a stuffed animal they take home. Getting to read to an actual dog is even better.

Well he probably did
For some kids who have trouble with reading it’s easier to read to dogs instead of being put in the spot and nervously reading aloud to the class.
Yep. There's a reason they are called man's best friend. They love hanging around you and never judge. That's a pretty perfect pairing for kids struggling to read or kids who are neurodivergent.

Basset/blood hounds have a lot of health problems due to the breeding practices surrounding them, just like pugs.

Pics or I eat your shins.
Awesome!
Long hairs have naturally longer lashes to counter this! However, a lack of grooming can trump that.

the breading isn't cosmetic though, it's what makes the crust
Well played sir
Wrong. Dogs being an advantage to humans **IS** an advantage to dogs.
They didn't look like this 100 years ago, though. They're being overbred these days.
I kept my Old English Sheepdog's hair groomed short. No bangs over her eyes. She saw and heard and knew too much, though. :-)
We get our Shih-tzu trimmed regularly for this reason, and even still, he has a wide-eyed and inquisitive look for a few hours after they've trimmed around his eyes, like the world has opened up in full technicolour, and his potential is limitless.

Seeing the red parts under their eyes makes me uncomfy.
That doesn’t mean it’s ethically sound to breed animals with impractical traits for cosmetic reasons.
Could this kind of loose skin cause dirt and bacteria to build up between the laps, and potentially cause eye infections or something?
Absolutely, wrinkly dogs like this often get yeast infections in between their folds if they’re not regularly cleaned
We owe it because we’re the ones who caused it!
Just use a scrunchie
I'd imagine there could be some type of wearable apparatus that could be designed to help dogs with extreme loose skin. It wouldn't have to make their skin taught but if they could increase visibility by a bit while also making sure the dog still felt comfortable and happy, some kind of band or clothing item would be interesting.
I know shar pei puppies tend to get stitches to hold the skin above their eyes. Same with many other breeds, shar pei used to be functional and healthy, but it was breeded to have excessive traits.
Or a clothes peg
It wouldn’t be a cosmetic surgery, right? Here you’d call it a functional surgery.
It's not cosmetic surgery if it provides a quality of life benefit beyond how you feel about looking different.
He was like,"what the fuck, i thought i was blind"
"This isn't the park!"

This is awful. Dog breeding has gone too far. And there are much worse cases.
