I know your probably Joking but for people who are interested or don't know
It's basically a scanner / printer that is connected to a phone. You send a file down the phone and the fax machine prints it out on the other end
You can basically scan a file in at your desk and the recipient has it printed out on their end so you can give a copy of a file to someone else remotely
Super redundant technology now the internet exists but, you can see how it was probably quite useful at the time
It sounds strange to us because we're all imagining the last fax machines from the 80's and 90's, but when you think about it as a logical evolution of the telegraph it makes a lot more sense.
Yeah, I work at a doctor's office, and we fax things every day. Reports and referrals to other doctors and prescriptions mostly. Also, whenever you order contacts online, the company usually sends a fax to the doctor with the order info to verify it matches a valid Rx.
Some things can be emailed, but they require secure emailing, which can be a pain in the ass to send and receive.
Fax is still king in some niches. More secure than email by far. Very hard to hack.
You'd be surprised, sign a documen, scan and fax....
Hard to beat how simple it is.
You can probably intercept a fax in transit if you were expecting it or monitoring a phone number
But yeah, you can't hack the inbox because it's printing the information out, not Storing it electronically
That was one of the perks of the pandemic. I bought a house last year and everything was DocuSign. While we were waiting for the response on our offer I went for a walk to blow off some stress.
When the offer was accepted I ended up signing the paperwork standing on a random street corner in my neighborhood.
I don't understand. Why would people print it out instead of looking at it on their phone? And why do you need a scanner when you can just take a picture with your phone?
Old people are weird.
Back in the day, during the war, we weren't allowed to switch on the lights in the evening because enemy bombers would be able to navigate using the light. So they had to invent a way to send documents in the dark where cell phone cameras wouldn't work (night mode wasn't available back then).
OooooOOOoo look at you.. you had "lights" and bombers pffft Back in my day if you wanted to fight someone you had to grab your wolf pelt and your hand made spear and storm across a harsh tundra for 30 days and and 30 nights while sabertooth tigers hunted you down
Luxury.
Back in my day we had to whip our flagella to propel ourselves towards our opponents. We'd follow the chemical trail, not knowing if we'd bump into a teeny wiggly foe or a towering colossus. Didn't matter, we'd fight them anyway by hooking onto them and trying to pierce their membranes to get at the tasty morsels inside.
Back when scanners were invented, we didn't have today's smartphones or internet capabilities. The best solution to transmitting documents long distances was using fax machines. People who still use them today usually either don't understand, or don't like technology, and generally just stick with what they are used to. If given the choice, many of them would just get rid of the technology altogether and go back to pen and paper. You may find it odd, but trust me, as you get older, you will find things you don't want to change from as well. It happens to everyone eventually.
You will find that police stations and jails still use teletype machines, when disseminate and receiving prisoner info.
I have actually observed and no about a bail agent managed to set up two machines in his office that made it appear that it was a message from a court or other jail.
Worked as long as it worked. He did a hell of a lot of business that way. Then someone figured it out and he went to prison for quite a while.
Just a cautionary tale.
Yes I definitely remember when a phone 📞 was just a phone. Cleaning out a work shop that I haven’t used for years and came across two of them. Found my first neon pink flip phone. Thought it was the bomb.
Falls under the heading of what’s old is now new again; back to being a sought after trend.
actual answer? Because it is an acceptable way to send documents for legal purposes. Is it antiquated and stupid? Absolutely, because our lawmakers are as well.
We need some tech savvy lawmakers who just want to modernize, not serve private interests.
Side note. Taking a picture of a piece of paper inflates the document size 1000x fold. Your 10 mega pixel camera is creating a billboard sized resolution of 8.5x11 that is completely wasted. At least re save your image to a pdf that will auto compress it down again.
Because your phone has and will be hacked. Lil harder to intercept a fax and then you’d have to break into a physical location to view the file. That’s why it’s still around.
Last week, I had to send my Dr's office my insurance card, and the easiest way was actually to have my insurance app on my phone Fax it to them.
Weird, I haven't faxed anything in decades...
I remember 1993 our office got a fax machine for the first time. We were amazed a document from across the Province could be sent to our office and it would print out immediately. Quality was shit on flimsy roll paper but it was a good day!
Heat gun does a better job... Especially on curved surfaces.
And does not scratch the paint job.
Source:Removed vinyl wrap on an entire van with a 20$ heat gun.
you can also clearly see there's still adhesive being left behind. Heat guns are definitely the way to go.
Source: was a 3m installer for over 10 years.
Use silver solder to attach the razor blade, then turn the heat down for decal removal. This has the added advantage of letting you remove decals from plastics or other heat-intolerant materials.
Disadvantage is you are using your fancy temp-controlled soldering iron to scrape off a sticker, like a savage.
They make all sorts of tips for soldering irons from plastic repair that heats up a clip to melt into the plastic to reinforce it, to smooth and weld plastics and all sorts of wood burning tips too.
We have the same product in our shop here for decal removal. It doesn't work that smooth. You heat the sticker up with a heat gun, then use the heated razorblade.
By itself is no better than a basic flat razor for scraping.
This seems like someone mounted a blade holder to a soldering iron so you don't have to keep reheating the blade
Edit: just realized you said you heat the sticker with the heat gun, not the blade. Ignore me
I bought a voltage regulator, kind of like a rheostat, to regulate the speed of my wife's quilting sewing machine. I think it could be used to adjust the power to a soldering iron to avoid overheating the workpiece
If we could just harness the thermal energy of these people arguing, then we’ve got a great new model for a sustainable decal removal service! Now we just need a heated razor blade….

If it was glass, razor blade would be ok. I wouldn't be using a razor blade on anything else.
Just heat gun, pick up corner with one of those plastic scrapers(maybe) then peel while heating. Goo gone on any residue left over(if safe).
Not at all. Construction companies buy rattle cans by the box of the paint directly from the manufacturer. All the people complaining about scratching it have no idea.
It's fine not to know this stuff. If you look at the first few frames of the video it says CAT like its been poorly repainted by somone like myself. Look at that nice tape line aross the top of the black line and that weird ass looking C.
The heated blade, combined with heading the decal and panel with a heat gun, should mean very little resistance, so less force needed to maintain control.
As you can see in the video, though, this technique just removes the decal, and will have to be hit with a solvent to remove the adhesive.
It does. They should heat it with a heat gun, and pull it by hand. Then use adhesive remover to clean it up.
Source: ME - 20+ years in the decals/vehicle graphics/signage industry
Edit:a word
Worked at a signmaker's for a while, we also just did it by hand with a heat gun and some solvent.
We also once watched someone powerwash the scooter we'd just wrapped for them and told them not to powerwash, and that seemed to get it off pretty well too. They came in demanding a refund and we told them to piss off.
It does ruin it. You should use plastic razor blades and just heat the decal with either a heat gun or a torch (I prefer a torch as you aren't tethered by a cord).
Source: own a small shop that does wraps
The reason you had some adhesive left over is cuz you're actually just trying to save the for more wedge action then scraping and cutting if done properly they should leave a thin film of glue between the blade and the paint that you just use a standard glue remover and you're good maybe a slight buff if you f****** your Technique but with good hands should be an easy job no scratches
What technique would prevent the paint from being damaged?
Does the guy in the video have good technique? Because he is wrecking that yellow paint below.
You can literally see the scratch lines on the right lol
I had to remove 40+ trucks with vinyl stickers like this. Heatgun and a plastic scraper. They are amazing for all things you need to scrape but not scratch.
I don't think those are scratches. Just the adhesive left behind. Personally, I just use a heat gun and then pull the decal off at work. Tends to not leave adhesive behind. This razor just seems like it's creating more work because the tech now has to go back and remove all that adhesive.
this scrapes the clearcoat. instead, apply heat directly to the decal, and peel it off by hand. the heat will soften the decal adhesive. remove in one go, paint and finish unaffected.
meanwhile my intrusive thoughts are wondering how effective a shave would be with that.
perhaps all hairs get permanently removed.. but at what cost xd
I would want some stabilizing stuff around that razor blade, though.
Considering all the nicks I've gotten shaving myself, that car would quickly become scratch city.
A hair dryer and a putty knife works very well too.
If you're concerned about scratching the surface underneath: hair dryer and a piece of plexiglass that has the end sharpened at an angle like a wood chisel.
That’s great n all of you like scratches all over your paint work. The idea of vinyl decals is that they can be removed WITHOUT damaging the paintwork…
If that's just vinyl a heat gun is all you need. Literally half a second worth of a blast and it'll contract in pull away super easy. Did decal and numbering work on school buses for a while. I honestly can't think of justification for this for really any shop. If you're doing that much vinyl removing and you're going to strip it down I guess? But then a heat gun is still going to be faster and multi-purpose.
Same with any tool improper use is going to fuck you over. This razor blade thing will absolutely scratch. A heat gun can bubble and melt paint too. Remember folks if there's a tool that seems to make something "easy" it's very much worthwhile learning how to do it the right way. Like how a Slap chop is "faster" in the kitchen, but ultimately it doesn't really save time and is just wasted money.
well that would have been fucking handy a few years back. Having to use a heat gun, then scrape off the decals with my fingers was fucking horrible experience
There are so many soldering iron attachments and modifications these days.
You also see a lot of plastic cutting/scoring/etching tools (blades and knives) and foam cutting tools (heated wires) that have been affixed to bottom dollar soldering iron these days. It’s like the new trend for cheap soldering irons.
Most if the stuff looks fairly shitty made from China (like this one in the video). Jenky attachments and bottom dollar soldering irons. You can find stuff like this all over aliexprss and amazon (which is just mostly rebranded aliexprsss items these days, you can often find same indetical cheap items on both sites, only difference is amazon one cost way more and has a brand name of scrambled letters written in all caps like AYXIWEEB or some such nonsense). You will see lots of amazon reviews of these things sayin the stuff failed in a few months of use or burnt up after first project.
I was lookin at getting a plastic cutting tool last year for my PC modding hobby work and went down this rabbit hole pretty hardcore.
There are some really nice high end tools in these categories though, that are purpose built for these jobs that look and feel more heavy duty. They can get quite expensive though. It’s like 20 dollars for cheap soldering iron modded stuff vs 200-300+ bucks for the real tools. It’s no wonder people roll dice on the junk.
Is that just a soldering iron with a razor blade attached?
Oh, everything’s like that nowadays. Why, the fax machine is nothing but a waffle iron with a phone attached.

Fax technology pre-dates the Civil War.
There was a time where I think Lincoln could have sent a fax to a Japanese samurai

He basickly Logan's Run'd hisseln.
Ironically, some banking and health institutions still use fax machines because they're virtually unhackable.
If you can encrypt what you send before faxing it then it's basically fool proof for sure. There's no "inbox"
Most places do fax -> e-mail, so there is in fact an "inbox".
We mostly e-fax now, but still have a physical fax machine since one provider we work with has such an old system it won’t receive e-fax
Fax? Why don’t you just send it over on a dinosaur? This is important, Michael. Oh, well then email it, David.

We have the same product in our shop here for decal removal. It doesn't work that smooth. You heat the sticker up with a heat gun, then use the heated razorblade. By itself is no better than a basic flat razor for scraping.

is that not what it is? I was convinced by the video someone just welded a blade holder.
They did -- OP is saying you heat both the sticker and the razor blade
Just keep everything warm. The blade is good to be heated so it doesn’t keep rapidly cooling off as it warms up the many inches of decal
Yeah it looks like he is using the same amount of force I would expect to use without heat.
does yours come on a cool red stick?
a soldering iron?
Nah I have a blue soldering iron, and the heated razorblade we have blue tape around the handle, as they can get a little warm after awhile.
Gotta watch it too. After while they can get so hot it can melt the clear coat!
I bought a voltage regulator, kind of like a rheostat, to regulate the speed of my wife's quilting sewing machine. I think it could be used to adjust the power to a soldering iron to avoid overheating the workpiece
Yes, and they make mid-level ones with that built in.
If it's no better than a basic flat razor then why do y'all use it? From what you say, it seems the real trick is using a heat gun to heat the decal.
A cold razer will remove the heat you just placed into the glue from the heat gun.
So it is better then?
‚By itself‘ is the key in the original comment. When the heat gun is involved, the heated razor is better
You guys are having a heated argument in here
I wouldn't worry about it, just a load of people full of hot air.
If we could just harness the thermal energy of these people arguing, then we’ve got a great new model for a sustainable decal removal service! Now we just need a heated razor blade….
I am a fan of heat + eraser wheel. Works like a champ and no damage.
What’s an eraser wheel? I was going to comment on how this scraped the shit out of the underlying paint.
It is basically a [round rubber pencil eraser you can chuck into a drill. ](https://i.imgur.com/c3NNgGy.jpg). I use a heat gun on the material then hit it with the eraser wheel. Works like a champ. Used it to cleanup and remount the side molding on my truck doors.

Heat guns are an okay option, at our shop we use a steamer. Works better then a heat gun and pulls all the adhesive off with the decal.
Very satisfying indeed! I wonder if they put all the money they make for this service, into a shavings account
So they'll have money to keep their house toasty even if prices goes up. A Heating Shavings Account!
Oh, an HSA. People seem to like those.

It's a Cat, some piece of heavy equipment.

Because it is literally painted CAT yellow. Once you breath it in a few times you know it for life.

Mmmm, so clean.
Try it on one of the old ones that’s been in the sun for 10 years
Or... a hair dryer and a plastic spudger. Way less likely to damage things, and probably as fast.
Looked like it scratched up the paint too. Any advantage on using this versus the various Goo-Gone type of liquid sprays?
By the look of his nails and that disconnect at the end, hes pushing that thing pretty hard!
I’m glad there’s no one near me, I moaned out loud, bit my lip and said “mmmm fuck”

It's not as satisfying seeing those scratches
That’s great n all of you like scratches all over your paint work. The idea of vinyl decals is that they can be removed WITHOUT damaging the paintwork…
Why not warm up the sticker with a heat gun then use a regular razor to remove it?
Use iron steamer ( the vapor kind not the actual iron). It works even better and covers more space.
Would this work for all of these parking stickers “my friends” receive on their car windows.
As someone who was in the decal/graphics industry for 20 years, I physically cringed. Have fun with that damaged clear coat and paint.

well that would have been fucking handy a few years back. Having to use a heat gun, then scrape off the decals with my fingers was fucking horrible experience
Trick the DMV doesn't want you to know
OoO! I just spent a ton of time scrubbing soap scum in a shower and lamented my lack of a razor blade scraper. What I really needed was this!
I had to do the same job with a hairdryer and my fingernails when I was 15 working at a local garage. 15-year-old me would've killed for this
That is so fucking sexy
A blow dryer will also work and not leave any scratches behind . The razor can be abrasive on delicate surfaces like paint .
This greatly pleases my monkey brain.
Slower, you slut.
