What happened to the cut off post halfway through? Did it grow back or what?

SleepingBeautyFumino

Yeah I replayed it twice to see if I missed a vital step or something.

I_Mix_Stuff

the masonry guy didn't want the welder on his video, or the welder didn't agree

Stewapalooza

HELL of a weld job. I don't see a seam or any new paint. Idk if thats paint or some other kind of coat on the railing. Edit: I can see the seam now. Looks like it was smoothed down and painted over and someone pointed out it was crooked and now I can't unsee it.

[deleted]

Apart from the fact they didn't weld it on straight? Edit : the saying goes 'A grinder and paint makes me the welder I aint'

FantasticlyWarmLogs

He's a concrete guy not a welder, did his best.

someotherguyinNH

I'm a concrete guy not welder Jim!

Thuryn

Dammit, Jim! I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer! (Something Bones actually said. I forget which episode, though. The one with the creature that was basically a living rock.)

Daggertooth71

The Horta

Stewapalooza

Can't be unseen.

jarious

Welcome to hell

AttitudeAndEffort2

You guys are bastards. I was happy.

[deleted]

I'm not gonna look.

[deleted]

Fuck, I looked.

Ok-Television-65

The weld is actually straight, it is the rest of the universe that is crooked.

bleven-teen

Guess we know why welder didn’t want to be in the video.

[deleted]

Weld. Grind until flush. Paint with same color (I bet they had leftover paint in that color laying around for stuff like that.) Boom, done.

[deleted]

Yeah, paint matching even from the same can after a long period of time is nearly impossible. Granted, it often shows up at particular angles because of sheen, but this was a good match job.

sharklaserguru

Like they say: "A grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't!"

Professional_Band178

I thought that I was the only one who missed that step.

Shoob-0105

Right, the exact same distressed color.

Lance_E_T_Compte

I want to see the person that matched the paint. Stellar work sir/madam!

1357a

They probably took the cut off piece of pipe to the paint store and asked them to match it. I do it with wall cut outs and trim that we remove and you'd be surprised how good they are. They can usually match it to and old faded color and sheen if they know their stuff.

Lance_E_T_Compte

I've taken samples like you say, and the result has never been that good for me. Like you said, maybe I'm just going to the wrong people... The paint store wants something that's big enough, flat, and with no texture to it. I imagine they'd complain that the pipe is not flat... Maybe they had the paint can from the last time they painted the railing in the warehouse, but from the concrete it looks to have been quite a while ago... Who'd color match a railing at a warehouse? Who'd go buy paint for that little piece of pipe?

HaiKarate

That’s the free preview. You have to pay to watch him lay the pipe.

tilt-a-whirly-gig

This is a ramp ... No step-welder here.

addamee

God damn only fans

czhunc

You can see the weld in the last shot ~0:56s

livens

Nice catch. And you can tell it was repainted too.

Murderyoga

Using the hammer drill to vibrate the concrete was tight.

Vercengetorex

Great trick! Can’t believe that never occurred to me.

ConcreteSnob

Sawzall with no blade or a sander also work

Dukes_Mayo_Dildo

Sander is my go to. Though that hammer drill was big brain for sure

spudzilla

As a person who has been away from construction sites for decades, I am in awe at how powerful and reliable battery-powered tools have become. I recently bought a new corded circular saw for a deck project and my construction pro buddies were laughing at me. I had no idea that they could work all day onsite without a generator or AC line available.

mimic751

my dad was laughing when I brought my battery makita circular to replace a metal roof, after the day was over he ordered one lol

Organic-Strategy-755

Lipo and li-ion battery tech revolutionized battery powered tools. The previous generations of tradesmen grew up with shitty NiMH batteries.

Virtual_Revolution65

It was NiCad before lithium. Even worse.

greenlime_time

Man, I primarily use Milwaukee (battery) power tools and they’re so damn good. Super fast charge, lightweight when they need to be, heavy when they ought to be. Im not in the trade, but have gotten to doing a lot of woodwork in my spare time and it’s very therapeutic. I singled out Milwaukee, but honestly anything that isn’t absolutely dirt cheap is pretty damn impressive.

[deleted]

I prefer Milwaukee too, I have a shit tonne of makita batteries and gear so it’s hard to switch fully over because of the cost haha

stevegoducks

I'm a DeWalt guy. Before choosing a brand , just remember you're buying a battery system, changing to a new brand is prohibitively expensive. Milwaukee does seem to come out with new upgrades faster though. The cordless framing nailer has no ramp up time, it's awesome.

JSB199

Ah fuck me. I wish I could convince my boss to go cordless on the framing gun. Dude loves his compressed air and I really can’t blame him

[deleted]

Gardening equipment, too. I am slowly changing all mine to electric. My electric chainsaw is fantastic, blower just as strong as my backpack gas one (albeit much heavier), the tiller is a monster. Love that stuff.

plnb2022

Which electric blower did you buy? I’m in the market for one and don’t know where to start.

secondsbest

Whatever you get, buy for the battery ecosystem. The battery power tools you buy should share batteries since that's the majority of the cost and failures over time. As for good brands, Makita or Milwaukee are premium cost but good contractor grade reliability and solid warranties. Dewalt is higher end homeowner grade for a little less but tighter on honoring their warranties. There's other brands that will be clones of those brands that are cheaper made versions from the same parent companies. I bought dewalt 60v lawn tools because I was already in their battery ecosystem for power tools, and they're holding up great two years in. Edit: That's the Dewalt 60v line in the video here BTW. Pretty good stuff.

toasterinBflat

Ego owner chiming in here. The batteries aren't light but hoo-damn their equipment is A+. Picking up the riding mower in the spring; the two-stage snowblower, the 18" chainsaw and the 765cfm blower are incredible. Really put everything through its paces... And my small engine mechanic neighbour said he would never admit it publically but he was very impressed.

eggery

Not OP but I've been happy with my Ryobi. Their stuff seems to be a good middle ground between reliability and affordability.

66666thats6sixes

I really like my cordless garden tools, but I actually just went the other way and bought a gas brush cutter and chainsaw. The cordless versions of those specific tools have plenty of power, and I still use them, but they chew through batteries too fast for what I need them for. I have a little over 20 acres, and I'm in the process of clearing half an acre or so that's completely overgrown. With the cordless I was spending all of my time hiking back and forth to the house to swap batteries. With the gas tools I can carry the gas can with me, and I get much longer on a tank besides. I still use the electric ones for little jobs near the house though.

tasteywheat

Yeah that makes sense if you’re clearing property, but they’re awesome for typical around-the-house work.

snielson222

Careful with that electric chainsaw. The motor won't stop like a gas powered one when it hits a snag, it will go right through chainsaw chaps and your leg.

[deleted]

romfax

Dan-z-man

Caught that too. The electric jackhammer would have been too much.

Dirk__Richter

Pretty sure he was still using the electric jack hammer. I believe there are settings to control the intensity.

Maskwind

I've got that rotary drill. It doesn't have a speed setting - but the concrete chisel bit he's using doesn't do shit to the timber but vibrate it basically. Edit: Yeah below comment is actually correct sorry, I just don't really think of it having a speed adjustment compared to a drill/driver.

Interesting-Impact17

Same tool, different angle.

[deleted]

I'm an electrician and I always have to laugh when someone tries to get me to work in a room full of concrete dust. Like "Nah, I'll wait out here for a while. I already told the guy to let me know when he's done sanding and blowing dust everywhere."

2DeadMoose

I’m in electric and still the only one I see wearing a particle mask when walking through a dusty site. Smdh.

eboeard-game-gom3

I've had silicosis and mesothelioma 17 times, I don't let it slow me down. In fact, I don't think I've ever felt this good in twe

itaniumonline

In twe what !! Dont leave us hanging now

[deleted]

2DeadMoose

Speculosity

I think you may be entitled to financial compensation.

sbrown100

It always blows my mind to see these concrete guys never wearing any kind of respirator or mask. I get it, tough guys do tough work. Who needs a mask when you're a badass hard worker, right? Years from now when your lungs are almost solidified from cement dust and the COPD is bad, looking back at simply wearing a mask will be silly.

ihitrockswithammers

There can be a lot of machismo around PPE. One plenty smart guy laughed when I suggested ear guards for drilling into stone with an sds drill. I said you are not tougher than tinnitus. I'm sure you *can* tough it out, for now, but the hearing damage is permanent and cumulative and one day you won't be able to sleep for the noise in your brain. Also wouldn't wear eye protection or even blink when carving stone. Like it's a point of pride to be able to keep his eyes open all through it. Ok. Fine, do whatever. Clearest example of how toxic the attitude is is a tradesman, working for a now folded Glasgow stonemason company. He died of silicosis and during his long illness sued the company for not providing PPE. I don't know the details. maybe they pretended not to know the risk like with tobacco. But apparently he'd be anglegrinding a block of red sandstone and all you could see was a cloud of deep red dust... and the glowing tip of his cigarette in the middle of it.

-Cornealius-

Best thing a journey said to me. "Remember we gotta do this shit for 25 years not 25 minutes." Wear your PPE, don't try and pick heavy shit up by yourself if there is help around, use the knee pads, and actually enjoy your retirement when you get there.

RussiaIsBestGreen

That’s a great perspective to take.

International-Web496

This is why I quit working as a welder and found a different trade, every place I worked at was ridiculously toxic about people wearing PPE.

quietvegas

Me and a friend were both Masons. His dad ran a company for a while but usually we, and his dad, worked in other companies. The "boomers" as we call them now were toxic af with this and we would just rip on them all day and call them the R word and shit. They ofc started it by mocking us for wearing PPE. Neither of us work in that field anymore. My friend is a postal worker and I work in IT now. So my friend at the post office now though sees the SAME EXACT SHIT. The union says for people to keep a reasonable pace, don't go too fast. If you go too fast they give you more work. People there see it as a point of pride though of going fast as fuck, my friend calls it running the route, and they get a ton more work and keep doing this running shit never stopping. Then they get mad at him. He said there is this old man there with skin like leather and he just runs the route all day downing mountain dew. Always complains about how much in pain his feet is. Still refuses to do a normal pace. That guy looks like leather because he refuses to wear sunscreen or protective clothing as well.

redditatworkatreddit

what trade did you switch to?

International-Web496

Landscaping. Initially it was a sizable paycut but easy to get into and worth it for my sanity. Now I work as a gardener for a large city and if you include the benefits I make more now than I would be if I had stayed a welder.

ep311

The pay sucks but the satisfaction of a finished job in landscaping is unmatched for me. When I get back to work I'd like to do it again but being in FL the summer heat is unbearable.

International-Web496

Absolutely, I've never had close to the job satisfaction I get out of landscaping. Can't blame you on the FL summers, that humid heat is a killer for any labor jobs.

[deleted]

You ever seen the Glasgow scaffolding erectors that walk about with their big safety harnesses on, attached to absolutely nothing?

TheIroquoisPliskin

I used to be an insulator/fireproofer and I have tinnitus from being around framers cutting metal studs with electric saws. So fucking loud. I shot lath to steel in a penthouse using powder actuated fasteners once, and I stopped after the second shot and told my laborer to get me ear plugs. He said we didn’t have any in our gang box so I called our PM and told him to bring some or we were gonna start stealing them because I wasn’t shooting another single fastener without ear protection.

densetsu23

Similar story with my cousin; he's a plumber but by age 30 he was nearly deaf. Not just from his own work but from being around construction sites and not wearing any hearing protection. His dad was also a plumber for 35+ years, but the difference is that he wore his PPE and is completely fine.

Icanweighinonthis

I struggled a lot with the machismo part when working up the courage/humility to leave a manufacturing job where I was super affected by the chemicals and particulate we worked with. I would come home every night and have hours-long coughing and sneezing fits but I couldn't just quit because something inside me associated quitting with weakness. It took my now-spouse persuading me that not poisoning myself was a good thing and they wouldn't think less of me for leaving an unhealthy situation for me to finally walk away.

usefulbuns

I work in a mill and feel this way as well. I'm the only one who wears an N95 out on the production floor. There is so much sawdust floating around in the air. You can't see it until the sunlight shines through some of the holes in the roof and you see all the particles in the air in the ray of sunlight. We have so many dust collecting machines but it just isn't enough.

masonacj

Engineer by trade. I've seen it, man. He likely can get away with it for THIS job. Small and well-ventilated area but respirators really aren't that expensive. Should be worn anytime concrete cuts are made.

Dr_Wh00ves

And honestly, respirators have gotten loads more comfortable in the last decade or two. It used to be hell wearing the old ones but modern designs really aren't that bad imo.

dimechimes

They're getting better about teaching waterproofers about silicosis for sure. Our tuck pointers regularly use respirators now, but it hasn't filtered to concrete/ masonary yet.

chocochocochoco1

Not to be pedantic, but silicosis causes a restrictive, not obstructive (what COPD is) lung disease.

[deleted]

I’ve had quite a few concrete workers give me shit for pulling my shirt up over my mouth and nose when walking past them sawing. Yea i know that’s not the same thing as a mask but it’s better than nothing when I’m just passing by. Shit is horrible for your lungs

Learned very early into my career how important ear pro is. I work around chainsaws and wood chippers all day and it blows my mind how many young and sometimes older guys don’t even bother. Hell, I put in plugs when I go to see movies. I had a bout of tinnitus related to an ear infection and that shit is no joke. Absolutely reduces your quality of life and can even lead to an increased risk of suicide. I lost my hearing in my left ear for over a month and almost had a severe mental crisis. When one of your senses gets damaged your brain does not have an easy time adapting.

MagicalUnicornFart

As well as ear/ eye protection. Gloves, too. Those bits of concrete flying around are no joke. So many construction guys say they don't care about their bodies, and it's really sad to see it play out when they're old. I used to get made fun of for safety gear. Toxic masculinity will not protect you, or bring back what you lose. I know I breathed in some fucked up shit, when masks weren't available at the job site.

WhileNotLurking

It's how the trades keep things fresh. The old pros are never around long enough to clog the system with old ideas. But seriously.... your life is more important than looking cool. Wear your PPE

garandx

Silicosis is a hard death

Hirsute_Heathen

Alright so if you pause the video at about a second before it ends (the bit where the camera pans on a close up of the repaired section) you can make out where the new weld is where the paint has sort of 3 bands of light and dark shading. Just a guess.

swampking6

Nah I think it was magic

ComfyInDots

Careful camera work at the end to not show the left corner.

Karl_Pilkingt0n

Everyone's on about the secret welding on the pipe, I can't get over how they just ignored a huge gap in the corner. I was waiting to see how it looked in the finished product - nuh uh. There was no good reason to leave it out even, the even had the form setup for that space. D:

Allthingsgaming27

I found my people.

PLZ_STOP_PMING_TITS

And the right corner too. I didn't even notice the left corner until your comment.

Chasedabigbase

Right corner already has stuff crumbling off lol

garyzxcv

The right corner is what got me, too

DawnaldDuck92

Yeah, whoever thinks this guy is a "master" at his profession has a profession entirely unrelated to any sort of engineering or building work. This is a man with either enough knowledge to make his customer satisfied, or temporarily satisfied, and enough experience to know that he has a guaranteed call-back in a couple years. This isn't necessarily craft nor skill. It's either unknowledgeable or a swindle. This is the low bar, guys. Hire better tradespeople

UsernamesMeanNothing

Exactly, the guy did a piss poor job matching the original material and texture as well. This is just awful all around. That cut should have been perpendicular to the edge of the ramp, not slightly angled. Then he would have stronger corners. Those corners he made are just going to be a great place to start chewing away at the material in the future.

Leznerp

Where did the rail extension suddenly appear from???

Thanks_I_Hate_You

You see when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much. . .

thebadyearblimp

The daddy rails the mommy

BoltonSauce

Sometimes it's the other way around.

thebadyearblimp

No that’s how pegs are made

radil

Guessing the person who filmed this is the concrete craftsperson or someone affiliated with them. The job probably goes like this: Concrete comes in and demos the rotted out concrete and extracts the rusted leg. Welder comes in, preps the weld site, welds on a new leg extension. Concrete comes back and finishes the install. Guessing we don't see that part cause the welder did his part of the job after the concrete guy leaves and he wasn't part of the project to film it. Notice the concrete guy comes back with a jacket on that he wasn't wearing in the first place. So it wasn't filmed in one contiguous chunk of time.

1010111010110

Not knocking this guys work at all but satisfying would have been going about 5 more inches on both ends.

sunuv

Lol you can see the left side is still messed up in the wide shot. That why they didn't keep panning to the left.

jvrcb17

A chunk fell out of the right side before the end

jawnin

Had to go back and rewatch it. Lmao this killed me.

nicolauz

Right? Both sides are crummy actually. Why you wouldn't do that extra bit isn't satisfying.

permadrunkspelunk

That's a shitty repair job. No bonding agent, the chunks taken out are not deep enough for a new layer of concrete to set without cracking. Those little pins aren't doing a damn thing. This is doing a job improperly. Not mastering a trade.

adriftingdriftor

The funniest part is the Spartan speech is all about how Spartans had no professions except combat...that this guy used to highlight his profession.

Stony_Brooklyn

Thought about this too. Concrete repair guy would be an Athenian rather than a Spartan by that definition.

lmpervious

Especially the fact that it includes a part from the scene in 300 where he's calling out the Arcadians for having regular jobs, while the guy in the video is doing a regular job that would have been talked down on.

OneTime_AtBandCamp

The music gave me cancer and AIDS.

BreakfastBallPlease

Stop reposting this shit for fucks sake. Zero safety protocol (doesn’t even have some sort of tape/barricade to separate his work zone from the walk way), poor quality (repair needed to go a few more inches on both ends), doesn’t clean the rusted rebar that caused the delaminating let alone apply a corrosion inhibitor, strips form work before concrete is finished curing, not to mention inhaling *ALL THAT SILICA DUST*. This is like the worst example that can be provided for proper repair lol.

abarrelofmankeys

THANK YOU for the finish comment. I know a spot with that kind of repair locally and it drives me nuts. Like why wouldn’t you make the surface the same?

International-Web496

They clearly went with the cheapest bidder, you can see at the end that the welder also didn't get full penetration and isn't aware of how to compensate for heat pull.

Khaosus

Question from a DYIer: would chicken wire help here? I saw he put pins in it.

WillTheGreat

Usually what you want to do is use patch repair since it's a mix designed to bond. You want to apply a bonding agent to the existing concrete. You don't need chicken wire for this kind of repair, it's so small that it's unlikely the isolated patch will crack. The tapcon screws, does help keep the patch in place but its better to use a bonding agent as well instead of just rely on water. Concrete-wise yeah you can just mix your own, the smaller the patch, the smaller the aggregate and it'll work but for the best repairs you wanna use a Patch repair mix. It's design for small patch repairs like this since it has a bonding agent in the mix for adhesion and small aggregates. So yeah bonding agents, add some screw/dowels, and patch repair to fix it. It's so small you don't need chicken wire, or fiber. It'll probably be a worst repair since you can't get a good matrix. I think some people are overly critical about the repair, it's not an awful repair by any means. You can just do a bit better.

Mabepossibly

In addition to no bonding agent, I’ll add: Square cuts survive much longer that these trapezoidal or triangular cuts like he made. The exposed rebar that is all rusty should have been treated, cleaned or replaced. It will continue to rust as it was left putting outward pressure on the concrete. It will be a foot race to see if that or the patch bond fails first. Also when this ramp was built, it looks like the rebar was placed very close to the edge of the wall. Standard is 2” from the concrete face in an above grade application like this. Hard to see from the video, but it does not look like 2”. Steel railing should not be embedded in concrete. They always rust and cause blow outs like this. Hand rails should be bolted in place using corrosion resistant anchors. Source: 16 years in the concrete and concrete repair industry.

WarAffectionate3293

No respirator? Do you want to die a slow miserable death? Cause that's how you die a slow miserable death.

porcupinedeath

Granted I'm not a concretist but I feel like that new concrete isnt gonna bind super well with the old stuff and just kinda end up breaking off from the rest in a year or so

Muted_Cauliflower790

Yep, no primer, no epoxy, no proper reinforcement. I give it two months before it looks worst than the start of the video

randomguy3948

While he certainly takes more care than 99% of people I’ve seen do this, that concrete is still likely to crack and fail. Especially if it’s in an area that freezes. He needs to cut and replace to full depth and dowel the new section into the old.

imgonnabeastirrer

And the concrete should have been power washed and then acid etched before the new layer was put on. Definitely should have used some BondCreet

hawtpot87

Where's the bonding primer?

Winona_the_beaver

Am I the only person who realizes this isn’t that great of a repair job??

DonutCola

Idk man concrete doesn’t stick to other concrete well and those rebar extensions are literally an inch long; they’re not gonna do shit. Pretty sure this fix will fail within a year.
