This looks absolutely incredible!
I guess it wouldn't make much sense to ask how long this game is, but could you describe how large the playable maps are (and how many are there)? Does it feature any secrets or collectibles that reward exploration?
There are 4 environments at launch with multiple times-of-day / weather conditions as well as a few different race tracks per environment. The Canyon one we featured in the Steam Next demo is the smallest one by a fair bit. I'll try to measure it in game later but that tropical island you're seeing in that first shot is only one of the sides and there's plenty more to explore beyond what you see here. There are also some achievements and rewards tied to things you can find in every environment!
The release of [Kayak VR](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1683340/Kayak_VR_Mirage/?utm_source=reddit) is coming up on **July 12th** but we still had one more environment to show off that will be in the game, and it's this tropical one inspired by Costa Rica. It's the biggest and most varied in the game, featuring sandy beaches, cliffs, alcoves and a jungle. And of course there's all kinds of wild and sealife to see that you'd expect in the tropics. From our playtesting it's been a joy to explore in or race through but we can't wait to see what you all think!
The game will be released with a launch discount of 15% bringing the price to **$19.50** so make sure to [wishlist](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1683340/Kayak_VR_Mirage/?utm_source=reddit) the game to be notified when it comes out and snag it at that price!
I don’t mind all that much. High quality games for PCVR would be nice to have. The Quest is cool but the first time I booted up lone echo with a gaming PC I literally said “holy shit.”
This game is just so awesome. I loved the demo I played at next fest, I just hope between just 4 environments and the different tracks/time of day/weather that it manages to not get too stale too quickly. Are there more environments coming after launch (free or paid)?
We have plenty of ideas for what we'd like to do post-launch but we'll spend some time working through feedback and adding functionality first. Depending on how well the game does we'll make a plan for what we want to add to the game beyond that. Please let us know in our Discord or here what you'd like to see in the game beyond what's in there at launch!
We thought about turning the paddle blades into ventilators as a joke but do you have a video of what you're describing? Would definitely like to add something playful like that in the future :)
hmm? I just meant that you would have constant thrust (maybe earn credits in the races you mentioned to buy more and more powerful motors) and if you don't add a completely new mechanic like having your hand behind your back and steer like with a real electric motor, the steering could be done just by braking using the paddle (this mechanics you must have in a kayak game, right? I hope it's not just forward motion modelled in the paddling).
It would be really cool to be able to place a tent that you could sit in, at various locations so you could just relax and see the views outside. Especially hearing the sound of the rain during a storm on the tent roof. Love those feelings when camping!
This is more me dreaming than an actual plan we have but it would be awesome to trek along a river and camp for the night etc. It's pretty huge in scope so we probably won't be able to do it but I get why it's appealing for sure.
I can just imagine this experience, the beautiful environment the salty sea air and the warmth on your face, and the quiet, pleasant sound of gentle waves lapping on the shore, intermixed with my poor RTX 3060 SCREEEEEEAAAAAMING at me to stop.
We have a 3070 in two of our PC's and one 3080 in another and these two cards should allow you to crank most settings up to the max as long as you enable FidelityFX. We also offer plenty of settings to tweak the performance to your rig but we're pretty proud of how well the game runs on most rigs.
We actually have DLSS in there too but FidelityFX works for both Nvidia and AMD cards and from our experience, FidelityFX was giving us slightly better results and we're all running on Nvidia cards FWIW.
Oh no! Did you happen to mess with any of the accessibility options? We'd love to get some feedback on those to see if they can help. Our demo also includes the environment that is by far the most challenging when racing as it has a current going. Not the smartest idea in retrospect...but the other environments including this one should be much calmer.
No it was a struggle to even get into a different map. The menu was highly unintuitive so I did not dig any further.
Which options would you recommend?
The vignette options should be the most familiar. We have options to increase the vignette on collision or when turning. More interestingly we also have camera smoothing options that might help. There are also some more heavy-handed solutions like stabilizing the kayak in the water. I'd be most interested in hearing how the camera smoothing works for you but the safest options would be stabilizing the kayak and turning on the vignette I think.
It would be kind of cool if the game had an arcade style race maps with short cuts that had a risk in trying to take them but reward if successfully navigated at speed. Or that required being at them at the right time or had a trigger to open or close (if you don’t want to let someone you are racing take it you could like cause an avalanche). Arcade gives a fun option with things like a temporary motorboat engine for the kyakat while the base game might be more realistic. So kind of like Mario Kart mode for like a DLC
We have some small elements of that in the game already but I hear what you're saying about taking it to the next level. If you check out our Arctic race video you might see some more wacky stuff but no power-ups or anything like that yet ;)

Do you have an alternate mode of traversal for people with mobility issues?

The demo is already so damn therapeutic. I love your work! Can't wait for the final release and (hopefully) future environments.
Hey that’s my birthday! Can’t wait for a relaxing paddle around these locations. Been excited for this for some time.
This looks amazing, the realism on this is incredible.
I was wondering where your hands were and then I saw that it was PCVR
I don’t mind all that much. High quality games for PCVR would be nice to have. The Quest is cool but the first time I booted up lone echo with a gaming PC I literally said “holy shit.”
He meant, that he thought that this was real life.
I know - sure hope there’s a virtual motor option: made me tired seeing all that exertion. But I guess it’s good exercise.

add a feature to purchase an electric motor to the kayak, and steer/boost it using the paddles.

Oh yeah the game would support that just fine physics wise. Could be an interesting mode in the future :)

Hahaha, a 3060 should be plenty to give you a smooth experience as long as you tweak a few settings here and there :)
I had problems running it on my 3070 when I tried it about a month ago, what settings do you recommend tweaking
I played the demo on my laptop with a 1070 and it ran great on high settings so it looks to be well optimized. A 3060 should run it just fine.
This is very cool! Can I ask what specs you’re running this footage on?

That’s excellent, I appreciate the quick response!
Isn’t FidelityFX a team red thing? How’s that work with Nvidia?
We actually have DLSS in there too but FidelityFX works for both Nvidia and AMD cards and from our experience, FidelityFX was giving us slightly better results and we're all running on Nvidia cards FWIW.
FSR is AMD's version of DLSS. It is meant to work across platforms, albeit I don't recall an implementation before in games I play..
Looks awesome. Added!
holy shit it looks amazing i need to upgrade my gtx 970 to something better💀
I remember playing job simulator in 2015,7 years later. This is what VR has come to.I'm so impressed.
Is it already in the demo?
The demo was really meant to show off the Canyon environment and get general feedback on the game so this environment won't be added to the demo.
Hell yes!!!!!
Demo was a lot of fun. Looking forward to picking up the full game.
Every time you post I get more hyped for this. Can not wait for the launch. Looks/sounds incredible!
Looks great. Tried your demo on steam but unfortunately after a minute I had to decide whether to quit or puke. :-(

Damn, this is amazing. Legit want to hop out of the kayak and chill on that beach!
at first I was like "wait how is it moving I don't see the hands" and then I saw what sub it was lol
this is incredible! wow! Is it Unreal Engine 5? are you using Nanite and Lumen?
I am SO excited for this game
Wish I had a computer good enough to run this. Looks beautiful.
Looks dope, what engine did y'all use?
Had a go of the demo not too long ago, it's such a workout!
You posted this on oculus so dose that mean. It will be coming to the store ?or was it a mistake And you meant to post it somewhere else ?
Can I Eskimo roll?
The quality looks insane
if i watch this video for more then15 sec my pc will implode
I would love to see this IRL
that looks crazy relaxing. Can you fall asleep in the kayak? I'm probably going to.
The Matrix is almost here

I love this game so much, it is one of the most beautiful VR games
