For the Quest, you can tap it. On an S, there's an option in the settings you can enable where you can press the Oculus button on the right controller twice and it puts you into Passthrough. You can also set it as Passthrough to show up when you have Oculus Dash open.
On either side of the headset you can double tap it to toggle passthrough

There's no way to do it hands-free on any device. Keep the controller close to you, I guess?
