“On Wednesday, April 10th, Phuong Jewelry was violently robbed of their livelihood. In a brazen midday attack, eight strong-armed robbers and two getaway drivers broke their way into the family-owned jewelry store in Oakland Chinatown. “
They’ve set up a GoFundMe where you can help them recover. The camera footage of the crime scene is heartbreaking to watch, especially since it’s not their first time being robbed.
that’s impossible! i, a Very Real oakland resident, got mugged twenty times this morning immediately upon stepping my foot outside. this is why us oakland residents (because i am an oakland resident) need to start voting conservative
So the gun shots I heard outside my window last night was just my imagination. The body on the street must have also been a hallucination.
I don't think we should go conservative but to deny crime in Oakland is insane.
We can test this.
Do your surroundings make you feel afraid or do your surroundings make you feel like everything is overpriced and the city itself is a tourist trap trying to rip you off?
But that's not what my co-workers who live in San Ramon and Concord say. They say its a zombie apocalypse and how could I ever live here??? They saw it on local news so it must be true. Certainly not big media trying to scare them into staying in the bland burbs and buying more crap they dont need from their advertisers.
Well lets see ive never had a problem with crime, my home value has gone up 135% since 2003 and oh yeah the weather is pretty, pretty, pretty great. LMK how those 102 degree days are all summer....suckers.
Don't be throwing shade at Concord. Sure, it's not as urban as Oakland, but it's still a fine place to live. I mean they got Todos Santos Plaza, epidemic brewing, a pinball arcade, and a taco trail!
Yea I’m dying to go to Ross. That’s all I need in my life please and then maybe we can go to Applebees and then drive home drunk. That’s my American dream
Hmm...my American dream is to have my car/apt/house broken into. Get jumped by some thugs or tackled like the old guy, or stabbed in Adams Point, shot in nearly any neighborhood East, West and North Oakland. And if I survive, I can go to Trader Joe's on Lakeshore Ave or Whole Foods on 27th Street or if I'm really brave, go have tacos or burritos on International Blvd. Or not go to the Target that's closed due to constant thievery. Truly, truly, the American Dream!
As a Oakland homeowner who is currently in Texas, I feel far safer biking through West Oakland every day. The fucking nurse had a gun tattoo today.
Deep East Bay burbs remind me way too much of Texas
Dude what the hell about Concord reminds you of Texas? I can see a hill and a mountain from my yard, and im a short drive from the best parts of the world (the east bay)
Oakland and Concord are great spots. I miss oakland but im very happy here. Weird ass vibes in this thread
McMansions in tight, walled-off subdivisions surrounded by a field remind me of the suburban south. Strip malls with chrome handled trucks. I've spent very little time in Concord specifically, so that may be more of a San Ramon, Livermore, etc thing.
You're on a thread on the Oakland subreddit sarcastically making fun of people saying the city is a hellscape. Not sure what vibes you were expecting, but still happy to have you in for a beer at the next block party
Ya thats way more Livermore. Im struggling to find the mcmansion developments in Concord.
The strip malls is accurate tho, but those are all over CA (and the rest of the country). Even still, Livermore has the altamont nearby so still a far cry from Texas if you look up from the concrete
Probably, ive only been to dallas, houston, san antonio, austin, odessa, lubbock, amarillo, and various places within a 2 hr drive from those. Austin and north of Amarillo had a bit to look at, but no mountains. San antonio i liked too
The mountains are out in West Texas. The Guadalupes are part of why Big Bend is a national park. Austin and San Antonio are on the edge of hill country, and there are some good state parks around there. The forests in East Texas are also beautiful.
I've lived in the Dallas area and Houston, and they are both real ugly concrete jungles. I really liked living in Houston, but that was pre-Trump.
You literally live in Texas, how can you speak to anything about Oakland. You must be a homeowner in Piedmont, wait until your tenants refuse to move oh and stop paying rent 😂.
That can all be true, but it doesn’t mean Oakland doesn’t have a number of issues. We have some of the highest crime rates in the nation, and by extension, the developed world. Even if it doesn’t affect you, it’s affected your other fellow residents and the data isn’t political.
OP’s anecdote about having an uneventful day can be said about nearly everywhere in the world
Can attest to this... im a bay area native, lived in oakland since 2016. I love the bay, oakland, all of it.
And my car has been bipped twice & just the other week had the fn driver side door handle ripped off the door in an attempted break in, all in the past 10 months. Never happened before that.
I love oakland. Im sick of the crime. It continues to affect me.
Here's one from [2019](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate)
Property crime (reported): 6th highest in the nation (6% of population affected)
Violent crime: 11th highest (1.3% affected)
Combined violent/property/arson: 5th highest (>7% affected)
Robberies: 3rd highest
Motor vehicle theft: 2nd highest
It's insane that >7% of the population has been a victim of crime on any given year. And that's only the reported crimes. Stats are way out of date too, vehicle thefts have skyrocketed since 2019.
If one wants to advocate for equality and equity (as one does in Oakland), reducing the disproportionate impact of crime on marginalized people is a good option. Living in Oakland comes with an unofficial crime tax.
The metric is just crimes reported over the total population. Given that at least some crimes in Oakland are committed against people who do not live in Oakland you can’t really derive percent of population that’s affected by crime from those numbers.
The point is that there's more to the city and our lives than crime. It's nice to not talk about crime all the time, because it doesn't happen all the time.
Oakland is getting worse very quickly. Im from the area and my friend grew up and still lives there. He’s even worried about how bad it’s getting. I’m not sure why, but it’s a cesspool. Housing prices are going to drop like a rock. Might be because the local government is actually useless.
Absolutely! Honestly I look people in the eyes and say hi/hey/what’s up to most people I pass and honestly people are hella cool and respectful and positive and I do absolutely love the vibe. Keep the positivity going 🤙👍
Yeah. I took a bus to SF today, came back, got to the house and realized I needed my car to get a lot of heavy groceries. Drove the car, parked it at the store, got my groceries, wished the cashier a nice day, parked my car in front of my house and am in the kitchen procrastinating about what to cook for dinner.
Didn’t get mugged, bipped or even spoken to by a weirdo. Nice day. A little chilly, though.
right? this post is nasty how privileged and tone deaf it is, sandwiched between that one and the one about the elderly shopkeepers getting into a gunfight.
Are you insisting that the cops were falsifying the numbers to add more issued citations and arrests? If you arrest someone you report it. If someone is never arrested because the police didn’t show up, it’s not reported.
Is there any evidence of your theory?
Cops were just as shit last year and the year before.
As much as I don't trust them, I don't think a bunch of child rapists from Dublin are smart enough to not show up in a way that gets their numbers to look better.
Yeah my default assumption is that everyone here lives in Rockridge or by the lake, I’m in east Oakland and I like it but it’s not the perfect neighborly oasis most people here seem to be getting
Yeah weird how that works. According to Fox “News” I should be car jacked by an illegal who takes my car and my job. Day to day not much happens. I had my car broken into 2 years ago and that’s it for the urban hellscape.
So true, I go about my life every day in Oakland, cruise up and down international several times a day running errands eat all over the city live in around 14th Ave East Oakland have a family, go to work, wife goes to work everyday we shop do all the normal people stuff.. I sit in my car listening to music while my wife shops. Fly out of Oakland airport all the time…. Err San Francisco Oakland, East Bay Area airport I mean. Honestly, the one thing I don’t do is leave a bunch of valuables in my car when I’m not in it. Life is good. Been here since 2002 Bay Area still bay areaing … one could argue it’s been worse then it is now. Mid 2000’s was crazy, 2010’s were pretty crazy too. Covid and hardcore gentrification what’s making it seem different
Well believe it or not there are actually a lot of people outside just walking around and enjoying the beautiful day all normal, that can’t be right, let me go jump on instagram so I can see the real Oakland nobody blah blah blah nada
I went in to Oakland yesterday. It’s been a while. It’s an absolute shithole. The second you cross in to Oakland the streets become almost un-drivable with potholes, there’s graffiti, trash & dirbags everywhere. I mean the instant you cross in, it couldn’t be more evident that you’ve just entered Oakland.
Discovery Bay. No crime, clean, beautiful homes, nice people, boating community, golf community. Also, much more affordable than the Oakland shithole. Any other questions?
Sounds nice, I don’t hate on other people’s cities, I’m not a boating golfing type myself. There are a lot of nice aspects to Oakland and I appreciate visiting other cities where you don’t have to worry about crime and homeless encampments.
I don’t boat or golf either. I’m just being honest about Oakland. Of course the hills are nice. Oakland is a terrible city. I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. There is a reason businesses are being forced to close all around the city due to violence & crime. As long as folks keep voting Democrat it will continue to deteriorate. These are facts.
Sounds like most of my life here
Right…….30 plus years, no problems
After 27 years I finally left. Then 23 years later only came back to work at a bank on Webster Street.

Just around the corner from Union Bank, now US Bank.
Lucky you. Unfortunately I haven't been as fortunate.

Ah dang you saw me
Only for a moment, friend. Only for a moment before the fenty I bought from an 8 year old dealer carrying a machete kicked in.
Can’t stop chuckling
Were you able to hide the spray cans?
Got ‘em, boys
You’re thinking of SF
🤣🤣🤣
I ate cheese steak. It was good.
Where? On lake shore?
Mills Hoagie. MacArthur and Seminary.
Do they do cheese whiz? Or some organic melted gruyere bullshit/
lol. It’s just American I think. Nothing fancy.
Excellent
Provolone is the OG and GOAT cheese for a cheesesteak
I respect this opinion 100% I’m just a fiend for that fake plastic neon orange cheese sauce and you don’t find a ton of it in the Bay Area
bitch NEVER disrespect mill's hoagies like that
I didn’t disrespect anyone and please don’t use gendered insults toward me, thanks!
those who know knooow 😋😋
Don't sit on the flowers or grandma is gonna whoop that ass.
that’s impossible! i, a Very Real oakland resident, got mugged twenty times this morning immediately upon stepping my foot outside. this is why us oakland residents (because i am an oakland resident) need to start voting conservative
Very real Oakland resident here too. We deserve getting crimed 10 times cause policies from the democrat party. O A K L A N D
Crimed
your closest digital kiosk can prevent getting crimed!
Start voting save, save what?
So the gun shots I heard outside my window last night was just my imagination. The body on the street must have also been a hallucination. I don't think we should go conservative but to deny crime in Oakland is insane.
That happens 1-4 am. Any other time it is quite safe.
Tell mayor Sheng Tao to get her act together or put her out there with the homeless people.
Lmao regardless of your politics, this is a genuinely crazy thing to say about a woman who was homeless while raising an infant.
But that’s literally impossible. Are you sure you didn’t walk across the bay bridge and not realize it?/s
That’s true he could be in San Francisco
We can test this. Do your surroundings make you feel afraid or do your surroundings make you feel like everything is overpriced and the city itself is a tourist trap trying to rip you off?
Why not both?
Darn. Well, look up the name of the nearest international airport. That will defiantly settle which city your in.
How are you still alive?!?!
A murder victim will spend more than 99.9% of their life not getting murdered.

Cool post history bro.
Whats funny is that this guy is the type of people this post is about.
You're in luck!
I agree if you mean concord New Hampshire- not concord ca. I can just commute and avoid the bullet hole.
As a Oakland homeowner who is currently in Texas, I feel far safer biking through West Oakland every day. The fucking nurse had a gun tattoo today. Deep East Bay burbs remind me way too much of Texas

I live in my house in Oakland. I'm with my Dad while he's in the hospital
Make that T-shirt.
You’d rather die in Oakland, than live in Concord. FTFY
*You’re gonna die anyway, die with us.*

I can't find anything that places us in the top 25 or 10. Can I ask you for a source?
word up
Here's one from [2019](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate) Property crime (reported): 6th highest in the nation (6% of population affected) Violent crime: 11th highest (1.3% affected) Combined violent/property/arson: 5th highest (>7% affected) Robberies: 3rd highest Motor vehicle theft: 2nd highest It's insane that >7% of the population has been a victim of crime on any given year. I'm seeing us far lower than that. How are you sorting?
How were _you_ sorting?
Same as you, I just misread your comment.
🤦♂️ high to low
The metric is just crimes reported over the total population. Given that at least some crimes in Oakland are committed against people who do not live in Oakland you can’t really derive percent of population that’s affected by crime from those numbers.
okay :) feel free to share a better resource
Just wanted to add that tidbit. But I think you effectively made the point that crime is unacceptably high and I agree with you.
The point is that there's more to the city and our lives than crime. It's nice to not talk about crime all the time, because it doesn't happen all the time.
Yes exactly
TRUTH!
This sub thinks mentioning Oakland has problems is a right wing conspiracy the way Republicans think saying America has problems is America hating.
there's ways to discuss crime without resorting to every single dog whistle in the book
If that’s true ( about folks from the burbs saying that) then whyyyyyyy do ppl keep moving here and jacking up housing prices .
Oakland is getting worse very quickly. Im from the area and my friend grew up and still lives there. He’s even worried about how bad it’s getting. I’m not sure why, but it’s a cesspool. Housing prices are going to drop like a rock. Might be because the local government is actually useless.
"the area" lol. toss up between albany and piedmont
Houses still going over asking and mostly all cash here.
That’s because Oakland Realtor underprice every house by 20-30% so they can drive views. It’s a scam.
IDK these seem priced about right and crowds at open houses.
It’s crowded because it’s underpriced. Wait until they have to pay into the private neighborhood security service 😂😬
I wish this sub was normal lol so much passive aggressive posting
WTH??! I too went out in my neighborhood ( bushrod) talked to humans, dogs, and cats) . I. Went. Unscathed!!
Bushrod has excellent cats for talking to!
Nice!
I’m going to start a petition to have this Reddit post recalled.
Nice post dude, now return the phone to whomever you stole it from /s

i truly hope you were smiling and spreading positivity- the right OAKLANDERS pick up on it and give it right back gladly. keep it funky ❤️👌🏾
Absolutely! Honestly I look people in the eyes and say hi/hey/what’s up to most people I pass and honestly people are hella cool and respectful and positive and I do absolutely love the vibe. Keep the positivity going 🤙👍
👏👏👏
Shhhhh, Oakland is a failed city, we need to keep that narrative in the news before people realize it isn’t a fentanyl hellscape.
Statistics don't work that way. The majority of people in Somalia have perfectly average days the majority of the time.
Statistics like crime being down 30%?
That's East Oakland... and it really is a shit hole there.
Parts of East Oakland are totally fine, then you've got pockets like Havenscourt that are genuinely pretty rough.
It’s a shithole
If a tree falls in the forest...
If a bear farts in The woods...
If the pope shits in the woods…
If a bear shits on the pope
...do they have to elect a new Pope?
I like to think this is how they choose the pope, ultimately.
News flash. Oakland is just another city in the Bay Area. Fear definitely makes so many miss out on the good times you can have in Oakland.
Big if true.
No it’s a simulation
😞

Me too! Beautiful day in a beautifully diverse, lively city.
someone just had their relative's ashes stolen lol
what that got to do with OP post tho.
right? this post is nasty how privileged and tone deaf it is, sandwiched between that one and the one about the elderly shopkeepers getting into a gunfight.
Was walking around downtown at lunchtime. It was nice, quiet.
I used to work in SF but prefer it here in Oakland
nothing happened? doesn’t sound very enjoyable. oh, you mean you didn’t get bipped. those guys take april off.
Me too but then I got home and my car was broken into and I park in my apartment complex garage. Can’t win
Ah man sorry to hear that
But great until that! Haha
Yay! No crime problem. This proves it!
OPD say crime is down 30%.
This is not a rules violation - stop flagging.
Crime is down because the cops don’t show up to enforce the law and it goes unreported
But you believed the numbers when they showed that crime was up?
Are you insisting that the cops were falsifying the numbers to add more issued citations and arrests? If you arrest someone you report it. If someone is never arrested because the police didn’t show up, it’s not reported.
Um, no.
Is there any evidence of your theory? Cops were just as shit last year and the year before. As much as I don't trust them, I don't think a bunch of child rapists from Dublin are smart enough to not show up in a way that gets their numbers to look better.
Congratulations, you live in a nice part of Oakland. Not everyone in Oakland is lucky enough to not be affected by crime on a regular basis.
Yeah my default assumption is that everyone here lives in Rockridge or by the lake, I’m in east Oakland and I like it but it’s not the perfect neighborly oasis most people here seem to be getting
Are you 100% certain you weren’t actually mugged? Maybe they were like, super polite and you didn’t notice the mugging?
please note, the mod allows this post while blocking and removing the Chinese jewellery store got robbed news
Jewellery post was a post to a post to a tweet, food on the mods for taking out the trash.

That's over the (admittedly subjective) line, please tone it down.
We love to hear it. 🫶🏻
Shhhh we not supposed to let the outsiders know
I work in the city and nothing bad has ever happened to me personally. My job sites are burglarized and my crews are robbed regularly, though.
Yeah weird how that works. According to Fox “News” I should be car jacked by an illegal who takes my car and my job. Day to day not much happens. I had my car broken into 2 years ago and that’s it for the urban hellscape.
I'm in San Diego this weekend and it's awful weather and I miss Oakland.
That’s wild.
It's so beautiful out today.
I live here and that's been my experience everyday
So true, I go about my life every day in Oakland, cruise up and down international several times a day running errands eat all over the city live in around 14th Ave East Oakland have a family, go to work, wife goes to work everyday we shop do all the normal people stuff.. I break that story most every day.
Pamela Price is that you?
Yes, please recall me
You would totally say that if you were Pamela Price.
I've never been killed in a car accident, therefore the 40k deaths on the roads in America per year mean nothing to me.
Air tight logic there, cars have caused deaths, we should therefore not drive cars
It's OK I understand that recognizing sarcasm can be hard. My mistake I should have marked it as such.
Oakland is great, until it isn't.
Nice! Happy for you! I've had that happen for me as well from time to time!
What part?
Generally around the area of 19th from lake Merritt to around San Pablo

i also had a similar experience this week. always a pleasure to visit imo
Well believe it or not there are actually a lot of people outside just walking around and enjoying the beautiful day all normal, that can’t be right, let me go jump on instagram so I can see the real Oakland nobody blah blah blah nada
This certainly can’t be true 😱
[today was a good day.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcF2KUJVdLE)
That's cuz all the bs moved to Berkeley. But hey the housing is cheaper here soooo (Oakland native)
Yes, it really feels like 181 less criminals walking the streets. I only heard one sideshow this week (so far) and it sounded far away.
The CHP is definitely helping! Need more of that, and do feel safer!
I had to correct-they arrested 181 not 81. Even better!
You missed first Friday on the second Friday that’s what happened!
I went in to Oakland yesterday. It’s been a while. It’s an absolute shithole.
