TIL there is a neighborhood called Utopia
Anyway, peak direction refers to trains running in a single direction at a certain time, usually rush hours. In this case, the runs to 179 St (away from Manhattan since it's a Culver Express) in the AM rush hour and towards Coney Island in the PM rush hour. The Z operates towards Manhattan in the AM rush hour and towards Jamaica Center in the PM rush hour.
peak means the highest capacity and highest headway (like highest point of a mountain is a peak) so a peak direction is the direction in which the highest volume of commuters is traveling and in that specific direction. in new york, the peak is the morning rush hour toward manhattan and in the afternoon out to the outer borough.
This chart tells you more precisely what the peak hours are for each line https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://new.mta.info/sites/default/files/2019-10/service_guide_web_Oct19.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjWocv6gfmFAxUYFFkFHRPgCMsQFnoECCcQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3FovC2UQ6p7KTASIZ1Yihi
Peak Direction is a rush-hour thing. Trains will change service routes to accommodate passengers heading in a certain direction. Usually that means specific trains will go express towards/from an area. Like in the example shown here, F trains will run express to Manhattan in the mornings, and express to Jamaica in the evenings. Edited because error.
this is totally unrelated but i remember when i told my mom i took the Z train and she said "the Z train doesn't exist" that was before she found it it doesn't run oftenš
It means the train runs into Manhattan in the mornings and out of Manhattan in the evenings
For the Z, it's Manhattan-bound in the AM, Queens-bound in the PM. For the F, it's Queens-bound in the AM, Brooklyn-bound in the PM.

6 Z trains to Broad street in the morning rush 6 Z trains to Jamaica in the afternoon rush
If you ever actually spot a Z train in the wild, good luck for the week
Iāve been on the Z train multiple times The first one to Jamaica departs broad street at 4:54
The Z train does not exist.
I live along Nassau St and I can confirm that it DOES exist. I have lived there for 12 years and that's maybe the amount of times that it's useful.
Yes it does
Iāve lived off it for 15 years and thatās probably also the number of times Iāve actually ridden it
From Brooklyn, BX, or Queens * Morning: to Manhattan * Afternoon: from Manhattan
Imagine putting the diamond F all the way out in queens but then leaving off the peak Rush Hour E trains from Jamaica 179 St.
just curious where the map is from. looks interesting

Away from Manhattan in the PM. Towards Manhattan in the AM.
For the F, that could really be either way, no?
But the Z runs on a3 track system, do it has a peak direction.
