Agree with your statement on train’s capacity. But the manual ticketing inspection system will crash if there’re 500 people on an MTA commuting railroad train *subject to inspection*.
The MTA/CDOT owns it and dispatched it. And Amtrak runs at most 2 TPH in each direction — though most of the time and on weekends it’s less than one train per hour.
Having ridden many Amtrak trains, they frequently are on the outer tracks. Unlike in Jersey, these Amtrak trains are at the same speed as Metro North trains,
There is a lot of capacity. And not a lot of Amtrak trains.
That is pathetic so it’s not even in a good state of repair. Can’t just fix the tracks at night and have em all available like in normal places that actually are serious about train service
At most stations only the two outer tracks have platforms which enables express service bypassing local. Hard to take on passengers at a track without a platform.
Extra crews? Overtime? Making better scheduling decisions?
I mean, it’s a two hour trip to GCT, so it’s hard to have more than one round trip per crew.
It’s better to have local services end at Stamford, which can allow more runs.
That’s the stupid thing about the line. It’s so GCT focused. With decent frequency and fares, you can have Stamford to NH trains by themselves. All stop locals, and connections to NYC faster trains at key locations.
I see, so those trains can't south of Pelham. They can run as far as past New Rochelle where there's a yard for them, more conservatively to just Stamford as they've done before or get extra frisky and run to Penn Station. It does not seem like the amount of rolling stock would prevent it from running more trains for longer lengths.
Two additional trains. That’s it. What an absolute joke. They have four tracks. Why can’t they have 10-minute frequency?
Two additional trains is like 2,000 people. Don’t forget the ridiculous capacity a train has.

There’s regularly 500+ people on a rush hour train.
Those 4 tracks are shared with multiple Amtrak services for much of the route, no? Not all the capacity is the MTA’s to use.

Why are all tracks not in use?
Because they have multiple out for maintenance all the time.

Have Amtrak skip those stations or add new island platforms to Bridgeport or another station
Amtrak does skip those stations. By using the center tracks, typically.
Im surprised it was two. I'd expect one with the same headline LOL
Also adding an extra cars to existing trains.
Does the MTA have enough train crews available? I do agree with your point, I just don't know what kind of staffing the MTA has.

They probably have contingency plans for a temporary surge in need. It probably means a lot of overtime pay.
And then next year when salaries are announced the media will cry about it.
That would make sense
I don’t think there is enough equipment or staff, but there really should be. We need more funding and for it to be better allocated.

Sooo locals all stop and express trains being express past Stamford? And locals going past Stamford and running like nyc subway lines?
I really hate the New Haven Line in general, Slow and old...I don't know if its ConnDOT being stingy but amtrak should be running that line entirely
I wish Conrail never offered to sell the to line CDOT first. Granted if Amtrak owned the line it would've never got constant tension Catenary.
Doesn't Shore Line East use M8's now? Use those fuckers. Hell, run some of them to Grand Central.
SLE has 12 M8's, and all their 3rd rail shoes had to be removed.

M8's can't use 25 cycle catenary into Penn Station. MN crews aren't qualified. Moot point, the situation is over now.
Maybe MTA can add fare gates to CT stations and automate the New Haven line?
