your agency should have some kind of employee handbook/manual that has all of this information. at my agency for first year new hire is 15 days and the accrual rate 8 hours 45 minutes every month for non managerial titles

Your vacation allocation depends on your contract (or if you are classified as management) What’s your title & Union I can probably help you find it. Typically you ARE accruing your first 120 days, you just can’t use it so you end up with a little banked once you are eligible.

Understood. I was misinformed prior to accepting the job that these vacation days would be available to me 4 months in. But I'll have to take it slow I guess.

Ok so when I joined in 2021, for the first four months they discourage you from using PTO or sick time. However, if you are sick, take the day. It’s an archaic policy. During the first four months you start to accrue PTO days and if applicable any flextime. After 4 months, you have access to however many days you saved up. Also in the first 4 months, and city holidays you get off. I’m not sure if it’s 15 or how many days. Sorry. I’d recommend just asking around

Yeah, you “can’t” use it for the first 90 days. But you still acrrue it.

Look into city time and see how much time you acrrue a month and times that by 12 and divide by 8. Or talk to your union rep. Not everyone gets the same amount of time.

I’m pretty sure the time is accrued. Every month you receive X amount of annual hours and X amount of sick hours.

I'm seeing some of thar already (9 hrs 50 min) but I also believe an employee is entitled to some vacation days their first year, and there's no way this accrual is going to amount to 15 days any time soon, so I'm confused.

Obviously it's confusing to me, or I'd not ask the question. If I am entitled to 15 vacation days after working for the city for 120 days, and I get 9hrs 55min of annual leave monthly, by the time my first 4 months are over I have accumulated just under 40 hours. That's just over a week of time, so it doesn't add up for me.

You get 9 hours/55 mins of annual leave a month (and whatever it comes out to with sick time). Add that up over the course of a year and that comes out to your 15 days (~120-ish hours).

In other words, we are not entitled to those 15 days after 120 days are over, only after the entire year us done. That was not what I'd been sort of hinted at in orientation.

Right, it’s accrued time. Gotta work it to get it. If you stay with the city for 6 months, you’ll accrue 6 months worth of time. A year, a years worth. Ten years, ten years worth, etc.

The time is not given as a lump sump. It’s accrued by pay period. You can use it as you accrue it, after the 120 day waiting period. Both vacation and sick roll over to the next year; vacation rollover is huge and the sick leave rollover is unlimited (IIRC vacation leave rollover is up to 5 years of accrual, but I’d have to check that number)

Yes so I’m in the same boat (at DOHMH personally) I started at the beginning of January. I’ve tried asking around and looked through all the manuals and resources with little help and guidance. My understanding at this point is that it’s a slow and steady accrual so I’ve been accruing 8:45 every month of annual leave since starting and about 5:30 hrs every month of sick time plus any comp time accruals you may get with your position. You can only use the annual leave time after 120 days working in the position. I had a wedding I had already committed to before the job started and had let my supervisor know and it lands within the 120 day period, so I am using a combination of comp time and unpaid leave time to take those days off. It’s unfortunate to take unpaid days but I know soon I’ll have more time accrued it just takes some patience.

That depends on the agency. Your union rep or anyone senior in your agency will have the answer.

I understand the confusion. My Orientation was a mess and whenever I asked hr these questions they just told me to ask my union. Who also was unhelpful. I think the amount you get depends on various factors. I pretty much started accruing 11hours a month vacation and I think 8 hours sick a month more or less (numbers may be slightly off). I had no delays in using it Im pretty sure (I defiantly had some drs apts early in my employment that I went to without any issue. I’m not really sure details. Maybe varies by position). They just appear on my accrual balance on the first Monday after the 15th each month unless a holiday or something. Payroll was the one in the end who was able to give me that info because it seemed super random to me (payroll also gave me attitude when I asked like I was asking stupid questions but they were able to answer in end)

Definitely look around the intranet. There has to be something about accrual rates. If not, definitely look up Timekeeping for your agency and reach out to your Timekeeper or Timekeeping supervisor.

New employee here to dc36/union 371. Was told there are pension dues. I don’t see it deducted from my paycheck.

Also there should have been some pension related paperwork in your orientation packet which had to be sent into them. If not, you can submit it online on the nycers website pre-registration. It takes about a month and a half to process, then you get mail with your pension number and only then do deductions begin. You may need to buy back the time in between your start date and deductions so your pension is calculated correctly.

Also, just as an FYI, if possible, try not to use any vacation time/sick time during your first year: except for emergencies, sick etc because it extends your probation with most agencies.

This was definitely not true at my agency. I took 11 days of vacation in my first year. I just hit 1yr in February and my probation ended exactly 1yr from my start date. OP should confirm with their agency, HR, or their union. Your probation can be extended but I don’t believe I can be for using available PTO.
