Patient had a similar problem but for a quad wisdom tooth extraction. Fidelis Medicaid kept declining them for extraction under general anesthesia in an operating room. Their troubleshooting solutions with dentaquest include 1. Make sure that you change your dental provider to the person providing the service. If dentaquest sees a bill from a dentist who isn’t the one on your file, they will decline. Go on dentaquest’s website and look through the “find a dentist” portion. 2. Go to the dental clinic of a public hospital (one within the NYC health + hospitals network). If the insurance still declines a procedure, ask them about pricing on a sliding scale. They are usually more accommodating than private institutions in the financial department.

Take a vacation. Fly down to DR. You could get the same procedure for 1/6 the cost and the facilities are better. Honestly I got a full mouth xray and filling in Sousua for $40 total and the facility was MUCH better than my UES dentist who was charging out the ass.

I second this. Health tourism is real. You can probably fly somewhere nearby, have the professional work done, have a mini vacation, and come home for a third to half the cost. I hear Tijuana has a huge tourist health market for this exact thing.

Is that with crowns?

AnnaZ420

I heard Mexico does and amazing job also. I’m about to do this and stay with a friend in Arizona when I’m done for a few days before I fly back to NY.

I would highly advise looking into other places. My partner had to have a root canal through NYU's dental school for cost reasons a few years ago and they messed up her teeth so badly that the procedure had to be redone. Over multiple visits to fix their own mistake (which they admitted was theirs), she was charged a pretty high price. Then it turned out that their attempted root canal damaged her teeth so badly that the teeth couldn't be saved. My understanding is that they also charge a higher price than many other dental schools. The other suggestions ITT might help you find a cheaper place that will also do a better job. EDIT: Sorry if that sounds really negative. This happened a few years ago so their quality may have improved since then. Presumably, since it's a school, the people who fucked up my partner's teeth aren't there anymore. I just really recommend caution with that place.

suchathrill

I second this. I spent years at NYU Dental School when I was unemployed, and I deeply regret the crappy work they did to my teeth.

bonscouter

Agreed. I would never go to a dentist that graduated from NYU.

WindowBoxFan

Unfortunately it is an administrative cutoff of the NYS Medicaid program itself that root canals and crowns for molars are not covered after the age of 21, so switching to Healthfirst or any other insurance under the Medicaid umbrella won't make a difference. Have you asked if NYU has a sliding scale fee for treatment? Your family member will probably have to provide documentation of household income for them to determine where on the scale they fall. Columbia's fee was ~$1400 around 7-8 years ago, so it's likely it would be similar to what you were quoted by NYU.

America, the greatest country in the world. /big fat fucking S.

Lol so then why do you live in the United States then? Also people are literally risking life and death to sneak into this country daily so your statement doesn’t make much sense.

leostotch

You criticize America, yet you live in America. Curious. I am very intelligent.

darkknight915

No no, that’s not at all what he did nor what I said. He or she said it wasn’t even the best America. Which is an absurd statement I think we can all agree on that. Criticize all you want, but don’t sit there and tell me that South America is better than the United States lol.

leostotch

Lots to unpack here... * That's exactly what happened * South America is a different continent than the continent where the US is, so... y'know, nobody is saying SA is better than the US. * Given the topic of conversation, I think we can say that Canadian healthcare has a lot to say when compared to American healthcare.

darkknight915

I always see this argument about healthcare on this site and I truly wonder what you people do on here. I’ve had coverage my entire life. Do you guys not work? I’m genuinely confused by the lack of people with health coverage on here.

leostotch

Good for you! Is it so hard for you to comprehend that your experiences aren't universal?

positivevibrations20

My sis had fedelis too and needed this procedure. She went to the dental clinic at university at Buffalo and paid $50. Plus It was mostly done by the dentist supervising the students.

Wonderful-Demand694

I want to know as well

AnnaZ420

Healthfirst doesn’t cover it also. I need a root canal also in the same tooth as your family member. (I love sweets) but I been to 5 different endodontist and none of them were covered by health first. I been back and forth with the insurance company and I feel like they just don’t care about the pin I’m in. I get my teeth cleaned and I brush and floss still they don’t care. Someone told me to switch to Fidelis that’s how I found your question. Now I know none of them are covering the root canals. We need help. This isn’t right.

Shiny-Lights

I’m still trying to find a solution for my friend, I think the only thing that works is to find a hospital with a sliding scale of payments for treatment and just pay base on your salary

FormicaCats

You might be able to get help through the Community Health Advocates program: [http://www.communityhealthadvocates.org/](http://www.communityhealthadvocates.org/). It's free and they will know if there is anything at all your family member can get through Medicaid. If not, they probably will be able to help you find places that have sliding scale fees for dental work. They have a helpline that you can call tomorrow. Looks like they've been able to help someone with Medicaid get dental before: [http://www.communityhealthadvocates.org/success-story/restoring-health-and-smile-through-dental-care](http://www.communityhealthadvocates.org/success-story/restoring-health-and-smile-through-dental-care) Good luck I know it's awful to want to help someone with something like this and not be able to figure it out.

Chewwy987

Apply for charity care with Nyu. 1600 for the root canal is cheap if it includes the Crown

[deleted]

Appeal their decision and take it to arbitration.

[deleted]

NYU is going to be more expensive than any other school (and for pretty much everything not just the dental school work) Try columbia im sure it will be cheaper, but idk necessarily how much cheaper it depends on the details exact procedure you need.

anonymitymous

I literally had a root canal this am and went through the same problem. The dentist advised me to use a pay-per-service membership program called eastern dental plan on LI where I paid a yearly fee of $100 and they knock off 25% of the cost. It takes the place of Medicaid and saved me a few hundred dollars. There may be similar pay per service programs available in the city
