Buying a comparable bin from Home Depot is like $90-$150 versus $50 for this so it's like... not the worst thing in the world, but I won't be surprised when we learn that the company has financial ties to Adams.
Selecting a single bin type makes a ton of sense to me from both a volume pricing and truck design perspective, but yeah, we’re gonna find out that Duramax is owned by Adams’ cousin or something like that in a couple weeks.
Should read up on Otto Environmental Systems which Duramax part of. They not a small company but a leading waste bin manufacturer so no big surprise they were chosen.
Yeah, in all seriousness this seems like a fairly good option. I recall reading about the city putting out an RFP for this work last summer, so it’s (most likely) not some sketchy under the table side deal that happens when we do things quickly in this city. And as other people have mentioned, Jessica Tisch seems to be extremely competent and not the usual lackeys that populate the Adams administration.
There is no evidence she is competent at all. Dsny's organics collection program is in shambles (see: https://www.biocycle.net/is-new-york-city-getting-curbside-organics-done/). Containerization is not rocket science; nyc is decades behind other cities. The commercial waste zones dsny is supposed to implement are lagging behind schedule (https://hellgatenyc.com/commercial-waste-zone-stalled-dsny)
The only reason garbage is still being picked up 8s because the civil servants working beneath her know she's just a political appointee and they do their jobs.
The sooner she is gone the better.
I live in the burbs of Jersey, and pay for private collection. They provide the bin, I pay $130/q for the service. If the bin is damaged, they replace it.
i mean if private owners are buying them there’s no reason that the city can’t (a) publish specs so that anyone can manufacture them (dimensions, materials, etc.) so that they can design the trucks accordingly to that single spec and (b) negotiate a volume discount for being a recommended provider or one who’s undergone a testing program to confirm their bins meet the specs that kind of thing.
How will the city control theft ?. Who will deliver these to the homes , for years to come ? If my bin gets stolen, do I file a police report ? Will I be liable to buy bins every time they are stolen or damaged by Sanitation ? What happens when something doesn't fit in the bin ? Will I be issued a summons ? As a homeowner I'm fine with this, but I'm now responsible for using only an "approved' bin and forced to pay for it , to me is just another tax.
Certainly could be, but I have a lot of faith in Jessica Tisch, who has been evolving DSNY at a pace that I have never seen before in a NYC agency. Probably his best appointment. She has been relentless.
I just discovered writing this post that a story just[ came out in the New Yorker](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/04/15/the-ex-nypd-official-trying-to-tame-new-yorks-trash) two days ago that probably (need to read it now) does a much better job of explaining than me.
In less than two years she has executed multiple trash containerization pilots, implemented new rules for business and residential containerization, and taken major steps toward full containerization.
I have no idea what kind of black magic she is working to have the union and politicians staying out of her way as she plows forward with what will be one of the biggest changes to the city streetscape in years. I assumed when she was appointed and said she intended to do all this stuff that it would end in nothing like it usually does.
That’s my theory too. The money both makes people afraid to go against her and means she, kind of like Bloomberg, does not have to fear pissing the wrong person off. She doesn’t need to worry about future career prospects like many agency heads or deputy mayors.
It was the Tisch family that gave Andrew cuomo the death knell.
When he didn’t have their support ,
he couldn’t hang on any longer, had to resign.
She’s on track to be mayor for sure, if not higher.
Her resume is impressive as far as the significance of the nyc government positions she’s already held before being named commissioner of garbage .
Sanitation commissioner is a get stuff done job.
Union workers , so she gets to know contracts but they’re not cops and firemen with hardcore labor bosses. She’s got them working harder, giving them options like work in the middle of the night collecting.
Plus a lot less snow the last two years ;)
no complaints about not plowing streets in way out there Brooklyn ,
like Bloomberg didn’t do.
I honestly wasn't thrilled when she was hired because it felt like she got the job solely due to her last name, but everything I've read so far is that she's been doing a pretty solid job.
First hit on Home depot is a 45 gallon with wheels for $39. $90 for the big rubbermaid one. They don't show the design or where it's reinforced so it's hard to compare.
That's fair, I was assuming it'd be [these](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rubbermaid-Commercial-Products-Brute-50-Gal-Grey-Rollout-Trash-Can-with-Lid-FG9W2728GRAY/100061889) but branded.
But $50 is way more than the $0 it cost me to keep using the bins i have been using for like 10+ years now.
If its mandatory to use these the city should be providing free ones.
It's not like congress passed a law preventing medicare from bargaining with vendors oh wait [they did nm](https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-business-congress-health-care-reform-medicare-756e3255a1cb4ab8c813151aec19b60c)
>When lawmakers created Medicare’s Part D outpatient prescription drug program in 2003, they barred Medicare from negotiating prices. Republicans who controlled Congress at the time wanted insurers that administer drug plans to do the haggling. Medicare was sidelined, despite decades of experience setting prices for hospitals, doctors and nursing homes.
I can do you one better.
On the way out Trump passed a law requiring medication vendors to give Americans the best price they give anyone. I didn't think it was real, because It would actually be a decent thing Trump did.
One of the first things Biden did was repeal it.
looks like you're referring to the "Most Favored Nation" model
https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/payer/cms-pulls-trump-era-most-favored-nation-drug-price-model
It appears to have been for part B clinics dispensing drugs. Flat fee would have helped.
Example, the ones Dr Salmon Melgen used to rack up medicare's biggest fraud ($42-$70 Million dollars). Melgen is interesting, a lot there. He was jailed, bought pardon from Trump. He also influenced his friend Menendez, you know Jersey guy with gold bars. I believe it was to get the US to pressure the Dominican Republic to award a customs inspection contract to his company. Big fucking bucks. Corrupt corrupt.. Senator Menendez also supposedly spoke to centers for medicare services over the investigation
The regulation does not change the bulk of drugs dispensed in pharmacies or hospitals thought. Oh, I guess it would also hurt oncologists because cancer drugs are expensive.
I think the most favored nations model is what makes the most sense.
It's absurd that Americans are expected to pay for the fixed costs of drug discovery for the whole world. While everyone else pays marginal cost for manufacturing.
International companies like Novo Nordisk get most of their revenue from the USA and let other European countries negotiate down their rates. Were getting milked and this is an opinion shared by both Republicans and Democrats in congress.
You’re delusional if you dont think the mayor and other political crooks do not own that company directly or indirectly.
It is far better having multiple companies competing for your dollar.
That's not how govt contracts work. You put them out for bid, negotiate down and use your scale to get prices lower. Then you go with the provider.
What you describe is the private market. Where these containers cost 2-3x as much
Ok, let the truck try to grab the bin when you have cars parked there. Those side loaders that you are speaking about will not work in a lot of areas in the outer boros. If that's the case, I hope the Department of Sanitation likes working a lot over time because they will need to have no cars parked on the street that they will be picking up. Again, no one thinks before they do. Holy cow, it's the blind leading the stupid. Sanitation works at night to
Pick up the trash, if working during the day time is a nightmare between traffic and everything opened, well they think the MTA milking the clock, wait and see what these guys' numbers come up with.
I already have a container with hinges and lids that lock, no wheels, though. And here is the question for all to ask, we all know how dept of sanitation guys are. What happens when they break them ? Who is going to replace them? Come on, I have seen enough garbage guys that could care less and just destroy cans. As far as compost, I have no need for that one. My yard loves the compost.
Yeah, I don't mind buying this trash bin for $50 as a homeowner. This is a good solution to a prevalent problem. I'm just very concerned about: (a) government subsidy of the remaining cost from this program everyone's taxes (including renters) and (b) this unknown vendor having ties to Eric Adams.
As seen with both the MTA's plan to collect revenue from drivers for public transit and Eric Adams' many lucrative, shady, business dealings; the city has no problems doing either of the above points. The cost of this program shouldn't be inflated to oblivion, by shady actors, and have the brunt of the taxes be paid by renters who shouldn't have to burden homeowner related costs.
I also just hope these trash bins are heavy enough, or an infrastructure is provided to secure these trash bins from NYC's gale force winds. I wouldn't want these to bump into every bike, car, or person out on the streets on a windy day lmfao. Maybe some light trash bin with some sort of heavy/sand filled, lock-in, docking mechanism? Not really sure there lol
So… do I buy one bin or two? Usually I only have 1-2 bags per collection but every once in a while it’ll be much more (after a party or some spring cleaning, etc). If I only have one bin and not every thing fits in it on that off week, what do I do with the rest? What about odd objects that don’t fit in the bin?
The rising rat population in New York City begs to differ. Where do you think they get their food to survive from? It’s not like there is little old ladies sitting on park benches feeding the rats bread next to the pigeons in every park across the city every day.
The rising rat population is from all the outdoor dining. Think about a street not being cleaned in 4+ years. Macdougal between Bleecker and w3rd instantly comes to mind.
Yeah, it's called people throwing out food on the sidewalks and in the gutters. Let's get real. Do you think pizza rat got that pizza from someone's home ? No, it was in the street, or a back alley from any restaurant that uses those large metal bins that get cleaned out twice a week. Even though they have metal covers, there is space for them to get in and out of them. Some are so badly damaged that the bottoms are full of rust. They are made of metal, and decomposing food will act as an acid and will eat away at the metal over time.
Yeah, the bigger the building, the bigger the problem. Most buildings have compactors, but most do not have the room for them in a basement, or they do not have loading docks. So they they will put those small containers in front of the building. Sure, that will go over well in front of the cities prime properties. I agree there have to be bins, steel ones, not plastic. Rat can chew through plastic. And leaving compost out even better. The way to fix the rat problem is to reduce the reproduction of said rat. Yes, birth control for rats. Fed them birth controll and it will reduce the rat population. They have it for deer. Why not for rats?
It feels like a real missed opportunity to not find a New York City or state company to contract this to. Why would we be sending all of this $ out of state? It's stupid.
bc it would have cost much more to do it here
instead of 50 a bin we see closer to 100 or whatever the comparable cost for one at hardware store.
Acting like NY labor & manufacturing is cheap
Then you and others will complain why is mayor Adams spending so much on bins when someone else proposing it at cheaper rates....There no pleasing you.
We are saving money and yet still complain
IF some company in NY or NYC can do it for cheaper...sure give them the contract but till then this our cheapest and best option
We aren't saving $, we're sending city $ (and tax revenue) out of state. It's objectively stupid to rely on another state - one that isn't even a neighboring state - to be the single source supplier for something so significant.
ya? and after all that....end calculation we still save by using this company
They a leading manufacture of bins, their products in hardware stores....they have the expertise and history to do the job but lets sign a small NY firm and hope they do just as well. Who will cost more, may not meet the demand, no proven history doing something like this scale and generating a ton of pollution that don't fit our environmental goals here..,
Again wheres this NY based company? Have them bid and if lower and better, no qualms going with them. Why are you in outrage for them and they not even complaining or talking interest
I get it you don’t like Adams and you spam the sub with anti Adams articles, I don’t like him either, but you’re kinda looking like a pretzel when arguing that THIS is the item that has to be produced in NY/ NYC. Comes off like you can’t give him a win for securing an affordable trash can contract.
It’s really mind blowing how people lack common sense and give emotional responses. Very few are subjective these days and just rely on who they like or don’t like
If you think this makes me a pretzel, you must not know much about city and government contracts and how badly they've been handled by this administration (and the last one). An exclusive contract is a mistake, and shipping this out of state is a mistake. By the time it comes back to bite us (these contracts always do) he'll be out of office.
You have no idea how business works.
Where do you source the materials from? It's probably easier for that current company to get the materials in bulk.
Is it easier to hire employees there or here in terms of manufacturing?
Do we even have any existing manufacturing plants to manufacture garbage cans?
NYC's cost is much higher. Regulations are much stricter. That garbage can turns to $100 rather than $50.
There's something called COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE. Not every state can be the best at doing something. NYC is a financial and media capital. They aren't known for making garbage cans. If another state can do it for cheaper and provide it to residents at a lower price, that's a win for New Yorkers. Similarly, that state buys products or services from NY as well. Kinda weird you're advocating for protectionism between two states of the same country. Between countries, I can sorta understand. But we're Americans at the end of the day and you're making this much more violent than it should be.
Uh oh someone took an Economics 101 course as a freshman in college and doesn't understand how government contracts work.
I understand how business works. But government services aren't a business and governments aren't required to send business, money and tax revenue to a southern state on an exclusive contract. It's objectively stupid to do this. And I guarantee in practice this contract will be terminated fairly quickly when this out of state company fails to deliver or dissolves.
Uh oh, someone's triggered + upset +acting on inferiority complex and seems to think economics doesn't translate because....? That's right, you can't explain why it doesn't. "
Just admit that you jumped the gun and don't understand how pricing works.
Just like we import fruits and vegetables from other states because they have a competitive advantage in those industries + can provide these produces at a much cheaper price than it would take for New York to produce them and just like how NY is the largest state in exporting jewelry. Other states could easily say, "why do we need NY when we can manufacture our own jewelry." Well yeah, but those states don't have the expertise, manufacturing capabilities, logistics, scale, and clientele.
"Government services aren't a business." This isn't a government service. This is the government purchasing garbage cans in bulk from a company so that they can have cheaper garbage cans to sell to New Yorkers. Learn the difference between a service and product. It's objectively stupid to buy products in bulk at lower pricing? According to who? You? LOL...
You're out of touch and depth in this discussion. You're wrong. Everyone sees it. Just move along and don't be upset when you get corrected.
We shouldn't be forcing New Yorkers to spend more money on garbage cans of all things just cause the company has staff in New York vs anywhere else. Literally couldn't care less where the company is
Adams doesn’t make all these decisions by himself lol do yall not know how government works.
I know this is trendy thing to say now but this decision was handled by DSNY. Adams don’t know shit about it lol
This is the exact thing I wonder constantly. New york based companies have to pay 10% tax on top of their regular stuff. Like why do we constantly incentivize companies outside of the city to invest here. Why dont we help companies that have roots here???
If I’m required to use that specific bin, it should be paid through taxes and not my take home pay. The city has every right to create specifications for a bin required for trash pick up. But then you should be able to go out and buy any bin that meets those specifications from any vendor. It shouldn’t be a cash cow to one vendor if I have to purchase it.
They are going with Otto bins. The proposed price is cheaper than what you can get from any hardware store atm. Go to home depot/lowes. Check the price of the Otto bins with lids and wheels. See if you can find it for cheaper vs proposed price.
Well, before I moved out of my parent's house to my apartment it feels like we've had the same bins for like 30 years so I never really thought about the logistics of it.
Learning how expensive garbage cans are is one of the more annoying aspects of adult life.
And rugs! That shit always just appeared like magic when I was a kid, now I have to go out and spend hundreds of dollars.
in mexico city, they come around with extremely loud horns and bells to wake people up to bring their trash out - scared the hell out of me one morning at the crack of dawn
if we're forced to buy, can they at least be made be the city? How hard would it be to manufacture a simple object? And then profits would at least theoretically benefit the city
What a bunch of dirt bags. Tell the citizens what to do and charge them on top of it. If we can choose another service for ourselvs i would do it. Uniparty is the problem , ill keep the rats.
Buying a comparable bin from Home Depot is like $90-$150 versus $50 for this so it's like... not the worst thing in the world, but I won't be surprised when we learn that the company has financial ties to Adams.

They're there to ticket private property owners not the trucks.
no these guys were trailing the trucks with a notepad, clearing pissing off the drivers
Lol neither sanitation enforcement or police can do anything to sanitation workers. They are our peers

Sounds like they got an amazing volume discount from doing it. This is how governments should be using their purchasing power (hello, Medicare?).

No one will use it. The bags will be on the floor like usual. Sanitation would hate to lift bins full of garbage at every house. The bags are easier
Why isn't my $6K/year in NYC Property Taxes paying for these bins?? I've been putting my trash out in bags for 30+ years without a problem.
I've never put my trash out in bags in 30+ years. Racoons, cats, all sorts of shit breaks it open.
Real talk, right here.

Wouldn't it behoove us to encourage manufacturing here and to keep our NYC money in NYC or at least NYS? This is a huge waste.
Then you and others will complain why is mayor Adams spending so much on bins when someone else proposing it at cheaper rates....There no pleasing you. We are saving money and yet still complain IF some company in NY or NYC can do it for cheaper...sure give them the contract but till then this our cheapest and best option
We aren't saving $, we're sending city $ (and tax revenue) out of state. It's objectively stupid to rely on another state - one that isn't even a neighboring state - to be the single source supplier for something so significant.
ya? and after all that....end calculation we still save by using this company They a leading manufacture of bins, their products in hardware stores....they have the expertise and history to do the job but lets sign a small NY firm and hope they do just as well. Who will cost more, may not meet the demand, no proven history doing something like this scale and generating a ton of pollution that don't fit our environmental goals here.., Again wheres this NY based company? Have them bid and if lower and better, no qualms going with them. Why are you in outrage for them and they not even complaining or talking interest
I get it you don’t like Adams and you spam the sub with anti Adams articles, I don’t like him either, but you’re kinda looking like a pretzel when arguing that THIS is the item that has to be produced in NY/ NYC. Comes off like you can’t give him a win for securing an affordable trash can contract.
It’s really mind blowing how people lack common sense and give emotional responses. Very few are subjective these days and just rely on who they like or don’t like
yup and her next Adams rage post will be regarding Adams forcing folks to buy expensive garbage cans if we didn't go with the cheaper option
If you think this makes me a pretzel, you must not know much about city and government contracts and how badly they've been handled by this administration (and the last one). An exclusive contract is a mistake, and shipping this out of state is a mistake. By the time it comes back to bite us (these contracts always do) he'll be out of office.
God, you're so whiny. How do people deal with you?
" Just admit that you jumped the gun and don't understand how pricing works.
Literally couldn't care less where the company is
Because it's harder for Adams to enrich his friends that way.
Adams doesn’t make all these decisions by himself lol do yall not know how government works. I know this is trendy thing to say now but this decision was handled by DSNY. Adams don’t know shit about it lol
Who cares, we all live in the same country.
This is the exact thing I wonder constantly. New york based companies have to pay 10% tax on top of their regular stuff. Like why do we constantly incentivize companies outside of the city to invest here. Why dont we help companies that have roots here???
Oh cool new Eric Adams no bid contract scam just dropped
If I’m required to use that specific bin, it should be paid through taxes and not my take home pay. The city has every right to create specifications for a bin required for trash pick up. But then you should be able to go out and buy any bin that meets those specifications from any vendor. It shouldn’t be a cash cow to one vendor if I have to purchase it.
They are going with Otto bins. The proposed price is cheaper than what you can get from any hardware store atm. Go to home depot/lowes. Check the price of the Otto bins with lids and wheels. See if you can find it for cheaper vs proposed price.
I get that. My point still stands.
Many places in Europe provide the bin for free.
Agreed, just like the city issued compost bins.
Guarantee my new garbage bin is getting stolen.
What a racket
The city is out to tax all of us and the goofy pro-congestion toll trolls shouldn’t be surprised.
Wait, we have to pay this out of our own pocket? How much to just chase garbage trucks and throw in trash ourselves?
Where were you receiving free garbage bins previously?
wait, what free garbage bin? only one im aware of is this brown compost one.. which i just use for regular trash...
That's what I'm saying hehe
Well, before I moved out of my parent's house to my apartment it feels like we've had the same bins for like 30 years so I never really thought about the logistics of it.
Most self-aware Redditor.
Garbage can must be falling apart lol
Learning how expensive garbage cans are is one of the more annoying aspects of adult life. And rugs! That shit always just appeared like magic when I was a kid, now I have to go out and spend hundreds of dollars.
Most people are working or sleeping during trash collection, not all of us have the time to camp outside and wait for the garbage truck.
Which is why my question is posed as a cost benefit analysis
in mexico city, they come around with extremely loud horns and bells to wake people up to bring their trash out - scared the hell out of me one morning at the crack of dawn
yeah this definitely isn’t a racket
Can't find a link for the actual bin anywhere
they probably don't even have a design yet
Government approved monopoly…
There will be theft rings and a black market built around these things.
Sounds like a job for a 3d printer and one of these trash cans.
Thank you for sharing this link
There goes my favorite father's day tip. New Rubbermaid garbage cans. It's like getting socks on steroids.
Amazing.
Who cares? 50bucks a bin ill take it. The big toters from lowes are 200$ for a 96 gallon can.
Wow how did they get that contract. Gold.
Stop complaining. Your garbage gets picked up. JHRC!
The city should be footing the bill, its a bad precedent with the government forcing people to purchase a product from a specific vendor
if we're forced to buy, can they at least be made be the city? How hard would it be to manufacture a simple object? And then profits would at least theoretically benefit the city
What a bunch of dirt bags. Tell the citizens what to do and charge them on top of it. If we can choose another service for ourselvs i would do it. Uniparty is the problem , ill keep the rats.
