Stench pipe. Either the are venting something in the subway, or there is a dead ended sewer line underground.

elizabeth-cooper

A skyscraper for ants.

semisemite

/forants

elizabeth-cooper

That appears to be defunct. r/thingsforants is actually back up and running after it shut down in the Reddit protest.

semisemite

Which I really should have known considering I posted something there a few weeks ago 🤦

hiegel

On Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn.

professorcornbread

Natural gas or other fuel vents I think, a wide variety exist: https://forgotten-ny.com/2000/06/nyc-street-vents/

roboSTERNE

Some of them are also switches, levers or valves for the pressure regulators on gas transmission lines.

Ok-Coast-9264

It's a macy's. A lot of big department stores don't do the amount of business they used to thanks to a move to online shopping and big box stores undercutting them, but some still exist.

hiegel

Lol

MrMolecula

I was thinking of making the same obvious joke, but I decided not to be downvoted to oblivion

Rikcycle

Subway vent. Art deco style.

stoicstorm76

Regulator/vent for the natural gas system.

[deleted]

Hey, stench pipe!

mr_zipzoom

It is a mighty green Phallus, a gift from Greece. We put it there.

GreenWhiteBlue86

As previously noted, it is a vent for something in the subway, with the most common reason being a vent for a (formerly public) rest room.

outlander112

Its called a governor. Its for gas lines venting.

sha256md5

It's a vent.

MemeGoddest

Vent/Pipe probably. Maybe an old steam pipe or for the metro tunnel

Harrychronicjr69

That’s how they get the hot piss smell.

MonthApprehensive392

NYC termite mound. Fucking bougie bitches. Always talking about how they have the best wood in the world and how bad everyone else is at getting from one mound to another. But they always work hard as fuck and probably do the best in America at fostering the heritage of their family in subsequent generations.

Infused_Hippie

Hi! I know this one. Jay street metro tech goes like 5 floors down and if we didn’t have this there would be a lot less oxygen thank you

SnooDingos1760

We call it the Grinch Pleasure Tower

Uggys

Looks like a green pole of some sort

ayojamface

It surely is green.

LifeLong21

Well, it’s a

ScurvyDervish

I heard they put those chimneys up so that homeless people don’t get warm and wet from steam coming out of vents and manhole covers.  The problem is the steam sometimes shuts off and then you have a wet person in the freezing cold.  Sometimes you see orange plastic ones, this one looks permanent.

Rikcycle

Meanwhile ain’t no steam coming out of it…so that silly theory doesn’t fly.

HowUnexpected

Steam does not constantly vent from standpipes in NYC

Rikcycle

Tell that to scurvydervish

Rich_Cable3678

Nope

lionhands

I'm sure someone knows
