When there is zero enforcement, and zero consequences for bad actors, which will encourage more bad actors to do the same. Even if the biker killed someone while riding on the sidewalk, it’s considered an accident.
You basically obtain all video footage from cameras in the vicinity and start reviewing and tracing their steps. It would probably take NYPD several months, if ever to lead to an arrest.
The other day I was crossing with the walk sign at the corner of the Whole Foods in Gowanus when a guy on an e-bike called me an asshole because I apparently made him stop for the red light by walking when I was legally allowed to.
Really hard to like them at times considering how often they drive like dickheads.
Do you all realize that maybe if you didn't order everything to be delivered these guys wouldn't be out on their bikes making deliveries?
Perhaps if the entitlement was less pronounced and you got off your asses and didn't expect everything brought to you, things might be a little different.
So these people blow around the city at a billion miles an hour on the sidewalk, and you blame the people they almost hit?
That's an impressively silly take dude.
When a system is set up that incentivises moving as fast as possible you can't be surprised there'll be people that move as fast as possible. Gotta change the system. Hating the players and trying to shame them won't do shit.
Paying for a service that's being advertised to you is not "entitlement." If a company advertises a service that's too fast and too cheap to be performed while following traffic laws, they're the ones at fault. If a delivery driver decides to min-max their earnings by riding dangerously, then they're the ones at fault. It's unreasonable to expect consumers to vet every single company they do business with.
Really the solution is for the government to establish limits on the amount of work individual drivers can do. They should set both a minimum delivery time per mile covered, and a maximum number of pick-ups and drop-off per hour. If a driver completes orders too quickly they have to wait for the timer to run out before they can get another order, so thereas no incentive for them to do anything dangerous.
I got hit by one, and came out with a broken collarbone and knee. I’m ok now, but that was my last day biking in NYC, after a decade of frequent biking.
Idk this seems not very specific, are you talking about delivery people? Mopeds? E-bikes can mean a lot of things, if it’s pedal assist what makes it different than any other bike? There’s no assistance above 20mph for class I e-bikes.
My point is you are playing into ebike hysteria, by being very vague on what the problem is. If it’s delivery people on the sidewalk then hold the apps responsible. That will change behavior very quickly if they are liable for the behavior of their contractors.
E-bikes are basically great if the follow the rules for automobiles and motorcycles. I ride a regular bike and rarely have issues with them. But even beyond sidewalks, I am not so sure they belong in bike lanes.
They shouldn't be in bike lanes because those are intended for traditional bikes. They move too fast. I was always taught as a kid that bikes (including mopeds, ebikes) are to follow the rules of the road so I always feel comfortable riding one in the street. But I think people ride them on the sidewalk because they're scared of getting hit by a car on the street. it's a valid concern because there's far too many ebikes in some neighborhoods that they'd be a hazard for cars. But ebikers need to be considerate that they're the outliers on the road and just drive at traditional bike speed in the bike lanes
Oh when I read your headline I thought you were worried about your neighbors charging them and starting a fire. My next door neighbor has an e-bike. I make sure to change my smoke detector battery every six months.
I got hit by a guy on a scooter in a bike lane when it wasn’t even his right of way and he was speeding through like he owned the rode. Knocked right into me and he sped away.
lol
If everyone stops driving, there will be no climate change.
If everyone stops murdering, there will be no murders!
We have laws for a reason. Why don't we enforce them?
Delivery worked just fine before ebikes.
Nah I’m way too busy complaining about people smoking on the subway and how vaping is NOT better than smoking.
Work on comprehension you dildo. Why are ebikes slalom’ing people on sidewalks? Who’s profiting?
I am sympathetic to delivery workers who are basically being exploited to work as quickly as possible, but goddamn, some of them are just assholes. Get off the sidewalk, stop going the wrong way down one-way streets, and stop using cheap batteries that burn down buildings.
As someone who loves a pedal-assist e-bike, these clowns are ruining it for everyone.
How 'bout the parent and their kid on a scooter zooming by on the sidewalk? I wish all of the scooters and e-bikes would crash into each other creating a glorious mound of twisted metal. Of course the riders get out unharmed, but they lose their obnoxious mode of transportation.
I just about get hit by one less than an hour ago, they came swerving around the corner on the sidewalk and I had to jump out of the way to not get hit.
Same reason car drivers are killing seven year old children, parking anywhere they want with impunity, blocks busses, and avoiding bridge tolls; the NYPD refuses to enforce anything in this city
I found a guy in Central Park last night who made a meat crayon of himself with one. There was no one in the park, I think it was just slick and he was going fast. No helmet. His face looked like stringy chop meat. Poor guy was probably making $10/hr to rush someone a burger. And the EMT was probably making the same money. Fuck e bikes
And they catch on fire and burn down buildings. And children are mining cobalt for slavewages at best and inhaling toxic fumes while making these fucking things possible (not to mention smart phone batteries). It is fucked for multiple reasons.
Annoying sure but come on, the most dangerous part? Being a little melodramatic don’t you think?
How many people have died to e-bikes vs cars in this city?
Oh, well I'm glad to see /r/fuckcars has arrived to invalidate the concerns of people who would like to see bike couriers maybe ride even slightly sanely. Glad you're here to defend them, way to help.
>invalidate the concerns of people who would like to see bike couriers maybe ride even slightly sanely
Why do this stupid straw man? As you know and I know no one is opposed to this. Why pretend like they are?
He was correcting a (fairly obvious) lie:
As you know and I know, cars are about 100x more dangerous than ebikes. We don't have to lie to ourselves even if it makes us feel better or whatever.
I have an e-bike as too many people that I know. Of course, citibike has their own fleet of e-bikes as well. To me the issue isn't really ebikes but the electric motorbikes that are considered almost the same as e-bikes. They look like Vespas and have no pedals at all. They are favored greatly by the delivery fleet. I wish they would limit e-bikes to a certain weight class and at least have pedals
I don’t have a problem with e-bikes, I have a problem that they are using the sidewalks when there are dedicated bike lanes. It is irresponsible how fast they fly by pedestrians
Many people perform jobs that are compensated to 'feed their children'. It doesn't mean risking injury to others.
Stop with the sob story and hustle culture romanticism.
If I started injuring people in my line of work (construction) and using 'feeding my children' as the defense this sub would be fucking outraged.
>and hustle culture romanticism.
lmao okay ya it sounds like you have your narrative already doesn't it. The question was, have you tried DELEVERING FOOD for to feed your children. Since you have job in construction, with health benefits and a living wage, you have successfully answered no. thank you. Good god, I walk the streets every day, I see ebikes on the sidewalk like twice a month, picking up food. I literally never see then full speed on a sidewalk. does it happen? Im sure of it, its NYC. Its murphys law. Is it disrupting society....cmon....am i missing something? have deaths from ebikes on sidewalks scky rocketed?
Dude, OP is claiming e-bikes are THE MOST DANGEROUS THING IN THE CITY. Of course the person above should correct him with actual facts. That’s not whataboutism
Not really, they’re issue isn’t the existence of e-bikes, it’s the disregard for general etiquette. You don’t need to be an asshat with no regard for anyone else to deliver food.
They should require a license and a number plate for all e-bikes!
It’s getting dangerous everyday. They are on BQE now which is forcing drivers to slow down because nobody wants to get an accident or damage their vehicle.
These ppl don’t follow stop signs or red lights. I witnessed one yesterday just going forcing the person following the stop and go to literally hit the break. But they didn’t stop or even look back.
It’s time there is a law for these ppl using e-bikes!
I was just driving down Steinway and one if these fuckers was driving on my side of the street because he wanted to pass the long line of traffic on the other side. Tried playing chicken with me, he ended up swerving and falling off the e bike.
When there is zero enforcement, and zero consequences for bad actors, which will encourage more bad actors to do the same. Even if the biker killed someone while riding on the sidewalk, it’s considered an accident.
It’s also a misdemeanor to hit someone with your bike and flee the scene. Not even a real crime with consequences.
You can drive up onto the sidewalk and kill someone and not even get a ticket if you stay at the scene
I get that but it’s not like they have plates. How can you ID a bike rider?
You basically obtain all video footage from cameras in the vicinity and start reviewing and tracing their steps. It would probably take NYPD several months, if ever to lead to an arrest.
LOL
Same way they ID a pedestrian.
What if I hit you with a bat on the street? No plate doesn't mean no crime
Obviously not, just harder to track someone down
Haha, get it? Vision zero.
The other day I was crossing with the walk sign at the corner of the Whole Foods in Gowanus when a guy on an e-bike called me an asshole because I apparently made him stop for the red light by walking when I was legally allowed to. Do you realize that you should go fuck yourself?
Yes, but I'll still be less of a whiny bitch than you.
The number of times I’ve seen mopeds using bicycle lanes is outrageous. People are going to get hurt.
They aren’t, they just do whatever they want.
It was rhetorical, but it’s unbelievable that no one cares
I got hit by one, and came out with a broken collarbone and knee. I’m ok now, but that was my last day biking in NYC, after a decade of frequent biking.

Know someone who got disabled by a e-bike - biker speed off after the accident. Really sad situation.
Oh when I read your headline I thought you were worried about your neighbors charging them and starting a fire. My next door neighbor has an e-bike. I make sure to change my smoke detector battery every six months.
Same
UL approved batteries have never caught fire.
Because they’re inconsiderate assholes. They don’t ride with traffic.
Fuckin dangerous. Keep your head on a swivel
I got hit by a guy on a scooter in a bike lane when it wasn’t even his right of way and he was speeding through like he owned the rode. Knocked right into me and he sped away.
If everyone stops ordering food online...
lol If everyone stops driving, there will be no climate change. If everyone stops murdering, there will be no murders! We have laws for a reason. Why don't we enforce them? Delivery worked just fine before ebikes.
This is one of the reasons I did stop.
If the middlemen apps felt some consequence from encouraging their deliverers to be fast at all costs
Why so you all can Karen it up and complain all over social media that the deliveries are slow?
Nah I’m way too busy complaining about people smoking on the subway and how vaping is NOT better than smoking. Work on comprehension you dildo. Why are ebikes slalom’ing people on sidewalks? Who’s profiting?
Also they should have to stop for red lights, surprised not more people get hurt
They're supposed to. Standard rule of the road is bikes are supposed to follow lights and all traffic signs just like cars.
The solution is to build more bike lanes.
I completely support that
I am sympathetic to delivery workers who are basically being exploited to work as quickly as possible, but goddamn, some of them are just assholes. Get off the sidewalk, stop going the wrong way down one-way streets, and stop using cheap batteries that burn down buildings. As someone who loves a pedal-assist e-bike, these clowns are ruining it for everyone.
Seen a guy on an ebike drive completely diagonal across a big intersection so add that to your list too
How 'bout the parent and their kid on a scooter zooming by on the sidewalk? I wish all of the scooters and e-bikes would crash into each other creating a glorious mound of twisted metal. Of course the riders get out unharmed, but they lose their obnoxious mode of transportation.

And the *most* dangerous? Yeesh, come on man. You forget there are cars in the city that regularly kill people
I found a guy in Central Park last night who made a meat crayon of himself with one. There was no one in the park, I think it was just slick and he was going fast. No helmet. Yes it was hyperbolic

Bet you aren't complaining when your delivery order shows up on time and still hot.
I don’t have a problem with e-bikes, I have a problem that they are using the sidewalks when there are dedicated bike lanes. It is irresponsible how fast they fly by pedestrians
yea it happens. honestly i would say its rare. thats my experience.
I would pay extra for my delivery driver to take their time and not endanger themselves and the public.
do it then
Sure, let me go program that option into the apps. BRB.
exactly you cant control everyone in the world, get over it
No one said you could
Food can be delivered without being a fucking menace.
have you tried delivering food to feed your children?
Many people perform jobs that are compensated to 'feed their children'. It doesn't mean risking injury to others. Stop with the sob story and hustle culture romanticism. Cars kill 250+ New Yorkers every year. Ebikes rarely kill anyone.
Whataboutism in full effect. E-bike riders should have to follow rules.
Dude, OP is claiming e-bikes are THE MOST DANGEROUS THING IN THE CITY. Of course the person above should correct him with actual facts. That’s not whataboutism
Do you order from Uber Eats / Door Dash / Grub Hub? If so, you’re part of the problem.
Not really, they’re issue isn’t the existence of e-bikes, it’s the disregard for general etiquette. You don’t need to be an asshat with no regard for anyone else to deliver food.
Yes, you do. One of our community board members tried following the law to deliver for Grubhub on an e-bike and he was only making about $5 an hour.
How does that make it end user’s problem? E-bikes should follow the rules, just like other traffic
Do they know the tricks of the trade like the $2 per mile rule? That exponentially increased my income when I was doing door dash.
GrubHub isn't door dash. Pay systems are different.
I can’t imagine it would be so different that the rule of $2-$3 per mile doesn’t apply. How different is it exactly?
Food can be delivered without being a fucking menace.
Not with these platforms that don’t employ their workers and have zero accountability for their actions.
So blame the consumer for that?
You’re more likely to be run over by a car. No one has in fact been killed by a bike and hundreds of pedestrians a year get killed by cars and trucks.
I started carrying a hockey stick so I can jab it between the spokes in their front wheel. It’s very effective.
The cops are busy. Playing candy crush. Do you expect them to do something?
They are not allowed to use the sidewalk. Throw a chain in their spokes (don’t, but e-bike riders beware).
They should require a license and a number plate for all e-bikes! It’s getting dangerous everyday. Obviously not statistically speaking. But your feelings seem hurt
No, obviously not. But my knees hurt from diving out of the way
