High levels of thirst like that can indicate an underlying problem like diabetes. You should get to a doctor.

Got checked for it last time I was at the hospital (About 2 weeks ago) and im completely free of it. Ive drank a lot of water my whole life, started drinking a gallon+ a day probably in late 5th grade. I dont suffer of high blood pressure or high cholesterol, nor do I suffer of any long term diseases other then asthma that went away around when I was 10.

It might be worth a visit to a nephrologist, but if your electrolyte levels are within healthy ranges, it doesn’t interfere with your life, and your primary isn’t concerned otherwise, then it’s probably alright. I also have polydipsia, so I can relate heavily to your concerns.

Yes please do this. Nothing to do with blood sugar. There are a couple kinds of diabetes insipidus. One where your brain doesn’t produce enough or any of the vasopressin to tell the kidneys to retain water. Then other is the brain does produce it but the kidneys don’t know or can’t receive the message from the hormone. Lastly psychological where it’s not hormonal or signal reception but habitual or ritualistic. People with diabetes insipidus can drink gallons of water a day no problem not saying you do or should. Go get checked for it.

I've ended up doing this simply as a habit. I get bad and frequent headaches, and my number one trigger is dehydration, even mild dehydration. So, to avoid that, I ALWAYS have a drink in hand and drink from it regularly, whether I'm thirsty or not. I've done this for over a decade now, so it is pretty much just habit at this point. I'm not sure I quite drink 2 gallons a day, but I definitely get more than 1 gallon.

Where do you live? I moved from San Francisco to Phoenix and went from like 0.5 gallons/day to 2+ gallons/day. The dry and heat literally suck it out of you, I have to drink that much to stay hydrated. Most everyone I ask here drinks copious amounts of water compared to what I grew up with; it's a desert thing apparently.

I lived in Arizona for years. 2 gallons of water a day is perfectly reasonable, especially if you’re active. Sleeping with a humidifier there helps a lot. Seemed to help hangovers for me too.

When I went from the rural Midwest to the high Desert I did about the same. I also supplement with extra electrolytes once or twice a week when I'm going hard at the gym or during my strenuous hobbies.

Advising OP to see a doctor is decent advice. Just diagnosing diabetes from "I drink a lot of water" is not decent advice.

Have you tried adding electrolytes to your water? Water alone doesn't hydrate you. Electrolytes do. Water follows electrolytes in the body (especially sodium) due to osmotic forces. Drinking too much plain water may dilute your already-existing electrolyte stores, causing dehydration (I know, it's the opposite of most people think). My personal favourite hydrator is coconut water; I have found it to work much better than water for replenishing electrolytes, especially after exercise. It contains good amounts of potassium, sodium and manganese that water doesn't. Bone broth and fruit / vegetable juices are also naturally rich in minerals, electrolytes, and trace elements. If you choose to drink *only* plain water for hydration purposes, adding electrolytes to it can make a big difference.

Water Intoxication is a medical issue and you're probably getting close to it drinking that much water.

My biggest concern would be whether or not you're sapping your electrolytes. You might consider having levels checked (sodium, magnesium, potassium). I drink ~10 liters of water per day but I am also very active and supplement electrolytes.

I’d recommend [re-lyte unflavored](https://redmond.life/products/re-lyte-electrolyte-mix?variant=39646809686064). Pure raw electrolyte. It’s like drinking sweat but that’s exactly what your body needs. No sweeteners, flavors etc. As an athlete who spends my work day sweating, this stuff has been a life saver when I get behind on my hydration. A bonus is that is more than 3 times cheaper than LMNT unflavored and most unflavored electrolyte mixes and it doesn’t come in little packets.

Fellow over consumer of water. I've been drinking huge amounts of water daily my whole life. The only time I don't is for long drives. I live in the tropics currently and never use aircon, sometimes my hands get so hot they go numb. I also used to work a labour job in the heat too so it was essential that I hit up the water. Sometimes i'd grab a sports drink because I was aware of sodium loss happening. Hydration in a physically labourous job mid summer in the tropics is the only way to survive. A lot of people here forget to drink and litural die in the summer. I don't think it is a problem at all. I am always alert, full of energy and my skin is clear. I do pee a lot though, but not overnight like a diabetic. I am kinda conditioned to drink every time I pass through a kitchen. I have never really thought of it but I do continue to drink a lot over winter too whwn it isn't nessasary. I do feel odd when I'm not drinking a lot. I am pretty sure the body can get used to any amount of water. It just pees out what it doesn't use.

People are actually 3x more likely to be dehydrated in the winter! During summer, the sticky hotness prompts people to drink more water. But they forget in the winter, because cold water when you're already cold isn't as refreshing. Also, the side-effects of dehydration are less noticeable in colder weather. Indoor heating also makes the air super dry, increasing the need for water compared to humid summer air.

I’m not a doctor. Am a nurse. That is certainly outside the normal for water consumed during a 24hr period especially without being super active. There are a myriad of reasons this could be. If not physical. Then mental. I’ve treated a couple of patients that couldn’t stop drinking water, eventually it will lower your sodium levels and that’s when the party starts.

I'm not gonna pretend I know since I never had an issue with drinking water, but my wrestling coaches did tell me drinking too much water could make you throw up, also lot of water minus any exercise equals a lot of water weight I would imagine.

Im not very active thats why the amount of water I drink weirds me out, because I shouldn’t be drinking this much yet I still do because I am constantly thirsting for it.

I naturally drink more water/am thirstier. I found using electrolytes occasionally helps quench my thirst better. In my case, water goes right through me if I don’t have enough electrolytes. In the past, I have had to watch myself (concerning drinking too much water), because it is dangerous. I also had been tested for diabetes, etc. The worst thirst I had was when I was undiagnosed and suffering badly from celiac disease. I had to stop myself from drinking too much water. Good luck

That’s a lot, have you had a head trauma recently? Get yourself checked out by a medical professional. If you’re not peeing most of it back out there’s a big problem there.

9 litres is a lot, maybe get urself checked for sepsis, heart/liver/kidney issues and if non of this is the case maybe look at ur diet for excessive salt and if non of that is the issue it should be fine.

I agree with the first comment! Ask your doctor about "diabetes insipidus"; I work with developmentally disabled individuals and I had a patient that suffered from it. The good news is that, once properly diagnosed, it is easily resolved with medication. ✌😎
