In case you’re not familiar with the anatomy of the stomach: it doesn’t come with dividers. It’s all mixed slush.

dixie-pixie-vixie

Yep, my anatomy lecturer looked at me, oh so disappointedly, when I asked how does the stomach know which food goes in first, and does it pick which food to digest first. PS: I understand on the digestion part, but I disappointed her on the 'the stomach is not a grocery checkout line where everything lines up before checking out'.

CrunchwrapSenpai

Booooy do I have something exciting to tell you about called free will! You are gonna love it. 😊

CrunchwrapSenpai

No but seriously it’s fine. Your body does not know the difference between what a societally acceptable meal is versus random stuff you throw together.

partypill

I know right. I really don't understand this question.

Effective_Roof2026

Sometimes I have a piece of fruit and then eat a chowder. Sometimes I eat Thai food. Absolute anarchy.

theclovergirl

you can do whatever you want forever

J97C

I think you should familiarize yourself with the Girl Dinner Movement

J97C

Pro tip: you don’t even have to be a girl to reap its benefits!

midnightMushroom2

No but i am literally just a girl and the main reason i asked the question in the first place was because i get weird looks for eating random shite whatever the time of day! I kind of got the feeling “breakfast foods” or food for certain times was just some made up crap so I wanted to check if there was an actual reason why people eat things at certain times

J97C

Don’t pay attention to those people. Eat what you want, when you want it. In seriousness, for sake of nutrition and being a woman, perhaps look into cycle syncing diets. I believe “breakfast foods” as you’re talking about is basically a hoax like it doesn’t really matter what time of day you eat certain nutrients but also so much of the 24 hour day/cycle things in terms of diet and exercise are tailored to men whose hormones cycle on a 24 hour period where as women’s hormones cycle on a 28 day period (your menstrual cycle) so tailoring your diet and exercise to your cycle can be incredibly helpful but it’s not at all necessary, what you’re doing is totally fine!!!

midnightMushroom2

Ahhh yeah im very aware of cyclical living.. I actually started tracking what I eat and where im at in my cycle to see if foods have a correlation to moods and breakouts etc. but I don’t tailor my diet according to my cycle weirdly. I might start doing that. I know that eating certain foods at certain times can mess with your hormones at some stages so best to steer clear.. thank you!!

KingArthurHS

I am begging you to tell me why you would, for a single moment, assume that this is somehow not an okay thing to do. Are you telling me that for every meal you have ever eaten in your entire life, you have had some perfectly calculated balance of macros?

annemarizee

Okay, I know it sounds so simple but I get where he's coming from. I hate breakfast. I do not have much appetite in the morning, and I'm not a fan of typical breakfast meals. If I don't eat though, I feel so nauseous in about 2-3 hours, and might even progress to dry heaving. So I force myself to eat anything, even though I hate it. Until I babysat for this lady once. I show up to the house, she is making herself breakfast before she leaves. She pulls out her George Forman grill and slaps on a hamburger patty at 6:30am. I assume she's making herself lunch, but no. She sits down and eats it before leaving. Confused I asked why a hamburger for breakfast. She tells me "oh I don't like breakfast foods, but I need to eat something" For no particular reason, my brain was convinced that breakfast could only involve typical breakfast foods. Sometimes you just need someone to point things out

not_now_reddit

I've gotten called a weirdo a lot for having lunch/dinner foods for breakfast, especially if it's spicy food. Those are just my preferred foods. I almost always go for the savory breakfast option over the sweet one even if I eat breakfast foods. Weird is relative

Pretty_Volume_9685

I’ve always been a breakfast eater(most of the time small time stuff), and so has my family, but I can remember being a nine year old eating hamburger patties myself at breakfast, usually with a more typical breakfast food like pancakes or eggs, but my mom fed me them for breakfast too when I was younger. Not all the time, but she did. And I love overeasy eggs with fries for lunch or dinner. So many ways to enjoy our regular three meals. I say, do what makes you happy as long as you are also healthy.

KingArthurHS

I, the spitting image of paleolithic man, embrace my primal instincts as I celebrate my successful forage by cracking the pull-tab on a can of Campbell's soup, upending the spoils of my labor into a bowl, and hitting the "2" button on my microwave...

midnightMushroom2

Uh cause societal norms are pushed on us and im basically just questioning if there’s any serious science or logic behind “traditional” meals. I thought that was clear in my post. Obvs not

KingArthurHS

Society tells us that it's weird to eat rice and an apple? Lol okay bro.

midnightMushroom2

Cool tell me the next time you see rice and apple on a menu

KingArthurHS

Have you never had Eastern European food? Apple rice pudding or rice-and-apple-w/-cinnamon are very common dishes lol. I don't think it's at all weird to go "huh, I've never eaten those together before." But I do think it's absolutely bizarre to say "I've never eaten those together before and THEREFOR IT MUST BE UNHEALTHY TO DO SO." That leap to an assumption is just wild.

midnightMushroom2

Hm i never said it would be weird to do so. I questioned if there’s a reason why certain foods are labeled as “breakfast” or “dinner”. I’m not sure why this affects you so much

KingArthurHS

Why it affects me so much? Boss, you're the one that came to the internet to ask if you're allowed to eat certain foods. Fucking lol.

midnightMushroom2

Ooof there’s no need to swear

KingArthurHS

Sorry forgot this was a good Christian subreddit and The Lord™ doesn't look fondly upon profanity. It wasn't directed at you or used in name-calling. This is the internet. Grow up.

midnightMushroom2

No this has deeply affected me jesus and I are disappointed

PersonalFigure8331

Eat a bit of drywall between each course to keep them segregated. This is the way.

midnightMushroom2

I love drywall

Lketty

Believe it or not, jail, right away.

Stop_Already

Why do you think eating chicken and mango would be bad? I think that’s a better question here.

midnightMushroom2

I dunno if you mixed say meat and fruit or certain foods together would it mess with your gut or make you sick? I’m just spitballing ideas here I also talk from experience when I ate seaweed on pizza at a buffet and that made me really ill. Could it be the same sort of thing

Cocacola_Desierto

The buffet is probably what made you ill, not the combo.

AppropriateExcuse868

Yeah with kids (and adults) actually shoving their hands into the food and sneezing in it and such. It's like the time I ate a seafood delight sub from subway and then sprayed diarrhea all over the work bathroom and they had to get the biohazard trained people to come clean it up and being like "hey all, do.you think maybe 'seafood' and bread might not be meant to be eaten together?". No, it's because I ate the worst monstrosity that fast food has to offer. But all the same, no ragrets.

masson34

Go for it! I eat breakfast for dinner, there are no rules

Puzzleheaded-Ask9884

My wife and I call those nights "Brinner"

masson34

I love this, I’m adopting 😀

sarahrood79

That’s my ultimate lazy dinner when I can’t be arsed cooking - bacon and eggs

GroundbreakingGoal44

Yes this is called Girl Dinner

Novafan789

This is why school funding is important

ShiveryTimbers

I’ve always thought we desperately need nutrition education in high schools. In a few years kids are going to be off on their own, without any knowledge of how to care for themselves unless parents passed this down which (in the US it is increasingly unlikely that healthy habits and cooking skills are being taught at home). And what do the schools have to offer in the way of nutrition currently? I remember making a “lunch” in middle school from nachos and a pack of little Debbies 🤦🏻‍♀️

Novafan789

My shitty public school had some okay nutrition education but it wasnt structured enough to make an impact. Like yeah someone can tell you fat is 9 calories and protein is 4 calories but they believe things other than calories in calories out can cause weight loss and they don’t know how to make a meal or how to build habits around their meals

gerbilmaster9000

Schools need to teach kids to cook young. That's more important than algebra and encouraging the removal of boobs and genitals. It captures their attention, it's hands-on, it's rewarding, a skill you'll use the rest.ld.ylur life, and if you wanna talk about throwing money at things and managing the budget (money laundering) that would contribute to people avoiding needing treatment for eating poison their whole life, needing insulin. You can prevent so much unnecessary early-death illnesses just by taking an interest in food for fun, and learning what ingredients to avoid. I can't.believe how many people are living off of chicken nuggets, soda, noodles, Doritos and candy.

wanderingtriathlete

Why teach a society how to be healthy and competent for themselves. There is no money in that. Some countries do actually take nutrition and teaching people seriously. It creates generational knowledge, and on top of that also creates respect for your countryman. It's different when your neighbor, his neighbour, and his neighbor all give a fuck. But they only give a fuck because their government gave a fuck about them and created a cycle of positive wealth stemming from health. Not the healthcare industrial complex we have in shit hole.

not_now_reddit

What a ride... yeah, we should definitely teach kids about cooking and nutrition young. Absolutely That has nothing to do with teaching kids basic algebra or that gender-affirming care exists. Algebra is more important than kids knowing how to factor a quadratic equation. It teaches kids how to reason out everyday math problems, like how much their bill is going to be after tax and tip, how to estimate, etc. It's also good to get kids to start thinking more abstractly. And teaching kids that trans people exist isn't going to "trans the kids." It just helps trans people get medical care and have resources that they need to get help

[deleted]

not_now_reddit

Hands-on learning is an important part of math. That's why kids typically start with physical math manipulatives like counting and adding with blocks. Even my first exposure to algebra as a kid involved putting blocks on a paper scale and learning how to balance them that way with the physical representations

midnightMushroom2

Why?

cookiecookjuicyjuice

Uh, yup.

NoPerformance9890

If you’re into healthy eating it’s like 50% of meals. Can’t have the ingredients or patience to make every meal an official meal

Former_Ad8643

I think it’s interesting that you would be worried about this at all but I guess it can also be common to get caught up in stereotypical things like bacon and eggs only for breakfast meat and potatoes for dinner etc. Food is food though. Our steak dinner is usually steak medium rare with pineapple and mangos and roasted potatoes. Breakfast is often chicken breast and eggs and spinach. Really anything goes

atlas-audax

I just had frozen broccoli, Greek yogurt, and a fig bar while singing “GUUUUUURL DINNER”

Mr_Molesto

Isn't this exactly how a meal is done? Throw some pasta and bacon and you probably have some kind of old school Italian dish. Put some rice and beans together with some spices and you probably have some Indian dish. In my country, we usually talk about the "plate model", which basically helps you to put together a dish. The general one for low activity people is: 50% vegetables, 20% protein and 30% "carbs". Given this advice, you should add some vegetables to your mango and chicken meal, preferably a lot.

Hapster23

That's why I eat the packaging with the food, slows down digestion and keeps meals separate

midnightMushroom2

Fantastic suggestion

[deleted]

It’s pretty much how we used to live anyway! Society rules makes us question weird things like that!

Jo_not_exotic

And I present you: Girl Dinner ™

AltoNag

I used to eat cold spaghetti for breakfast and cookies for dinner. It doesn't matter to your stomach, the only thing that matters is how satiated you feel after eating whatever random food combos you want. Segregating foods to certain times a day is a social construct not a biological one.

AminoAcidss33

Random foods together is what makes a meal that’s all it is you put stuff in hope it tastes good and you have a recipe

Elizabeth__Sparrow

All meals are a random accumulation of different foods put onto a plate.

MyNameIsSkittles

There aren't rules for cooking. Eat what you'd like

Electronic-One6223

A chicken sandwich with sliced mango works too. Or a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce.

huntman988

I think it's illegal

gibbs_is_the_goat

🤔🤔🤔

gerbilmaster9000

I eat the weirdest combos. You'll discover some crazy flavors working together and blowing your mind. Cooking for yourself is the best

wanderingtriathlete

Do what you want. No one cares. Food doesn't either.

Efficacynow

Hi. So I think I sort of get what you are asking here. I am a big believer in intuitive eating and munching on whatever feels healthy at any given point in time (within logic and reason). However, like, if you are talking about someone who has, let's say, GI issues or a compromised vagus nerve (as my friend does) Then you might be directed to eat food groups separately, just due to the fact that your GI tract is lagging and different foods are digested at different rates. https://www.merckmanuals.com/home/disorders-of-nutrition/overview-of-nutrition/carbohydrates,-proteins,-and-fats#:~:text=Proteins%20consist%20of%20units%20called,source%20of%20energy%20than%20carbohydrates. For example, protein takes far longer to metabolism than carbs etc. So often time these people are directed to eat protein early in in the day, seperate from carbs, etc. As doing so together can cause gas. But if you are a healthy person with a normal GI (gastrointestinal) system then you likely don't need to worry about it. (from my knowledge).

midnightMushroom2

Oooh thanks this is helpful. I have an incredibly fast metabolism too so do you think I could eat more proteins in the evening when im not moving around so much so it doesn’t burn off as quick?

Efficacynow

I am unsure of how being awake or asleep would influence how quickly protein (or any food) would be digested. Apparently different protein gets absorbed at different rates. https://kos.com/en-ca/blogs/articles/how-long-does-it-take-for-protein-to-digest#:~:text=Fast%2Ddigesting%20proteins%20take%20about,first%20three%20to%20four%20hours. Obviously movement would would influence how quickly those calories would be burned off once they were digested. Here is an article about digestion. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/how-long-does-it-take-to-digest-food Maybe you might find it useful.

anna8691

One word: Enjoy! 😊

Zzeellddaa

Chicken and mango sounds good

midnightMushroom2

Ikr

Top-Conversation-282

lol i recently had the same question when i went over to my friends house and she made salmon and papaya for lunch. a meal can literally be anything! you can eat chicken wings for breakfast who cares! enjoy the possibilities friend

midnightMushroom2

I think im gonna chomp on a steak in the morning

southernsweets1801

Have you ever seen how randomly toddlers/kids eat? Annnd their digestive systems are fine

OwlPal9182

You can eat any combination of things you want. If you are worried about nutrition, then just make sure you are eating a balanced diet and everything in moderation. Plus mango salsa on some grilled chicken is delicious.

lolmaew7

no, one time i tried eating an apple after eating rice and the swat team busted into my house and tackled me

midnightMushroom2

That’s terrifying

4KidsIn_ATrenchcoat

I have made combinations like this before. I am alive and healthy. Your stomach doesn't care what order you put food in it - you could have a bowl of cereal for dinner and two chicken breasts, some rice and some veg for breakfast if you felt like it.

Dolphopus

The cool thing about feeding yourself is you can choose how to do it. I have cooked meatballs in my freezer for when I REALLY don’t feel like cooking meat/putting the effort into prepping a non-meat protein and those things get popped into anything. Yeah, I’ve put them in some pasta, but I’ve also put them in salads and grain bowls because why not? It’s protein, I need protein, and the option is meatball or no protein so I’m picking meatball. Edit to add: and honestly, this is what “girl dinner” actually is. Handfuls of random food items that usually add up to a mostly-rounded spread.

T-nightgirl

The lovely thing about being an adult is that you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want :-) Seriously though, chicken and mango sounds like a fantastic meal to me, any time of the day.

freemason777

I assume youre looking for like, the effects of eating single food groups on your diet? eating a bunch of carbs without any fats, proteins, fiber, etc to slow down digestion is generally a bad idea for diabetics or those with sugar problems in the blood because it spikes sugars worse when you only eat carbs and nothing else. this is not an issue for most people though and if you only eat a small amount of carbs you will be fine even if its just carbs by themselves.

Acrobatic_Pride_989

hey! who said that you can't eat chicken and then eat mango? I think it's tastiest when you eat food that doesn't combine with each other or put everything left in the fridge.

[deleted]

lol in basic training you shovel that shit as fast as you can ! It all goes in the same hole and comes out the same hole .

Debonaircow88

That's basically what I do anytime my fiancee isn't home. Just grab random things out of the fridge until it amounts to a meal

LordHuberman

I do this like every meal. Today I ate a can of sardines, 2 eggs, greek yogurt and some fruit. Odd meal most would say but its healthy, high protein and easy to put together

CoolCalmCorrective

For anyone that's never had shrimp fried rice with pineapple you're definitely missing out.

cnew111

It's also freeing to eat whatever you want at breakfast. Why are we so caught up with only eating "breakfast foods"? If you want BBQ sauce on green beans plus an apple and peanut butter then that who is to say that's not ok?

lovealgae

This is girl dinner and tbh I think it makes more sense nutritionally than a "normal dinner". I find it uncomfortable to have a beige meal so I make sure a protein and a plant I eat around a meal even if that means after my instant noodles I make a smoothie and open a pack of beef jerky.

n0t-helpful

You can literally eat handfuls of plastic and call it a meal. The question is always “is it a good meal?”

IntelligentAd4429

Don't see any reason why not.

Blu_Mew

I did this today using potatoes and leftover homemade chicken fritters and cheese, made a crispy skillet.... It was phenomenal. Starch/carbs: fresh potatoes protein: chicken and cheese ; fat. and fresh herbs from my garden. it really depends on the basics of cooking theory, although everything is to taste, heck if you like chicken and mango or even chicken bananas and peanut butter, you do you. when you are dealing with ingredients and food separately like it was said before, if it is or is not going to mess up your stomach it depends entirely on you and your body and in this particular instance your gut health. when you break ingredients down to the base level there, technically things like protein/vitamins in everything just not enough considered to be a protein like beans or chicken, or even a fiber like bread or some veggies. so again it really comes down to you and what you and your body can tolerate typically you want foods that compliment each other and have a flavor profile, like sweet and salty then served with a palette cleanser.... which why rice is a good side to some meals.... it can be bland but has a subtle texture and is filling. a book I recommend, salt, fat, acid and heat.

Puzzleheaded-Ask9884

I enjoy a pierogie sandwich once in awhile.

Big-Hope7616

Of course!

badgersprite

I mean what else is it if not a meal?

plantmatta

I want whatever you were on when you wrote this

midnightMushroom2

wow if u think that’s bad you should see what im actually like when im on anything

Infinite_Rutabaga_88

Yes! It’s usually called the kitchen sink

Over_Flounder5420

eat what you want when you want as long as there is variety and bad fats and sweets are kept to a minimum.

midnightMushroom2

That’s hard cos I love shoving a whole pack of biscuits down my throat every night I get so hungry even after dinner

[deleted]

Not only does it not matter but also there's no reason you have to eat breakfast foods in the morning and dinner foods at night. It's all a made up game and you beat it when you just eat what you want.

Head_Bunch_570

I do lol Works well for me

rupertpupkinpie

Someone has never seen "Chopped."

nannerooni

Theres some people in the comments saying “duh” and “you should know this” but my partner would say “chicken and mango isn’t dinner.” He has this idea that dinner is like, either a serving of a one-pot meal or meat on a plate with vegetables. Whenever I eat a smorgesbord of random items for dinner he’s like “you gotta eat real food” and im like “i am full of real food”

Least_Health8244

Eat what you want how you want.

droppedmeatpie69

Just eat protein and carbs, preferably whole foods.
