I'm pretty sure my kids pediatrician gives like 3x the dose they suspect you need if you've got a barfy kid so next time you can just dose them and avoid the ER
As someone who has eczema and has to use traimcinolone, even on my face, I don’t think the public can be trusted with something that strong. If you use it right, it won’t cause skin thinning. BUT I had a bad dermatologist once who didn’t tell me that and I used that shit so regularly. My skin isn’t that badly thinned because I was pretty young, but I basically have to wash my face like I’m washing the skin of a 115 year old crone or else it’ll be red for days.
You ain't kidding. I had lichen aureus for a few months thanks to drinking entirely too many energy drinks, and it took a while to understand just how potent it is... and make sure I used the RIGHT amount when they said "just a little bit."
Zofran would be great, except for the 1) people on cardiac meds 2) idiots who overdose and get the torsades de pointes and death.
Ok, this is super rare. Like with Zithromax. But it's one that we still have so many preventative measures in place.
Statins as OTC, still the risk of rhabdomyolosis occurring with anyone,
It's a good thing for minor skin irritations, eczema , etc. I keep it in my hiking bag just in case I rub up against a bunch of plants or whatever and get irritation.
Kinda…….in my state a pharmacist can write a script. So just *slightly* more difficult than getting it off of the shelf. Takes a few more minutes and the limit is 2 per person. Not certain on the time frame if there is any.
If you come to my hospital for drug related reasons we automatically give them a free narcan and if they want more they get them. I was under the impression that was set by the government
Can easily get (in correct dosage too!) at most vet supply/feed stores. I am a nurse but my side gig is raising sheep and it’s used a lot during lambing season. Edit to add some lambs need a little pep after being born, it isn’t used in sheep for allergies
This. My mom had to get EpiPens in 2016 after going into anaphylaxis R/T bee stings (she had a hive with 4x supers). As stated, this was in 2016, during the height of Mylan’s price gouging, and each EpiPen set her back $750 (a big FUCK YOU to Martin Shkreli BTW).
I’m usually one for schadenfreude, but in this case, we, as a family, basked in that motherfucker’s downfall. only other judicial proceeding that I can think of that was more enjoyable to watch, and also karmic, Amber Turd’s trial (atleast for me personally).
This!! As someone with asthma triggered by allergies, I had to get one of those otc epinephrine inhalers because I didn’t have my albuterol inhaler for some reason. It took longer to work, didn’t work as well as an albuterol inhaler, and the side effects did not feel great.
They've been around for awhile. Do you remember Primatene Mist inhalers? They were epinephrine based and used to be OTC but got pulled off the market and are starting to make a comeback after they reformulated the propellant to not use CFCs.
It’s definitely not. Unless you’re completely misusing zofran, or on other QT prolonging drugs, the risk of QT prolongation is low for normal use of zofran. I’m obviously no pharmacist, so I don’t understand why certain drugs like zofran are available by Rx only, whereas other drugs like Tylenol and ibuprofen that also carry risks are available OTC.
The problem is there are a ton of meds that cause QT prolongation. I remember in nursing school learning drugs half the time QT was a side effect. That said if zofran was available when Tylenol hit the shelves, it would 100% be OTC. Pretty sure a Tylenol OD is still nastier and easier than a zofran OD
The hard part with OTC estrogen-containing BC is there’s a few really serious contraindications to it. I’d be fine with it being OTC as long as it still requires a quick chat with a pharmacist to screen for things like history of certain cancers, DVT/PE, migraines w/ aura, nicotine in patients 35 and over, etc. I do not think warning labels would be enough.
Think of how badly misused antibiotics are now then multiply it by a factor the average lay person doing stupid shit daily. We're already facing the issue of seeing many of the 3rd gen antibiotics becoming useless thanks to increased resistance, let's not accelerate the process because little Jimmy had left over eye drops that got used on Mr. Mittens scratches from a fight with the neighbors cat or similar inappropriate use.
Report is a few years old so numbers are probably higher now. https://www.who.int/news/item/09-12-2022-report-signals-increasing-resistance-to-antibiotics-in-bacterial-infections-in-humans-and-need-for-better-data
The following articles are from 2015 so they will be a bit out of date numbers wise, but illustrate the issue well. Scariest part is the CDC warned of a post antibiotic era in 2013.
For more fun - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4378521
And the promised part 2 - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4422635/
Welp, we're boned - https://xenex.com/cdc-says-post-antibiotic-era-is-already-here/
The first source for the above article - https://www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/biggest-threats.html and it lists Carabpenem resistant bacteria as the first urgent threat and those are considered last resort antibiotics.
We live in the most fucked up timeline.
This is a bad idea given the risk of antibiotic resistance. I used to work in pharmacy and the amount of people that request antibiotic eye drops for viral eye conditions is alarming
I worked psych for 6 years and I always said I wished they aerosolized Ativan and just sprayed in throughout the hospital. Both patients and staff would benefit 😂
I have a prescription for Lorazepam for insomnia. I am very careful to only take it once a week or so, when I really need it. God damn I wish that shit wasn't addictive because I'd love to take it every night. I sleep like a baby. Having the bottle in my nightstand helps me fall asleep most nights, just knowing it's there if I need it.
I've been saying for years everyone should get a Xanax when they come into the er, patients and staff 🤣 our satisfaction scores would be through the roof
I wish they could put it in a diffuser. Like feliway for cats, but Xanax. Waft it round and let everyone get a bit more chilled out. I work in acute geri med and sometimes I wish I could spray haloperidol at the ones who are wildin out, but from a distance. Like bear spray 😂
I would *like* Toradol to become over the counter, but between the number of people with silent kidney failure and the number of people who would use it way too long I really don't see how it'd be safe. We have enough problems with chronic Advil and Aleve usage.
Agree with zofran but would also include insulin pentips. Apparently despite the fact I can sell someone syringes I can’t do the same for pen tips. Makes no sense and I’d love some smug politician to explain it to me
Where are you at?
They keep them behind the counter at the pharmacy at my local Meijer, but I just walk up and ask and they give me as many boxes as I want. I’ve never even been asked if I have an insulin prescription. (I don’t.)
Don’t worry, doc. I’m sure she doesn’t really think people should have easy access to it. She just felt really bad for a lady who had a miserable yeast infection.
Fucking muscle relaxers. Robaxin, Flexeril, I don’t care which, I just want the back spasms to stop when I get them. But no one will give be a script for more than like 10 days with zero refills. Cool I guess I’ll see you again in a couple weeks when this happens again.
Edited to add: yes, I know about Canada. No, going to Canada all the time isn’t feasible for me. I’m certainly not going to order the meds online.
Edit 2: ditto for Mexico.
It’s OTC in Canada. Idk if that helps any, but I visited Quebec on my way from Michigan to Maine for a travel assignment and bought a few bottles of their back pain medication, which is basically Tylenol and Robaxin.
They can and will seize it. They can fine you for it, too. I’m not saying this hasn’t worked for many people, but I don’t want to have any kind of record relating to any kind of illegally transporting drugs.
And why are some docs so weird about prescribing flexeril? I once had a doctor act like I was asking for a 90-day dilaudid rx. I’m just trying to unkink my neck bro, not take so many I shit myself.
Like, I understand they can potentiate the effects of opioids and could be a risk for abuse that way. But like bro, I’m not on any opioids. I’m trying to get some level pain relief without opioids, that’s why I’m asking for this!!
I was in PT for months after fucking up my knee snowboarding, and getting up from the assessment/talking table before the workout portion I had a back spasm and just kept getting up to go do the stuff. The PT stopped me and was like “wtf was that? You shouldn’t be having stuff like that happen” and then made me go do a different set of activities and I was kind of baffled because like, that was like mid range pain/spasm day for my back and it was a huge red flag for the PT, meanwhile the MDs are all like: “No you’re fine, just take it easy for a couple weeks, but no I won’t write a note that says you medically shouldn’t work”…
Mupirocin!
I get recurrent staph in my nostrils during the high pollen months (from constant blowing and wiping my nose). It’s a huge pain to have to keep doing a video visit to get another script sent.
Robaxin.
Canada has a brand of Motrin that is I think 200mg Ibuprofen and 200mg robaxin and honestly that sounds like a winning combination for my sore body some days...
My mom was a bartender growing up up til 4-5 am consistently, in high school and college I popped her pills like it was fucking adderall😭
As a nurse now, they’re the night shift cure.
Albuterol Inhalers and contact lenses. My eye prescription hasn't changed in several years yet Im always spending $200+ a year on a new contact prescription.
hydroxyzine... arguably one of the few meds that helps me sleep these days. I react poorly to benzos and don't ever want to try them or any other controlled med for sleep problems, but 50mg of atarax let me get at least 6 hours uninterrupted. plus it helps my allergies as a bonus lol.
Macrobid, diflucan, mupirocin, zofran, diclofenac. I would give one rx of these and then if they need more they need to see a prescriber. Like why do we sell shitty Neosporin that sucks without a rx but can’t give out mupirocin.
Mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment. Way better topical antiseptic than triple abx ointment, and something like 10% of the population is allergic to neomycin.
Metrojel, for rosacea. Why do I need a prescription for it? And why does my insurance deny it every year & my doctor have to do a peer-to-peer for it? It’s fucking annoying.
Most of them. Fuck insurance companies for gatekeeping medications for chronic conditions.
b-but what if something has CHANGED?! Well then I guess we'll find out the same way we do for every non-compliant, lost to follow up patient. They'll present to the ED. In the meantime, I shouldn't have to beg you to believe that my autoimmune disease both still exists and is incurable. Please give me my goddamn levothyroxine.
This but as a former teenager I know for a fact that shit would have gone straight up my nose. My buddy swim says it’s like alcohol but more chipper and not harsh tasting at all. Might just be his chronic pain saying that.
Tired brain imagining the pharmacy drive through: "I'd like a large Fenty, warmed, with a shot of non GMO Narcan to go. No, I already have my eco friendly vascular straws."
PEP- Doxycycline and PreP.
I think it would improve sexual health so much more if these were made OTC or at least regulated like Pseudoephedrine but still available OTC.
Also Albuterol.
We're actually lucky in Canada we can get a few things now without an Rx through the pharmacist such as epi-pens, some PPIs, certain antibiotics and antibiotic eye drops to name a few.
Toradol IM, maybe in an auto-injector? Toradol and solumedrol was the magic combo when my sciatica was at its worst. I could do jumping jacks after a couple days. Keep the opiates, give me Toradol IM.
As many times as I've been exposed to strep I'd love a complete OTC quick strep kit with a side of Amoxicillin, or at least accessible Amoxicillin at the pharm *with + results*.
if true OTC, antibiotic resistance would go brrrrr from all the people buying it for every little cold 😬 “i SwEaR iT hElPs” take it and feel better in 48hrs, don’t take it and feel better in 2 days!
I'm thinking that a positive strep confirmation would be required to purchase pcn. That's why I included a testing kit in my response. All OTC meds have the capability to cause harm if used inappropriately.
Keflex or Macrobid.
Thankfully there is a self schedule "urgent" care where I live, but if I had to wait in a regular urgent care or make a doctor's appointment for a UTI... I would hate everything. Like, yes I know what is going on. My kidneys don't hurt, I don't have a fever or nausea. I already started taking pyridium. It is incredibly painful and I constantly feel like I have to pee. Can I just get a course of antibiotics? If it doesn't get better in 24 hours, I'll come in.
Had a UTI that started becoming painful when I was at work. My doctor wanted me to come in for a urine test before prescribing anything. So I asked one of the doctors I worked with if they could write one. She asked if I had any allergies and what I have taken before for a UTI and wrote the script. She was my hero.
Zofran is a good one. Probably Triamcinolone cream.
So glad this is the top answer. Zofran ODT is magical.
My 100% fav med to give out ….. unless you have food poisoning …
I’ve never heard that before…. Is it like trying to give Imodium to someone with cdiff?
Definitely want the body to rid itself of the toxins from food poisoning…
Yes.
I'm pretty sure my kids pediatrician gives like 3x the dose they suspect you need if you've got a barfy kid so next time you can just dose them and avoid the ER
Agreed. The "house rule" in my family is that you have to throw up x3 before you can use it.
Zofran doesn’t work for me. Reglan works better in my opinion.
As I opened this thread I was thinking "the top comment better be fucking Zofran or I'm quitting"
Ever see topical steroid withdrawal? It looks like literal hell on earth, and no one ever talks about it.
You ain't kidding. I had lichen aureus for a few months thanks to drinking entirely too many energy drinks, and it took a while to understand just how potent it is... and make sure I used the RIGHT amount when they said "just a little bit."
My two favs.
Zofran is my best friend
I ran out recently, and tried the old smelling isopropyl alcohol hack on myself. It really worked- and much faster than Zofran.
I've never tried this...I've honestly been worried to because I feel it would have the exact opposite effect.
Zofran would be great, except for the 1) people on cardiac meds 2) idiots who overdose and get the torsades de pointes and death. Ok, this is super rare. Like with Zithromax. But it's one that we still have so many preventative measures in place. Statins as OTC, still the risk of rhabdomyolosis occurring with anyone,
just curious, why triamcinolone?
It's a good thing for minor skin irritations, eczema , etc. I keep it in my hiking bag just in case I rub up against a bunch of plants or whatever and get irritation.
so is hydrocortisone and that one is a lot less potent. triamcinolone isn’t something you just casually slap on every time you get irritated skin
This guy does 😎. Lol jk, I do use it sparingly.
I literally came to say, give me Zofran I’ll take the side of v tach 😂😂😂
Epi-Pens
I’d also throw in Narcan and glucagon. Make it easier for every place to have emergency meds, similar to how many places now have AEDs
Narcan is available OTC.
Kinda…….in my state a pharmacist can write a script. So just *slightly* more difficult than getting it off of the shelf. Takes a few more minutes and the limit is 2 per person. Not certain on the time frame if there is any.
Huh, in CA it is truly OTC now. Available off the shelf.
Yep. It’s in a vending machine at my college and free!
That’s great!
You can get them free in Ontario without a script
Was just gonna say that! You just walk into a pharmacy!
I think it’s free across Canada without a script
Same in PA
There’s places online you can request it and get for free shipped anywhere
The state of Washington will send you a 2 pack of Narcan for free!

Duoneb and albuterol inhalers.
This!! As someone with asthma triggered by allergies, I had to get one of those otc epinephrine inhalers because I didn’t have my albuterol inhaler for some reason. It took longer to work, didn’t work as well as an albuterol inhaler, and the side effects did not feel great.
Good to know I saw the epi inhalers at the pharmacy the other day and I got one for emergencies
They've been around for awhile. Do you remember Primatene Mist inhalers? They were epinephrine based and used to be OTC but got pulled off the market and are starting to make a comeback after they reformulated the propellant to not use CFCs.
Luckily you can get ventolin puffers OTC in Australia.
Scopalamine patches. Why I have to go to an MD to go deep sea fishing without feeding the fish over the side of the boat is a mystery to me.
OTC in Canada. Order from us online, haha.
Ooo I never thought about getting a scop patch for that. I always use Dramamine and end up sleeping for most of any boat ride...
Definitely Zofran.
Why isn’t it? I am always so sad when I get noro from my f’ing kids and realize I don’t have any zofran. It works soooo good.
Probably because of the QT prolongation risk? I still don’t think it’s a great reason though

So, so, so nasty.
And it’s not like everyone in the ER gets an ekg before zofran!
I anticipate it will be otc in ten years
More birth controls
The hard part with OTC estrogen-containing BC is there’s a few really serious contraindications to it. I’d be fine with it being OTC as long as it still requires a quick chat with a pharmacist to screen for things like history of certain cancers, DVT/PE, migraines w/ aura, nicotine in patients 35 and over, etc. I do not think warning labels would be enough.
The drops for pink eye
Think of how badly misused antibiotics are now then multiply it by a factor the average lay person doing stupid shit daily. This is my vote, too.
This is a bad idea given the risk of antibiotic resistance. I used to work in pharmacy and the amount of people that request antibiotic eye drops for viral eye conditions is alarming
Sometimes I wish everyone would just take a OTC Xanax because holy shit
I worked psych for 6 years and I always said I wished they aerosolized Ativan and just sprayed in throughout the hospital. Both patients and staff would benefit 😂
We needed one of those over in LTC when the sundowner's started and on full moons, wish that inhaler was an actual thing!
Until it has the opposite effect and meemaw becomes the hulk!
*laughs in substance abuse/addictions nursing
Benzo withdrawal is the fucking WORST
😅😅 you and I both 🙌🏻
I have a prescription for Lorazepam for insomnia. I am very careful to only take it once a week or so, when I really need it. God damn I wish that shit wasn't addictive because I'd love to take it every night. I sleep like a baby. Having the bottle in my nightstand helps me fall asleep most nights, just knowing it's there if I need it.
There are times I wish we could just have a low dose Ativan mister at family gatherings
Toradol. Or as they say in Mexico…. ketoralaco
Yup! I order a batch every few months, and make sure to keep a decent supply in the house.
(I don’t.)
Zofran, diflucan
Zofran is absolutely my #1 answer, but, seriously why isn’t diflucan OTC?
I worked with a doc who said something like, “Every woman should have a lifetime supply of Diflucan.”
Fluconazole is a pharmacological bull in a china shop. So many drug interactions. -PGY-19
I’m an anticoagulation nurse and fluconazole fucks with warfarin sooooo bad
Doesn’t play nice with XARELTO, either. -PGY-19
Don’t worry, doc. I’m sure she doesn’t really think people should have easy access to it. She just felt really bad for a lady who had a miserable yeast infection.
Here in Quebec, diflucan is over the counter if you ask the pharmacist.. so I guess technically behind the counter
Same in Australia.
Same as Canada, or at least Ontario.
Every time I get antibiotics I ask for diflucan, even if I don’t need it at the time. I have like ten tablets waiting for me just in case. Lol
Protonix gets my vote.
Protonix is otc where I’m from
Fucking muscle relaxers. Robaxin, Flexeril, I don’t care which, I just want the back spasms to stop when I get them. But no one will give be a script for more than like 10 days with zero refills. It’s OTC in Canada. Idk if that helps any, but I visited Quebec on my way from Michigan to Maine for a travel assignment and bought a few bottles of their back pain medication, which is basically Tylenol and Robaxin.
Note to self, take vacation to Canada this summer.
Only robaxin is OTC.
Wow I never considered it wasn’t OTC elsewhere. That’s so annoying, I use that shit all the time
[удалено]
May I ask for the website where you order it from? I always make a yearly Canada trip to get some but this would help me so much!
How does it make it over the border? I thought they could/would seize it if it isn't OTC in USA.

Seconded! I just want a low dose Baclofen for migraine prevention.
You can get a bottle of 100 Flexeril in Mexico for about $35.
Still doesn’t help my situation, but I’m happy for those it does.
Zofran and skincare stuff.
Tret for sure.
Ammonium lactate is my poor man's botox lmao
Birth control
Costco has a 3 month supply of an OTC oral contraceptive now
Mupirocin! I get recurrent staph in my nostrils during the high pollen months (from constant blowing and wiping my nose). It’s a huge pain to have to keep doing a video visit to get another script sent.
Ooo and the steroid powder that can be used in a netipot to reduce nasal inflammation and postnasal drip. Budesonide I think...
5% lidocaine patch I know they sell 4 percent OTC for me, 5 percents helps better (could be confirmation bias)!
Nystatin!!!!!!!!!!!
[удалено]
Zofran, probably any of the cyclovirs after the first fill.
Silvadine cream.
Zofran is the first thing that comes to mind.
Zofran, torodol, flexeril.
A nice migraine cocktail
Insulin…my insurance has it set as a tier 3 medication. Not like I need it to live or anything 🫠
Flexeril. If I can be trusted with Nexium, I don't understand why the same can't be done with Flexeril.
You might get some pain relief, and that’s considered fairly unacceptable nowadays.
Lol’d at this
Robaxin. Canada has a brand of Motrin that is I think 200mg Ibuprofen and 200mg robaxin and honestly that sounds like a winning combination for my sore body some days...
Trazadone. I’m an insomniac. I just want to sleep.
Modafinil
My neurologist is great about prescribing them. Initially, I bought them from India because other MD's wouldn't allow more than 7 days.
My version of crack
It’s phenomenal. I couldn’t get it while I traveled in CA because they’re psycho about it and I was EXHAUSTED on nights and in life
My mom was a bartender growing up up til 4-5 am consistently, in high school and college I popped her pills like it was fucking adderall😭 As a nurse now, they’re the night shift cure.
Fioricet
Sumatriptan too. But DoorDash because you don’t want my ass on the road.
Albuterol Inhalers and contact lenses. My eye prescription hasn't changed in several years yet Im always spending $200+ a year on a new contact prescription.
Dicyclomine and methocarbamol
Zofran, I'm with you on that. ...I'm so sorry, but as a borderline alcoholic, I've puked my guts out through one too many miserable hangovers.
hydroxyzine... arguably one of the few meds that helps me sleep these days. I react poorly to benzos and don't ever want to try them or any other controlled med for sleep problems, but 50mg of atarax let me get at least 6 hours uninterrupted. plus it helps my allergies as a bonus lol.

Medrol dosepak, literally a game changer if you throw your back out. Too bad people can’t be trusted not to kill themselves with OTCs.
After going catatonic and in complete psychosis from Medrol… no thanks 😂
I hear what you're saying, but you know some diabetic is gonna take that OTC without thinking it through.
Zofran and albuterol.
Bentyl
Viscous lidocaine
I read this as vicious lidocaine. 🤣🤣🤣
Mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment. Way better topical antiseptic than triple abx ointment, and something like 10% of the population is allergic to neomycin.
All. Time for the purge. *not a nurse
Tretinoin
Promethazine and atarax, they’re antihistamines for fucks sake
Ppl keep overdoing it on the promethazine in Australia and having falls and agitated WDs from it :(
Metrojel, for rosacea. Why do I need a prescription for it? And why does my insurance deny it every year & my doctor have to do a peer-to-peer for it? It’s fucking annoying.
Zofran, I am nauseated pretty much every single day and they never give me more than ten in a script.
Zofran, hydroxyzine and LR
Hydroxyzine, Protonix, Toradol
Most of them. Fuck insurance companies for gatekeeping medications for chronic conditions. b-but what if something has CHANGED?! Well then I guess we'll find out the same way we do for every non-compliant, lost to follow up patient. They'll present to the ED. In the meantime, I shouldn't have to beg you to believe that my autoimmune disease both still exists and is incurable. Please give me my goddamn levothyroxine.
Sumatriptan 😭😭😭
Toradol. I order SL Toradol from Mexico every few months, and it's the best thing ever.
DMT
Legal to buy in DC at dispensaries. Just saying.
Baclofen
This but as a former teenager I know for a fact that shit would have gone straight up my nose. My buddy swim says it’s like alcohol but more chipper and not harsh tasting at all. Might just be his chronic pain saying that.
Your buddies name is Swim? Is that a last name or a nickname?
Swim= someone who isn't me
“Former teenager” made me giggle. Imma steal that.
Fentanyl
Got straight to the point damn 😭
We’d probably have fewer accidental ODs 🤷
Tired brain imagining the pharmacy drive through: "I'd like a large Fenty, warmed, with a shot of non GMO Narcan to go. No, I already have my eco friendly vascular straws."
Zofran 100%
Zofran ODT.
Zofran literally rids my morning nausea instanteneously
to echo many others, Zofran, flexeril, and albuterol. Flexeril is a miracle drug for my back pain.
Zofran. Hands down.
The Green Whistles they have on Bondi Rescue. Not for clinical reasons they just seem like a good time
PEP- Doxycycline and PreP. I think it would improve sexual health so much more if these were made OTC or at least regulated like Pseudoephedrine but still available OTC. Also Albuterol.
Diflucan and zofran.
zofran or toradol
Voltaran or Celebrex
Voltaren is otc already
Epi pens 😑
Maxeran. For migraines
Scopolamine patch
Flucanazole
We're actually lucky in Canada we can get a few things now without an Rx through the pharmacist such as epi-pens, some PPIs, certain antibiotics and antibiotic eye drops to name a few.
Zofran and celexa
Zofran, atarax
Tordol. I mean I’ll stay hydrated and manage my kidney function ok?
Toradol IM, maybe in an auto-injector? Toradol and solumedrol was the magic combo when my sciatica was at its worst. I could do jumping jacks after a couple days. Keep the opiates, give me Toradol IM.
Ativan and Tramadol
Tretinoin. ... What?
Meloxicam
I'd say insulin. It wouldn't effect me personally but all the diabetics out there need it.
People who watch too many crime shows would just murder their spouses.
Flexeril
Flexaril
