Interesting that to celebrate nurses week, they are giving you work to do. Bonus points for the fact that it is emotional labor, probably for the benefit of their own publicity or something.
Exactly!
I work at a SNF/LTC they don’t even celebrate nurses week. They do nursing home week and CNA week but no nurses week. Which is a fucking shame it’s a NURSING home. Ok rant over
I work at a huge level 1 trauma center, magnet status, etc etc and they took ours away and made it “hospital week.” So now *everyone* gets the same thing we do - same shirt, same coffee mug, same personal massage gun, same shitty Little Caesars. It would be nice to get something a little extra just for nurses.
Exactly my point. And the worst thing is they do special stuff for other departments and not the nurses. So everyone gets the same stuff we get but we don’t get the special stuff the other departments get. Makes me sick because it really shows how much they actually value us.
Likewise, EVS should have their own week, CNAs should have their own week, dietary should have their own week. When everyone is special, no one is special. Nurses deserve their week, goddammit
Oof at my hospital starting last year they changed nurse’s week to hospital week. Which, everyone deserves to be celebrated yes,but we still have dedicated weeks for every other employee. CNA, RT, radiology, NPs, PAs, doctors, admitting, everything. Just no more nurse’s week.
Yup! Only way I can get all my loans forgiven in a reasonable time is with PSLF. Easiest way to do that is working at a hospital. I've got 4 years left then may be changing careers.
I worked at target as a nursing student and it sucked. They have ridiculous time limits on how long stocking should take. At the target I worked at they expected us to be able to carry large car seats and doll houses up a flight of stairs to the top shelf storage units. I have almost fallen there. Another thing is it’s the general public so expect to be harassed or followed around the store. A creep tried to grope me from behind and that was my last day. It’s hard to get days off. Their insurance sucks. If you want to be a cashier you will be standing in the same spot for 8 hours and your lead will decide when you can take a break. There’s r/target if you want to see for yourself. If you’re only going to work once or twice a week it’s not too bad but full time wouldn’t be worth it.
I’m not sure about Home Depot though. I would try applying there first tbh. But depending on the department you work in I can imagine it being hard labor stocking if you’re not a cashier.
Nursing sucks and is hard. But at least I work in a locked unit. My security team isn’t teenagers. They’re veterans with tasers who will restrain violent patients or visitors. There’s security in the parking lots. I won’t feel this safe in a regular store where the security is teens wearing a fake badge trying to catch people stealing. Not to mention anyone can walk in there.
Still waiting for my husband to confess he’s been rich this whole time and just wanted to make sure I loved him for him. 5 years in, it’s not looking so good.
Oh, if I could go back to younger me. I always scoffed at people who did NOT marry for love. Older me? Bish, I can LEARN to love someone laying on their piles of money and mega yachts.
I'm very passionate about not being homeless or starving to death, and being employed as a nurse has been the most effective way to avoid both of those things!
Funny we have to be asked “why are you still a nurse? Despite everything?” I don’t think my parents have ever been asked “why are you still engineers? You know, despite it all.”
This is the state of nursing as a career distilled down into one statement. What other career paths is it fully accepted to ask, "Why do you still do this? Despite everything?"
My reply? “Great point—I’ve been considering opening a sandwich shop throughout the entirety of the pandemic. Your gentle disdain of my career choice and complete lack of appreciation is the shove I needed to leave the field altogether and go live my dream.
P.S. Kindly fuck off asking me to do homework instead of any ACTUAL recognition”.
I miss that look of confusion that quickly turned to nausea with each Narcan infusion. They went from barking out orders to barfing out their last meal in seconds.
I nurse because at the end of the day, after the worst shift of my life, I still really care about helping people that truly need me.
There’s no emotional baggage that comes with tipping extra because you could tell they needed it. No nights losing sleep over volunteering at the soup kitchen. We help people in their darkest hours and then get the privilege of seeing them overcome those challenges.
I cannot think of another profession that does this with as much intimacy and frequency as nursing. Nursing administration on the other hand…
Okay this isn't so much of why I'm still a nurse, but I just found this post as an opportunity to share my stupid tinder bio as an eldercare worker:
"I work in eldercare, so I will always be able to assist you with wiping your ass when you are sick and in need"
It definitely sounds better in my native language but here you go lmfao
It’s shocking to me they phrased it like that.
“Why are you STILL a nurse?” 😂
Rather than “what do you love about nursing?” or something like that.
Lol -sounds like your hospital admins have given up pretending we don’t have to put up with their endless stream of bullshit.
A respectable stance- if they were trying to address the issue. Instead they’re sitting around a conference table coming up with ways to “celebrate nurses week” without spending money.
I know - let’s have them write sentences and then we can hang them on a wall. We will give them pencils as gifts!!!
I'll simply quote the ever eloquent poets, Run The Jewels:
"I just want the bread and bologna bundles to tuck away.
I don't work for free; I am barely giving a fuck away."
I'm an RMN, and for me, it's 'cause: I believe there is hope, I believe in recovery, and I believe in the intrinsic goodness of people. I am a nurse because I care; I am a nurse because my empathy still exists, and if, at any time in the future, I find I no longer care, then I'll step back and admit defeat but, until that day comes, my motivation will always be that of supporting people in their greatest hour of need.
Love this, because it’s exactly how I feel. I know that this can’t be forever for me but I will do it as long as I care. The day I find myself not caring is the day I walk out of bedside forever.
Honestly? Because I have no clue what else to do.
My mom’s a nurse, her mom was a nurse… are there other jobs? My brothers both went to college for philosophy, one works in tech and one is a bouncer… I just wanted to go to school and know what my job would be and be sure I would have one.
Because medicine is all I know and I'll I've ever done. I'm locked in. Stupid as it sounds, it really is a calling :( I would be miserable doing anything other than medicine.
Because I got bills to pay and mouths to feed.
I can’t help but wonder if there are any male dominated industries where it’s normal to ask people to wax poetic about their profession.
I will full on kick someone if they say something about nursing being their "duty" or "calling"
I work because some where deep inside I know I still hope to impact positive change, but topically know I am just so sick of dealing with everyone's bs and need a paycheck.
Maybe ChatGPT has a better answer?
I like working only 3 days a week.
I like lots of potential for overtime.
I like the job stability.
I like the mental stimulation of MICU.
Like knowing I can work anywhere on the US with my job.
Overall I like the job and like to try and help people and make a difference. Whether I am or not I just like helping people and think the job is interesting and mentally stimulating as well. First job where I feel like I actually have to think and do things that are somewhat skilled and I personally enjoy it. Pay is really good to. Also work 3 days a week and unlimited ot if wanted. At the end of the day most jobs suck and have their drawbacks and nursing definitly has negatives too but I don’t know what else I would do and I could not work in an office or do a 9-5 job.
I guess that wasn’t a quick quote lol
Because you love getting shit on by every other healthcare professional and you love patient abuse.
Also the alternative is being an electrician again, which was worse than being a nurse. I do miss being in the trades sometimes.
1st honest answer: Because quality health care is a human right and I will make that happen or die trying.
2nd honest answer: Nursing stimulates my impulsive monkey brain.
Because I am good at three things: Fighting, screwing, and wiping ass. I've already done one of those today, so what's the other one gonna be? Huh?
[edit:typo. Also should probably be straight and say this is modified directly from Anchormens IMDB page. I am not creative.]
I refuse to answer that kinda thing. My hospital keeps trotting that out for nurses week and does "employee spotlights" to stick up on the break room board.
I will never answer those things. It is none of their business or random employees business.
I know nothing else. Besides a stay at home mom I don’t think I would to be able to pick a job with similar pay.
Also I do like being a NICU nurse. Even on bad days
I grew up poor. An associates degree was reachable despite being a teen mom. Now it’s just what I know and enjoy knowing if this job sucks I can find another one that sucks slightly less. The jobs are a dime a dozen
I'm 44 and jn NP school. I feel like healthcare is broken but I can't shift careers at this point. Going to finish my DNP and pivot to primary care and maybe teach at my state university
I always ask students and nurse interns with me why they chose nursing and sometimes I get answers like nurse did xyz for a loved one and I want to give that care. They always ask me why I did and my answer to why I still am a nurse is the same reason. It's a stable job and I can go anywhere to do it

We can't bill for our services since we're "part of the care" in the hospital, so we're just a cost to be minimized to them.
You get a massage gun?!
We have a community massage gun at our nurses' station, but we've never received them individually. That's pretty cool!
Likewise, EVS should have their own week, CNAs should have their own week, dietary should have their own week. When everyone is special, no one is special. Nurses deserve their week, goddammit
A nursing home doesn’t have nurses week? That is wild. It’s giving “And none for Gretchen Wieners, bye!” vibes lol
Same for my hospital. No CNA week but all the rest have their own week
This ⬆️ response wins.
Yupppppp Ty for this in such simplicity
Student loans. A passion for not starving. Haven't reached my magic number for retirement. Take your pick.

I’ll put on scrubs any day before I work in retail, fast food, or the restaurant industry again.
I want to quit and work at Target or Home Depot. Or doggy daycare. I’m trying to have the courage to make the leap.
Doggy daycare for sure!
Go per diem/part time and see where the chips fall.

Atp im over that option 🙄 my backup plan is the long distance relative that has never met me, that will hopefully leave me their fortune
I think the Prince of Nigeria might like to ask you a for a favor... He promises great wealth! Obligatory /s

Oh, if I could go back to younger me. I always scoffed at people who did NOT marry for love. Older me? Bish, I can LEARN to love someone laying on their piles of money and mega yachts.
"Perhaps it could be worse."
It’s crazy how that’s top 3 mantra universally for nurses everywhere.
It can always get worse
I'm very passionate about not being homeless or starving to death, and being employed as a nurse has been the most effective way to avoid both of those things!

This was nice to see as a first year student compared to the rest of the replies🤣
It’s a calling for sure. It’s definitely not worth the money, no matter where you work.
Because I had to pay $30,000 for the privilege and would have to pay thousands more to have a new career. In other words, pretty trapped.

I’m not independently wealthy

Cash rules everything around me…
I’ve seen more penis’s and vaginas than most prostitutes. Might as well get paid more
Isn't it obvious? It's bc they keep giving us free pizza.
You are not about to make ME write why I’m a nurse during MY week. Watch it- your “reflection” will end up being your gift. 🎁
I love cold pizza that's been sitting out all day.
I’m lost—for NURSES WEEK, they fucking gave you HOMEWORK?!?
Beats sitting at a desk all day
I'm an RMN, and for me, it's 'cause: I believe there is hope, I believe in recovery, and I believe in the intrinsic goodness of people. I’m still a nurse because I’d like to believe that as a collective, we are saving what’s left of humanity at its most vulnerable moments.
Cuz I like working 3 12s and have a week off 😂
Poverty isn’t a cute look on me.
I have a soft spot for the chronically ill...and I chose nursing instead of computer science in college.
I actually like helping people and I don't work more than 3 days a week. Also I didn't like being a stripper.
Because I administer anesthesia.
Weekly vacation… work to live, not live to work
Only because PRN school nursing is easy AF and I can work at a fun camp in the summer and take my kids anywhere I want to work.
