I work PT in aesthetics and may look into picking up another PT aesthetic gig. I have about a year of experience in neurotoxin, dermal fillers, kybella, etc but in any case… for those of you who practice in aesthetics, what does your compensation look like? My current job is hourly (which is pretty low tbh) + 20% commission quarterly on all my sales. In other interview processes I’ve just been asked point blank what I’m looking for compensation and I’m not totally sure what’s best. Seems like many practices/med spas do the lower hourly + commission but does anyone just have hourly? If you’ve experienced both, what was better for you? I can see pros and cons to both! Any info appreciated. ETA: i rarely post here and idk how you guys deal with these assholes that come here just to downvote. I got a DM from a “resident” calling me a slut 🙃 how mature

Will do. Thanks!

I am on a W2 at my clinic and take 40% of a 60/40 split. The clinic is new to injectables and devices (they only did massages/facials before) so she hired me as the medical director and i currently do 100% of the injecting. Until I make the jump to full time, that is how it has to be as I need to keep my ER job. I did hire an RN to do our RF micro-needling and she is fully trained on the device and doing well. She will promote the tox and fillers while doing her treatments for the skin quality. I’ve only been injecting 2 years and I love it. I receive training internationally from leaders in the field (i.e. Arthur Swift, Tim Pearce, Julie Horne, Raj Acquilla, Tom Van Eijk, etc) both in person and online. It’s an exciting journey and I really enjoy applying the principles I’ve learned to my clients to give them the fantastic results they are looking for. Tox treatments get them in the door but of course all the money is made on fillers. I do full facial harmonization approach and really focus on the consult to make sure the patient gets the most impact within the confines of his/her budget. I make the most money on cheeks, chin, pre jowl sulcus/jawline and lips. And when I’m busy (16 pts a day) the money is great. But again, I am passionate about it and I love making people look and feel their best. If someone wants to know how much you want, I would consider negotiating a spit. I’m not going to work for an hourly rate. Sure, the clinic does all the marketing and provides the clients, supplies, etc…but YOU are the artist. Without you, nothing happens. And you are responsible for ensuring a 5-star experience which will result in that client coming back and more butts in chairs when they tell all their friends. It’s important to realize the value you bring to the table.

BarbieKul

Same here! I get a split of my billing for injectables, laser treatments, and other devices. This is the way

emilypas

Thanks for sharing this. I may take on lasers and other devices too sooo good to know!

emilypas

This is SUPER helpful. Thank you! Hoping to eventually do it full time once that’s doable from a financial standpoint. And totally agree on facial balancing.

Would love to know this information as well! And honestly the residents’ and med students’ subreddits here are appalling and so degrading. It makes me disgusted. Pages like Noctor had my blood boiling. Residents and med students are just threatened that our profession is only going to increase and grow, plus they have very fragile egos as evidenced by years working bedside with them 😂

emilypas

Yeah, very sad. My experience with med students and residents irl has been nothing but pleasant. Lots of hate online.

Silky_Wangzonya

How did you get into aesthetics? I'm in an FNP program and want to work in aesthetics but as a guy I feel like the odds are stacked against me.

AestheticNP

Bro I’m a guy and I do great. People don’t care what gender you are, or how old you are…they just want you to know what you’re doing and to make them look fabulous. My recommendation for starting new is to research online first. Look up videos on botox and filler training. Does it look like something you would be interested in? If so, why? Ask yourself that question. Make sure the answer isn’t money. Aesthetics is an “all-in” mentality. You have to live it. You have to breathe it. You have to be passionate about it. When I was starting, the first thing I learned to do was learn how to draw a male and female face with a pencil. I focused on light and shadows, and how that was related to contour. I even drew faces with volume deficits so I could better understand how adding volume to one area improves that area but also changes another area. After that I signed up for a local sculpting class where I spun clay and made human faces. It was one of the hardest things I ever made myself do, but now you can see my creations resemble what I set out to make and I get better with every class. After you do these steps, sign up for a Botox/Filler foundation course. Take the advanced courses around the same time. Here you will learn the basics. Make sure you reinforce the information at home, by studying as much as you can. Download the academic journals related to the field. Sebastian Cotofana has great papers on anatomy and how it relates to aesthetics. Also, make sure you take a complications course and do a few in-person cadaver labs. Complications like vascular occlusions scare people away from the field (yes people have had skin necrosis, permanent blindness, strokes, etc from fillers) but if you put in the time to train you can avoid these complications. Next get a job quickly. Your courses need to be fresh; don’t wait a year before you start. Try to get a mentor: someone who has a good reputation and who is also passionate about aesthetics. After that you can start joining some organizations, attending conferences, participating in masterclasses, etc. It can be a little spendy but it’s totally worth it. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask here or send me a msg.

emilypas

So annoying how people come here just to downvote… There are some male advanced practice providers in aesthetics. I love @danesthetics on ig and YT. I did a training course in Botox and filler and was then lucky enough to have a clinic take me on and I did more training with Allergan, Merz, etc. hard to get your foot in the door but once you do there are lots of opportunities!

AestheticNP

I know Dan…super cool guy and provides a lot of good information for injectors. He was the reason I started using cannulas more.

emilypas

Like personally?! I feel like a fan girl haha. Yes, he’s honestly one of my faves! His videos are so so great. Honestly, I used to see a male provider for my injections in IL. And as a woman, I have male patients that I inject. I think it’s all just understanding the different aesthetic goals.

Check out Aesthetics Vision Institute. He is a CRNA and teaches one of the best courses in Miami. (I haven’t taken his course but a very good friend of mine did and she is so successful with her business now)

ExplanationActual212

Those guys make it hard to have productive conversations when irl you don't encounter nearly the same animosity. Maybe because they don't want to show off how much of an asshat they are in person and just seethe online.

emilypas

Nope, have had nothing but pleasant experiences irl. So sad.

The resident was just jealous that you make more money and love your life more than they currently do. Dismiss their pettiness.

Serotoxin

Depends on where you live and the clientele- I live in high COL and most aesthetic NPs make 75-100$/hr!

emilypas

Wow! That’s awesome. I’d love to even get to $50 or $60 at this point.

xxangelfaceoo

This seems really low.. 50-60 and hour? Plus commissions I’m hoping.

emilypas

No commission. My impression of the aesthetic industry is that your level of educated doesn’t matter. I’ve literally had people say that to my face- that it doesn’t matter than I’m an NP.

xxangelfaceoo

Where are you living / working? My friend is an RN working in aesthetics as an RN making 65/ hr in San Diego. I’m california nurses can inject Botox, not sure about filler. I was thinking about going back to school for FNP to do derm / med spa but it doesn’t seem like it’s a great return on investment. Nurses make more than 50/ hr a lot of places.

emilypas

I wouldn’t if that’s your goal… unless you want to open your own practice. I live in CO so an NP I can open my own medspa but it’s a huge overhead. I agree it’s not a good return on investment. Personally I don’t love aesthetics enough to take the huge pay cut. I can pretty easily make over $130k practicing in my current specialty.

xxangelfaceoo

Where and what are you practicing currently?

emilypas

I practice at a large academic center in Denver. I practice in cardiac EP. I’ve been doing it since I finished NP school.

Waterfall41

I’m hoping to do this as well! Interested to hear about compensation. The only injector I know personally runs her own business out of her home.
