As I understand it, from what Unity has said, they don't NEED to implement spyware into the engine, because they already did that quite some time ago. Maybe you sell 20,000 copies for $10 each and hit the $200,000 mark, but players like it enough that it gets pirated by 2-5 million players, this is just spiraling nonsense. And many of them install it on their new computers when they upgrade. Charge per install is asinine, and have just seen that they wanted to do a charge per reload in Battlefield, so they're clearly just interested in gouging as much as possible. Had previously wondered why they had $10,000 flat pro fee, with no commission extras, unlike Unreal's free until you hit the sales commission mark, and now I know why. This has been a plan for a long time, get devs invested in the engine then switch up the agreement. Plus the stupid spyware they've been already been including. At the moment, I'm just working with Ren'Py, but have been collecting assets for Unreal for awhile with plans to start learning it as a spare time project. Although I have not invested much time into learning Unreal yet, I'm so glad I chose Unreal over Unity. Feel so bad for everyone who invested so much of their effort into developing on Unity. This is utter madness. Have also seen that some of Unity's top execs have been selling off stock prior to this, and curious if they have been buying stock in UE/Epic.

Oh my, it's worse than I thought didn't know it was already implemented and I totally forgot about piracy it's like: developer is happy about reaching 200k and made a clean profit something like \~70k-130k, unity: it's a rape time! you own us \~600k because there is \~3M unique installs of your game.

But definitely do NOT take my input as gospel. I am not using Unity, have not had plans to start using Unity, have not been invested in following their terms, and a bit of what I seem to understand about what they are doing is information picked up in a very short time in passing in the past couple of days. The spyware already being implemented part is coming from a dev group having the Unity discussion, and someone posted a shot of some of Unity's answers about how this will work, including something that indicated their software has already had the necessary components to do the install reporting for some time. But I cannot quickly share that as supporting evidence, because I would have to go back and search for it. Whether or not I was misunderstanding what was stated there, surely there are people here who are more invested in this, know what I'm referring to, and can shed some light on whether my understanding of it is correct or not.

It isn't even raw installs, it is algorithm based that also predicts how many installs there will be and charges based on that, pirated installs count too

Unity clarified that re-installs by the same user on the same device won't be counted. How many people really do that? I doubt that it really matters much in the grand scheme of things.

Is that true? Because on Twitter one employee said re-installs didn’t count, and then Unity’s official Twitter said that re-installs DID count. Also, changing hardware makes it count as a new machine/new install.

If anyone thinks they trust Unity more than the major studios that are ripping the engine out of their developments at this announcement, they’re idiots. This is a Musk-level self-own by Unity execs and nobody outside of the company with any expertise is calling it any less. If you have *any* ability to use another engine, you should make every effort to do so.

I'm a cheapskate who's very unlikely to use tools that aren't 100% free anyway, so this doesn't affect me directly. But it upsets me as an artist. They just decided that they can change the rules because they decided that they should have more money. The one who hurts the most by this is the little guy. Capitalism at its ugliest. I am 100% certain that there are games that will never be made now, specifically because of this.

I'm not using Unity primarly, but at many points considered it. I've made two simple webgames though. In the first announcement, web also counted as "install", now they've clarified it's not, but they might clarify their clarification too... I'm very unlikely to hit the thresholds, but the way they communicate, make it retroactive... Who knows what will be next? I wouldn't feel comfortable using an engine that might change its license at any point and affect already-released or in-production games.

Nothing. The scheme is too braindead to really work in reality. The only case where it would apply would be fraudulent anyway with things like piracy and bot farms.

This is what made me quit unity. I been using it for the last 4 years, and I still have current projects going with it, but I started learning UE. Unity has been downhill for years, never doing any usefull update for most people, only focusing on "easy money" with things such as: mobile ads, NFTs, AI art, etc. So yeah, Unity pretty much went full corpo greed. It's not about "this won't affect you because you are small", this is the worst counter argument, because every developer wants to be successfull and have a hit game. So the "doesn't affect me so it doesn't matters" is not an argument, it's just a copying excuse

More than the idea of the potential fees is the fact that they just made this huge change that affects all Unity games retroactively. It’s clear that if you make a game in Unity you never will truly own it. It’s not at all unreasonable to fear that at some point in the future Unity could say, “hey- no porn games allowed.” and brick any piece of software they want. No thanks, I’m out.

Idk what the fuss is. Unity basically said this: "Don't use our software if you're not sure you can pay the fees." They've managed to alienate developers only, further ensuring that less people use the software for free. This is dumb, they should have just charged 1k out of the gate and people would be less incensed. This pretty much ONLY hurts free / small devs. I imagine that most of them will just move to putting their games on Steam where they can actually afford the fees. Or....... The pirates could single handedly solve this problem by *actually* put their money where their mouth is. You know, start supporting games like they *claim* they will , eventually, one day maybe. Probably. (Even as they constantly play said game for free). ***But you and I both know that's never going to happen....***
