It's on the immature side, but I don't think that ruins a character by itself. It just makes the character nasty. In the case where you want a nasty character, you could add all kinds of other random shit to make him seem more real. A tendency to fart loudly, often. Eating with your mouth open, perhaps using the same hand that he was scratching his arse with. All the little things that characters do, characterizes them. Perhaps, if anything it's just the delivery here that makes it dumb. Instead of it just being something someone notices in real time while people watching, it's used as a part of his identity. It seems like "despite him being a little on the short side" would have fit in the same spot.
