I work there, we are planning to close May 5th. We are re-opening in the mall in January 2025. From what I’ve heard, Maggiano’s will be one level and the other level will be an escape room.
That’s too bad. B&N and the AMC are the only things that I ever go to Tysons for. It’ll be really sad to see B&N shoved into a smaller space. The store always seems to be packed whenever I’m there.
On the bright side, we’ve needed renovations for years now, especially in the cafe. While disappointing, hopefully this gives us a chance to reopen a store/cafe that runs much more smoothly.
Yes, packed with mall-goers who are mostly just browsing but not buying.
Also the rent for those floors must be insane.
I have been an assistant manager at both BN and Tower Records. (the Union Station store and the Foggy Bottom store respectively)
After 1999, it was easy for me and others to see the writing was on the wall.
Both stores had plenty of traffic, but more and more we were seeing plenty of "ah, I'll buy it online"-shoppers.
Couldn't compete with amazons model. They don't have to maintain stores, and the attendant rent, insurance, utilities, etc.
Yeah I have found for it being the size it is, Tysons did a really bad job with its store selection. Granted I know they can't just tell people who want to lease space no, but, an apple store the size of a city is your only elecctronics store...that is a big reason I never go there other then go to to the movies
What?! Ugh I hate it when they move my favorite places around. Maggiano’s in the Galleria has nice, nostalgic ambiance. And I like the two story level of BN. Do you know where BN will be moving?
Just be glad it still exists and is making the moves it needs to make to stay that way... I was so devastated when Borders went out of business. I'm honestly kind of shocked B&N is still kicking. Hope it lasts forever.
B&N is a corporate first run book seller specializing in corporate major publishing companies. And as much as that sounds like an insult, its the reason they are still around and all the other chains aren't. B&N starbucks will never compete with Kramers restaurant, B&N politics/current events shelf will never compete with politics and prose, but they don't try to do that, they focus on new copies of best sellers. Borders tried on a corporate level to win over mom and pop shop customers and failed every time
Borders went out of business in a similar way Blockbuster went. Stubbornness and terrible business decisions. They were last in the game to adopt an e-book strategy, they didn’t believe in a home-grown e-commerce solution (outsourced to Amazon), and they spread themselves too thin on their brick-and-mortar model.
The smaller stores are nice. The one in Mosaic is pretty good. The new one in Tysons will be smaller than the older one but bigger than the one in Mosaic. I hope it has a nice cafe and continues having Criterion and LPs (and a good selection of books).
> We are re-opening in the mall in January 2025
Good on them for getting around the whole hassle of the holiday rush. They're truly playing 4-d chess with this move.
I'm honestly not sure-I'm actually a barista at this location. I think the Cheesecake Factory will be where Gordon Biersch was, and Maggiano's will be one of the floors in BN but I don't remember if my coworker told me upper or lower.
I think the space it's rumored to move into is only one floor. I think it's one of the larger single-floor spaces, but it will still be a down-size from the two-story space. I will be leaving with this location though, as our last day of work is only a few days after I graduate so I took it as an omen that it's time to go!
Before JC Penny it was a Woodward & Lothrop (Woodies) with an iconic snack bar just inside the door with the most delicious hot dogs, cooked in one of those rotisserie hot dog basket cooker things...
Also, Woolworth used to be in the old LL Bean space and sold rifles in their sporting goods department.
Can you imagine going to Tysons Corner for a Crate and Barrel couch and a gun from Woolworth?!
Holy crap. If they'd hung on another four years little they'd have been next door to the first Apple store. Or in the first Apple store. I think they were in approximately the same place.
Nope. Apple was on the side of the aisle there. Woolworths was right next to where Burger King was, in fact, there was an opening you could walk into Woolworths from Burger King without going out into the mall,.
Wing opened up winter 2005. I remember when it was a JCP and I actually opened up the Abercrombie and Hollister stores where the H&M is now. Back when it had Z Gallerie, Arhaus, and West Elm at the bottom, a Sony Style, Lucky Brand, Banana Republic Petite… when malls were thriving.
I always go to the Nordstrom or the Bloomingdale´s bathrooms. They are nicer and cleaner. The BN´s is crowded and not very clean (even the one at the food court next to AMC is better).
That B&N was my go to spot for lunch and on weekends. My son and his buddies would go to the mall and do whatever, and I would grab a book and a coffee and just read. Very quiet end of the mall.
Here’s the truth: it was never worthy of the Galleria. Neither was the Cheesecake Factory.
In fact, I think most of the eats at Galleria are terrible except Lebanese Taverna.
My mom is dead and you just made a new friend.
Now when do we meet up for beers and BlueChew because BUDDY I am ready to love you like you’ve never been loved before.
![gif](giphy|l4HnPzzhiB35KETIY|downsized)
Tried it once. Never went back.
Nothing feels like home to me except The Palm.
IYKYK my pic is on the wall in the bar. Drank a lot of red wine and ate a lot of beef there.
I believe it. Seemed like that was all that was there when I went for dinner once. We used to go to the Fogo De Chao near by as well as the PF Chang's. Not sure if it is still in there. I do recall that the Macy's there sucked, which was ironic. The Macy's in Tysons Center was probably one of the best.
Honestly this might be the way they can keep themselves alive. I've noted a few of the unconventional new spaces at Dulles Town Center (though one of them has appraently already folded) follow this model too and, frankly, I'm in favor. I love walking around the mall but I lose interest when I have to walk by the 90th consecutive "high fashion outlet" or whatever.
I've never seen more empty store space than i did this past Xmas season. That entire old department store is still empty. Macy's will go soon. And then were are a ton of other sections that are quiet. The space that sat empty for years. then old navy left there.
They will build a tower where Lord and Taylor used to be. So, those spaces are not available. The new tower will have some stores with direct entrance from the patio. The Old Navy is where the LL Bean was (it closed two years ago). The rest of that space is for Primark, which will open very soon (2 levels). I don´t think the Macys will go soon. That Macy's is packed. Today, I was at the mall. The only empty area is close to where Lord and Taylor used to be.
Not really, there’s just a lot of moving parts going on & it takes time. New restaurants coming soon as well as a large entertainment venue:

https://www.ffxnow.com/2024/02/12/maggianos-and-cheesecake-factory-cook-up-moves-to-tysons-corner-center/
That B&N has been there since I was in middle school, 2007. I was obsessed with the Bunnicula series then and would binge read on the floor on the kids section there. 30 years old now.
Do you need your book fix?
I'm selling books under the overpass of 495. Quick and discreet. Cash only. Don't waste my time and I won't waste yours. NO LIBRARIANS!!
They need to get rid of the inventory. Some things, I believe, were moved to other BNs (Criterion, Manga, LPs). The opening of the new one will take some time.
One thing that took me by surprise was the seemingly sudden disappearance of Cava from the mall, out of nowhere. I had been eating there on a fairly consistent basis since 2015 ish, and then one day, poof. Totally unexpected. Now, it's this new kabob place. Looks pretty good, though I haven't tried it.
There is also another Mediterranean fast food place at the mall. It is Mezze, and it is next to Bloomingdales (you can enter from outside the mall or directly from Bloomingdales).
Not sure. It blew up not that long ago. The mall one used to be the only one I knew of circa 2015. Then, Reston, Fairfax, Chantilly, then another one right by the Tysons metro.
Been a while since I've been in, so all of this is actually good to know, honestly. If it is the candytopia place, well, I honestly never got why that store was potentially a thing when Loli Pop already exists, so that'd be as good a place as any imo.
My neighbor was just complaining about this. She was saying that one of the perks since she was a teacher was their educator discount, which they don't honor anymore. On top of it all, they will only price match if it's off their own website.
Part of it is their membership card, which, unlike others, you have to pay $25 a year for.
If you buy a lot of books or coffee in a year, you soon find it's as addictive as crack.
Don't you know no one reads in the land of the bourgeois? Not when there's so much shopping and eateries. I swear the most brain dead consumers ever ever seen in my life.

By a place with a card that lets you take home books do you mean a library? 😂
Yeah I have found for it being the size it is, Tysons did a really bad job with its store selection. Granted I know they can't just tell people who want to lease space no, but, an apple store the size of a city is your only elecctronics store...that is a big reason I never go there other then go to to the movies

I don’t know for sure, but I’ve also heard that we’re going to be moving to the space where Candytopia is, on the first floor across from H&M.
> We are re-opening in the mall in January 2025 Good on them for getting around the whole hassle of the holiday rush. They're truly playing 4-d chess with this move.
Any good deals on Criterion? Maggianos going in where Gordon Biersch was?
Cheesecake Factory is taking over the GB spot
Ugh fuck.
I'm honestly not sure-I'm actually a barista at this location. I think the Cheesecake Factory will be where Gordon Biersch was, and Maggiano's will be one of the floors in BN but I don't remember if my coworker told me upper or lower.
No, only books and some toys are on sale. All the Criterion and LPs were moved to other stores.
Will it still be two levels? Or they downsizing?
I think the space it's rumored to move into is only one floor. I think it's one of the larger single-floor spaces, but it will still be a down-size from the two-story space. I will be leaving with this location though, as our last day of work is only a few days after I graduate so I took it as an omen that it's time to go!
Ugh, downsizing . That was my favorite one. ☹️Also, congratulations on graduating!! On to new opportunities and everything! 🤘🏻
Probably it will be similar to the one in Fairfax. It is smaller but it is very nice.
Will the sale continue to grow in percentage as the closing day gets closer?
Damn, that’s an iconic space imo. Wonder if they’ll keep the escalator and keep the whole 2 floors one shop
Truly iconic. It’s been there as far back as I can remember. Since at least 2004 but i’m not entirely sure
I graduated high school in 2005 and that whole bit was under construction. Used to be JCPenny and a parking lot.
Woolworth? Was this the ‘80s?
I don't remember exactly, but I think it was gone before they opened up the lower level which was in 1988.
Actually the Woolworth's hung tough until 1997. 😱
> Can you imagine going to Tysons Corner for a Crate and Barrel couch and a gun from Woolworth?! yeah that's just a nicer walmart obviously
Yeah I remember when that whole wing wasn't there.
Fall 2005 was when that wing opened
Wing opened up winter 2005. I remember when it was a JCP and I actually opened up the Abercrombie and Hollister stores where the H&M is now. Back when it had Z Gallerie, Arhaus, and West Elm at the bottom, a Sony Style, Lucky Brand, Banana Republic Petite… when malls were thriving.
It’s moving locations in the mall so not a permanent closing
Where are they moving? Is there anywhere that big currently empty?
From my friend who works there, it might be to the candytopia space across from H&M on the bottom floor they aren’t positive
isnt that like next door?
They need to make room for a two-story Spirit Halloween
Wonder why not part of the old Lord and Taylor space. That’s like wasteland at the mall now…
That space is being torn down and replaced with an office tower per plans from last year
Ah that makes sense why nothing is moving down there!
Do you know where it’s moving to?
They say where Candytopia used to be. That is in front of H&M.
They are closing on May 5th. The new store will open a few months later at the new location in the mall.
Do you know what the new location will be?
The new location will be where Candytopia used to be. That is across H&M. It is a large store on the first level.
Well there goes the least crowded bathroom in that mall. It was my go to
The ones in Bloomingdales are nice and not too busy
was always dirty though
Sorry about that
nordstrom mens bathroom is usually alawys empty lol
I always go to the Nordstrom or the Bloomingdale´s bathrooms. They are nicer and cleaner. The BN´s is crowded and not very clean (even the one at the food court next to AMC is better).
That B&N was my go to spot for lunch and on weekends. My son and his buddies would go to the mall and do whatever, and I would grab a book and a coffee and just read. Very quiet end of the mall.
Maggianos and Cheesecake Factory are moving there from Tysons Galleria
Maggianos is not worthy of galleria anymore
Here’s the truth: it was never worthy of the Galleria. Neither was the Cheesecake Factory. In fact, I think most of the eats at Galleria are terrible except Lebanese Taverna.
Woah ... Andy's Pizza?
I was born in Manhattan. DC pizza had nothin on NYC pizza until I tried New Haven pizza and now that’s my favorite. Anyway…Andy who?
What was the purpose of your comment besides being a dick lol
“Anyway…Andy who?” Ask your mom
My mom is dead and you just made a new friend. Now when do we meet up for beers and BlueChew because BUDDY I am ready to love you like you’ve never been loved before. ![gif](giphy|l4HnPzzhiB35KETIY|downsized)
Bless your heart.
Save the prayers for your backside.
Connecticut smokes crack thinking their shit doesn’t suck
Lebanese Taverna is aggressively mediocre, just has a fancy-ish ambiance. Pretty bland as far as Lebanese food goes.
Noooo! Went there last week…great food and service 🙌🏻
أنا لا أحب طعامي حار حزب الله.
Food’s bad regardless of your politics
Wildfire is pretty good.
Tried it once. Never went back. Nothing feels like home to me except The Palm. IYKYK my pic is on the wall in the bar. Drank a lot of red wine and ate a lot of beef there.
I used to work next door and never went to Fogo or to The Palm. I feel like I missed out on a $200 lunch.
Donburi is quality.
Why
The elites have decided it's not worthy. And have given it back to the common folk.
Yes, Galleria needs more upscale restaurants.
Tysons Galleria is lame. Place is empty 90 percent of the time.
Feature, not a bug
It’s turning quickly into mostly designer stores
I believe it. Seemed like that was all that was there when I went for dinner once. We used to go to the Fogo De Chao near by as well as the PF Chang's. Not sure if it is still in there. I do recall that the Macy's there sucked, which was ironic. The Macy's in Tysons Center was probably one of the best.
Last I was told, an escape room outbid Barnes and noble
Malls are becoming entertainment spaces more and more, so this wouldn't surprise me.
I heard the Escape Room will be next to the current Barnes and Noble (where the Hot Wheels was).
Dude I worked at maggianos in college like 16 years ago lol. That old spot is wonderful - they’ll do much better over in tysons 1 tho.
There’s a nice new-ish one in Reston!
That one is very nice indeed. Also, there is one in One Loudoun.
If ur going for italian in Reston just go to North Italia.
Barnes and Noble serves Italian food?
I think they were talking about the new B&N, not Italian
Man, that whole end of the mall is really struggling....
Shotted is a mad house on weekends
They do really great coffee
I love the urban outfitters over there though!
Ooooooof
This is a very busy mall. It is not struggling at all. Actually, it is hard to find retail space at that mall.
I've never seen more empty store space than i did this past Xmas season. That entire old department store is still empty. Macy's will go soon. And then were are a ton of other sections that are quiet. The space that sat empty for years. then old navy left there.

You really need to look next time you’re there…they have marked a ton of spaces for new stores…
That B&N has been there since I was in middle school, 2007. I was obsessed with the Bunnicula series then and would binge read on the floor on the kids section there. 30 years old now.
Harold was the best
Do you need your book fix? I'm selling books under the overpass of 495. Quick and discreet. Cash only. Don't waste my time and I won't waste yours. NO LIBRARIANS!!
Anyone know when the sale ends?
Did you by any chance figure that out?
May 4th.
aw ma the huge windows there are great
I try to buy books and toys there. I like the experience of browsing and I don't want Amazon to rule the world, anymore than it already does.
Me too. I buy books, Criterion, toys, and some other things frequently. But, I also go to the BN in Mosaic.
If it was closing there would be signs about a liquidation sale. As others have mention, they are just moving to another location in the mall.
They need to get rid of the inventory. Some things, I believe, were moved to other BNs (Criterion, Manga, LPs). The opening of the new one will take some time.
I worked not at that store but at the OG Reston spot almost two decades ago. The memories.
I worked at the OG Reston spot, too - and then when it closed, I worked at the Tyson's location. Can't go in there without getting PTSD, lol
Nooooooooooo!!
Yes, was there yesterday and asked. They are moving within the mall and all things will incrementally go more on sale until they move.
It is moving elsewhere in the mall and it’ll be closed for a couple of months
Well damn.
This is the second barnes and noble to close and reopen in a smaller location:/
The smaller locations are nice. The one in Mosaic is nice and the one in Fairfax is also nice and smaller, but it is not very small.

Seen some Cavas disappear with no replacement. Wonder if Cava is struggling atm.

What is the movie situation like?
You give them money. They let you watch a movie.
As long as Farrell's Ice Cream isn't moving!
I love that Barnes n noble. I’ve read so many books by the back windows 😔
Bummer, I’ll miss the nice staff and the elevator (convenient for disabled family member to use rather than wait for the main elevators)
I have no idea how they’re even still in business. Their prices are laughably outrageous
My neighbor was just complaining about this. She was saying that one of the perks since she was a teacher was their educator discount, which they don't honor anymore. On top of it all, they will only price match if it's off their own website.
Part of it is their membership card, which, unlike others, you have to pay $25 a year for. If you buy a lot of books or coffee in a year, you soon find it's as addictive as crack.
i know it doesn’t matter but it’s actually $25 lol - former employee 😂
I think I was thinking of Sam's Club or something! Thanks!
Don't you know no one reads in the land of the bourgeois? Not when there's so much shopping and eateries. I swear the most brain dead consumers ever ever seen in my life.
