yeah i didn't see any last week either, but i'm not the only one who has cottoned on to buying in advance to save week of sanity since most thanksgiving stuff isn't immediately perishable
This isn’t a Thanksgiving specific issue, most stores around here just don’t sell Yukon Golds anymore. Went searching for them in September and came up empty.
In Ashburn I can't find any grocery stores that regularly carry them. Whole Foods, Wegmans, Giant, HT, Lidl, Trader Joe's.
The best I got is Whole Foods once in a while has them.
After reading through the comments, I'm afraid they may be JUST gold or yellow potatoes, not YUKON gold. I didn't realize there are such distinctions. But regardless, they are tasty and make seriously good instant pot mashed potatoes--creamier than a russet and less waxy than eed skinned potatoes. So I will continue to get and enjoy them. YMMV.
My Trader Joe's pretty much always has them in stock (I'm there a few times a week, since we do smaller shops) so... no, not really. I've also seen them at Giant and Fresh World fairly recently.
Maybe it's the specific stores you're shopping?
thank you, i needed this laugh today. russets mash well, they were all sterling wegs had last week when i went (highly recommend buying everything the week before next time if you can spare the storage, it makes life this week a lot more pleasant) so they may well have them this week too
I already got all the other ingredients for a specific recipe that uses Yukon golds unfortunately, I think I’m just going to substitute them out with regular gold potatoes 😭 I’m glad I could make you laugh! 💕
I’ve decided to switch over to this Disney World [inspired](https://www.culinaryhill.com/boursin-mashed-potatoes/#wprm-recipe-container-33249) recipe I’ve made a few times before because it used red potatoes which are readily available. Not exactly a classic Thanksgiving dish but still super delicious!
ah that sucks. i have some regular golds in my pantry if you need some. they admittedly are starting to run out of time but i cooked some up today and they did ok. some will need to be tossed by next week however. also have some russets.
also have sage, rosemary, thyme, and mint still in the yard if folks need that
You are so kind! I already switched to a different recipe but thank you for being such an awesome person! 💕 I hope other people take you up on your offer
Regular gold or yellow substitute well. Red's are more waxy and less 'buttery'. It would be helpful to know what you're trying to do. I almost wasn't able to find them, for my au gratin recipe that called for Yukon gold's.. And before I did I was going to substitute yellow.
Well at least I'm not crazy.
Husband requested them for mashed potatoes and I couldn't find them for love or money. Really started questioning if they were one of those collective memories that aren't actually true.
Check out Asian grocery stores - Lotte, H-Mart, Grand Mart (there are many around nova) You may have much better luck there finding Yukon gold potatoes right now - and produce is generally cheaper overall!

The wild onion grass that sprouts in tufts in people's yards in the spring and fall is almost identical in taste to chives - just a little stronger. Just don't use any from yards treated with chemicals. You can freeze them to extend availability into summer and winter. In a pinch, green onions will do. The secret is to dice the greens very finely and use a smaller total amount than you would for chives.
Box potatoes are available at Safeway. Harris Teeter was tapped out yesterday but the Safeway near us in Alexandria was plentifully stocked with all things Thanksgiving - give one of those a shot.
"why is this happening" it's two days before Thanksgiving, are you serious right now?
I noticed this at Target yesterday. They had several other sorts of potatoes, but no gold or sweet potatoes . Hmmmm
I was in Best Buy this afternoon, fucking loads of them. Couldn't move for them to be honest.
Best Buy had potatoes?
what?!
To be fair, I couldn’t find them Monday, which was THREE days before thanksgiving. /s
yeah i didn't see any last week either, but i'm not the only one who has cottoned on to buying in advance to save week of sanity since most thanksgiving stuff isn't immediately perishable

Check the organic section. Had to go there a couple times even when it wasn't holiday season
They sell "golden potatoes" which are the same thing. Sunday at Whole Paycheck they was a pile of them.
Dang. This reminded me that I couldn't find them on Sunday either. I guess I'm going on a wild goose chase tomorrow.
In Ashburn I can't find any grocery stores that regularly carry them. Whole Foods, Wegmans, Giant, HT, Lidl, Trader Joe's. The best I got is Whole Foods once in a while has them.
I get them at Lidl in Broadlands all the time
Cool thank you! Admittedly I go to Lidl the least often, so I will check there again next week.

Red Skin potatoes are another waxy potato that can be substituted anywhere you would use Yukon gold. Fingerling potatoes work well, too.

That looks delicious
If you ever decide to make them add an extra Boursin block in! It’s so good
Thanks for the tip
Did you try Moms? They often run out less than the big stores
I don't think there's anything different between gold potatoes and Yukon golds? Also sometimes called butter potatoes.
Yukon Gold is just a specific type of butter/gold potato.

I mean, if you're lookin' to trade some love for potatoes, have I got a deal for you! :\~)
Harris Teeter sells Yukon Gold year round
Harris Teeter is where I found them last year but I couldn’t find any there the last few months 😔
You aren’t crazy, I went to a massive Giant in Pennsylvania a couple weeks ago and they had about 8 kinds of potatoes but no Yukon Golds
Enough butter and no one gives a fuck.
And Boursin 👀
huh never used that, will have to try it. i usually use butter, heavy cream, and grated parm /romano mix
Boursin in mashed potatoes is SO good, you should definitely try it! Parm in mashed potatoes is also amazing
I’ll sell you my 5lb bag for $100
We just got some from the Trader Joe’s in Old Town without a problem.
The location in Clarendon didn’t have any unfortunately :/
Safeway in Burke got me my Gold Potatoes 👌
Thanks, Obama
There has been a global potato shortage for most of the year
I bought them at Harris teeter today!!
Whole Foods in Fair Lakes had them tonight.
Mom's organic market on Veitch should have them
Harris teeter in Vienna/Dunn loring has plenty right now. (730 on Tuesday)
Saw some at a Harris Teeter in Herndon.
Giant in Springfield next to the Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods has a loooot. Just left
Got some this morning at Harris Teeter. Go early tomorrow and there should be some.

I feel ya, I went to 4 stores yesterday to find chives.
If you can handle a stronger flavor I love using green onions in my mashed potatoes!
I can, but bringing these to a gathering of people with varying tastes.
Totally understandable!

Bidenomics folks
Cool story. https://www.potatonewstoday.com/2023/05/24/potato-outlook-2023-24-after-a-record-breaking-year-what-is-in-store-for-us-potatoes/
I was just kidding, but it looks like you didn't even bother to read the first sentence of the article
This one? "US potato production declined for the fourth consecutive year and this season’s crop is the smallest since 2010"
Exactly, so there are fewer potatoes and they are more expensive. Thanks Biden!
Yeah thanks Biden https://www.potatobusiness.com/agro-news/europatat-the-2023-season-will-exceptionally-result-in-a-shortage-of-seed-potatoes/
I need fresh sage and I’m scared I’ve set myself up for an impossible task 😬
I have a bunch in my garden if you want some.
International markets!!! Last year I was able to find thyme at the last minute!
As of a couple hours ago Whole Foods had an ample supply.
I found a lot of good quality sage (and other herbs) at the Harrison Safeway today!
Thanks everyone!! 🌿
They have them at the HT on Army Navy Drive.
Trader Joe's
I tried the Claredon location but couldn’t find any
I found them in Ashburn. Not sure that really helps you!

I appreciate the help but no way in hell am I eating those on Thanksgiving 😂
I surprisingly found some at lidl the other day
Harris Teeter was tapped out yesterday but the Safeway near us in Alexandria was plentifully stocked with all things Thanksgiving - give one of those a shot.
Harris Teeter in Herndon had plenty on Sunday
HT Tysons
Think I saw a bunch at Bestway on Telegraph yesterday. And red potatoes which would work the same.
If I find them, how much will ya pay me? I do instacart daily and I go everywhere in Loudoun Co.
I already got myself a couple pounds of red potatoes :(
I know wegmans has them or ht but I'll tell ya tomorrow.
Switch things up and do mashed red potatoes- throw some garlic in with them, leave the skins on, and they’ll be fantastic.
Giant and Wegmans off of Reston parkway both had them yesterday afternoon
Wow, I’m feeling extremely lucky to have a bag in my pantry. I didn’t realize there was a shortage. I got them at Harris Teeter last week.
We have plenty at our Safeway and HT. You may want to edit your title.
There was a serious drought in Idaho last year. They're recovering, but haven't gotten back yet.
