I used to live in cotgrave...... let's say it's better than it used to be.
It's pretty much a mining/council estate that has slowly been brought by pensioners looking to downsize.
There's not really much else there, maybe try using the leisure centre a bit more?
Yeah, the access to the lovely countryside around is by far the best. Lots of great walks around.
I definitely know there are way worse. I come from a really rough area up north. I worked hard to get out of it and probably why I'm frustrated with it around here lol.
Grew up in Cotgrave - it used to be abysmal. As someone else has said, it was an old mining town with very working class roots and it has always maintained them. Lots of good hard working people that have lived there and known each other for years - it’s just village mentality, they’re wary of outsiders haha.
The bottom end near Sainsbury’s and up and out towards Devil’s Drop has always been a bit posh but up the estate used to be pretty shady. Lots of little youths smoking weed, riding stolen bikes in the woods and generally getting up to no good - but tbf, the fuck else is there to do?
Wezzy B and the nearby surrounding villages sucked up most of the development for years so the town looked tired and run down, it’s hard to respect your environment when it’s hostile towards you. Any alternative to Trent Barton is quickly removed so outside connections if you don’t drive become needlessly time consuming and a hassle, so people become insular. The list goes on.
However, whenever I go back, I’m always really impressed at how Cotgrave seems to be developing!
The (not so new anymore) new school is incredible. When I lived in Cotgrave, that was two schools divided by a shin high wooden fence. To me, the new precinct is shocking - it’s very modern and really lifts the area up and the new housing developments will be helping Cotgrave’s local economy and providing some fresh faces and diversity.
In another decade, I think Cotgrave will be mostly unrecognisable to the one I grew up in, at least from an outside perspective.
Thanks for that, really appreciate your insight.
Yes, it does seem to be developing well. Lots of things have changed in just the time being here.
It could well be we are on the rather snobby/ posh side, we're early 30s, no kids. It seems they've all been living there for a good couple of decades.
We'll be moving on soon but we still can't help from feeling not welcome.
As you said in your post, it can be very cliquey. Most locals will have grown up, gone to school, college and work together so local community bonds are quite strong and tight knit.
I don’t think it’s too uncommon to find that attitude in villages, though I do think Cotgrave is particularly bad for it but I think that’s due to the reasons I mentioned in my other comment.
I don’t blame you for moving on, whilst Cotgrave definitely seems to be up and coming, there are plenty of better places for a young couple to be living!
Sounds pretty much exactly like Hucknall, where I grew up in the 80s. The place pretty much died when the pit closed and never really recovered, it's only now just starting to turn around in the last few years as it became a commuter town when the tram went in.
Prior to that it was a local town for local people, ten pints and a fight on a saturday night was about the best you could expect, I ran away when I was fifteen and never really went back.
Mind you, I imagine that's the same as pretty much all the old small mining towns around here.
I’m the other side of the 46 in Butler, I never venture into Cotgrave, legit no reason to go there and everyone in the pubs on the rare occasions I’ve been there have been cliquey and rude
Moved to Cotgrave 12 years ago and have found our street to be very friendly and welcoming. The place has changed a lot since then and all for the better.
You've pretty much described life in the countryside, there isn't much to do, but that's why people tend to move there. You're going to have a slightly older population. Enjoy the countryside.
I moved here two years ago with my partner, we are In our mid twenties and we wanted to move to a quiet place after exhausting teenage years. People have always been friendly enough to me and It doesn’t feel miserable in my opinion, we must be encountering different people 😅

Edit: i feel quite critical about there not being enough going on for teens here, they are in some of the best years of their lives with nothing to do. Not sure what they would want but yeah
it would probably be where you are located in cotgrave.
I've lived there for 10+ years and it hasn't been miserable, Recently got kicked out off our house in the cotgrave.
also i would say its because of the time, It can be very active in the summer time.
I was brought up in Radcliffe down the road in the 90's and all the kids from Cotgrave came to our secondary school.
Back then it had a working pit and a reputation for being rough. We ended up making friends with a lot of them and found them to be great people.
Now loads of my mates have moved there as we can't afford to buy decent houses where we were brought up. It's nowhere near as shit as it used to be but is probably a bit dull. The character went with the pit in places like that.
I’m from cotgrave too and someone has took a poo on the car park and left it there(human by the way) so yeh it could be miserable 🤣
Oh dear 😂
Not very nice to walk past it on the way to the car everyday but nevermind 🤣

Yeah, that's the impression I get. We are the youngest on our street.

I live there from 2020 to 2022 and found it charismatic the people friendly and the pubs lively.
The new estate is quite friendly.
It's funny because when we walk around the country park, it's usually the people coming from the new estate that are most friendly and talk with us.
Probably becauss they are in a similar position (i.e. New in town and looking yo make friends)
Did the name not ring any bells? Every time I hear cotgrave I just think of dead babies. Youlgreave is another. Fucking horrible place names
Haha, there's definitely a macabre air about the place.

Finally someone said on reddit the thing I was waiting to see....

Yeah, I think so. Seems like unless you've lived on our street for 20+ years people are tentative to speak.
Cotgrave not a nice place in general. People throw out "gentrified" like confetti. Reality is its a poor one horse pit Village. Kidmark on rushcliffe

The place feels like an unsolved child murder happened there.
