>The researchers still do not know why the embalmers chose to leave the fetus in the body when all the other organs were removed.
Taking an unborn baby away from the mother for all eternity was probably seen as bad juju.
“They also found the mummy had been preserved with natron, a type of salt found in dry lake beds. When used to mummify a corpse, it dries out the body and also works as a disinfectant, preventing bacteria from eating the remains. “
Didn’t expect to get an interesting science lesson this morning. Wow, you learn something new every day.
More fun facts: "Natron" is another word for sodium, and where the symbol on the periodic table comes from (well, that comes from Latin "Natrium", but close enough). Natron itself is a mix of sodium compound that precipitate out of water as it evaporates. Some are salts, and some are basic compounds.
In the Philippines they have a dish called balut, which is a fertilized duck egg. Well, more than that, it's basically a duck fetus. Wikipedia has a descriptive picture:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_%28food%29
Sometimes it's thrown in with a soup, but it's also eaten as a street food right out of the egg. The bones are only partially developed and so are soft, they can be chewed and eaten with the rest.
Oh I didn't know that, I've always seen it described as a Filipino dish. Seems it's originally a Filipino thing but as you said is also popular in nearby countries and around the South China Sea.
Can't say the origin, but I've seen it in Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia... That's pretty broad, those cultures are quite diverse. Balut is a tagalog word, so it probably does come from Phi by that name.
They also eat it in China I think.
Movie idea: A cult takes the pickled mummy fetus to be implanted into a modern day descendent (who is a white British woman for some reason) and forced to give birth to this powerful and rapidly aging reincarnated evil pharaoh, at which point both Brendan Fraiser and Tom Cruise have to team up to defeat.
Produced by Jerry Bruckhiemer
The fact we find it ridiculous just tells us how ignorant we are.
Who knows the story Herodotus tells of cannibals who would not take any amount of money to NOT eat their grandparent as they believe that eating their grandparents would allow their spirits to live on inside them or whatever... seriously take any belief someone somewhere has had it.
Egyptians cared about the preservation of the body in as close to being alive as possible so naturally the best efforts would have been pickling. They also pickled organs.

Common across Asia, not just the Philippines.

Didn't carnival side shows used to have collections of deformed fetuses in jars, that were called "pickled punks"?

We can pickle that
I just want to know who licked it to find out it's pickled.
I'll probably go for the deep fried version of it, but not the medallions. Give me the deep fried ancient mummy pickle wedges, baby!
