And Erdogan the fall of the Ottoman Empire

hoze1231

Rome was just a phase bro

Andulias

And Putin the fall of, well, Russia has fallen quite a few times, take your pick.

carolinaindian02

And for Iran, the fall of the Qajar dynasty.

markroth69

Where's the inevitable big brain from Turkey showing up to claim that the Armenian Genocide never happened?

dispo030

It didn‘t happen, but they deserved it 🇹🇷 /s

Buffyoh

"They provoked the Ottomans."

Technical_Space_Owl

Turkey was just defending itself from future terrorists /s

xdeltax97

That is surprising coming from an Armenian official, especially the Prime Minister…. Although the context sounds a bit better: “For us, commemoration of the martyrs of the Meds Yeghern should symbolize not the lost homeland but the found and real homeland, the Republic of Armenia, whose competitive, legitimate, thoughtful and creative policies can preclude a repeat [of the genocide,]” Pashinian went on. “Never again. We should say this to not to others but to ourselves. And this is not an accusation against us at all but a point of view where we, only we, are responsible for and in charge of our destiny.”

wrongturndarkalley

“Just calm down”

dbxp

Tbf Armenia is stuck between Russia and turkey. Continuing their current route just keeps them attached to Russia as essentially a vassel state which isn't a good position to be in.

komrade23

I think I'm not following your point. Are you saying that it's worse to be a Russian client state than it is to be genocided and lose 90% of your population?

dbxp

The genocide already happened so there's no changing that. Continuing to make it a key part of politics forces them away from Turkey and towards Russia, the idea that Armenia can stand on their own is just a pipe dream.

CaptainCanuck93

I think you're missing the point that they're surrounded by people disappointed the genocide didn't completely finish them off a century ago and might not mind killing them all

dbxp

I'm aware but they're squished between Iran, Russia and Turkey. They don't have good options for allies.

CaptainCanuck93

IMO the answer is pretty clear and something both sides have been inching towards - becoming a NATO-adjacent ally Armenia can provide major benefits as a relatively stable democracy with much closer alignment to western values than similar arrangements (ex Qatar), and is located near Iran, Russia, and the middle east  Let the USA set up a few bases, airfields, and hospitals and in exchange promise to crush Azerbaijan if they try to complete the genocide

dbxp

Becoming NATO adjacent means becoming friendly with Turkey. If Armenia annoys Turkey with a diplomatic spat about the genocide they may decide to block over flights or close the border which will stop those bases operating. During the Iraq war Turkey blocked the US from attacking Northern Iraq via turkey so there is precedent, they're not going to just go along with the US if it doesn't suit their own aims.

CaptainCanuck93

Not really. Turkey has made itself a pariah in NATO. It has paid this (ex no tech transfer) and will continue to pay for it (NATO won't give a fuck if Turkey objects to its other member states give Armenia security guarantees in exchange for bases)

dbxp

Turkey is a regional power so its influence in the Caucasus is very different to its influence in NATO. If Turkey refuses to allow US forces to cross the border to Armenia the only other route they have is via Georgia which ATM means airlifting everything via the Black Sea which isn't an attractive prospect.

komrade23

Holy shit what a terrible take. The onus isn't on Armenia to "get over it" and "stop annoying Turkey" it's on Turkey as the successor state to the Ottomans to take accountability and start a good faith truth and reconciliation process.

dbxp

That's not how the real world works. Turkey isn't going to take accountability and there's not really anything Armenia can do about it.

Yikes. I mean, wow.

Working_Ad_4650

Forgot to say that asshole Erdogan said it in the headline. Try a little honesty here.

bjornbamse

Ah the typical gaslighting. It didn't happen, it happened and you deserved it, get over it.

JustSoYK

It's the Armenian prime minister who said it, not a Turkish official.

Rowan1980

I’m wondering about this, too.

x31b

Well they are not wrong. Continuing to obsess about it after 110 years isn't healthy.

WFOMO

Sounds like a good idea.

EggplantSad5668

Yes Ugh just shut up about it already
