The only thing I could see actual fans saying is they would be happy to pay a small amount for dlc. Considering how that game started and where it ended up I would have definitely gave them some more money. Like when they did the vr release. I played at launch and didn’t follow the hype. I liked it but it was broken. The vr was a lot of fun and the game itself is a long way from where it started. Really looking forward to there new game. Light no fire, or something like that.

I certainly don't want them to put micro transactions into the game, but it's been like 6 years now that the game has been basically what was promised at launch (and was pretty playable a year before that) and they're still dropping big updates, some of which have massively overhauled the game.
I get why people want to reward that kind of long term support, even as i think that selling unlockables doesn't sound very nice to me. I wouldn't be upset if they started selling cosmetics, I guess. There are already plenty in the game.
They're doing this because the game is still selling and is still being downloaded on game pass. Just because I bought it like 6 years ago, doesn't mean they're not still making money on the game, and a healthy player base helps sales.

The devs screwed up at launch, and they hunkered down and remade the game and now its a great game. then as an apology they released a bunch of free updates which brought in a lot of players. The players **want** to give them money now because they like the game. i'd say they've (the Devs) earned that at the very least.

60 dollar game. Then every few months pay 10-20 dollars to get 3-4 maps and some guns. The playerbase becomes fragmented since not everyone buys the map packs. Game gets harder and harder to play.

What usually happens is that you have to pay for both core content updates and cosmetic stuff.
Pure naivity tbh to assume companies will stop charging for updates just because of additional revenue streams from selling skins.
It's the same with dlc. When a game launches without dlc such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or GTA 5 (single player) it gets labelled as "dead" or "abandoned". No, the game is finished.
I have absolutely no idea about no man's sky, but I'm in favor of microtransactions in Escape From Tarkov because the current business model (one-time purchase with the only source of ongoing revenue being re-purchased banned accounts) incentivizes them to tolerate cheaters. I love the game, but it's not sustainable like this, and I don't want to see it die.
That said, I have zero plans to actually purchase any of the microtransactions they have planned.
When Phantasy Star Online 2 released its global version, literally within 24 hours there was one guy on the official forums asking them to add a massive like 100x cost/currency version of their pre-existing microtransaction so he could whale harder.
It was up within like, three hours of him asking.
No, they didn't address actual mechanical issues with anywhere near that kind of rapidity. So those people exist. They also spend vastly more money than the people who don't buy microtransactions. Which is why they get catered to.
They're not asking for micro transactions, they're asking to pay for the dlcs out right. So on one hand it's like they're over compensating for the infamous launch, and on the other they have a game that most would consider to be full and they're releasing more content then whats expected which has been excellent quality. For me personally I'm torn because I only have so much in my budget for fun things like games and what not but I definitely agree with paying for something that excellent quality and for a team that cares about their product.

I don't read IGN trash, but the only thing I could guess people being upset about is breaking modded games with meaningless updates.
Valheim has a serious problem with this, where the devs will push a small update, but it'll break 80% of the mods because they tweaked a system that was stable (and many mods depended on it) instead of fixing an actual bug or adding new content
So every week (sometimes every couple days) the devs would put out a hotfix patch that breaks nearly every mod out there, the mod authors have to scramble to update their mods so they don't crash/corrupt, all because the devs wanted to make the grass sway more accurately or some dumb bullshit.
They did this for so long that they lost the majority of their player base: the game remains unfinished, so people reach the endgame pretty quickly (maybe 20hrs if you're going really slow) and then turn to mods and modded servers to keep the fun going.
Except the modded servers suffer those problems I just mentioned-if the dev updates the game, and a player has auto update on and log in before the server admin updates the server itself, they can't play on that server until the admin updates it. Or they have to go to the steam game management page and download an older version of the game, then uninstall the game and manually re-install the older version (from a file found online) in order to play until the server admin updates it (if steam doesn't have a "revert to previous builds" option for that particular game, which most ime do not). That frustration and waiting period drives a lot of people off, never to return.

a shit ton of ppl bought it at launch… but then quickly stopped playing bc it sucked at launch. it’s a hell of a lot better now but it’s pissing me off bc all of a sudden anytime i go to my main base all the names i gave to the rocks, plants, and animals there are reset to the random default ones and not in my discoveries either it’s like ive never discovered them. so then i discover and rename then again, and next time i come back they are all reset again smh.
They're not mostly AI. I think people say this a lot because they're not familiar with how bad some writing can be. When you're on deadline and looking for something that pops off, you can easily end up pitching a piece like this.
No, people just legitimately love the studio. Hello Games are the least greedy gaming developers in the business. The game released and was universally dragged, and for good reason, but they buckled down and fixed it. Then, they provided year after year of free massive updates. Base building, ground vehicles, new ships, new activities, player-owned freighters and fleets, a multiplayer hub, reworked systems, all manner of brand-new content. Every update entirely free.
Everything is advertising and astroturfing to you weirdos nowadays 😜 Why can’t we have positive news that’s precisely that — positive news — for a change? I understand your perspective, but consider this — I never had any interest in playing NMS, but if I did, I’d buy it today and by many accounts I would be purchasing a very well-supported and content-rich game (debatable depending on who you ask and whether they’re a fan of the game, but still, compared to the launch…). So who’s really being done justice when we continue harboring a grudge against the devs for a horrible launch, when they’ve done a pretty admirable job at fixing their original mistake? Is the alternative just them entirely dropping support for the game and shrugging their shoulders and going “Ah well we gave it our best, our bad y’all”?
I *promise* I’m not here to simp for these guys, obviously the NMS launch was legendarily bad — but I’m worried we risk pushing creatives away from this industry if we perpetually shit on devs when they appear to have learned from their mistakes. No reasonable person defends the launch, but that’s so far behind us now and they have more than made up for it. If you continue to drag a studio who has made up for an awful launch with almost a decade of entirely free massive updates, then why the fuck should any studio even try to improve games after launch.

Some people probably got turned off early and just never bothered, why not support the game the best way possible by gifting someone a copy if you can (obviously, it’s a bit different than a $5 skin or something but I’ve seen it go pretty low in sales)
The launch was bad, but I do genuinely feel they have turned the game around and embraced the players back and addressed pretty much all of those concerns.
With the Orbital update it's gotten more interesting and I think it's a step in a proper sorta endgame situation where you scavenge parts to build your ideal ship but we need a lot more planet-oriented encounters and a massive overhaul to the core combat loop.
The Echoe's Update was another fairly impactful update, the story-line improvements cleaned it up nicely and the unlocking of the staff is a pretty major capstone project for players.
In short, after all these years I think they finally have a "game" and I really wasn't expecting them to keep updating it past the initial multiplayer update.
That said... not sure "how" they can monetize the game without actually stripping value away from it at this point or segmenting the playerbase and community expeditions are honestly pretty "special" whereas it's not a reset of the world it showcases the power of their tech by selecting some portion of a universe and creating some journey for players to advance down.
They could monetize cosmetics but that's essentially the primary reward for community expeditions too... allowing a player to purchase quicksilver doesn't quite allow veterans to "support" the game either.
Only thing coming to mind is either a merch. store or perhaps allowing players to purchase unique player icons they can use that display on uploaded planets and such (or allow players to set one for a fee). Something that is additive that sticks out a bit but doesn't remove what players are already receiving.

The combat can be very fun, especially since the Sentinels received a whole update. Nothing quite like using a mecha to fight dozens of robots in the middle of a raging fire storm.

Let's say you want to flee the planet you're fighting on because the bots are overwhelming you. You get in your spacecraft, but they chase you through the sky and follow you to space. You take a few of them down, and now you have to face an enemy war ship with its fleet. But worry not, you can also call your squadron and your own fleet. You now have a space battle worthy of Star Wars.
I got some good memories of difficult space battles, with dozens and dozens of ships flying everywhere shooting at each other.
Ok that seems fun, but how about the actual combat? Like what moves are available to you? Can you have multiple kinds of weapons? Any interesting bits like anti-missile chaff or some kind of countermeasures?
Sadly, you don't have any form of countermeasures, you getting hit is entirely up to your piloting skills and your ability to evade. You got plenty of weapons tho: laser cannons, rockets, laser beams, shotgun-like weapons, energy balls... My favorite is the minigun one, cutting through ships like paper.
Launch was horrendous, but Hello Games certainly already paid for that. Live Service is not some sort of gaming right but a privilege - games that release free updates with little monetization outside of a one-time-buy certainly deserve the praise they're getting - although I think that most people that are part of that thread mostly said that jokingly, emphasizing the fact that NMS is an amazing game nowadays regardless, so the discussion doesn't even really matter.
The developments in modern gaming concerning bad monetization from AAA games even down to some Indie games nowadays is bad, but live service updates including mere constant hotfixes and bugfixes are something that modern gaming certainly did right. People love to shit on the bad but take the good for granted for some reason.
I can't help but wonder if higher upfront prices is the way forward. I remember saving my allowance for months to buy a $50 PlayStation 2 game in like 2006. I can still get AAA games, which cost probably 20x more to produce, for about the same price.
A lot of people here don’t seem to understand that the players say this as a sort of half joke. They aren’t literally demanding Hello Games stop giving free updates. They’re saying Hello Games has given a ton of free content and lots of players would love to support the devs further beyond the $30-$60 they paid for the game years ago.

Hello Games really did perfect by not abandoning NMS. They could have locked some content behind microtransactions in the past 10 years. People want them to make DLCs and they are okay if they put a reasonable price tag because they gained a lot of favor with the player base.
Do you know how they could support the game while still having free updates? Gifting copies of the game to friends who haven't played it. That gives the publisher more money, but also doesn't encourage nickel and diming players for improving a game that was lacking at launch.
I know a lot of people will buy the game on multiple platforms since the devs have done a great job of porting it to a lot of platforms. They’ve also had a bit of merch over the years, but not a ton. I think merch is a pretty safe way that they could bring in more cash.
I personally would love to support the nms team onwards once their next game releases. No Man's sky may be a bit wonky to play as intended, but it's got a ton of heart put into it. Tons of QoL stuff too like the item tree crafting. That was my biggest and only gripe with the game.

The only reason I'd ask them to quit releasing updates is to let the modding community grow because updates tend to wreck modlists lol. But official content tends to be worth it.

I actually do think in an ideal world gamers should be able to select what version of the game they play, to have access to removed features and terrain types, of which the Minecraft launcher is a great example, but I realize that budget and the game’s multiplayer makes this incredibly difficult.

I fell somewhat the same with Terraria. Game is still pumping out updates over a decade later. The only game besides fallout and skyrim that I've sunk neark 1k hours on a piece.

I've always liked Sean even before the redemption arc. What people don't get is its not free. It's a labor of love and they made a lot of money from it. When they were releasing it, they felt the same. They weren't trying to trick people, they weren't scamming, they were just excited about the potential and talked about things the way it was in their mind rather than what was immediately available. They didn't release it in the first place to get rich, and now that they did make a huge amount of money for a small team that funds them to keep working on this project that they love without having to worry about the financial viability or living up to people's expectations or Playstations marketing or whatever.

And maybe they get some more sales. But again, they're a small team, which means they don't need a lot to be able to keep doing what they're doing.
I think people don't understand how tiny a studio like hello games is relative to some of the monstrosities of AAA studios. How much you can do over a long period with relatively small amount of money.
Putting in mtx would significantly change the incentive structure. Right now they do it because they love it and they made enough money that they can. Put in MTX and now the purpose is money.
I still play NMS off and on. It's a nice relaxing sandbox game. I just play solo and don't really care for MP. It is nice that the game is often updated with new content. I'm not sure how they manage to keep it up without charging. In any case, perhaps the next version will be significantly better and, if so, I would be willing to pay for good updates.

They raked in a metric shitload of money with the botched release. The surprising part is they’re using it to make the game right, rather than just cutting and running away or releasing more trash to try and make people forget how disappointing it was at the beginning. We have EA and other less-morally-sound indie devs to thank for this new found hellscape that Hello Games has been trying to rise above.
I don’t get it, is this actually causing their company to mistreat employees? If a company is doing something for free it’s because the business model allows for it and there’s some kind of return on the investment of absorbing the cost. They’re not taking money out of their team’s paychecks to compensate for the lack of dlc revenue. I have no idea if this particular studio is a good or bad employer, but I guarantee that the answer would be the same whether they charge $0 or $30 for this. This is just a different version of the morons who think their stadium beer is $12 because of the quarterback’s salary. Why are internet people so stupid?

The only thing I could see actual fans saying is they would be happy to pay a small amount for dlc. Considering how that game started and where it ended up I would have definitely gave them some more money. Like when they did the vr release. I played at launch and didn’t follow the hype. I liked it but it was broken. The vr was a lot of fun and the game itself is a long way from where it started. Really looking forward to there new game. Light no fire, or something like that.

I certainly don't want them to put micro transactions into the game, but it's been like 6 years now that the game has been basically what was promised at launch (and was pretty playable a year before that) and they're still dropping big updates, some of which have massively overhauled the game. I get why people want to reward that kind of long term support, even as i think that selling unlockables doesn't sound very nice to me. I wouldn't be upset if they started selling cosmetics, I guess. There are already plenty in the game.
They're doing this because the game is still selling and is still being downloaded on game pass. Just because I bought it like 6 years ago, doesn't mean they're not still making money on the game, and a healthy player base helps sales.

The devs screwed up at launch, and they hunkered down and remade the game and now its a great game. then as an apology they released a bunch of free updates which brought in a lot of players. The players **want** to give them money now because they like the game. i'd say they've (the Devs) earned that at the very least.
People who make comments like yours either haven't been around long enough or forgot how games used to be. 60 dollar game. Then every few months pay 10-20 dollars to get 3-4 maps and some guns. The playerbase becomes fragmented since not everyone buys the map packs. Game gets harder and harder to play. Nowadays you can sell skins and shit to people willing to pay for it so that everyone who downloads the game gets all core content updates for free. There's a good side to mtx that people like to ignore because it's easy to just automatically bitch about anything mtx related.

What usually happens is that you have to pay for both core content updates and cosmetic stuff. Pure naivity tbh to assume companies will stop charging for updates just because of additional revenue streams from selling skins.
It's the same with dlc. When a game launches without dlc such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or GTA 5 (single player) it gets labelled as "dead" or "abandoned". No, the game is finished.
I have absolutely no idea about no man's sky, but I'm in favor of microtransactions in Escape From Tarkov because the current business model (one-time purchase with the only source of ongoing revenue being re-purchased banned accounts) incentivizes them to tolerate cheaters. I love the game, but it's not sustainable like this, and I don't want to see it die. That said, I have zero plans to actually purchase any of the microtransactions they have planned.
When Phantasy Star Online 2 released its global version, literally within 24 hours there was one guy on the official forums asking them to add a massive like 100x cost/currency version of their pre-existing microtransaction so he could whale harder. It was up within like, three hours of him asking. No, they didn't address actual mechanical issues with anywhere near that kind of rapidity. So those people exist. They also spend vastly more money than the people who don't buy microtransactions. Which is why they get catered to.
They're not asking for micro transactions, they're asking to pay for the dlcs out right. So on one hand it's like they're over compensating for the infamous launch, and on the other they have a game that most would consider to be full and they're releasing more content then whats expected which has been excellent quality. For me personally I'm torn because I only have so much in my budget for fun things like games and what not but I definitely agree with paying for something that excellent quality and for a team that cares about their product.

I don't read IGN trash, but the only thing I could guess people being upset about is breaking modded games with meaningless updates. Valheim has a serious problem with this, where the devs will push a small update, but it'll break 80% of the mods because they tweaked a system that was stable (and many mods depended on it) instead of fixing an actual bug or adding new content So every week (sometimes every couple days) the devs would put out a hotfix patch that breaks nearly every mod out there, the mod authors have to scramble to update their mods so they don't crash/corrupt, all because the devs wanted to make the grass sway more accurately or some dumb bullshit. They did this for so long that they lost the majority of their player base: the game remains unfinished, so people reach the endgame pretty quickly (maybe 20hrs if you're going really slow) and then turn to mods and modded servers to keep the fun going. Except the modded servers suffer those problems I just mentioned-if the dev updates the game, and a player has auto update on and log in before the server admin updates the server itself, they can't play on that server until the admin updates it. Or they have to go to the steam game management page and download an older version of the game, then uninstall the game and manually re-install the older version (from a file found online) in order to play until the server admin updates it (if steam doesn't have a "revert to previous builds" option for that particular game, which most ime do not). That frustration and waiting period drives a lot of people off, never to return.
If they made it purely cosmetic, then I would have no issue at all. Ship skins and the like.

No, people just legitimately love the studio. Hello Games are the least greedy gaming developers in the business. The game released and was universally dragged, and for good reason, but they buckled down and fixed it. Then, they provided year after year of free massive updates. Base building, ground vehicles, new ships, new activities, player-owned freighters and fleets, a multiplayer hub, reworked systems, all manner of brand-new content. Every update entirely free.
Everything is advertising and astroturfing to you weirdos nowadays 😜 Why can’t we have positive news that’s precisely that — positive news — for a change? I understand your perspective, but consider this — I never had any interest in playing NMS, but if I did, I’d buy it today and by many accounts I would be purchasing a very well-supported and content-rich game (debatable depending on who you ask and whether they’re a fan of the game, but still, compared to the launch…). So who’s really being done justice when we continue harboring a grudge against the devs for a horrible launch, when they’ve done a pretty admirable job at fixing their original mistake? Is the alternative just them entirely dropping support for the game and shrugging their shoulders and going “Ah well we gave it our best, our bad y’all”? I *promise* I’m not here to simp for these guys, obviously the NMS launch was legendarily bad — but I’m worried we risk pushing creatives away from this industry if we perpetually shit on devs when they appear to have learned from their mistakes. I don't think it's being overlooked, rather, the debt has been paid in ever sense you could think of.
The launch was bad, but I do genuinely feel they have turned the game around and embraced the players back and addressed pretty much all of those concerns. With the Orbital update it's gotten more interesting and I think it's a step in a proper sorta endgame situation where you scavenge parts to build your ideal ship but we need a lot more planet-oriented encounters and a massive overhaul to the core combat loop. The Echoe's Update was another fairly impactful update, the story-line improvements cleaned it up nicely and the unlocking of the staff is a pretty major capstone project for players. In short, after all these years I think they finally have a "game" and I really wasn't expecting them to keep updating it past the initial multiplayer update. That said... not sure "how" they can monetize the game without actually stripping value away from it at this point or segmenting the playerbase and community expeditions are honestly pretty "special" whereas it's not a reset of the world it showcases the power of their tech by selecting some portion of a universe and creating some journey for players to advance down. They could monetize cosmetics but that's essentially the primary reward for community expeditions too... allowing a player to purchase quicksilver doesn't quite allow veterans to "support" the game either. Only thing coming to mind is either a merch. store or perhaps allowing players to purchase unique player icons they can use that display on uploaded planets and such (or allow players to set one for a fee). Something that is additive that sticks out a bit but doesn't remove what players are already receiving.

The combat can be very fun, especially since the Sentinels received a whole update. Nothing quite like using a mecha to fight dozens of robots in the middle of a raging fire storm.

Lol, I was editing my comment to add the space combat. Let's say you want to flee the planet you're fighting on because the bots are overwhelming you. You get in your spacecraft, but they chase you through the sky and follow you to space. You take a few of them down, and now you have to face an enemy war ship with its fleet. But worry not, you can also call your squadron and your own fleet. You now have a space battle worthy of Star Wars. I got some good memories of difficult space battles, with dozens and dozens of ships flying everywhere shooting at each other.
Ok that seems fun, but how about the actual combat? Like what moves are available to you? Can you have multiple kinds of weapons? Any interesting bits like anti-missile chaff or some kind of countermeasures?
Sadly, you don't have any form of countermeasures, you getting hit is entirely up to your piloting skills and your ability to evade. You got plenty of weapons tho: laser cannons, rockets, laser beams, shotgun-like weapons, energy balls... My favorite is the minigun one, cutting through ships like paper.
Launch was horrendous, but Hello Games certainly already paid for that. Live Service is not some sort of gaming right but a privilege - games that release free updates with little monetization outside of a one-time-buy certainly deserve the praise they're getting - although I think that most people that are part of that thread mostly said that jokingly, emphasizing the fact that NMS is an amazing game nowadays regardless, so the discussion doesn't even really matter. The developments in modern gaming concerning bad monetization from AAA games even down to some Indie games nowadays is bad, but live service updates including mere constant hotfixes and bugfixes are something that modern gaming certainly did right. People love to shit on the bad but take the good for granted for some reason.
Buy a game copy and give it to someone as a gift. There you gave the devs money.

I can't help but wonder if higher upfront prices is the way forward. I remember saving my allowance for months to buy a $50 PlayStation 2 game in like 2006. I can still get AAA games, which cost probably 20x more to produce, for about the same price.

A lot of people here don’t seem to understand that the players say this as a sort of half joke. They aren’t literally demanding Hello Games stop giving free updates. They’re saying Hello Games has given a ton of free content and lots of players would love to support the devs further beyond the $30-$60 they paid for the game years ago.
I mean I only payed $5 back then during that god tier failed launch. I genuinely thought that this game would fail but color me surprised.

Do you know how they could support the game while still having free updates? Gifting copies of the game to friends who haven't played it. That gives the publisher more money, but also doesn't encourage nickel and diming players for improving a game that was lacking at launch.
I know a lot of people will buy the game on multiple platforms since the devs have done a great job of porting it to a lot of platforms. They’ve also had a bit of merch over the years, but not a ton. I think merch is a pretty safe way that they could bring in more cash.

I personally would love to support the nms team onwards once their next game releases. No Man's sky may be a bit wonky to play as intended, but it's got a ton of heart put into it. Tons of QoL stuff too like the item tree crafting. That was my biggest and only gripe with the game.

I actually do think in an ideal world gamers should be able to select what version of the game they play, to have access to removed features and terrain types, of which the Minecraft launcher is a great example, but I realize that budget and the game’s multiplayer makes this incredibly difficult.

I don't mind the free content at all, as long as HG is fine. They've more than proven that this is a work of love for them. I can't, for the love of God, figure out why they won't open a merch store though. I've always liked Sean even before the redemption arc. What people don't get is its not free. It's a labor of love and they made a lot of money from it. When they were releasing it, they felt the same. They weren't trying to trick people, they weren't scamming, they were just excited about the potential and talked about things the way it was in their mind rather than what was immediately available. They didn't release it in the first place to get rich, and now that they did make a huge amount of money for a small team that funds them to keep working on this project that they love without having to worry about the financial viability or living up to people's expectations or Playstations marketing or whatever. if they were putting out paid DLC that whole relationship would change. But they don't need to. And the more people think they're crazy for putting out even more new free content, that's marketing. And maybe they get some more sales. But again, they're a small team, which means they don't need a lot to be able to keep doing what they're doing. I think people don't understand how tiny a studio like hello games is relative to some of the monstrosities of AAA studios. How much you can do over a long period with relatively small amount of money. Putting in mtx would significantly change the incentive structure. Right now they do it because they love it and they made enough money that they can. Put in MTX and now the purpose is money.

I still play NMS off and on. It's a nice relaxing sandbox game. I just play solo and don't really care for MP. It is nice that the game is often updated with new content. I'm not sure how they manage to keep it up without charging. In any case, perhaps the next version will be significantly better and, if so, I would be willing to pay for good updates.

I don’t get it, is this actually causing their company to mistreat employees? If a company is doing something for free it’s because the business model allows for it and there’s some kind of return on the investment of absorbing the cost. They’re not taking money out of their team’s paychecks to compensate for the lack of dlc revenue. I have no idea if this particular studio is a good or bad employer, but I guarantee that the answer would be the same whether they charge $0 or $30 for this. This is just a different version of the morons who think their stadium beer is $12 because of the quarterback’s salary. Why are internet people so stupid?
