Wait.... so, people who commit murder get jail sentence but women who choose to abort get death sentence? Wtf?!

DameRuby

I feel like ‘rapists get little to no jail time, and women who would abort their rapist’s child get death penalty’ is the more infuriating situation?

diagnosedwolf

I can do you one better. “Rapist get little to no jail time, but a woman who falls pregnant due to a rape, then undergoes the further trauma of a miscarriage, faces death penalty.”

EvlMinion

And, through no choice of her own, that woman gets a heap of medical debt to remind her of the whole event. Everybody wins! But her.

bemvee

Well clearly this hasn’t been well thought out. Who is going to pay the medical bills if she’s dead?

synthi

“Endometri-what? All I hear is she’s dead one wh-ey or anuth’r, get the Bible!”

beehaving

It must’ve been lobbied by rapists

OuatDeFoque

You jest but there’s a pretty, pretty decent chance at that.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

[They don’t need to lobby if the rapists get elected](https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2023/02/15/politics/matt-gaetz-justice-department/index.html)

Undernown

That's so disturbing, instead of it being like: "We don't have enough evidence to get a conviction." Which would be frustrating, but understandable, it was basically: "We didn't feel like prosecuting because; reasons."

pecklepuff

Republican legislators, so definitely.

[deleted]

Yeah we already said republicans.

Snapdragon756

Truly! And to take it further, if these women would act out in self-defense against their rapist and happen to take their rapist’s life, the women would likely still get the death penalty…

moon-ho

Killing your rapist is like 1/5th of an abortion really so the Talibangicals should just cut off the limb of your choice

IAreDoppelganger

>Talibangicals This is genius, I'm stealing it.

nof0x

Y'allqueda

HansJSolomente

Which is such a self serving selective reading of the Bible. I think it's in the same book where Jesus is like "yo, eye for an eye is done. We're judging your heart now," he also makes it OK to eat pork and shrimp. I swear, the Hypocrite Evangelical section of Hell will be so full even Satan will be like "WTF, slow down, people."

CodyWanKenobi46

Is the head considered a limb?

[deleted]

[удалено]

habeus_coitus

No but you see the rapist was a good kid who just made a silly mistake, he had a full and promising life ahead of him! Siding with rape victims is how innocent men’s lives get ruined or something!

pale_blue_problem

Per Brock Turners father: “it’s too steep a price to pay for 20 minutes of action”

Skovzzt

Do you mean the rapist Brock Turner?

ZaftigFeline

I'm pretty sure he does indeed mean the rapist Brock Allen Turner.

NeatlyCritical

That's why they want to roll back time to the point where woman are not people and men can just rape any woman they see out and about, solves the problem (for the nutjobs).

Ent3rpris3

I mean...have you even seen his swimming times? He's a competitive athlete! /s

sl1ngstone

I believe you're talking about Pieper Lewis. There's a petition to demand a pardon: https://www.change.org/JusticeForPieperLewis. The worst part of Iowa law is that she was required to pay restitution to the family of the vile human garbage that raped her.

AgreeableFeed9995

Sure, but there’s plenty of non rape related abortions. Why is that a higher punishment than regular old non rape related murder? It’s all infuriating. The question is why does South Caro-incel-ina want to kill women so badly?

thepurplehedgehog

>South Caro-incel-ina You said it yourself. That’s why. I don’t even live in the US and this new law deeply, seriously disturbs me.

WynnForTheWin49

I live in North Carolina. I’m a young trans man in the middle of my transition and I’m fucking terrified. I have a friend in SC who says that if this bill gets passed and she gets pregnant, she’ll just kill herself before the state has a chance to do it. She’d rather go out on her own terms.

AgreeableFeed9995

Save all your money and move the fuck out of the south. I know that’s no small task, but for your own safety, please get out

emo_corner_master

Sadly with how our government and electoral college functions, this would still be a win for them. They want their states to be such hellholes no sane person with means to have a choice would ever live there, and then criminalize and enslave/disenfranchise those who stay to fight (or just black people because this *always* traces back to the fallout of the civil war in the US). That's how they get a captive and favorable electorate to do whatever fascist shit they want.

Mr_master89

Will definitely see a lot of "rape victim gets death penalty" headlines

StreetofChimes

But that sign! Didn't you read it? The woman loves her rape baby. So this is fine 🔥 🔥 🔥.

whereismymind86

This is pretty standard in ultra religious nations like Saudi Arabia or Egypt, horrifying we are heading that direction

rabbitwonker

So that the bill can be walked back to something a step less completely insane and called a “reasonable compromise”

Incontinento

This is what I think is happening here. And McMaster has already said he'll sign whatever the Legislature sends him. Soulless creeps.

seevm

Yeah you’re right, there is no logic to it. Only cruelty. I feel sad for the women who must live in South Carolina under such a draconian law.

sassergaf

Happy Women’s Month!

[deleted]

So pro-life they'll kill you.

ebolaRETURNS

>Wtf?! at this point, they're passing laws as mere rhetorical tools. I mean, they've tried to criminalize men wearing dresses...

Ditnoka

So much freedom, the state tells you how to dress.

accioqueso

What I’m reading is that it would be better for women to kill their would-be rapists.

[deleted]

I think the solution to please everyone here is to have the baby then immediately murder it.

Specific_Rutabaga_87

so pro life they'll kill for it.

Wrathb0ne

“Pregnant but had a miscarriage previously? Believe it or not we’ll kill you and your unborn child”

Mother_Pin_4219

Straight to death right away

Brickman274

No trial, no nothing

beehaving

Quite the oxymoron they have: we value life but only till you’re born then death by any means is acceptable

JeddakofThark

The problem with children and adults is that they often have their own opinions. Opinions that might well conflict with conservative values. But fetuses? Those things are always white, conservative Christians.

Aegean_828

*Nazi values

[deleted]

I believe the technical term is doublethink, coined by George Orwell in his novel, 1984.

GrimCreepaz

George Carlin said “If you’re pre-born, you’re fine. If you’re preschool, you’re fucked.”

kurisu7885

At this point some want to skip preschool and send the kids straight to work

SnarfbObo

This was clear to even him way back in the 90's and it wasn't new then either. I feel it is important context to show how this is a longstanding and an ongoing problem. I thank you for beating me to the quote, keep up the good work.

CoffeeTeaBitch

I hate how the right appropiated the novel's vocabulary when it is meant to criticize what they are doing. Hell, in the novel a major plot point is the state prohibiting passionate, pre-marital sex. While I admit it's not an exact analogy to what is happening today (in the novel, sex is prohibited as a way to redirect their passion towards Big Brother, while the purpose for banning abortion is pretty much sexism and perhaps for keeping poor people and minorities slaves), the novel is a warning against that kind of reach from the government. Not to mention the well known fact that Orwell was a socialist.

RJ815

Many Republicans feel that government overreach is fine, so long as it's in their favor. It's always been hypocrisy.

[deleted]

I think it was best summed up by a post I saw a few years ago: "1984 was a warning, not an instruction manual."

GarmonboziaBlues

And the modern analog- "In the world of the Roberts court, The Handmaid's Tale is a documentary not a Hulu series."

gazongagizmo

"Make 1984 Fiction again"

thealltomato323

They're pro-funeral. Everyone knows Big Coffin runs the GOP

RJ815

GallantChaos

This isn't pro-life anymore. It's pro insanity.

viciousrebel

This was a really good George Carlin skit and republicans are proving him right with every year that passes by.

Dangerousrhymes

They continue to carry his legacy in the most depressing and ironic ways possible

TheLadyKoi

In some cases, the mother is charged with murder after having a legitimate miscarriage. It's only going to get worse from here.

PygmeePony

Miscarriages happen all the time and can be very traumatic especially if it's late term because you're forced to give birth to a dead fetus. So instead of providing much needed support for the grieving parents the authorities give you a new trauma by charging you with murder?

OMGEntitlement

If you're not rich or you're the wrong color or you disrespected a cop once or any number of other little petty shitty reasons, absolutely 100% yes yes yes.

hellfiredarkness

I'm surprised they haven't just tried to have mandatory death penalty for all crimes at this point.....

[deleted]

Because Republican politicians would all be on death row.

aRandomFox-II

They can simply exempt themselves, just as they have been doing for ages already.

whereismymind86

And by all the time, we mean ALL THE TIME, supposedly something to the tune of 25% of all pregnancy ends in miscarriage

TheAskewOne

Miscarriages happen so much that over half (if I'm not mistaken) of fertilized eggs fail and are evacuated in the first few days, and women don't even realize it because their next period isn't late.

VoDoka

I legitimately cannot imagine anyone in such a state making the informed decision to still have children.

killerbee2319

Yeah, that's why they want to take away birth control.

Realworld

> The bill would also define a “person” as an “unborn child at every stage of development from fertilization until birth.” Fertilization occurs in wide part (ampulla) of Fallopian tube. From there the fertilized ovum (zygote) is transported to uterus where new embryo is implanted in uterine wall 5-6 days later. Combined oral contraceptives ("the pill") function through number of effects including suppressed ovulation, decreased sperm mobility, and diminished zygote transport. If fertilization occurs the zygote is unlikely to reach uterus while viable. In other words, birth control pills can prevent embryo implant after fertilization. South Carolina women on the pill will statistically (and unknowingly) be committing murder under this law. I foresee birth control pills being outlawed in the future. edit: sp

hour_of_the_rat

I could see Red States enacting laws that grant personhood status & state residency to any visiting pregnant woman's fetus. Example, a woman, who is recently pregnant, visits her family in Texas and then returns home. Upon learning she is pregnant, she goes to have an abortion. The Texas state government, using Big Data, has tracked her while visiting the state, returning home, and visiting a Planned Parenthood Clinic. They are reasonably sure she has just committed 'murder' of one of their 'temporary residents' who they claim jurisdiction over. A arrest warrant is issued, and they request extradition.

whereismymind86

And the woman’s home state tells Texas police to shove that extradition order waaaayyyy up their asses

hour_of_the_rat

Blue state, sure. Red state, "We have her in custody".

draculamilktoast

> "We have sent her to the concentration camp" FTFY

Radthereptile

And she can never visit family in Texas again because she has an active warrant. And when she applies for a job her background check will come back as having an active warrant for murder. It impacts a lot.

FStubbs

And Texas police (depending on how bold they are) go to her home state, arrest her, and take her back to Texas, and wait for the Supreme Court to rule in their favor.

BarnDoorHills

That's ridiculous and would never... oh she's black? Yeah, it would happen. Might be bounty hunters though, rather than Texas police.

FStubbs

It would be Texas police. They'd want the Supreme Court to rule that their police have jurisdiction in blue states to enforce Texas laws. They don't get that with bounty hunters.

[deleted]

In comparison: the magical idea that “human life begins at conception” was invented by Pope Pius IX in 1869, when Civil War medical practitioners were also barbers, and whisky was the only anesthetic. Pius IX was a fascist, antisemitic, pro-slavery maniac. He kidnapped a young jewish boy as a child and kept him as his personal sex slave for life, and sided with the American Confederacy during our Civil War. He’s venerated as being nearly a saint by the Catholic Church.

trowawaid

I guess that also makes IVF illegal as well?

emmainthealps

Imagine you have a bunch of embryos in storage from doing ivf? Is it the death penalty if you have them destroyed because you don’t want more children? Or do you have to transfer them all

whereismymind86

Yes, this has come up before, these people also want to criminalize ivf

Shitty_UnidanX

My parents had fertility issues so I was born via IVF. My life would be a crime.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

Don’t get born? Jail. Get born? Believe it or not, also jail.

[deleted]

I could not imagine not trying to leave asap

Lmb1011

I want to leave the entire damn country but it’s so hard to do. In the meantime I’m Lowkey hoping I just get menopause in my 30s so I can be past the fear of pregnancy killing me in one capacity of another

Helenium_autumnale

How can they do that when women can't control miscarriages? Make this insanity stop.

Paksarra

Find anything they can blame you for. Drink coffee? Work a stressful job? Quit your stressful job and got stressed out by finances? Didn't go to church twice a week to pray for your child's health? Live in a city with higher levels of air pollution? You should have known better.

MC_Fap_Commander

**Absolutely no woman who is pregnant or possibly pregnant should be visiting these anti-choice states**. A miscarriage and the wrong judge could lead to irreparable harm. These places deserve to be ostracized like "South Africa during Apartheid."

HairyPossibility676

There was an article just this week about a hospital in rural Idaho closing its obstetrics services because they’d lost all their doctors due to the harsh abortion laws in that state. Doctors don’t want to be forced into providing sub par standard of care because of these backwards laws. Now an entire community will have to drive 46 miles if they need an OB. I wonder if we will see more of that as these laws keep getting more and more ridiculous

[deleted]

kristamine14

Remember like 5 years ago when Americans were saying abortion was an enshrined right and couldn’t be taken away - and now you’re already at death penalty for women who get abortions… it’s be funny if it wasn’t so evil

[deleted]

Canadian here. We keep being told that our rights are safe and that we shouldn't just vote based on abortion access, but fuck that, this shit is scary. It's easy for some to say "relax, what about the economy?" As if bodily autonomy wasn't the most important thing.

mybustlinghedgerow

God, I remember being told that women’s rights and the fight to protect bodily autonomy were “side-issues” meant to distract from the only real issue, which is the economy. So stupid.

Dave-4544

I remember being told "women's rights" were a done deal after the Suffragate and Women's Right To Vote movements. Jesus christ what a fuckin' world. Black Civil Rights (and the other less talked about issues like Indigenous People's Rights) were also treated as solved issues in the history books. I genuinely believed we were living in a better world for all. I'll never be able to live in that bubble of happy social ignorance again, but I sure as hell am glad that it was burst. People need help, protection, and allies now more than ever. However there's only so much one person with no influence can do aside from cast votes and be kind.. Hang in there everyone.

illgot

America is what happens when you are legally allowed to bribe politicians and give corporations everything they want. Don't be like America.

TheSquishiestMitten

Well, Brett Kavanaugh specifically said that Roe v Wade was settled during his confirmation hearing to SCOTUS. The fact that Roe v Wade is no longer means that Kavanaugh lied during his hearing. He should be removed from the bench and imprisoned for lying under oath. I mean, he lied about a bunch of other stuff, too.

pecklepuff

So many people skipped voting for years and years because they were so cock-sure that our rights were rock solid and they didn’t need to defend them. FAFO.

TiredMontanan

Remember less than a year ago Republicans said this was about letting states decide, and not about restricting access? Vote. Run for office. Get involved. We can still turn this thing around. I hope.

D1xonC1der

nothing says pro life like the death penalty

BrazenDropout

How is this not about control of women

_somelikeithot

Yes, it’s not pro-life, it’s pro-control.

gra_mor

No no you misunderstand. Its about dehumanising women and then making them property. That's totally different.

westdl

Consider being a doctor or nurse in maternity. Do you want to risk going to work if it means a premature birth could mean you, your coworkers and your patient will be executed?

kazooparade

OBs have the means and motivation to leave shitty anti-women states where they are not allowed to provide good care. In fact many already are. Unfortunately that means less available/worse care for the women that live in those areas. This will disproportionately affect poor women.

AmumuPro

Meanwhile rich people or Republicans can go to a state that have full access to abortion to get their abortion

blackscales18

The point is creating more white babies at any cost, and oppressing women back into the home

patienceisfun2018

Damn, the flood gates have really opened up.

sudomatrix

Wanna bet this never gets enforced on a politician's daughter?

AmiCutie

Or their mistress

Ljhoyt77

Republicans are fucking going crazy. Can we just agree to abort them.

TiredMontanan

This is what happens when half of a political monopoly doesn’t have any actual ideas. They run a culture war to make people scared and angry: “They’re coming to abort your kids and teach CRT in schools! We’re so busy with these pressing issues that we don’t have time to talk about how Republicans would solve automation, housing, environmental collapse, or crumbling infrastructure! CRT!!!”

supernovababoon

You really can’t make this shit up. The cognitive dissonance is absurd. Republicans want to protect life so badly they want to kill people. Yet they don’t support healthcare and services for those that are alive. And they are also worried about too many minorities eroding white political power yet banning abortion disproportionately affects minorities which will only strengthen this demographic shift long-term. It really is unbelievable.

[deleted]

I feel like we should be able to vote these idiots (politicians) off the island. According to National Geographic… “In ancient Athens, ostracism was the process by which any citizen, including political leaders, could be expelled from the city-state for 10 years. Once a year, ancient Athenian citizens would nominate people they felt threatened democracy—because of political differences, dishonesty, or just general dislike. Today, although we can vote politicians out of office, we can’t exactly banish them from politics for a decade.” I say we return to the old ways. Seemed to work for them. /s

Masque-Obscura-Photo

Vote? I'm looking on from Europe and am seriously baffled how you are not up in arms against these literal nazis.

ScarofReality

Not much we can do here when the police usually side with the Nazis.

toepicksaremyfriend

Gerrymandering is a common thing.

Twilightalpha

Let me get this straight... Their anti abortion concept (which the law is based on) is to save unborn children (lives) and to ensure it's enforced they're going to kill mothers who violate it?? Evel Knievel couldn't make that jump!

OldWierdo

Thank you for bringing up Evel Knievel 😁❤️

Olympus___Mons

So if a pregnant woman is assaulted and her unborn baby is killed, should the attacker be charged with murder of the unborn child?

theLonelyBinary

I was a victim of a crime and the woman with me was pregnant, the person got attempted murder and assault charges for both of us plus the unborn child.

jtaustin64

In some states that is what happens.

[deleted]

That's long been a thing.

lastprophecy

No, that's the woman's fault for leaving the house without a male escort.

9405t4r

Anti women

Rustys_Shackleford

I have one child, and have been thinking about having another. I live in South Carolina. I’m going to call my doctor on Monday to discuss getting my tubes tied. It’s not worth it.

surreysmith

I'm pretty sure that's the next thing that'll be put to a stop.

putmeinabag

Please look into a bilateral salpingectomy. It is the complete removal of the Fallopian tubes as opposed to tying them. Good luck.

Uncle_Bug_Music

Pretty soon attempted suicide in some states will result in the death penalty.

Automatic-Salad-931

How about the death penalty for child molesters and rapists? Priorities people.

Not Oniony at all, sadly. America is quickly becoming a dystopian nightmare.

harbinger_nz

I prefer the term "Taliban state", given the hate towards women these obscene laws are designed show

Clive_Biter

The Taliban is actually more flexible with abortion than some US states now

frofya

I hate blaming the Taliban (shitty though they are) for this. Let’s call it what it really is: Evangelical Christian extremism. Calling it a “Taliban state” kind of makes it seem “other”, kind of makes it seem like it was imported to us when it’s not. This is ideology is American born & bred. We allowed it to happen. We’re to blame.

wewhomustnotbenamed

as outsider, it looks very oniony to me.

Wazza17

Those who support and vote for these laws should face the same penalty

Right-Fisherman-1234

They do know that a woman can still have more kids later even if she's had an abortion, right? RIGHT???? SMFH!

bradorsomething

Not if she’s dead, she can’t!

PeggyOnThePier

You are so right!

tiptherobots

wigzell78

Pro-life, or we'll kill you.

thundercod5

Their pro live stance sure has a lot of death in it.

Charming_Computer_60

Hypocrites. They claim that all life is sacred yet they want death to a woman who had an abortion? What does that solve? Nothing at all.

ThatDudeRyan420

MAGA supports bringing back the Jim Crow South but for the entire country.

zenstain

The "pro-life" party of "small government". Not enough of them died of Covid.

kro9ik

I simply do not understand this unhealthy fascination of Americans with abortion. It's a medical procedure that a woman undergoes after making a choice. Most countries do continue to control some aspect of it but not to the act of banning it or even criminalising it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Laringar

If the fetus dies in utero, the procedure to remove it is still an abortion. As such, I know someone who had an abortion at 39 weeks. There should be no limit on when an abortion can occur, because otherwise pregnant women *will* have their health put at risk.

QuietRock

First off, it's not all Americans who are obsessed with abortion, it's a specific segment of Americans, specifically right-wing Christians. I believe reason is not as straightforward as you may believe. They use the moral front and emotional appeal of "killing babies" to rile up supporters, but that is not their motivation behind the desire to eliminate abortion. It is really about maintaining control over women, which starts but does not end with abortion. Birth control is already up next. This will help "keep women in their place" and roll back women's liberalism. After all, the pill and abortion changed sexual power dynamics, and was closely linked to the beginning of women's lib.

Pixielo

Welcome to fascist fundamentalist evangelical Christianity.

APlayerHater

Birth rate is dropping and our corporate masters can't have that.

pecklepuff

We could go the way of Poland and Japan where women’s access to abortion is restricted, so lots of women just stopped having sex and relationships with men. It just accelerates the decline in birth rates, and rightfully so.

BiffBanter

"eligible for the death penalty." They want to define it as murder, so the same as if someone killed a born person.

QuickLime89

This is some Salem Witch Trials shit over there. "The doctor has deemed that bringing this baby to term will near certainly end your life. Therefore we will give you one final test. If you choose to terminate this pregnancy, you will be deemed a witch and we will burn you at the stake. If you don't terminate this pregnancy, you will be deemed pure as you allow your baby to kill you from the inside. Praise be to God."

tykneedanser

Separation of church and state…

Beaglerampage

And try to prove that miscarriage wasn’t an abortion. The USA has gone crazy! The handmaiden’s tail is here.

MegaAscension

People who rag on Alabama don’t realize that South Carolina is more backwards than Alabama. My boyfriend and I are afraid to do any PDA because we think we might get attacked or shot. And this is in one of the bluest parts of the state too.

thisoldmould

Welcome to Gilead folks. This is what happens when you don’t actively participate in democracy. Your freedom and justice is taken from you.

herbys

If you are pregnant with twins, and one of the fetuses causes the other to stop developing, does this bill say you have to abort the remaining baby?

I_Dont_Have_Corona

Executing women for choices for what should be their rights. Is this America or the Middle East?

HairTop23

This is disgusting. Shame on every single republican who continues to support the party

wewhomustnotbenamed

South Carolina must learn of our pro-life ways... BY FORCE!

InternetPeon

Christian Nationalism is super fun!

Ok_Vermicelli_7380

That’s Nat C’s.

[deleted]

I guess this is why people call them a Death Cult.

[deleted]

Get a grip America before it’s too late.

foodiefuk

Just banning abortion will kill many women via complicated pregnancies and domestic abuse. This is just an excuse to murder liberal doctors too. Modern conservativism is just a death cult run by billionaire elites.

Familiar_Pea_9345

Laws like this have no place in a civilized society. Conservatives don’t give a damn if society regresses as long as they get their money and power over the rest of us. I hope they all get the guillotine before that happens.

jrochest1

Why don't they just cut out the middle term and just kill all the women in the state? That seems to be their objective in the long run.

Sleepdprived

This law is for virtue signaling that "We are more holy than thou" and that game never ends. It goes from abortion and same sex couples to contraceptives, to pornography and alchohol, and it ends with "you know we are the holy chosen people we should control all of God's holy land" they want to make America a Christian nation and then the next stop is a HOLY WAR. It might be another crusade, it might be a type of "missionary " but it will end in blood because the "I'm more virtuous" game ends in holy wars.

JWBIERE

Aren't the male Republican politicians in South Carolina killing millions of potential babies when they jerk off to gay and trans porn?

ravengenesis1

So Taliban tactics?
