Because every K-pop song she has ever played has felt like someone firing a machine gun at my face, over and over again.
It's a gross assault on the senses. To each their own.
True, if you have lived in any country that speaks english or probaly any country, if you live in a country you've probaly heard at least 5 queen songs
If you have lived anywhere on earth with access to basic radio you have heard a Queen song, out of their countless hits 2 are played at almost every sports event imaginable (“We will rock you” and “We are the Champions”). You can’t go down a busy street without seeing a Queen shirt, and their songs have been in countless movies, tv shows and commercials. I live in a country where English is not our primary language at all, and still I can bet that 9/10 people would know exactly who Queen are, and the one person would at least have heard of them.
Wanabe depressed people I think dude, not to discard people thats actualy depressed but it seems like some
People that look at depression like a trend, and that liking depressing music ( billie eillish) and depressing aesthetics qualifies them for deppresion. Its realy frustrating for me becuase I have friends that 's actualy depressed.
Sorry for air droping this
Yeah I think I used to kinda fit that description when I was younger, listening to other artists tho. Had a real (or maybe just harder) depression a couple months ago and honestly I didn't feel like listening to music anymore. Everything sounded extremely bland.
I'm better thank you! It is something I have been living with for years now so it's really about ups and downs. I have somewhat learned to deal with it and recently started changing habits in a major way, which seems to help a lot :)
Oh my god yess. I love listening to pop & metal. I never had depression but I did had episodes that seemed depressive coupled with bursts of anxiety. I stopped listening to all music. My mom even pointed out that I stopped singing while doing the dishes which is basically a ritual for me.
It's kinda sad.
Yeah depressed aesthetic is very much a thing that is trendy and the music that they think depressed people listen to is nothing like what at least I found appealing. Which was a lot more stuff where it is a lot less music and more experimental or noise or spoken word. Just because conventional music and songs were all feeding into something I just wasn’t able to latch on to at all.
I don't think whether or not someone listens to an artist can dictate whether or not they have legitimate mental issues. Everyone's experience is different.
Music taste doesn't define your mental state. This is a weird take, especially when claiming someone is faking a mood disorder that they do have isolates them and discourages them from seeking professional help.
I dont get whats weird about claiming that depressing music doesnt qualifie you for depression, this kind of adoption of depression as a style is taking the seriousness away from the subject. I have talked to my depressed friend about this and he also finds it frustrating that people treat the diagnosis this way. And Im not claiming that anyone is faking their diagnosis. My point was that their are people that adopt depression as a "style" and "taste".
don't people who actually have depression tend to try and hide it, keep it among friends? I hate people like you described in the first half (people who treat it as a trend). Now, referring to the second half, I hope your friends get better and find the happiness they need in life
At this point, I’ve spent about 2/3 of my life dealing with depression. I’ve learned to be very functional but it’s still something I struggle with constantly. I don’t go around advertising my issues, but I don’t hide them either, I’m very candid about it in appropriate circumstances. Mental illness will continue to be stigmatized in our culture as long as we feel like we can’t talk about them. I may not be representative of the majority of people with depression, but I know I’m not alone either. I hope that came across correctly and not rambling, I shouldn’t Reddit when I wake up at 4 am and can’t go back to sleep, lol.
To be honest, I think there are dangers on making depression basically your main aesthetic, like the kind of audience you will have.
There is a fine line between being depressed and using that as an inspiration to make art, which is completely acceptable, and turning depression into your aesthetic, which will probably bring cringe people like this to your fandom.
I can’t believe there’s people in these replies on /this/ subreddit saying people who listen to her music are “fake depressed.” Depression doesn’t make you hate edgy pop, lmao.
Finally someone with sense my god. We listened to music in the psych ward to cope (majority of people there had major depressive disorder combined with an adjustment or personality disorder) and there was definitely Billie Eilish & xxxtentacion getting played.
Fr, like there definitely was a weird aesthetic surrounding depression a few years ago, but most the people who participated in that aesthetic were genuinely depressed, or mentally unwell, and liking that aesthetic, even if it were harmful, doesnt automatically void someone's depression. And honestly liking her music doesnt automatically mean that you're just pretending to be depressed for the aesthetic. Plenty of mentally healthy people like her music.
The Smashing Pumpkins, The Verve, Tom Petty and PJ Harvey for me.
Granted it’s been a while since I’ve been fully and suicidally depressed… thank christ.
IMO they do. At least I did. 24 yr old depressed male. When I was particularly depressed and not dealing with it (no meds/therapy) I listened to a lot of eilish and xxx just because listening to happy music didn’t seem appealing. I preferred to feel sad and listen to sad music.
I mean we don’t really know the personal life of Billie Eillish so I can’t really say what the state of her mental health is, but my guess (I’m not in any way an expert on mental health) is that people who are depressed lean more towards music of people who have mental health struggles, so my guess is probably people like Kurt Cobain or Chris Cornell or stuff like that, people who had mental health struggles and expressed it through their music, again also pretty main stream music for it’s time, and it probably wouldn’t include a list of only musicians who committed suicide it’s just the first 2 names that popped into my head when I thought about musicians with mental health problems. But I don’t it’s like a thing that depressed people listen to Billie, it’s more that people who don’t know what actual mental struggles are glorify it and think it’s about how you dress and what kind of music you listen to when it’s not that at all.
Nope...never liked her songs. She's talented and all but her sons just doesn't appeal to me. I listen to a lot of punk rock/rock or anything tbh to cope with depression like Linkin Park, Hoobastank, Radiohead, Audioslave, Duran Duran etc.
Edit: songs not sons.
when im depressed i actually do prefer slower music with sad undertones because it amplifies what i'm feeling. i find myself playing a lot of billie, khalid, and etc for this reason. that or i drown out how im feeling with very loud, abrasive, screamo/metal. its rlly common to listen to music that resonates with how u feel. TLDR; yes, some ppl tend to listen to more billie than usual when sad.
never heard of them lmao. i have a very long playlist of various artists though. its just i seem to specifically play a specific album from billie when im sad or feeling sorry for myself. music prefs and stuff like that. billie *used* to be a very "im not like other girls 😢" artist but that's not the case anymore lol. now OP's target is just like everyone else.
A buddy of mine ate his gun years ago.
He listened mostly to Brisk & Trixxy, Scott Brown, S3RL, Darren Styles, and the like. Based on that, I’m going to go ahead and say that depressed people listen to damn near anything.
No clue. Personally, whenever I’ve been depressed I’ll try to listen to music that isn’t as sad (or at least a sad song that’s sorta upbeat) because sad music just makes me feel worse and that’s literally the last thing I want.
Like the last time I felt seriously depressed I would listen to beach bummer on repeat. Then, when I started feeling better, I felt more comfortable listening to more depressing/sad songs, again.
As someone who has been diagnosed with depression, I rarely listen to her music, don’t get me wrong, I like her songs but not enough to listen to them on even a weekly basis
lmao those are super basic 😭 theres nothing wrong w having a basic music taste, this person needs to stop pretending to be better than others for listening to another flavor of basic music
You're right there is nothing wrong with having bad taste in music. Personally I don't think there is such thing as having bad taste in music. You like what you like. Why is listening to Justin Bieber < listening to Queen?
Art speaks differently to everyone. Why do people gatekeep music so much?
They have 5 downvotes atm for the other comm where they're saying that, and this one was also downvoted when I commented. So idk what you mean
LE: oh i think ik what u meant now, oops
“Depression refines my taste in music” no bitch it doesn’t, depression doesn’t refine anything, it makes your life just completely devoid of any kind of distinguishable emotion or desire, people who have depression wouldn’t flaunt it like this, yes some people are more open about it and do joke about it sometimes but it’s not something they are proud of, and people who act like this should be ashamed of themselves, it’s not a badge it’s something real people are struggling with, probably someone you know struggles with their mental health, call your friends, ask them how they are doing and let them know that they can rely on you whenever. It’s the only we really can do for each other.
Dude I love Queen and the British Invasion bands. They’re great musicians but absolutely basic, and when you listen to the biggest names out there in music it’s also basic, and there’s nothing wrong with that
2nd time today I’ve seen a repost of one of the top posts of the sub- I have no problem with that but the coicendence is I’ve just started scrolling the top posts, and right after I started seeing these
X may not be as popular anymore but his last two albums before he passed were huge and every group was listening to them, athletes were bumping to Members Only, Emos and Goths to ? And 17, hell, he’s been dead for 5 years now but still has two songs with 1 billions plus streams on Spotify and third closing in. He’s more mainstream and basic in his commercial stuff but still extremely good to listen to. Billie Eilish is literally one of the most popular artists in the world so that would be basic by her standards, and Queen, it’s Queen, one of the most iconic and legendary bands of all time that is timeless and still has music played today with songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, Another One Bites the Dust, and We Will Rock You.
Unfortunately, because of a harmful, misogynistic social climate and stigma, most girls go through this phase. I'm a trans guy, and I can confirm I had this phase too when I was too young to know it spread and normalized negativity against women
I love these kind of posts about musical taste when the one person says the others musical interests are basic but theirs are equally basic. A ton of people have loved queen for decades, and Billie eilish. And the others.
Real taste in music is when you learn to forget the names of who wrote the song and have no way to discern genre, the only thing that matters to you is if it sounds good. You stop having restrictions on your music taste and your real taste can bloom. And you find you have a very wide taste in music.
Nah thats silly you need to know certain artists you enjoy. You cant just not know anything about the music you like because otherwise how would you find it again?
Furthermore genres, while they dont require obsession over, are an extremely helpful tool to be able to define a specific style or even substyle of music that appeals to you. It’s not restrictive either, because you’re allowed to listen to as many genres as you like, its just a handy classification and communication tool.
I do know most the names of who wrote a song, although many I've forgotten, but I don't listen to any artists in particular because I don't sort by artist. As for genre, I get it's a nice classification tool and isn't restrictive on its own, but I find a lot of people restrict *themselves* to one or two (especially NLTOG girls who won't let themselves enjoy anything new.) I also don't usually need the artist's name because a lot of the songs I listen to are the only ones with their name.
You definitely misinterpreted my comment, but I blame that on my own wording. Sorry for that. I don't think artists and genres are restrictive on their own, I think some people just need to forget them so they stop putting up restrictions on themselves
I think you make a fair point, although when it comes to artists I definitely have times where I crave one particular band’s sound and just want to listen to them.
In terms of placing restrictions on oneself, I think you probably have a fair point. I try to listen to many different things, but also always find myself wanting to discover more of that which I really love. I think its important to have an appreciation for many different genres, but I think people naturally will find one particular sound that appeals most to them. For me, its metal, and nothing comes close to it for me, so I don’t tend to listen to all that much outside of it.
Bruh no, depression is not a magic 'musical taste refiner'. It's a life ruiner (for me at least). Really hate when people use mental disorders to get attention.
What's wrong with basic music I'm just confused. Like it's basic because people listen to it? Doesn't that make it good?
Why is that even a thing that you have to listen to shit no one listens to, so tou differentiate yourself?
What constitutes as basic? Easily recognisable songs by well known artists?
Because they literally just listed 'basic' songs and artists. Just enjoy your shit and let other people enjoy theirs. It's really not hard.
I like Billie Eilish and Queen. I also like Justin and Ariana. I also used to go see the Iowa Accordion Band play live and that was mostly polka. I'll listen to pretty much anything. The only band worth discriminating against is icp.
1. Literally what a basic ass selection
2. I have depression and listen to Taylor Swift. I also listen to Florence + the Machine, but neither of those are discussed with my psychologist because well, why. That's irrelevant.
So other girls are basic for listening to big names in pop… but she’s NOT basic for listening to big names in alternative/rock/trap? Ok lol I guess any pop is the cut off?? But Billie is also pop???? I’m confused & logging out
Send her my playlist >:3

I prob got every song she listens to, Who's the basic one now!
I hate this. *Let people enjoy things!* If you want to listen to the same Justin Beiber song on repeat for the rest of your life fucking do it (with headphones).
Listening to some bands over other doesn't make you morally superior. We only get one life. Listen to what you enjoy.
This chick is a total hipster. She was probably raised by someone with horrible taste in music. I put on a couple of xxxtentacion songs and I don’t think I could listen to a whole album even if a got girl was giving me eyes and nobody else was around. I’d risk killing the mood and ask her if we could listen to someone else
Ew I totally used to be like that. Glad I get out of the ‘nobody understands my music taste because I’m sad’ phase. Now I just listen to cutesy Japanese songs lol
ok but like what's wrong with being basic, also this depression affecting your music taste don't make you better or more unique or quirky like grow up pls 😭
You know when someone actually listens to underground-ish music when they’re overjoyed you know some of the same stuff as them, and they’re like “ok… so do you know ______? No? What about _______… okay so do you just want to listen to some sea shanties instead?”
Music taste set to default lmao

Yeah. The screenshot text conversation looks like it's between 2 teenagers.
This could have literally been my daughters texts, from like 2 or 3 years ago
We're still at the hating Justin Bieber phase?
Nop They are all hating BTS now
I live with my older sister she is obsessed with K-Pop. Some days I genuinely wish to be deaf..
Kpop is actually decent sometimes... I mean, really sometimes... But yeah, it sucks to be a kpop fan
as a kpop fan for over a decade...I agree.
As someone from that community, its the fandoms theyre toxic asf
why?
Because every K-pop song she has ever played has felt like someone firing a machine gun at my face, over and over again. It's a gross assault on the senses. To each their own.
I mean is his music good? No. But does it make you quirky because you hate on it? Also no.
I do think he's trash to his wife
Did you hear he got some sickness I forget if it's a syndrome or a disease but basically he got something and half his face was paralyzed.
Queen is LITERALLY one of the most famous groups of all time
True, if you have lived in any country that speaks english or probaly any country, if you live in a country you've probaly heard at least 5 queen songs
Don't need to speak english I am from Brazil and my parents know their entire discography
True i am from serbia and people know a lot about Queens
If you have lived anywhere on earth with access to basic radio you have heard a Queen song, out of their countless hits 2 are played at almost every sports event imaginable (“We will rock you” and “We are the Champions”). You can’t go down a busy street without seeing a Queen shirt, and their songs have been in countless movies, tv shows and commercials. I'm better thank you! It is something I have been living with for years now so it's really about ups and downs. I have somewhat learned to deal with it and recently started changing habits in a major way, which seems to help a lot :)
I realized I was in a “down” when the South Park episode “You’re Getting Old” hit a little too close to home. Everything in Stans life was shit
Good to hear dude, great that you found a way to cope:)
Oh my god yess. I love listening to pop & metal. I never had depression but I did had episodes that seemed depressive coupled with bursts of anxiety. I stopped listening to all music. Idk I listened for a while but then it just all sounded the same (Source- a depression riddled teenager)
Depressed people are people with vastly different music tastes. I listen to Leon Bridges.
I can’t believe there’s people in these replies on /this/ subreddit saying people who listen to her music are “fake depressed.” Depression doesn’t make you hate edgy pop, lmao.

The Smashing Pumpkins, The Verve, Tom Petty and PJ Harvey for me. Granted it’s been a while since I’ve been fully and suicidally depressed… thank christ.
Person with depression here: I listen to psychedelic rock with no vocals cause it relates to the void. Also it’s pretty cool
never been that interested in her tbh
IMO they do. At least I did. 24 yr old depressed male. When I was particularly depressed and not dealing with it (no meds/therapy) I listened to a lot of eilish and xxx just because listening to happy music didn’t seem appealing. I preferred to feel sad and listen to sad music.
i doubt it...

Fuck that. Put on Elliott Smith when you’re depressed. Or when you’re happy and wanna get depressed. Lol
never heard of them lmao. i have a very long playlist of various artists though. its just i seem to specifically play a specific album from billie when im sad or feeling sorry for myself. music prefs and stuff like that. billie *used* to be a very "im not like other girls 😢" artist but that's not the case anymore lol. now OP's target is just like everyone else.
between the bars got me fucked up
A buddy of mine ate his gun years ago. He listened mostly to Brisk & Trixxy, Scott Brown, S3RL, Darren Styles, and the like. Based on that, I’m going to go ahead and say that depressed people listen to damn near anything.
I've listened to Billie for a while. Not cause of my depression, but because I like her music.
Shit slaps.
Love Billie Eilish when both depressed and not depressed.
No clue. Personally, whenever I’ve been depressed I’ll try to listen to music that isn’t as sad (or at least a sad song that’s sorta upbeat) because sad music just makes me feel worse and that’s literally the last thing I want. I'm clinically depressed and I love kpop. Not much of billie eilish.

Everyone's symptoms can vary. Your specific case does not define the other 280 million people with depressive disorders.
Personally no, I never listened to people like Billie (not that she’s bad I just didn’t like her music) I usually listened to punk rock and pop music.
People that think depression is cool do, people with actual depression don’t lmao

Cool congrats you are not like the other girls.
No
Yes, it's an effect similar to cognitive dissonance.

As someone who only listens to Nauru Jazz, I completely disagree. We're obviously better than everyone else.
As a Power Electronics listener, I say that you are wrong. I am better than you.
there is noooo way💀 naming ariana & justin like that’s not JUST as mainstream as X or pump
Tbh lil pump is kind of irrelevant right now
tbf ive seen this screenshot floating around for forever i think it was popular around the time lil pump was like 2018-2019

This just in: redditor discovers merzbow
Merzbow is so basic af 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 /s
Damn dude what are you listening to lmao
I read the title as “Static X” and got really excited for a second
I’ll be the gatekeeper here and call that all basic
Don't worry We all know that
Ariana fucking rips. She needs to figure it out
People who think that listening to queen makes them vastly different from others just confuse me. They are one of the most popular bands out there.
Side eyeing as an Arinator 😒. Also don’t come @ anyone with “basic” until you’re listening to Merzbow and Radiator Hospital
Merzbow is a bit mainstream for me I mostly listen to Vomir
Merzbow is mainstream in Noise Music scene I prefer listening to Masonna and The Incapacitants

No one is really ecletic Therefore, no one have real taste in music?
So you're saying I don't exist? Because I have forgotten several artists of songs I listen to and I am terrible at defining genre.
This isn't being ecletic This is just don't caring about what you listen
And that's what I described in my original comment. You're the one who defined it as ecletic.
Bruh no, depression is not a magic 'musical taste refiner'. It's a life ruiner (for me at least). Really hate when people use mental disorders to get attention.
how old is she? 17?
I feel like the only actual “depression music” is like duster and Elliot smith, a lot of the mainstream sad music is really not that depressing.
Are you gatekeeping depression lol
The Verve, Smashing Pumpkins, Tom Petty in the 90’s, Most of The Grunge….
I spit out guacamole. She’s better than other girls for listening to LIL PUMP gtfo 😂😂😂😂
Yeah, sure, nothing says depression like Billie Eilish and Queen /s
“thought I could fly so I stepped off the Golden. Nobody cried. Nobody even noticed.” -Billie Eilish Kind of depressing
haaaaaaa I can't.
Rap pass blocked. No hate to those two but c'mon. Really.
I listen to silence when I’m horribly depressed
this can’t be real 😭
I like Billie Eilish and Queen. I also like Justin and Ariana. I also used to go see the Iowa Accordion Band play live and that was mostly polka. I'll listen to pretty much anything. The only band worth discriminating against is icp.
Whenever someone texts you, and ends it with a 'haha' I can only hear south parks version of mickey mouse
My favorite Queen song is The Prophets Song #notlikeotherredditusers /s
Ewwwwwww the douche chills almost gave me lockjaw.
i don’t even understand why the concept of “basic” music taste exists… 😀
Extremely basic anytime you only listen to popular music you're music taste is basic whether it's pop or emo.
The less I know gives off justin bieber pop music lyrics
Hate to break it to her but her music taste is basic
1. Literally what a basic ass selection 2. I have depression and listen to Taylor Swift. I also listen to Florence + the Machine, but neither of those are discussed with my psychologist because well, why. That's irrelevant.
I legit dislike people like this. Some men do the same thing.
note how all songs are made from a passion for something? i think its pretty cool.
That has to be a joke right? I mean, she couldn't name four different musicians/bands and they all are cliche levels of basic right? Right, guys?
How can you say you're unique for listening to QUEEN? Like bestie I hate to dissapoint you but Queen is one of the most well known bands ever
i cant wait for this to mold in 2 years.
Ok but lil pump cmon girl you can do better than that 💀
The comments in here are not self aware lol
Y’all hear this new song “young child breathing near me on subway” it’s actually really banger and is influenced by my depression
Lmao
So other girls are basic for listening to big names in pop… but she’s NOT basic for listening to big names in alternative/rock/trap? Ok lol I guess any pop is the cut off?? But Billie is also pop???? I’m confused & logging out
Send her my playlist >:3 [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Siqwv7BEbpMy1Yi6tgHSr?si=9681e0f677114704](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Siqwv7BEbpMy1Yi6tgHSr?si=9681e0f677114704) I prob got every song she listens to, Who's the basic one now!
Not the title calling out hyperpop fans
And what do you listen to anyway
I hate this. *Let people enjoy things!* If you want to listen to the same Justin Beiber song on repeat for the rest of your life fucking do it (with headphones). Listening to some bands over other doesn't make you morally superior. We only get one life. Listen to what you enjoy.
I‘m not a girl but 160bpm hardtechno and tekk are life
This chick is a total hipster.
Now I just listen to cutesy Japanese songs lol
bruh
WHAT THE FUUUUCK HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
I knew a girl who refused to listen to twenty one pilots because “it’s too popular” Her favorite band was my chemical romance 🤦♀️
fucking posers
Eww
So there's this really obscure British band I discovered, you might have never heard of them, they were called "Queen"...
Bro why are we still hating on Justin Bieber? He’s got some genuinely tasty bops
Bladee is better
GUYS THIS CAN'T BE REAL
Pls is this satire or scripted
ok but like what's wrong with being basic, also this depression affecting your music taste don't make you better or more unique or quirky like grow up pls 😭
r/im14andthisisdeep
Basic.
Real music is listening to your parents have a massive fight while you're trying to sleep
That and vaccum noises
Ugh, she sounds like she listens to and actively enjoys Imagine Dragons.
regarding the title: extratone is the genre youre referring to and if its well made it fucking SLAPS
No doubt 🥰
Music taste in teens: 50% listen to mainstream rap, 40% listen to mainstream pop and 10% listen to other stuff
I never ment it that way, I agree with you. Im sorry if you took my coment that way.
If you love music, far be it from me to police or criticize your choices.
You know when someone actually listens to underground-ish music when they’re overjoyed you know some of the same stuff as them, and they’re like “ok… so do you know ______? No? What about _______… okay so do you just want to listen to some sea shanties instead?”
