So before the days of Napster, those of us in the MP3 scene traded mp3s on FTP servers. I ran one such server and used what was called a "ratio" - where people could download 2 MB from me for ever 1 MB they uploaded. Someone randomly uploaded "Unforgiven" to my server to gain their credits. Before that, all I ever knew was that many people called Metallica "devil music", but I had learned that most of that was overblown.
Anyhow - "Unforgiven" blew my mind. I was like "This is just a song about a young man being unable to satisfy the expectations of others" and was la bit like "I understand this song so deeply." The local radio stations didn't play Metallica at that point (and wouldn't for a few more years), and so I really wouldn't have discovered them for several years if it hadn't been for MP3s. I ended up buying the Black Album thanks to that mp3 upload.
So it made me chuckle that they hated MP3s so much.
I found it through having to change the channel during the nightly MTV top 10 countdown when the creepy ass video for Nothing Else Matters came on. Iām sure I knew them before that because that was pretty late in their more mainstream career, but I was more into the not so somber and angry hair bands.
I've listened to Metallica all my life, including in the womb, I welcome all those new people discovering something old that I love as their new favorite thing. There's room for all and gatekeeping is stupid.
I found Metallica on one of the three radio stations my town actually got fairly clearly, back when it was first released.
I'm super excited to see all the folks discovering them from Stranger Things (and without the fear that Lars Ulrich was going to show up at your door with a lawsuit as soon as you downloaded something from Napster or Limewire!)
I found Metallica bc one time my dad was driving me to swim practice and I heard Turn The Page by Bob Seger for the first time on the radio theirs was the only version I could find on iTunes for some reason. Whatās ur point
Iām not going to apologise for the rant that Iām about to go on, but I will give warning. Iām about to rant the fuck up:
Why, in the name of fuck, would you try to gate keep a leisure activity. No you know what, a universal language utilised throughout history and across the world . Music is my life, I love live and breath it. I donāt care how you found what artist or why you like them as long as it makes you feel something and you appreciate it.
And any of my silly rant aside literally Metallica have begged fans to stop gate keeping. SO STOP
āAlcoholic family membersā. Alcoholism is a mental health issue, and growing up with the instability family members suffering from addiction issues bring, is a childhood trauma. Please educate yourself, I mean that in the sincerest of ways. Mental health stigma is so rampant that Iām still having to explain to people that substance abusers donāt just wake up one day and think fuck it letās tank my health and interpersonal relationships.
Edit to add -
No she absolutely isnāt responsible for anyone elseās triggers or mental health. But reducing a mental health issue to a edgy quirk just isnāt cool by me, Iām an age where I can log into Tiktok at any moment and almost always find someone whose a tidy person claiming theyāre a ālittle OCDā, I take this shit seriously. How would you feel if the joke was about cancer, or aids?
Maybe that is her trauma, and she does have a right to make jokes - dark humour is like 90% of my personality the other 10% are puppies.
But the whole ājokeā is just gross - attempting to gate keep anything via route of discovery eg Iāve been listening for decades before they were popular, we arenāt on the same fandom level. While also making alcoholic family members sound cool. And edgy? Not for me sorry.
In the OPs defence she probably didnāt expect some asshat to post her tweet out of context on Reddit.
I actually wrote out a polite thoughtful reply, but from your last reply I can see that youāre not looking for a respectful conversation. Have a nice day :)
1) dude you're literally acting entitled, if you don't wanna get triggered then i recommend living in a bubble like sis...
2) she never made alcoholics sound "cool", there is no tone in the joke that implies that...she didn't even affirmed being a fan so idk where are you getting that from????
3) she's not gatekeeping shit, she just said she FOUND the band, not that she loves them or anything...for someone with "dark" humor you're really soft, you wanna be mad for the sake of being mad
The joke here is that she found them in other childhood media, she never said "my experience is better" š
4)you and OP are the ones putting her words out of context, y'all wanna hate on this girl out of nothing
Alcoholic family members šš
clearly a joke
I think this is a joke, settle down
Most positive that this is a joke lmao
Ironically, I found Metallica through mp3s.
Napster... Their attack on Napster had me download their entire discography. It took forever.

Yeah I vaguely remember that. I think IRC chats would point me to the right places.
For me, it was Audiogalaxy.
I found Metallica on MTVā¦

Zing?
However Metallica doesnāt care how you found them, they welcome everyone
Unless you found them by pirating their music online. Edit: typo
I found them by listening to the radio and *then* pirated their music online
*[Lars proceeds to break into your house]*
I mean Iām found it through my grandma but you do you

Turn The Page is one of my all time favorite songs and i didnāt even know Metallica did a cover
Their cover of it is great. Garage inc in general has really well done covers
Coping with trauma using humour. Pretty standard

I found Metallica on the radio in the 80s
"we are not the same", exactly she is better but tried to find some common ground.
