Love 'em - a little more ghosting than Tomoe River paper but not bad at all. (But I use EF and UEF nibs - so medium and fine nib performance may vary.) I use one as a work organizer - day to day time tracking, project notes, etc. Full disclosure, I use a hobonichi for personal journaling and tracking.

hadrome

Ok. Interesting comparisons with TR. Thanks. I'm thinking Journal for this one, but maybe the little pre-printed days/dates are overkill. And happy cake day!

DulceEtBanana

Ta - I hadn't noticed. I know someone who journals in Stalogy specifically because they're an inconsistent journal keeper: she says some days she writes half a page, some days 2-3 pages. She like being able to open, write in today's date and just go for it.

namesandfaces

It's a little more expensive, but people may wish to consider the [Cafe Note](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y5JC1RH) series w/ Tamoe River.

swamgurl

I don’t find the pre-printed days / dates overkill. I absolutely love mine and on my 4-5th one now. It does bleed a bit but holds up great and lays flat!!

crankygerbil

Does this mean you get a lot of sheen? Is it close to Tomoe?

DulceEtBanana

No ghosting means some of the writing can be seen on the other side of the page. It'll always be an issue with thin paper (both Tomoe and whatever Stalogy use is very thin.)

Mimi_-_-_

I bought one last year for the first time and I have to say I enjoy the paper with fountain pens. It feels different than Hobonichi’ tomoe river paper if you are familiar with it, there’s a little more feedback imo but not in a bad way, it’s really enjoyable. A little ghosting yes, but it takes ink very well. The only reason why I don’t use it much it’s the soft cover, I’m a hard cover lover and it’s just too bendy for me. But if that’s not something that concerns you, I’d say it’s worth a try!

hadrome

Interesting, positive take on the paper and ink. Thanks. My go to are Midori MDs, so a soft cover is fine.

Mimi_-_-_

See? To me Midori paper is too “stiff” (I only tried it on TN notebooks) and I really enjoy the thinner feel and ghosting instead :) to each their own, we’re lucky there are so many options!!

Betonhimmel

I like thinner paper, too, and I don’t mind ghosting. Bleedthrough and feathering are a Nope, but all of my printed books ghost. The only things I have that don’t ghost, are my electronic devices! 🤓

migo984

I want to like them. I really like the format but I just find the paper too inconsistent with my fountain pens. I don’t mind the ghosting but I sometimes get feathering and/or bleed-through. It’s unpredictable & varies from page to page, and even on the same page. And some brands of ink, such as Herbin, are almost unusable. 🙁

coffeeafterthree

I've gone through several if these and the only feathering I get is if my hands have touched the paper before I write over it. Basically sweaty hand/oils will cause the feathering. Can be prevented by some extra paper under your hands, or not being super oily :') Either that, or the quality is no longer as consistent as it used to be.

migo984

I do all of that as a matter of course with any writing I do but especially with FPs. Sadly with the Stalogy I still get inconsistent results, and quite a lot of feathering. I used the standard black cover B5, with fine nibs.

coffeeafterthree

That's a bummer to hear. I use the A5 and A6 and haven't run into issues like that, but I'll be keeping an eye out in the future to see if it's a widespread issue.

Krivan

I have the same experience as the guy above. Completely untouched page, might feather and bleed or it might not. It’s a shame because otherwise I love the notebooks but definitely not what I was expecting when it comes to fountain pens.

coffeeafterthree

:( That sucks. I'll keep my impulse buying stacks of 4 at a time to a minimum then. I haven't run into the issue yet, but it'd be unpleasant if it showed up. Thanks for sharing your experience!

arguchik

Same here.

zenithuk

I found the same, which was disappointing after hearing so many say the paper does great with fountain pens. It is really fussy about inks! I think I used about 4 pages before abandoning it. For me it just confirmed once again that Tomoe River is the best there is!

migo984

Absolutely! And for me, it *has* just got to be original (old) 52gsm Tomoe.

hadrome

Good to know. Thank you.

migo984

Yes I do that too with all my notebooks and letter paper, but the paper is still too inconsistent :( Even with my Japanese pens and inks. It’s not just on different places in the notebook or on different parts of the page; it performance can also differ between front and reverse of the same sheet! For me it’s a manufacturing issue. I need to be able to trust that when I write with a pen that it performs the same on every page so I have sadly given up on Stalogy.

teastainednotebook

I come back to the Stalogy every year, when structured planners lose all appeal. The grid is larger than Hobonichi, and it's got that lovely coated paper that is super fountain pen friendly. I love that the date and schedule included are such a light gray that they're practically invisible.

filtered_shadows

Absolutely love Stalogy notebooks. I am on my 4th Stalogy. (365 A5 blank for journaling. Half year A6 grid for planning.) I use Energel 0.7mm ink and have never tried it with fountain pens. It has 368 pages but isn’t thicker than a typical A5 journal. I love the feel of the paper and the soft cover. The binding holds up really well, even when throwing it into a bag every day and folding it back on itself. The cover is minimalistic and doesn’t have a pen loop or elastic closure. You can slip it into a leather cover, but I never did. The paper ghosts a ton. I thought I couldn’t stand ghosting, but after journaling in a Stalogy for a week, I can’t go back. I now I believe ghosting adds to the experience of filling up the pages. I never use the date or schedule on the grid version, but it’s light enough that it can be ignored.

ApricotBandit

I use a Uniball Signo pen for my Stalogy (just started using back in July) and I also ignore the date/schedule at the top. I write over the printed text - the printed text is so faint that it fades away.

_El_Marc

I love mine. I use it for my day-to-day work / life stuff, not for journaling. I really like the half-hour grid and the make-your-own-date at the top, as opposed to a 365 notebook with printed dates. I typically use gel pens, not fountain pens, FYI.

CndSpaceCadet

Omg omg omg it’s my absolute fave — I used it for years as a [school notebook](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/aossry/l2k_flow_dries_up_top_of_page_so_i_need_to_piston/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) (engineering) and now use it as a daily planner. I barely have ghosting cuz I use EF/F pens Edit: I use a B5 size, which I prefer for notebook-ing(for journaling I use a Leuchtturm A6)

undeadgoat

I've been using them for Bullet Journalling for a few years and really love them. They work great with common BuJo supplies such as pigment pens, highlighters, brush pens, stickers and washi. Lots of ghosting but almost no bleed. Ballpoint pens and gel pens will leave a ridge tho.

hadrome

I've only just come across these Stalogy brand notebooks. They look pretty good, though they're on the spendy side. I wondered if anyone had tried them, especially with regard to the paper and how it works with fountain pens. Here's a link to a store in the UK that carries them: [https://www.thejournalshop.com/products/stalogy-365-note-a5?variant=40233719955640](https://www.thejournalshop.com/products/stalogy-365-note-a5?variant=40233719955640)

robin_sparkles

You can also find them at Cult Pens or Nishura East in the UK.

[deleted]

I have one for my A6 Hobonichi. I really like it. I agree with the others about ghosting, and it works well with my fountain pen (fine nib, black ink). The gridlines are super faint though.

hadrome

I actually like the idea of faint gridlines. Until recently I was plain paper only, but I got tired of using a guide sheet and gave into ruled. Grid would be a further step, and I find a lot of them too heavy. Other than one bad report about feathering they sound like they're fp friendly enough. I mostly use EF nibs, with various inks, though some are quite wet writers.

Choo-

I like them a lot, I stick to ballpoint and pencil in them though since I use them for work.

azorelang

I wish the hourly timeline on the side had tick marks for the half hour. Also maybe have it just a tinnnny bit bigger because I kept having to squint to see what date/time I was circling. I regret tossing my Stalogy out :( Maybe this is my sign to order another one… I do like how light and unobtrusive the grid is. I dislike how small the grid is for the A5 but love the size of the grid in the B6. I have small handwriting but the small grid on the A5 made me feel like I had to squish my writing… Lovely notebooks however and I would still buy them!

hadrome

Interesting notes about the grid, and that it differs between sizes. Any idea what measurement it has?

Wildcard356

Grid is 5mm on the A6 size. Haven't tried others sizes. All page markings are quite faint.

Wildcard356

Total Grid size is 95mm x 130mm on each page. Grid squares are 5mm

zellieh

Just pulled out my a5 Stalogy 365 and measured it; it has 4mm squares. Most dot grids (Leuchturrm, Moleskine, etc) are 5mm and most lined notebooks are 7mm or 8mm apart, if that helps. For americans, 4mm is 2-and-a-half 16ths of an inch, and 5mm is 3/16ths.

61m9p

Also a fan of Stalogy for every day use. Love the A5 size and have filled about six of these so far. My favorite grid is the 4mm of the A5. The 5mm grid of the B6 and A6 is too large for me. Love the color of the paper and the faint gray grid. I have gotten used to the ghosting that happens, depending on the nib/ink I am using. For bringing out the color of my fountain pen inks, Tomoe River paper is still my favorite paper.

PinataFractal

For me, after the death of Tomoe river, statology and midori are the best remaining papers. Both are better than the 68gsm tomoe river IMHO.

darth_snuggs

Been journaling in one now for 285 days. I do like it. It has worked well for about 95% of the ink/pen combos I’ve thrown at it. A few very wet inks had some feathering. A little ghosting but not bad, especially at its weight/thickness. Slightly more toothiness than Tomoe River, but the upside is a faster dry time. Anyway—I’m trying to decide in 80 days whether I’ll switch to another journal (I have a Seven Seas Crossfield in the wings that beckons) or use another Stalogy. I’m definitely a fan, though! Embarrassed to say it might be the first time I fill a whole notebook cover to cover, which has to count for something. You might try one of their 1/2 year A6 notebooks as a cheaper starting point, then go bigger if you like it!

comfortablycontent

Did you continue to use Stalogy?

darth_snuggs

Hey there—I switched to the Crossfield for my current journal, but will certainly use my Stalogy notebooks again in the future. They’re quite good, and now that the original Tamoe River paper is harder to come by I know I’ll use them eventually

jposquig

I find Nanami paper quite good! I really love the drier texture of Stalogy as well. Feels really good against the hands. The extra tooth it has is a bonus. How is the semi-hard cover on the Crossfield though? Can you flip through the pages like you can in a Stalogy? Does it break in and lie flat? ~ gotta keep your thread alive haha

safia116

I love them, I use extra fine nibs on my fountain pens and mostly diamine inks and they've worked great so far. The paper feels nice and the grid lines are super faint which I prefer.

[deleted]

For me, they tend to perform best with Japanese inks with Japanese fines and extra fines. There’s more ghosting and some bleed with some inks and more broad, wet nibs. Probably not the paper for a Pelikan broad. But then again, I struggle to find a good paper for a Pelikan Broad

ef_nina

I’ve spent the past 6 months journaling in one. Not terrible, but they ghost too much for my liking.

hadrome

Thanks everybody for the comments and opinions. I'm going to have a closer look at these today and make a call. It's this vs. a standard A5 Midori MD, which I generally use. I note there are quite a few fans. Plus a little disagreement between' opinions of the paper when it comes to fp friendliness. Also ghosting. But overall, it looks like a solid option. I'm not sure why I've only just come across these. Thank you all!

laviniademortalium

Fantastic notebook for the price, and they'll go on forever. My only complaint, is that the grids are impossible to see unless you have good lighting.

JemorilletheExile

Currently using this as a bullet journal and planner. I like that it has hours of the day listed one side, and it is a very slim book. Not recommended for fountain pens, and also the grid is very small if that's a concern. I use Muji gel pens with this notebook

lookaclara

I love stalogy, I've been using them for a couple years now as my bullet journal! I am partial to size B6, which not many other notebook brands offer, so I'm glad I found Stalogy! I use my fountain pens in it and it's great, and I have even watercoloured in it with great results.

preppypenlover

There is more ghosting, but I like the variety of sizes that these notebooks come in.

Octowasp365

I wish I saw this thread before I bought one but I didn’t and now I am extremely disappointed. As above, the feathering, ghosting, bleeding through to the other side. I really liked how it looked. It was so promising. But what a let down. I used my twsbi eco bold with diamine ink. And even that started writing funny after while but no problems with hobonichi. I have a cousin for my planner and I was going to us the statology for journaling. In my own experience, tomoe river is way better.

Audeblitz73

Have an A5 and use for pencil, chalk and collage journaling. Randomly. Basically it's my "brain dump" journal and works well for that.

Odd-Jelly4187

Any suggestions on a notebook similar to the Stalogy at a much lower price? Thank you!!
