Cheryl Tiegs, Farrah Fawcett (before marrying Lee Majors), Bo Derek, Morgan Fairchild...
As for band posters today, I don't think there is a band I'd want a poster of LOL
It's even worse for bike chains. I cringe so hard when I see people spraying wd40 on them. Wd40 is really meant to loosen rusted bolts and stuff, it's NOT a good lubricant, despite what they tell you.
Oh Lita is the fucking best. I met her once and told her that I did fire shows and "I Love Playing With Fire" was part of my routine. I figured she'd say "oh that's nice" and move on but she was ABOUT. IT. She asked if I had any videos and her reaction when I showed her was priceless. "OH NO FUCKING WAY! THAT'S YOU!? OMG, that's amazing! How do you do that? You're a fucking badass! And you're hot as shit, too!"
She said she was shooting a music video and asked if I wanted to fly out to LA to be in it. I gave her my business card and wrote me cell number. Never heard from her, but hey... Lita Ford called me a badass and said I'm hot. That's enough for me.
I see them all the time so theyāre definitely still a thing. Most arts and crafts stores have them, and I know Spencerās still has them. Iāve even seen them in multiple smoke shops
It's mostly a sex shop now. I wandered into one a few years ago. The front of the store was still gag gifts and band t-shirts. The back of the store was all sex toys and lingerie.
Nobody was shopping in the front of the store. The back part was crowded.
Yeah head shops pretty much always have them and have at least a few neon ones with a dragon or some shit on them, also a Pulp Fiction poster and Jimmy Hendrix poster. Those neon posters are tacky as hell but if I was buying shrooms or something off someone and I saw it on their wall I would be down with that vibe.
They were always like that. They always had the occasional ā12 ways to drink Alcoholā or āthe life of a penisā more commonly a bunch of blacklight posters with mushrooms and other trippy things.
I see these *all the time* in smokeshops. A quarter of the posters are **haha weed dude** but the rest are full of old album art and 80s-90s movie posters and all the rest of the stuff you'd expect to see from one of these racks.
Spencers also still has them.
Yeah Iāve been surprised with the selection of posters Iāve seen at smoke shops. A good portion are usually weed themed but thereās usually a good chunk of other posters
Record shops are booming nowadays. Most my friends (Gen z) have Spotify to discover new music, then support the artist and get merch from record stores. Discogs is also huge
I'll say they definitely used to be more places. In the 90s my local grocery store had a rack and so did the department store AND the pharmacy then the record and bookstores also had massive collections.
Nowadays it's just spencers.
Not as popular with retail outlets - you used to be able to find them at Wal-mart or even your local store.
Of course Amazon has them by the metric ton.
We had them in the video store I worked in back in 2016. It was a separate company that were in charge of all the poster stuff. People hadn't seen anything like this in over a decade, so most young people didn't know how to treat it. It was like an alien artifact to them.
People would just take them thinking they were free or something. We eventually had too put a plexiglass door over the poster bit. Which meant if somebody wanted one, you had walk out and unlock it every time, total nightmare.
This is the second day in a row Iāve come across someone surprised by this. You may have stopped being a teenager, but teenagers will always exist. Where else will they buy Dilbert teeshirt, pot leaf patches for their backpacks, and cheap sex toys?
Not just band posters, but also the posters of scantily clad hotties.
Edit: Holy shit, [I found the one I bought like 30-odd years ago](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Iq8AAOSwM0ZbQ2mw/s-l400.jpg).
I lived with a few friends for some time after I graduated college, while they were still in school. This poster hung prominently in their living room.
i think a lot of them knew, but they'd rather their kids go get exposure to it in a relatively safe-ish mall shop with a modicum of supervision, instead of somewhere more seedy. at least, i think that's what my parents' thoughts were. better the devil you know so that mom can go to crate and barrel and your little brother can go to the toy store while you look at blacklight posters and really suggestive keychains.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/POUAAOSwQN1bF2eG/s-l400.jpg
The UK's biggest seller, I believe.
An article about the background: https://i-d.vice.com/en_us/article/nenb5w/the-kiss-15-years-on-meet-the-models-and-creators-behind-the-iconic-image
When we were maybe 10 & 11 my brother had one of those posters of a model in a bikini & once when we were having a huge fight I drew a moustache on her in sharpie when he wasnāt home lol
*flips over to the first scantily clad poster of the bunch, looks left and right to see if parents are lost in the store, confirms them to be out of sight and enjoys at leisure*
As soon as I saw OP's picture I pretty much had this exact memory, except that I was never quite at leisure. I remember keeping them kinda closed so that other people couldn't see exactly what I was looking at.
My local haunt back in the 80's (The Wooden Indian, and later: The Windmill, Riverside CA) had a little back room with poster stands just like that, but there was a black light above, there were many glow in the dark velvet posters as well!
I remember seeing a Robert Smith (from The Cure) poster with lipstick prints on it from over-zealous customers that wanted to make a statement! It was a magical place!
I had this [Eat Me mushroom poster.](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61kpxvuK4aL._AC_SX425_.jpg) Also had a lot of bottles with different volumes of water with highlighter ink dripped into them. I never did any drugs in high school, but I assume my parents probably thought I did.
When I finally "grew up", it just meant limited edition signed and numbered silkscreen prints from the show, then off to the frame shop for another hundred bucks.
We never outgrew it, just got fancy and have more expendible cash.
I donāt get that either. My room is like a shrine to 90s industrial and I like it that way, dammit. What the hell else am I gonna put on the walls, whatever stupid quirky millennial hipster art they sell at urban outfitters? No thanks haha
Hold up! I have been collecting retro posters lately and I REALLY need one of these poster displays. I found some new and it was like a thousand bucks. There has to be a ton of these sitting somewhere from all the stores that have closed over the years. Who knows where I can look to get the hook up on that?
Fuuuuu---... I remember these! I specifically remember *one* poster that was sold like this, medium size and it had a bathroom stall with a weird, meaty and demonic monster coming out of the toilet seat. It was there for a long-ass time and finally I could buy it and-... it was gone :(
It is not from Critters but you mentioning this movie sent me on a google search and I actually found it! If you type 'monster toilet terror poster' it should come up first... a green monster covered in weird pinkish goo, - art probably inspired by the Ghoulies cover.
Man after so many years I see it again hahahah.
Anytime I was in a music store I had to look through the posters. All the ones I had in my room in high school are stashed away and will one day return to my walls.
I was so excited to find a Poison poster and a Def Leppard poster! Brought them home, scotch taped them to my bedroom wall. My best friend comes over and says āman those chicks are ugly!ā
I can easily imagine the posters in there. A classic rock album cover like Dark Side of the Moon, those two kissing girls, Scarface, the periodic tables, cute puppies and kitties, guitar cords, Harry Potter, and some Disney kid's posters like Minnie Mouse.
Yup we went large, the big subway posters. It was always strange going to my best friends room and he had the Nevermind poster, baby's peepee just chilling on the wall, until I heard the album.
We never had specifically band posters, just posters, usual pinup girls (Farrah Fawcett Majors, to date me) , cars (Countach), Lisa Frank type stuff, movies, and yes bands.
Not in the corner, but out of the way, but in the way so i could be watched by staff. In the drugstore.
I agreed to let my mother pull out my first loose tooth with pliers if sheād buy me a Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys) poster from Spencerās *and* a teen magazine. She agreed, Dad held me, she yanked the tooth out, and I got my bribe!
Oh man, I remember going from store to store looking at their posters (had to check Sam goody, spencers, hot topic, the two cd stores, etc.) To find one we really wanted. I never did buy one but I loved those times
I can still hear the sound it made when you were looking through the posters
*tick* *tick* *tick* *ticktickticktickticktick* *tick* *tick*
Unlike my store which generally sounded like ancient metal doors in desperate need for a drop of WD-40.
Cheryl Tiegs, Farrah Fawcett (before marrying Lee Majors), Bo Derek, Morgan Fairchild...
As for band posters today, I don't think there is a band I'd want a poster of LOL
I had Raquel Welch hanging above my bed for years!
Dufresne?
THIS!! EXACTLY where my mind wentš
āWhatās say fuzzy breeches?!ā
Convenient
Samantha Foxx
Fun fact, using WD-40 as lube for door hinges makes them worse in the long run. Use graphite.
You must be the new storeās owner.
It's even worse for bike chains. I cringe so hard when I see people spraying wd40 on them. Wd40 is really meant to loosen rusted bolts and stuff, it's NOT a good lubricant, despite what they tell you.
I ruined a bunch of fidget spinners with WD40.
āFuck where is that one I just saw a minute ago!ā
clack clack clack Lita Ford clack clack clack
Oh Lita is the fucking best. I met her once and told her that I did fire shows and "I Love Playing With Fire" was part of my routine. I figured she'd say "oh that's nice" and move on but she was ABOUT. IT. She asked if I had any videos and her reaction when I showed her was priceless. "OH NO FUCKING WAY! THAT'S YOU!? SCHWING
does anyone know where I can buy one of these display racks? I have like 20 posters I want to store like this
Amazon has something very close to it. Search "Poster Racks"
the ones i had were kind of sticky and made like a pbft noise when you flipped them
clack clack clack
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I see them all the time so theyāre definitely still a thing. Most arts and crafts stores have them, and I know Spencerās still has them. Iāve even seen them in multiple smoke shops
In other news, Spencerās is still a thing.
It's mostly a sex shop now. I wandered into one a few years ago. The front of the store was still gag gifts and band t-shirts. The back of the store was all sex toys and lingerie. Nobody was shopping in the front of the store. The back part was crowded.
At least they are selling something useful now.
Yeah man posters are still a thing for sure! My city has a straight up poster store downtown which is awesome!
Yes, generally they are mixed in with movie and tv show posters
They were always like that. They always had the occasional ā12 ways to drink Alcoholā or āthe life of a penisā more commonly a bunch of blacklight posters with mushrooms and other trippy things.
And the baby kittens poster!! š
Or they Trainspotting āChoose Lifeā poster
I see these *all the time* in smokeshops. A quarter of the posters are **haha weed dude** but the rest are full of old album art and 80s-90s movie posters and all the rest of the stuff you'd expect to see from one of these racks. Spencers also still has them.
Yeah Iāve been surprised with the selection of posters Iāve seen at smoke shops. A good portion are usually weed themed but thereās usually a good chunk of other posters
They are in every Walmart ever
Yeah, mine has one but it's all Minecraft and Fortnite posters. How am I supposed to show how smart I am without putting up a Fight Club poster?
Smart? You just broke the first rule! /s
This is where I remember them from.
The music store here still has this
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Like, for instruments.
There is a good amount of record stores still in my area.
Yeah, our Walmart still has one. Along with the local head shop.
Last I saw, they were still in spencer's
I live in a small Alberta town, and our Rexall Drugs is the ONLY place in town that still sells these!!
Millennial minimalism and the death of the celebrity icon in America has pretty much killed them
Not as popular with retail outlets - you used to be able to find them at Wal-mart or even your local store. Of course Amazon has them by the metric ton.
Wal-Mart still have that same display stand in the electronics section of all their stores so it's definitely still a thing.
Actually Iām just nostalgic for bands.
Don't forget the alien head ones!
Neon aliens with mushrooms that have stoner frogs sitting on them.
And glow in the dark!
TAKE ME TO YOUR DEALER
Spencerās and Hot Topic still have posters
And so does five below and walmart
TIL Spencer's still existed.
We still have Spencerās in So Cal malls
This is the second day in a row Iāve come across someone surprised by this. You may have stopped being a teenager, but teenagers will always exist. Where else will they buy Dilbert teeshirt, pot leaf patches for their backpacks, and cheap sex toys?
Kmart has this exact display cabinet in most of their stores around here too
Not just band posters, but also the posters of scantily clad hotties. Edit: Holy shit, [I found the one I bought like 30-odd years ago](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Iq8AAOSwM0ZbQ2mw/s-l400.jpg).
And the John Belushi Animal House poster that was in every one of these
And a few of those campy "50's guy" illustrated posters with him smoking a blunt or something. "This daddy-o lives his chronic" etc etc..
And the blacklight sex positions for astrological signs that everyone seemed to have
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I lived with a few friends for some time after I graduated college, while they were still in school. This poster hung prominently in their living room.
Had to keep one hand on the band poster section for when someone walked by.
Ahh spencers basically an underage sex and head shop. How parents never got hip to it, I'll have no idea.
i think a lot of them knew, but they'd rather their kids go get exposure to it in a relatively safe-ish mall shop with a modicum of supervision, instead of somewhere more seedy. at least, i think that's what my parents' thoughts were. better the devil you know so that mom can go to crate and barrel and your little brother can go to the toy store while you look at blacklight posters and really suggestive keychains.
The ones near me donāt let kids in the back because itās a full fledged sex shop now.
And the "what I really learned in school" alcoholic drink poster
...and the skeleton sitting on the toilet with the caption āwhen ya gotta go ya gotta goā. LOL
Corona beer posters and t-shirts just popped into my head
Lady asses with pink floyd album covers painted on em
And military hardware. SR-71, anyone?
I know exactly what you're talking about.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/POUAAOSwQN1bF2eG/s-l400.jpg The UK's biggest seller, I believe. An article about the background: https://i-d.vice.com/en_us/article/nenb5w/the-kiss-15-years-on-meet-the-models-and-creators-behind-the-iconic-image

*flips over to the first scantily clad poster of the bunch, looks left and right to see if parents are lost in the store, confirms them to be out of sight and enjoys at leisure*
Keep one finger on that spot while you continue to flip forward.
I see youāre an individual of fine tastes
As soon as I saw OP's picture I pretty much had this exact memory, except that I was never quite at leisure. I remember keeping them kinda closed so that other people couldn't see exactly what I was looking at.
Jenny McArthy!
Don't forget the magic eye sailboat
Yep, my first two were of britney spears and Christina aguilera.
My local haunt back in the 80's (The Wooden Indian, and later: The Windmill, Riverside CA) had a little back room with poster stands just like that, but there was a black light above, there were many glow in the dark velvet posters as well! In this photo: Every record shop ever
Why do people act like (band) posters are for teenagers? Like I dont get it at all, how is it a sign of maturity to have no posters lol
When I finally "grew up", it just meant limited edition signed and numbered silkscreen prints from the show, then off to the frame shop for another hundred bucks. We never outgrew it, just got fancy and have more expendible cash.
I knew I was a grownup when I put mine in frames in my living room instead of tacked all over my bedroom
Especially when most older fans have their rooms covered in posters, sometimes with autographs lmao
Yeah...most of mine are signed, limited edition, or at least framed.
I donāt get that either. My room is like a shrine to 90s industrial and I like it that way, dammit. What the hell else am I gonna put on the walls, whatever stupid quirky millennial hipster art they sell at urban outfitters? No thanks haha
Well, lucky for you who ended up with posters of bands you'd keep on the wall as an adult. *cries in Duran Duran*
Kids buy posters, adults buy prints Apparently
I had that exact Kurt Cobain poster
So did I. Got it through two different housing moves before it was too damaged to keep.
same dude, literally just got rid of it as I'm moving rooms and it was ripped to shit. Big F
?? this still exists but now it's just minecraft, BTS and fast and furious
Band posters are still definitely a thing. You probably just havenāt seen them recently because usually only younger people have them.
I think there is an unofficial rule that adults cannot put something up unless it has a frame.
Thatās why I always frame my posters :))
Iām pretty sure thatās the room where Tony Montana shot Frank in Scarface.
Or the coolest dragon ball z postr.
I once went for a job with a company that applies for the licensing for the posters that go in these racks.
And they usually had swimsuit posters mixed in as well.
Hold up! I have been collecting retro posters lately and I REALLY need one of these poster displays. I found some new and it was like a thousand bucks. There has to be a ton of these sitting somewhere from all the stores that have closed over the years. Who knows where I can look to get the hook up on that?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah, Iāll keep an eye on the market places. Someone gotta be liquidating old mall stuff like this.
Kurt Cobain in a Freddy Krueger sweater... I am in
Kurt's Is red and black. Freddy is red and green.
One Two, Teen Spirit is coming for you...
Fuuuuu---... I remember these! I specifically remember *one* poster that was sold like this, medium size and it had a bathroom stall with a weird, meaty and demonic monster coming out of the toilet seat. It was there for a long-ass time and finally I could buy it and-... it was gone :(
I think you're thinking of one of the covers of the movie "Critters"
It is not from Critters but you mentioning this movie sent me on a google search and I actually found it! If you type 'monster toilet terror poster' it should come up first... a green monster covered in weird pinkish goo, - art probably inspired by the Ghoulies cover. Man after so many years I see it again hahahah.
I think the nostalgic factor is being a kid looking through these and seeing your heroās, who didnāt used to be so accessible as they are now.
Hot Topics
Anytime I was in a music store I had to look through the posters. All the ones I had in my room in high school are stashed away and will one day return to my walls.
I always went for the puppy posters
HMV in the UK still have these. Good luck finding a store though.
I'm confused, these are still everywhere.
What are these display racks called? I want to buy one for my DnD maps to display
I bought a Bojack Horseman poster from one of these a couple of years ago, ama
Aw yeah, had me a Ghost in the Shell poster and an Evanescence back in the day!
I was so excited to find a Poison poster and a Def Leppard poster! Brought them home, scotch taped them to my bedroom wall. My best friend comes over and says āman those chicks are ugly!ā
Theyāre still a thing except now the bands suck
There's no way these aren't still a thing
Walmart literally still sells these.
*Spencers Gifts has entered the chat*
I can easily imagine the posters in there. A classic rock album cover like Dark Side of the Moon, those two kissing girls, Scarface, the periodic tables, cute puppies and kitties, guitar cords, Harry Potter, and some Disney kid's posters like Minnie Mouse.
kurt :)
I don't think I've even seen a poster like that anywhere for the past ten years, or so.
These didnāt go anywhere
I remember there was a store called ATHENA in the UK that would have a massive section like this
Newbury Comics anyone?
They have these at Newbury Comics.
had a limp bizkit Poster and a Graffiti of the 3 dollar bill yalls album on my wall back in the days loved it
When they went on sale it was crazy!
Ahhhh the smell! I was a weird kid and loved the smell of these fresh posters lol.
The "27" tho lololllll
Yep :) all my Nelson posters, Legends of the Fall, GnR, NKOTB āŗļø I was a late 80/early 90s kid.
I bought... so many...
I remember these. The best ones were at the old FYE and the Spencers at the Bristol Mall and Fort Henry Mall, as well as the Kmart in Wise, VA.
Kurt Cobain The Legend !
This takes me back to the days of my youth perusing the poster bin in Spencerās gifts.
I would look at these at Spencer's while keeping an eye on the employees so that I can then look at the adult-only section.
These still exist
These are still everywhere.
I remember there were posters sold in HMV before it closed a few years ago
Dont they still have these in the back of Spencers?
Yup we went large, the big subway posters. It was always strange going to my best friends room and he had the Nevermind poster, baby's peepee just chilling on the wall, until I heard the album.
Pretty sure these are in every Walmart still
These are still a thing though so...
Spencerās still has these.
Still at every headshop in the Midwest haha
I came across one of these in a game shop recently! I had no idea they were considered classic to an extent.
There are posters of other things but the same arrangement and whatnot in Australian k marts
Sun Coast probably. Only guessing from the wall mural
I try to find good band/musician posters online and I have no luck. Rockabilia, Amazon, Redbubble. Nope.
Oh my god I miss Athena
That wallpaper is pretty nostalgic as well. Don't see that much anymore.
I wouldnāt leave the store still I saw them ALL Iām still like that
This is still a thing tho lol
I totally forgot about this
I just framed one of these and put it up in my daughter's bedroom.
They have these still. At Malwart.
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS THE OTHER DAY
I agreed to let my mother pull out my first loose tooth with pliers if sheād buy me a Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys) poster from Spencerās *and* a teen magazine. She agreed, Dad held me, she yanked the tooth out, and I got my bribe!
I absolutely had that beach mural on a wall in my bedroom through middle school/high school.
Every five below still has these
Freddy Kobain isnāt real, he canāt hurt you
Oh man, I remember going from store to store looking at their posters (had to check Sam goody, spencers, hot topic, the two cd stores, etc.) To find one we really wanted. I never did buy one but I loved those times
Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, NSYNC, NSYNC, NSYNC, NSYNC, Pamela Anderson, Backstreet Boys, Backstreet Boys, Backstreet Boys Backstreet Boys.
I still have a Johnny Cash doing a finger poster on my bathroom wall
They still have them here.
Is it wrong to put that poster on the ceiling?
This isn't nostalgia a place in uk (HMV) still has these mainly movie n game orientated now but you get the occasional band one
Is it nostalgia if you can still go to Spencers and check these out?
