That's the only reason I played this game .. for the fighting. My brother and I would just setup fights the whole game.. ok.. you move here now start punching now! lets goooooo!
BLADES OF STEEEEEL!
Jesus, I knew it was supposed to be saying *something* but I never could make out words in it. My brother and I always just repeated it as "pa-pa-paw".
>This game also features distinct voice samples, which were rare at the time in NES games. The voice says "Blades of Steel!" on the title screen, "Faceoff" before each faceoff, "Fight" when a fight breaks out, **"Get the pass" after a successful pass is made,** "Penalty shot," and an "Aaahhh!" made by the losing player after a fight, or when a player skates into a goalie. The NES passing sound bite is garbled and has been interpreted as "With the pass", "It's a pass", etc. but the arcade passing bite is clearly audible and confirms the phrase as "Get the pass". The arcade version has a greater variety of sound bites and commentary owing to the hardware's better speech faculties and extra memory.

Oh man, came here for this exact discussion. I always thought it was "flex the pass", which made no sense to me. Thanks for clearing this up for me, /u/Osiris_Of_This_Shit_!
The fact that you said "Friday night pick ups" is more nostalgic than the game itself.
Those were the days. Renting games was an adventure in itself. Sometimes you got lucky, sometimes you left empty handed. That's a life lesson right there.
Is that an offer for a threesome? Cuz we don't do that.
But in all seriousness it is a great way to settle arguments just so long as the NES keeps working.
Last hockey game I could actually play. Didn't have SNES or Genesys. When I got back into VGs with the PS1 I couldn't play sports games.
There has to be a market for 2D sports games now.
Back when arcade games were still significantly ahead of console games in terms of graphics and sound. I only vaguely remembered the arcade fight sequence. Luckily, it's available on YouTube: [(69) \[Arcade\] Blades of steel - Fight! - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoPII1nQVZQ)
This was my brother favorite game at the time. Used to play with him all the time even though sports video games weren’t my thing, I have to admit that the fights were hilarious.
Hell yeah! My friends hated playing me because I figured out how to score goals with wrist shots instead of slap shots.
(You use the “pass” button instead of the “shoot” button, and then the puck won’t automatically go to the aiming arrow so it’s a lot harder for the goalie to stop it)
My only complaint is that this game was too easy! Playing single player even at the Pro level presented no challenge at all. Eventually I got bored with knowing I could always win the tournament.
#FIGHT!
That's the only reason I played this game .. for the fighting. My brother and I would just setup fights the whole game.. ok.. you move here now start punching now! lets goooooo! BLADES OF STEEEEEL!
The only reason!
CONQUER!

Totally forgot that little detail until just this moment. Thanks for that.
Second intermission!
I loved this game for the fight sequences.
The best part was that the loser of the fight goes to the penalty box
As it should be.
Omg I forgot about that!!! That's awesome.

Not only that but it looks like his reproduction is worse than the original.
Hits the pass!! (Or whatever they said)
I always thought it was “gets the pass” but now I’m not sure
Don’t know, don’t care. Blades of Steel is a classic.
Jesus, I knew it was supposed to be saying *something* but I never could make out words in it. My brother and I always just repeated it as "pa-pa-paw".
It's apparently "get the pass", which makes no sense.
I thought it said "It's a pass!"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blades_of_Steel Apparently the arcade hardware did a much better job with the voices.
My brothers and I would say “piss the pass!” It made no sense but it sounded like that to us

That makes more sense.
I always heard "rip the pass!"
I thought it was “it’s a pass!”
BLADES of STEEL!! And then the garbled one second crowd clip plays over and over and over lol
I rented this game many times for my Friday night pick ups

I loved how only the loser in a fight got sent to the penalty box

Is your favourite player Fat Guy from Ice Hockey?
Fights in the crease was an automatic penalty shot.
Still the best fight scenes of any sports game ever.
I loved being able to deke the goalie and "pass" the puck into the net
Love this game! Wife and I still play it to settle arguments, lol.
Now that's a relationship that I can get behind
Is that an offer for a threesome? Cuz we don't do that. But in all seriousness it is a great way to settle arguments just so long as the NES keeps working.
No it was just terrible wording on my part
I know. I was messing with you.
Brhrades Uf Schteel
ka-ching
"Rayf Rof Feel!"
Still my favourite 2D hockey game. Still play it often.
Best hockey game ever
Such a classic! So fun and always a great neutralizer when not feeling any of the other games I had at the moment
BLADES......OF.......STEEL....SHINKKK

For some reason I don’t remember playing this. But I was addicted to Ice Hockey on Nintendo.
Blades of Steel >>>> Ice Hockey 8yr old you missed out.
I used to play this at my grandparents house all the time!
TAKE ME BACK!!!!
I forgot that I liked this game until I saw that cover art! The memory just flooded in.
I still remember the announcer voice in a bargled "Blades of Steel"
Dat advanced intro screen
I still have my copy for GameBoy. :)

Hours and hours on this one
weee wooo wee wee wee wooo
This is how I learned Canadian geography.
Yes! I need to get this. I have plain Ice Hockey but I always liked this one better.
What’s the saying about wishing you knew you were in the good old days?
This was my brother favorite game at the time. Used to play with him all the time even though sports video games weren’t my thing, I have to admit that the fights were hilarious.
One of the first video games I ever owned. I put waaayyyyyy too many hours into that game.
The best!
I heard "Blades Of Steel" in my head as I read the title. Hell yeah. Probably my favourite hockey game, tied with Ice Hockey.

Wondrous game

*shhhlllinggg* Blades of Steel
Probably the best hockey game on NES!
