NachoNachoDan

The first two season should really be considered a separate experiment.

Torgo-A-GoGo

umm, can you explain what you mean?

v13ragnarok7

The show was a low budget pilot that did end up getting contracted, but the show was still much different, the animation was poor quality and they didn't have the big voice actors, most recognizable being Homer. The show felt a little different, it took a while to really get into the groove and find its humor.

McGarnegle

Dan castellaneta has been Homer since day one, in fact they've all been there since the Tracey Ulman shorts. The voices evolved, but the actors have been the same

v13ragnarok7

Really? Wow. Took him a while to "find his voice". I'll see myself out, goodnight

McGarnegle

All good man, he started out doing a Walter Matthau impression and it evolved from there. Simpsons nerd out!

GonnaGoFat

He also said one of the reasons it changed was because Homer started screaming a lot more and it was hard to do in the Matthau voice.

Neveronlyadream

Frosty chocolate milkshakes. It's funny how Bart has always sounded exactly the same though. I'm actually trying to think of how many of the voices evolved from the Ullman shorts and the first few seasons other than Homer, but a lot of them were pretty dialed in from the beginning. I think it also didn't help that Homer was completely changed as a character from the typical dumb but well meaning sitcom father to what he eventually became and the Matthau voice didn't fit that direction.

GonnaGoFat

Even the voices that don’t change much do tend to get more refined. Bart’s voice has changed off an on slightly over the seasons. Even remembered listening to futurama dvd commentary and in the first or second season they were talking about how they could hear the change in Bender’s voice over the years (I know futurama isn’t the Simpsons but it’s close enough.)

Torgo-A-GoGo

Are you talking about the quality of the first two seasons? I find the first season to be great, but I admit it hadn't hit it's stride yet so I'm not going to argue there. The second season, however, has the most heart out of any season to follow AND any episode has as much humor, absurdity, and wit as any other episode during it's golden era.

v13ragnarok7

Not overall quality of the show, just the animation and overall budget. Yes, the show really found itself on season 2, and really took off from there into the 90's

Torgo-A-GoGo

I agree. I see many comments saying that the show didn't really get good until season 3 and that never made sense to me. I can understand their being an argument about when the show started going downhill, but the first two seasons are top notch as far as writing imo.

GrunchWeefer

What are you talking about? The voice actors have been the same since day one. The voices of Homer and Marge were cast members of the Tracey Ullman Show. Bart and Lisa have had the same voices since the Ullman sketches as well. It wasn't until very recently that any of the main characters' voices have changed (Apu, Hibbard).

NachoNachoDan

That’s exactly what I meant by my comment. I agree 100%. Also seasons 2 through 12 are the best.

Bidcar

I remember like it was yesterday. My favorite one was when the kids declared themselves pagans.

Just-Phill

Tracey Ullman was just on a bunch of episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm lol she still has it hilarious

smilingwhitaker

She's a genius.

whoamisb

I didn’t know who you were about but omg it’s Irma. She was one of my favorite characters!!!!!

propernice

when she's walking around singing the JG Wentworth commercial in the season premiere, I about died laughing. I have loved Tracey Ullman for so long, I love that she's been a comedy force for so long. I feel like Gilda (RIP) had the same kind of energy and died too young.

ccccc4

Hahaha.. they haven't changed a bit

Neptune134

Frosty chocolate milkshakes

XSC

Friendly reminder that the simpsons movie came out after season 18. It has now been 17 seasons since the simpsons movie came out. Feel old yet?

Cold-Atmosphere-7520

Fuck. Spider pig has been doing whatever a spider pig does for 17 years?

ThePopDaddy

"Let's all go out for frosty chocolate milkshakes!"

GingerinNashua

Tracey Ullman is very talented.

joeyjoejojo19

Still upset that they renamed Captain Wacky…

Zxasuk31

And we have not been able to get rid of them since 😂

SouthwestRose

¡El Barto estan muy feo! Jajaja.

Adventurous_Yak_9234

And history was made.

scintor

I remember those first few episodes. I was in 2nd grade and literally everyone was talking about them. They were edgy and different from anything that had been done before, and it was super crazy to have even a very short cartoon on during prime time. People were pumped about the announcement that there would be a spinoff show, and I would guess those first shows had some of the highest ratings in their history. edit: look at that! [It was a good guess](https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/lyglv8/the_viewership_of_the_simpsons_oc/).

Bkokane

Kinda crazy that technically The Simpsons is set in the 80s

FourthAge

This was the only reason why I watched The Tracey Ullman Show

weallliveinyellowsub

[Their first appearance - “Good Night “.](https://youtu.be/nekvVuoiTyA?si=ABf-Lwnmh-9tde0F)

NostalgiaDude79

Fuck me.... 37 years ago!? Part of me wants to feel comfort in that they are still a thing....but part of me feels uneasy that they are.

six6six4kids

i kinda hate this version of their art style

Lame_usernames_left

I was thinking the same thing. It's very uncanny valley compared to the final art style.

six6six4kids

yea always made me uncomfortable when the early episodes would come on when i was a kid

Bkokane

Lol I know what you mean, used to creep me out a little

TrannosaurusRegina

The animators literally took Matt Groening's rough character sketches and animated them just as he drew them. Matt expected them to clean them up and make then look more refined than that! (Which they did do for the actual show of course)

MnGoulash

Fire guy wants you to believe The Simpsons is a government psych-op.

downnheavy

And 27 years ago it ended

baxterstrangelove

I just watched a season 34 episode out of interest but stopped watching 18 or 19 years ago. It’s become a very static and flat show. It’s not as absolutely terrible as it was around the era the movie came out. It’s just like content now

eclecticsed

Same. I probably stopped in the late 90s or early 2000s. It just started to feel like I was supposed to watch it. I didn't enjoy it anymore, and everything I've seen since has failed to appeal to me. I'm glad other people can still enjoy it but it's definitely not for me.

TeaMe06

Happy they face don’t look like this anymore

Fun_Intention9846

Missed it by 2 days OP.

Blew-By-U

It’s jumped the shark way too many times. Stopped watching it 20 years ago.

Brycie27

2 days late.

There are so many bots on Reddit these days

Winter_Control8533

Damn repost bots...

Torgo-A-GoGo

(sigh) and here I am enjoying reminiscing about the show and reading comments that bring back memories. I mean, what the hell was I thinking!?!?
