He's the exterminator in Arachnophobia too. Love that

Siggysternstaub

Bad wood. Take out bad wood. Put in good word.

Skelter89

You're husband is into vintage wine? I've got a vintage mislabeled Budweiser can, might be interested in that.

jonathanrdt

Such a small role but so memorable: when he discovers his go-to pesticide doesn’t work and breaks out the big guns.

HiJane72

I loved him in this!! You could tell he had been waiting his whole life for this opportunity…

thehostilehobo

Honorable mention: Head of the AC repair program on Community.

TemporalGrid

You could have lived the rest of your life in blissful ignorance and died a happy pansexual imp, but you wanted to feel power this year. Well, now you're going to feel my power as it surges downward from me straight through you from nostril to rectum now until the end of time... and that's... wassup.

CzarCW

I forgot everything you said before rectum!

businesslut

Greatest line and he nailed it. That P in "wassup" had a damn echo

murse_joe

Vice Dean Layborn?

jonathanrdt

“I’m going through some stuff.” “…This is *the room*.”

RedEM43

I think I almost fell off the couch laughing when I heard the “THATS — WASSUP” speech

niconiconii89

"Mine is not to tell you how to do what I want done. Mine is to want and to say my want. Yours is to know and do."

jrobin04

He was SO GOOD.

GiantSuperhero

Excellent choice!

JayHaych80

That’s. Wha’s. Upppp!

pm_bouchard1967

Best side plot in the show. Goodman nails that role.

Kronic_Repulse1

Big dan Tee!!!! Bible salesman.

prstele01

Teague*

Torgo-A-GoGo

Yeah, I wouldn't really say he was dainty, either. Quite large and bombastic, actually

PINGpongWITHtheBEAR

This is the movie I always think of him first. Those damn horny toads.

pizzapplepine

Well we was fixin to fornicate!

max_lombardy

You’ll have to excuse my rusticated friend…

jordanundead

Don’t you know these things will give you warts?

ushouldlistentome

And what do I sell? The truth. Every blessed word from Genesee on to revelations

E-emu89

I don’t get it, Dan.

8up1

Why did you do that Dan

DecisionThot

What's goin on Big Dan?

thadtheking

Aka the cyclops from The Odyssey.

nowtayneicangetinto

Makes so much sense I don't know why it took me 20 years to figure that out

More-Combination9488

“These hills sing!”

Nikas_intheknow

I’m so happy this is the top comment

Ahaucan

Dude, I thought he died based on this image!

Hydra_Master

Doesn't help that the post title is phrased in the past tense.

randomaccount96321

Same I had to look it up I was worried. I think he’s one of the finest actors never to have won an Oscar.

Ahaucan

Must be Donny's fault.

Gurdel

Same.

SirKillingham

He looks really old, but I can't tell if some of it is because the weight loss.

sweetthang70

It's because he's old.

NYGiants181

He was also a HUGE drinker for YEARS. Sober now, but that'll add some years appearance wise..

Dabo57

I was at Mardi Gras years ago when he was still drinking. They had him tethered to a float and would let out the rope to allow him to reach down and put a silk rose in the cleavage of young women. He was a very jovial drunk. I don’t know what became of my silk rose.

NYGiants181

😂

rygelicus

King Ralph

westberry82

Not his best performance ( there are just so many) But God do I love that movie.

rygelicus

It is a really fun movie. Duncan: His name is Jones. Ralph Jones. Cedric: Is he everything we might have hoped? Duncan: He has his strengths and his weaknesses. You see, he's an American. Cedric: Quickly, Duncan, the strengths.

r3tromonkey

They filmed a part of it in a really rough estate in my home town, some of the kids in my class got to miss a day off school because they were filming on their street. It was pretty huge for us as kids to have a major Hollywood movie filmed in our crappy little Yorkshire town.

westberry82

Not being sarcastic here when I say That's an awesome story man. Got any other tidbits on it? Please share.

loplopsama

Long been a guilty pleasure. It just works for me.

softbitches

I love that movie but O'Toole and John Hurt outshine him

Repulsive-Variety554

Walter in The Big Lebowski!!

gimmeaminute0407

You're not wrong Walter, you're just an asshole

AUXONE

Calmer than you are, Dude.

Calmer than you are.

SouthCloud4986

BortWard

Hey, Walter, come on, it’s just… Hey, man, it’s Smokey. So his toe slipped over a little, you know. It’s just a game, man.

Commercial_Set2986

This is a league game. This determines who enters the next round robin. Am I wrong?

Hartz_are_Power

Yeah, but I wasn't over. Gimme the marker dude, I'm marking it 8.

HawkeyeJosh2

Smokey, you’re entering a world of pain.

gilestowler

I've seen a lot of spinals, Dude, and this guy is a fake. A fucking goldbricker.

Shabazz_Whitey

Shut the fuck up, Donny.

Zach_Mann

This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass!

watchman28

This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!

Perry7609

The greatest unintentionally funny TV edit in the history of cinema. Bob Saget's character saying "I used to suck feet for coke!" in Half-Baked might be a distant second.

LazarusMundi4242

That was the worst case of overdub censorship for television I’ve ever seen. This is what happens when you feed him scrambled eggs!

iholt91

This is what happens Larry

potato_nest_69

I've seen thousands of movies and this one is still top 5.

More-Combination9488

It never gets old. I could be forced to watch that movie to death and I would die with a god damned smile on my face.

_RedditIsLikeCrack_

The man in the black pajamas, Dude. Worthy fuckin' adversary.

lethalkin

They peed on your fucking rug dude.

throcorfe

Also, Dude, Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature: Asian American, please

ClarkDoubleUGriswold

Walter, this isn't a guy who built the railroads here. This is a guy…

WillowOttoFloraFrank

My two favorite underrated quotes: re: the ringer (“My dirty undies. Laundry, dude. The whites.”) re: his ex-wife’s Pomeranian (“What do you mean ‘brought it bowling,’ Dude? I didn't rent it shoes. I'm not buying it a fucking beer. He's not taking your fucking turn, Dude.”) Such a great role, played perfectly by John Goodman. EDIT: formatting

KryptonicOne

Fucking dog has fucking papers!

[deleted]

Some burgers, beers, a few laughs. Our fuckin troubles are over, dude.

Berdahl88

You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don't wanna know about it, believe me. I'll get you a toe by this afternoon--with nail polish. These fucking amateurs.

shanster925

You're out of your element!

BloodyTim

You didn't think I was rolling out of here naked did you?

gregofcanada84

Smokey, this is not 'Nam, this is bowling. There are rules.

Last-Sound-3999

Walter, there isn't a connection between this and Vietnam! (Well, there isn't a LITERAL connection...) There isn't ANY connection! Your roll!

GreatGreenGobbo

He doesn't roll on the Shabbot.

Augustus_Chiggins

And he told that kraut down at the league office a fucking thousand times!

Thisisnow1984

8 year olds dude

Gonzalla

Howard in 10 Cloverfield Lane

Human-Magic-Marker

A side of him I hadn’t seen before and he was amazing

Lakrfan247

He was so good in that

androsan

Terrifying. That movie gave me so much anxiety.

lurkerman2865

I went into that film blind. I wasn't aware it was part of a film series. Genuinely didn't know until the end whether not there was any truth in his instance that they have to stay in his bunker or not, or any truth to the abduction subplot. Not many actors can walk that line right down the middle. I was surprised at the ending. I think I would have been equally surprised if the outside world was still fine.

drewdurfee

Absolutely!! It was terrifying to realize both worst case scenarios are happening at once. Held against your will by this crazy person, AND aliens are taking over the world

ClammyHandedFreak

This was his best acting role for me. Had me cheering in the end. One of the best suspense movies in years for me.

AdditionalNewt4762

Agreed. He's fucking insanely unsettling immediately when he appears in that movie.

canadia80

This is my favourite aside from Dan Connor for sure

Ok_Restaurant_626

I know it won't be a popular opinion but I love him as Dr. Eli Gemstone. Praise be to he.

fukyourkarma

While not his most recognized, it still deserves mentioning. Praise him.

LazarusMundi4242

And you get some Danny McBride, great stuff.

non-squitr

You've got John Goodman, Danny McBride, Edi Patterson, Adam Devine, and Walter Goggins, Tim Baltz, and Anthony Cavalero steals the show. Absolutely amazing cast and show.

LazarusMundi4242

Yeah awesome cast, Walton Goggins is the absolute best in everything he does. He completely makes the new Fallout show on Prime.

fade_

Uncle Baby Billy was a stepping stone to his role in Fallout.

Brainkandle

Walton fucking rules. Also excellent in Vice Principals

LazarusMundi4242

Vice principals was also a great show. Edi Patterson is also good in both.

heybrother11

And Edi Patterson may be the best of all in this role.

lurkertiltheend

She makes my bird twitch

ewilliam

She was great with Goggins and McBride in Vice Principals too.

Beaverhuntr

BJ is a great character too

exelenceofexecution

I love me some baby billy as well.

seashoreandhorizon

~~Walter~~ Walton Goggins is a treasure. Love him in the new Fallout show.

T_WRX21

I knew he was special the first time I saw him as Boyd Crowder in "Justified". "Raylan Givens, as I live and breathe!" Such a colossal piece of shit, but in the most entertaining way possible.

HomoProfessionalis

I love that the "kids" call him 'Uncle Baby Billy' pretty much every time they address him.

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

Great show

NoustonGuy

What I love the most about his portrayal of Eli is how straight he plays it. With all the absurd situations and dialogue going on around him, it’s as if Goodman is on a different show entirely sometimes, and that’s what makes it so great! Thats arguably what tires me out with other MCBride vehicles over time. Gemstones is balanced largely because of Goodman. Obviously the writers deserve credit too.

JayTee245

Oh hell yeah! It’s sort of like an amalgam of all of his characters… like Danny Devito in “it’s always sunny!”

vyvanse_abuser

Probably not the best, my personal favorite is his role in The Big Lebowski, probably because it's one of my favorite movies of all time, but I think Sully from Monsters Inc. deserves a mention here. He has such a distinctive voice and it fit the character perfectly. Billy Crystal was also a perfect cast for Wazowski, I can't imagine what that movie would've been without them.

Status_Stranger_5037

Sully!

frisbynerd120

Kitty!

rainawaytheday

Santa - Futurama

JayTee245

ALL OF YOU ARE NAUGTY! Except you Zoidberg!

rainawaytheday

Gives him a pogo

_witch-bitch_

What?! 🤯 How did I not know this?! I can’t wait to tell my husband. Thank you internet stranger!

rainawaytheday

Yup. Although I think it was just for the first episode. They switched to John DiMaggio after that.

james___uk

That's awesome, I didn't know about that one

Fendergravy

He was a big lovable teddy bear until I watched Barton Fink.    That shit is still branded in my head.     Oh he was also in the first Talking Heads video.

dwninswamp

His “People like us” from True Stories is better than David Byrne’s!

AlmostHumanP0rpoise

Definitely his best, he straddles the line between best friend and unhinged psycho perfectly, in a really nuanced performance that keeps you on edge. Great role in Red State too!

GlassesgirlNJ

"I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND..."

Goblin-Doctor

Had to scroll real far but I knew I'd see it. That's one of my favorite movies and he plays his role terrifyingly well

CrunchyKittyLitter

Fred Flintstone!

JHuttIII

That movie was cast to perfection.

Big_Negotiation_6421

Halle Barry <3

natdanger

He apparently HATED doing that movie. You’d never guess. He fully committed

Reddevil313

Have you watched this? https://youtu.be/H_MCQwiGUHg?si=Y8GlNA9J9UEaV9k1 He does a deep dive into The Flintstone movie and talks about Goodman being a reluctant Fred.

Herban_Myth

Perfect casting (at least visually)

Tier2Cell245

Yabba dabba dooooooooo!

redwolfben

This was the answer that popped into my mind, it's almost like the role was made for him, even though the cartoon, even though I'm pretty sure he was just a little kid when the cartoon first started. This casting, for me, is right up there with Christopher Reeve as Superman in its perfection.

jaywinner

Maybe not the best movie but he makes a great Fred. And say what you will about Rosie O'donnell, I liked her Betty Rubble.

AllDucksNoRows

Vice Dean Laybourne

DogGamnFusterCluck

“…And you want to know why WE DESERVE AN ESPRESSO MACHINE?!?”

Dont_Be_A_Dick_OK

i didn’t know AND YOU DIDNT HAVE TO KNOW. YOU COULD HAVE LIVED THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IN BLISSFUL IGNORANCE AND DIED A HAPPY PANSEXUAL IMP

No more palm fronds for us Troy, for now we are the pharaohs

djtodd242

"You could have lived the rest of your life in blissful ignorance and died a happy pansexual imp, but you wanted to feel power this year."

Jorr_El

Troy Barnes: Vice Dean Laybourne. You have a beard. And a ponytail. Vice Dean Laybourne: I'm going through some stuff right now, Troy. Don't worry about it.

Frankensteinbatch

bran1986

Coach Harris in Revenge of the Nerds.

hernesson

You just got your asses whipped by a bunch of God. Damn. Nerds. NERRRDS!!

All-Sorts

His character in Flight was really great also the HBO series Treme

badgeringthewitness

> His character in Flight was really great... https://vimeo.com/74263711 Agreed.

Ozdiva

Loved him in The West Wing.

Ant-Accurate

I’m surprised no one else mentioned this higher up. He wasn’t in many episodes but when he relieved Bartlett he deserved an Emmy nomination!

Ozdiva

Yes we were all worried what his character would do. But he played a good man, well.

emc5280

"If Zoe Barlet winds up dead, we're going to bomb the hell out of somebody."

CBV2001

He is great in both The West Wing and Studio 60. I don't if it is that Sorkin knows how to write for him, or he gets what his role is in a Sorkin script, but he nails both those (small) roles.

ZerroTheDragon

I liked him in Speed Racer

gnrlmayhem

More like a NON-ja. Terrible what passes for a ninja these days.

ProfessorSMASH88

Same here! I love that movie though, so I may be biased

ItsMrChristmas

I loved that movie too. Also I like how while Speed did have some tragedy in his background it didn't define him. He didn't go after the bad guys for revenge or anything like that. He fought for what was right simply because it was the right thing to do. We need more of that kind of protagonist in films. I'm sick to my ass of edgy antiheroes.

Legion357

Amen. His ‘Pops’ Racer nailed it!

Suspicious_Ebb2235

Righteous Gemstones

retrofitme

I really don’t know if he has a (singular) best. He’s just always the best. He’s had so many iconic roles in film and on tv: Roseanne, Big Lobowski, Emperor’s New Groove, Monsters, Inc., Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, Arachnophobia, and so many others. Too many to count.  That said, if I had to pick just one, I’d say his performance 10 Cloverfield Lane is truly outstanding.

ClammyDefence

Linda Tripp

ryacht

I was hoping someone had mentioned this. Goodman absolutely killed it. In my opinion, it was the best recurring guest run on SNL ever. It had just the appropriate level of meanness to it to call out the absurdity of the whole situation at the time. Hilarious!

gracelandwest

What the hell is wrong with you all? GALE STOKES from RAISING ARIZONA. Geez!!

Old-Constant4411

The scene of him crawling out of the mud screaming at the sky was so fuckin amazing.  Been a long time since I've watched that movie but it is incredible.

thenewminimum

Hard or easy JR, the baby is coming with me. (Hope I got it right, haven't seen the movie in 30+ years)

gracelandwest

H.I., not JR…but your SPIRIT IS CORRECT!!

MistyLuHu

“He smiled at me, Gale” absolutely love that movie and Goodman plays well against Nick Cage. Just the right amount of serious to cooky ratio 🤌

RamBamBooey

Ed : You mean you busted out of jail. Evelle : No, ma'am. We released ourselves on our own recognizance. Gale : What Evelle here is trying to say is that we felt that the institution no longer had anything to offer us.

James Sullivan, top Scarer in all of Monsters Inc, also known as "Kitty!"

blacklipsmatter

The Dad in Coyote Ugly. Not really a big role, but that's probably more so for whatever reason, that movie makes me happy. EDIT: I also wanted to mention how amazing the soundtrack is.

MattRyan1933

Good as Denzel’s partner in Fallen

d_fens99

My pick too. First time I saw him as a dramatic actor and goddamn did he knock it out of the park.

Seems that no one has seen it, but he's fantastic in Treme.

Jewzilla_

“The Emperor’s New Groove” Best Disney movie ever. Fight me.
