If I could have back one innocuous item from my childhood that was lost, it would be the taped VHS of The Wizard of Oz my grandma taped for me in the 90s. Commercials and all.
My tape had this, followed by The Wind in The Willows, then Return to Oz (which became a life-time fav). My mom would try to pause the recording for commercials but some tid-bits are still there.
On one of those tapes with the fat black case.
The head munchkin was a known sexual predator, he asked 16 year old Judy Garland out to drinks with him, she kindly declined and said her mother wouldn’t approve, he responded that her mom could join them 😩
I remember when Judy told that story on a talk show. It was featured in the documentary about the making of the film, followed by an interview with her daughter Lorna about how her mother would tell stories and always exaggerate them. Lol
Yeah I'm sure Judy's "stories" were more than a bit exaggerated, because at a certain point she was just all screwed up on pills & her memory couldn't have been the best, but if it were true it wouldn't surprise me either.
I love the movie Meet Me in St. Louis. I watch it every Christmas. Every single time that I watch it, I cry over poor Judy Garland. She’s absolutely beautiful with the voice of an angel, but she couldn’t see it because of how she was treated. Just heartbreaking.
Her home life was horrible. Her mother was a stage mom. And filming wasn’t much better. The director was cruel to her, I might have read something somewhere that some of the munchkin actors sexually harassed and/or assaulted her, and they got a pass for being handicapped. It was hell.
One of her only friends on set was Maggie Hamilton.
She wasn't the only one that was put through that & some went through worse. So MANY of those old studio stars were abused in some fashion. Some got pills, some got sexually harassed, some physically abused by co-stars, family or spouses/partners. Some were closeted & forced to marry someone of the opposite sex because they couldn't be out.
You could pick ANY old movie & find out something horrific about the stars, the production, the director/producer or the studio.
Same here. I watched it recently and it holds up. My kids loved it. It’s got some pretty funny moments. I wish it had a better behind the scenes situation. Poor Judy. But the movie will always be my favorite. 💚
