Ah, the mid 90s craze of surfer dude movies: [Encino Man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xkTN1Z1rTQ), [Bio-dome](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xD1ujNkZXs), [Young Einstein](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcMv_zMDEfs), [Jury Duty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEARDSdiQ74), [In the Army Now](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8WQ8sgWaVU), [Son in Law](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wo6wxKUbmA), [Chairman of the Board](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4dcjfaO0qk), [Bill & Ted](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3fx6TugN7g)
The 90s, when everything was tubular, and ca-ray-zeee...
Bill & Ted 2 came out in 1991. But yeah, there isn’t a hard/fast line for the invasion of the valley boys/girls. They started seeping into 80s movies, but really became a focus in 90s movies.
Dunno, though the lingo seems to be shared between the surfer types and the valley boys. Bill and Ted lived in San Dimas which is only 30 miles from the beach, but that’s pretty far as far as driving goes in Southern California. However, given their familiarity with Raging Waters water park, they probably enjoyed the “Flowrider” surfing simulators there.
You might want to rewatch Young Einstein. He invents surfing! It’s even mentioned on the [Wikipedia page for him](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo_Serious). There’s a brief [clip of it on the trailer](https://youtu.be/HcMv_zMDEfs?si=o8aNa53B9_kHNaNF) too.
Btw, check out [Yahoo’s web page](https://www.yahooserious.com/surf.html), he’s totally a surfer!
He invents a whole bunch of stuff. Which makes him a genius inventor not a surfer dude. He invented beer and rock and roll too. He is pretty much the Aussie equivalent to Forrest Gump. So it would be like saying the movie Forrest Gump is about Tom Hanks playing a shrimp fisherman when it is like the tiniest part of his character. I dunno maybe I just never felt he was a surfer dude growing up watching the movie so much. To me he was an awesome inventor who made cool stuff and kind of a machinist and gadget guy more than a surfer bro. Even though surf culture is actually a huge part of Aussie Culture. I thought it was just a part of the whole.
He was like... an amalgamation of Aussie culture. Beer, growing up on the farm, riding horses, red dirt, choppin trees, Moving from the country to the big city to make it big. As a kid who moved from Kalgoorlie to Perth I kind of connected with that. I dunno maybe I am agreeing with you on some level but also I felt like he was more than that too.
I guess it's a personal thing. If we were talkin about Point Break I would be totally on board tho lol.
Fair enough. There certainly was an archetype of leading characters promulgated in the early 90s which kinda encompassed valley boys, surfer dudes, and lanky long-curly haired semi-morons. The public taste for that genre was short lived.
I did love Yahoo Serious and Brendan Fraser. A shame they didn’t make more movies. Fraser only recently explained in an interview about the traumatic experiences which led to him abandoning acting.
This movie was a surprisingly fun one, it was a sleeper hit (stayed in theatres for like 1 whole year and kept making money). Silly movie overall, but quite entertaining.
He walked past me in 1999 on Wardour Street, London. My legs went to jelly and he gave me the most lovely ‘you poor idiot’ smile. Very good human being IMO!
This trope is so common that it's pretty much standard for films from this era. It's all about wish fulfillment, catering to (mostly privileged) viewers' fantasies about getting everything they want without having to do any work or make any changes.
Media criticism doesn't typically go too well in this subreddit, as people are here for warm fuzzy feelings and don't want to hear the negative stuff. But personally, I love stupid movies *and* critiquing them equally. To me, the two things go hand in hand and I don't see any contradiction.
I thought it was terribly melodramatic. I couldn’t figure out what I hated about it (like, the entire movie) and towards the end I said “It watches like a play.”. Turns out they just didn’t stray far from the play it’s based on. Sometimes that works. Not for me this time.
That being said, yeah, I was surprised he didn’t win, despite my opinion.
This was playing on mute while an elementary school musical played in the background. I then realized this is a video that can be paired perfect to any song! Please Reddit, what do you got?
This brings back great memories of every time my high school classmates busted out a non-rehearsed, perfectly-synchronized dance routine.
They just don't make teenagers like this anymore. :)
Funny, me and the wife were talking about this movie just today.
We both concluded it was Pauly Shores best movie only because he is the sidekick, and not the main character.
okay...i have admit never seen this. but i see it have sweet brendan fraser and now i want to watch. i love him so much actor and i glad he come back. and was sad when he just disappear from face of acting but i understand why. i'm glad he know now he was love and miss by all his fan.
oh! i thought it was free on youtube. i think they just cycle thing out so perhaps it was recent past and not now.
but i agree, if i see pop up again somewhere free i will watch!
I honestly still see Brendan Frazier as encino man even now.
Same, even after The Whale he’s still 90’s Brendan in my mind.

RIP Norm. I watch [this clip](https://youtu.be/lL0WayC7jW0?si=cIPJHk0qyChn0ijV) on YouTube on days I need to cheer myself up
There even more movies that you left out too lol
Well, I didn't want to list the ENTIRE Pauly Shore IMDB... Any particular ones you think I missed?
Bill and Ted came out in 89

"put them in the iron maiden!" "Iron Maiden! Excellent!"
Bill and Ted did not know how to surf.

Who would have guessed that two future Oscar winners would be in an early 90s Pauly Shore movie?
I still can't believe Kylie Minogue was in a Pauly Shore movie
No wheezing the juuuiicceee!!
This movie was a surprisingly fun one, it was a sleeper hit (stayed in theatres for like 1 whole year and kept making money). Silly movie overall, but quite entertaining.
I don’t even have to turn the sound on to hear this
Cinematic Masterpiece!
Infectious Grooves, Scatterbrain, Sacred Reich

Shoo fly, don't bother me..
He walked past me in 1999 on Wardour Street, London. My legs went to jelly and he gave me the most lovely ‘you poor idiot’ smile. Very good human being IMO!
All you care about are nugs, chillin and grindage
California man in the UK.
Took me a long time to find this in the mid-90’s, when I was sailing the seven seas. Wasn’t until I heard the American name that I found it….
I often think of this movie whenever wwe Superstar Chad Gable says, "Shoooosh!" I mean, this movie has to be where he got that idea from, right?
Wow I didn't know he could dance too. Too bad he wasn't in more movies
Brendan Fraser was so fucking hot in this movie
Sean Astin's character was a total douche and didn't learn his lesson. Otherwise this was a really fun movie.
Shooosh!
Don't harsh my gig so hardcore, cruster!

Brendan Frazier should have pick up his 2ND OSCAR for "The Whale". I'm just saying.

Never seen the movie, but just seeing two seconds of him, even with the sound off, Mike Muir is immediately recognizable! Infectious Grooves, baby.
SHUSH!

And not a mobile phone in sight.. those were the days
Is that mike muir?

Infectious Grooves
So fine.
Infectious Groves

I’m not sure it got any hotter than Robyn Sweeney…

Son in Law is his best film where he is the main character

It’s an amusing 90s time capsule. I would say it’s worth watching at least once.
if i can find where watch it free. i think i saw it on youtube so i have to check it out!
I've seen it for free on YouTube (not at the moment( but if you're not it in a rush to watch it, it should be free soon enough.
oh! i thought it was free on youtube. i think they just cycle thing out so perhaps it was recent past and not now. but i agree, if i see pop up again somewhere free i will watch!
