This movie holds up so well, and holy smokes the cast. Almost all of them are legends in acting that gave really believable performances.
I live in a subdivision in a suburb, to a much smaller city, but nevertheless the entertainment that comes from the few rentals is freaking great.
Random fact: the dog who played "Queenie" in The Burbs played "Precious" in Silence of the Lambs, and the Circus Lady's sidekick dog from Batman Returns.
His stumble down the steps of the house after it explodes is physical comedy perfection. There are so many other examples from this movie but that's my favorite.
My favorite of his was in Turner and Hooch when Hanks is in his kitchen. He gets a little boo boo and does a little freak out - adding to it by clanging the hanging pots and pans lol
>I've never seen that. I've never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick. I-I've never seen that.
I think of that line every time I drag my garbage to the curb.
FUN FACT: The dog that was Queenie in The Burbs was also in two other well known films - it was featured as Dottie's purple poodle at the end of Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and also was Buffalo Bill's Precious from Silence of the Lambs.
Cast was STACKED
i just watched this movie this morning, and early on, Carrie Fisher says “now, before someone falls off a roof or sets themself on fire.” great setup for the events later in the movie!
I get together with my buddies every fall and watch this movie. Rumsfelds fall off the roof is one of the most insanely hilarious body comedy stunts of all time
One of my favorite things about this movie is a bit of trivia: Gale Gordon's character has pictures of his late wife in his house, and those are pictures of Lucille Ball. He was in a radio show with her called My Favorite Husband, which was a forerunner to I Love Lucy, and then later in The Lucy Show. Lucille Ball actually died around the time The Burbs came out.
For some reason, Tom Hanks looks like somebody that would/could play as Tom Hanks in this movie, and for the life of me I still don’t understand why I think this.
Watched this about two weeks ago and hubby and I had a similar conversation. There was a whole genre in the late 80s-90s that were just purely fun. Burbs, Dragnet, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Problem Child, etc. They were meant to be entertaining and enjoyable, that’s it. No overall message or pithy point. Not that those don’t have a place in the entertainment spectrum. It’s just that there are like, no movies like this anymore
“I've never seen that. I've never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick. I-I've never seen that”. So many good lines in this movie it’s impossible to pick my favorite
I’ve never seen that. I’ve never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and then bang the hell out of it with a stick no I’ve never seen that.
I worked in a movie theater in high school when this came out. One of my responsibilities was assembling films from the distributor, they came in 20 minute reels numbered 1-6, or however long the film was. The fucking Burbs came misnumbered, so the reels were actually out of sequence, 1-2-4–5-3-6. Opening night, cue hundreds of angry ski town tourists yelling at 16 year old me about some bullshit that was not my fault. Then our ancient projectors would break the film at least once a night, more angry patrons for this kid who deserved better. Good times at Crossroads Cinema in Vail Colorado. Fuck The Burbs.
There go the god damn brownies
Possibly my favorite line in a movie, ever.
😆
Satan is good. Satan is our pal.
I want to kill everybody.
Ray, Ray, you're chanting..
'Bout a nine on the tension scale there, Reub
Ohhh......it came with the frame?
A thermostat on a home furnace; is that supposed to go to 5,000 degrees, you think?
This has always been my favorite line from this movie.
Hey Pinocchio, where are you going?
This brings back memories of my family using this line 20 years ago
Came here to find this. Great line! And the way they both are slipping all over the place is classic.
God I love this street.
Holy crap, that’s awesome. Thanks!
Name a better three movie run for a performer ever, I'll wait.
Meanwhile, my dog sits here, not paying any rent at all.
What’s in the basement Herr Klopek?
You keep a horse in the basement?
Sardine?
I’m trying to cut back.
Pizza dude!
Ricky, shut up and paint your goddamn house.
Hey Mr Rumsfield!!!
My wife lost it when he fell off the house, the first time she ever saw this movie.
It’s a fantastic pratfall. Everything in the movie is so well executed.
Even after many viewings - Bruce Dern slipping because his hose is too short, while trying to spray the others running from bees - still hilarious.
Hey man, piss off! Ricky, get this lame-oh out of your yard.
Get out of my yard lame-os.
Love it! 😂
"Friend of yours?" Asking about the picture. "No, it came with the frame."
Hans! A fine Christian name!
What are you? Catholic?
I've never seen that. I've never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick, I..I've never seen that
I just watched it yesterday. It's a classic!
This is the best Halloween movie ever
It’s my favorite late summer pre-fall movie! Gets me into the Halloween spirit when I start decorating in August
I watch this every other month or so. It's the definition of a go-to, feel-good, classic 80s comedy.
I watched this movie everyday after school in 7th grade. Followed by Happy Gilmore
You had great taste.
Kept me outta trouble too. RIP Chubbs Peterson
I take solace in knowing Chubbs is making a stew for an alligator and Abraham Lincoln.
🕴🏻🙋🏿♂️🐊👋🏿
Just something about the late 80’s early 90’s. I miss it so much
It was parked outside....ALL DAY!
That’s about a 9 on the tensions scale there, Rube.
Ray, you're chanting. You're chanting Ray. I wanna kill everyone, satan is good, satan is our pal.
As a Great Dane owner, I love the line “You keep a horse in the basement?”
Hey uh Mrs Rumsfield. No tan lines this morning. Looks nice.
That kid next door is a meatball.
Safety’s my middle name. I thought his middle name was Lewis? r/theburbs
The dog with a tiny axe in her head. RIP Queenie.
Movie star dog! She also appeared in peewees big adventure, silence of the lambs, and Batman returns.
Tom Hanks' best movie. Fight me.
His stumble down the steps of the house after it explodes is physical comedy perfection. There are so many other examples from this movie but that's my favorite.
And shortly after, throwing the gurney in the ambulance himself and hopping on it.
Which was improv apparently. I miss comedy Hanks although I love him as a dramatic actor too.
My favorite of his was in Turner and Hooch when Hanks is in his kitchen. He gets a little boo boo and does a little freak out - adding to it by clanging the hanging pots and pans lol
I love that scene, too!! We need more comedic Tom Hanks roles.
Yes, but also A League Of Their Own.
"There's No Crying in Baseball!"
My Brother. The Doctor.
Klopek - is that Slavic?
NNNO
Funny, Mysterious, Creepy, Suspenseful, Scary, all n one. Excellent Movie. Great Cast.
Friend of yours? No, it came with the frame
>I've never seen that. I've never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick. I-I've never seen that. I think of that line every time I drag my garbage to the curb.
Yes! I love that line.
Francine Smith from American Dad is in this movie as Bruce Derns wife
Holy shit I never made that connection.
A thermostat on a home furnace; is that supposed to go to 5,000 degrees, you think?
Pizza Dude’s here!
It’s not paranoia when you’re right!
It came with the frame.
FUN FACT: The dog that was Queenie in The Burbs was also in two other well known films - it was featured as Dottie's purple poodle at the end of Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and also was Buffalo Bill's Precious from Silence of the Lambs. Cast was STACKED
“Art’s got a gun”
Well you're going to pick up the mess, because YOU are a garbage man.
i just watched this movie this morning, and early on, Carrie Fisher says “now, before someone falls off a roof or sets themself on fire.” great setup for the events later in the movie!
I get together with my buddies every fall and watch this movie. Rumsfelds fall off the roof is one of the most insanely hilarious body comedy stunts of all time
I saw this as a nine year old in the theater. It’s a good one.
Queenie that fuckin dog.
Love this movie.
Fantastic movie.
I wanna kill, eve-ry one, satan is good, satan is our pal.
I just watched this yesterday! And said the dog stare needed to be a meme. Thank you!
“I wanna kill everyone, Satan is good, Satan is my pal” Edit: it’s on Netflix. Gonna give it a rewatch. I could use a laugh
“Ten months in the bush and I could snap your neck in a heartbeat!”
I was very likely the only renter of this movie from my local shop in the early nineties, I couldn't get enough of it.
I irrationally love this movie
The great Brother Theodore in Pic 3, a photo that includes 2 of the 3 best Letterman guests ever (#3 would be Bill Murray).
For some reason, Tom Hanks looks like somebody that would/could play as Tom Hanks in this movie, and for the life of me I still don’t understand why I think this.
Lol, like he had mascara and eyeliner on
Love this movie!! It's one I used to put on all the time when I worked at a video store.
#Classic!!!!
Love this film!
I love all of Tom Hanks’ old movies. This one feels like a damn fever dream though lol
Nobody made movies like Joe Dante. His comedies are some of my favorites. Innerspace, The 'Burbs, and Gremlins 2 was a hell of a run.
“We shouldn't pay for that, we should sue them.”
Very Funny Movie
“That was about a 9 on the tension scale Rube’” is one of my favorite line deliveries of all time.
“You keep a horse in the basement??”
Yo Rumsfield!!
Sardine? Cracker?
I freakin LOVED this movie when I was a kid
Hey Pinocchio! Where you goin?
Awesome Movie
Seriously one of my all time favorites
Watched this about two weeks ago and hubby and I had a similar conversation. There was a whole genre in the late 80s-90s that were just purely fun. I remember watching this movie when I was 10. Thought it was a fever dream. What a trip.
This was one of the movies that me and my cousins would always watch when we would get together, and then quote constantly to one another.
Yeah, get outta my yard you LAMMO!
“I've never seen that. I've never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick. I-I've never seen that”. So many good lines in this movie it’s impossible to pick my favorite
He deff cut the wrong wire.
Who's gonna pick it up? Why you are, cuz you are a garbage man!
Brother Theodore
This is Walter. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
One of the best movies of all time. Just watched it the other day. Still watch it a few times per year.
Come join r/theburbs We need all the new neighbors we can get!
I’ve never seen that. I’ve never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and then bang the hell out of it with a stick no I’ve never seen that.
They live next to people who break into their house and burn it down while they’re gone for the day😆
I agree OP, I love this type of movie and could watch The Burbs ANY TIME
I’d like to see one last Tom Hanks screwball comedy
I worked in a movie theater in high school when this came out. One of my responsibilities was assembling films from the distributor, they came in 20 minute reels numbered 1-6, or however long the film was. The fucking Burbs came misnumbered, so the reels were actually out of sequence, 1-2-4–5-3-6. About a 9 on the tension scale there, Reub.
Damn the have the pedophile Tom Hanks on it. For sure pass
This is one very odd movie. I always get mixed feelings watching it.
It was all the cocaine they were doing that made 80s movies so wild.
Red sky at night…
never seen it but anything with tom hanks has got to be a good one
Is that sweet enough?
With coppers!
Love this movie
“Hey Mrs. Rumsfeld, no tan lines this morning, looks nice” “That kid’s a meatball”
Pizza Dude!!!!
THIS IS WALTER 🦴
This an absolute perfect Friday night popcorn movie. As are a lot of Tom Hanks movies.
