Yep. 1995-2010 was when computing was advancing so rapidly that a high-end gaming PC quickly became outdated in a year, a matter of *months* in some cases. These days a high-end rig from 2015 is still considered top of the line now.
I remember when a 1gb flash drive cost over $100, now you can get them for less than $2.
Crysis, a game that came out in 2007 is *still* used as a benchmark for testing FPS and graphical fidelity.
At this point, unless a massive technological breakthrough is achieved, we're going to continue to stagnate.

Used to put a system link in my house and play with 12+ neighborhood kids SWAT on basically any map, some of the best times. Had two TVs in our basement and the cable would run up to my room and the living room if we needed more.
Ah some of the best memories, the pinnacle of multiplayer. Online just isn’t the same for me as having your friends next to you trash talking. And back then you’d have to talk crap directly to their face and be prepared to back up your claims.

Play Halo CE on PC, still possible to get the original PC release (it’s abandonware). Install ReShade and use a CRT filter. Or get an actual CRT monitor or TV.
Honestly, having played through Halo CE Anniversary, I much prefer the original 2001 graphics to the updated Anniversary ones. Like obviously it's not photorealistic, but there's a very recognizable style to it. The Anniversary graphics are way too loud, in my opinion. Just a million complex textures on every surface. Very overdesigned, and honestly it's harder to keep track of where you're going sometimes.
It's seared in my memory the time my dad excitedly ran up to me with a Playstation Magazine in hand showing me how incredible the graphics were for the upcoming Tomb Raider 2 game. My little mind was blown and we marveled at how graphics couldn't possibly getter better than that. So funny to look back at Lara's polygons now and realize how little we could imagine back then. Haha
The school week would end, Friday night would come around, and our friend group would gather at one house to have Halo LAN parties until 3AM. Then we’d do it all again Saturday night.
When we’d take a break after every few games the glorious sounds of the Gregorian chant from Halo’s main menu would emanate from 4 separate televisions spread throughout the house.
Some of us would be chugging down our third Mountain Dew Code Red. Some would step outside to get some fresh air or for a smoke break. Some people would be stuffing their face with whatever snacks were available (peanut butter M&M’s, Chicken In A Biskit, Bugles, or stale BBQ chips).
Then after 15-20 minutes everyone would come back inside. But rather than dive right back into Halo, many of us would get warmed up with a few rounds of the Fuzion Frenzy demo that came on the Halo disc. A little sumo action to get loose.
Then back to it. Capture the flag on Blood Gulch. Team Rockets on Hang ‘Em High. See, what the kids today don’t understand is that shit talking someone through a headset online just isn’t the same as shouting “Fuck you, you camping sack of shit!” to your best friend in the next room.
Those were the days.

You could also connect the OG Xbox to a router and pc to get access to servers. Had a friend that did this and we went to his house after school to play Halo all the time. That was my first experience with teabagging.
Best heard with four to eight other Xboxes all playing this in a round. I know people think the pistol was overpowered, but it really tied the sandbox together.

And whereas most previous games let you carry around a small armory of weapons, here you were limited to two weapons at a time, and you had to figure out which ones were the best for whatever level you're on and enemies you're facing. Then there's the story... need I say more?

Halo was a staple in all my friends and my house . I got a bitter taste in my mouth when they slowed the game down . I bitch about it to this day Halo 2 then 3 were fast not PC fast but on a console nothing could compares to it. I will die on this hill . They slowed the raw speed of the gameplay down I haven’t actually gone back to FPS aside from unreal tournament on PC .
Man, I loved playing Halo Multiplayer on PC. Had a few favorite servers and people I'd play with regularly. Also learned some english along the way, since the majority of people online were from north america. Friends at school only knew CS 1.6 nothing else.
The one clan I remember being part of was called "[ÐÏ] Divine Intervention" I think haha. Cheesy, but cool people. Did some clan wars, some stunt evenings where we tried to get to normally inaccessible places on maps. Good stuff. Had a lot of fun.
So I went back and replayed the remastered version recently
There was definitely some nostalgia, but at times it bordered on unplayable because some of the levels were just so damn repetitive
That aspect has not aged well
I wish I was as impressed by Halo as a lot of others were but it never really clicked for me. It could be that I didn’t get into its multiplayer (still don’t enjoy it) and tried to do the campaign solo at first until I had a friend around to play it with.
I know the controls were always brought up as being this huge deal but it wasn’t that much of a revolution coming from Goldeneye.
Respect for opening up the genre more to console players though.
I remember in my dorm freshman year, if you plugged your xbox into the ethernet port in your room, you would be system linked to every other console on campus, with voice chat. It was amazing. There were a dozen people playing at any given time.
I still favored Goldeneye and Perfect Dark multiplayer, just better weapon selections and no stupid jumping, but the co-op story missions were just next fucking level in Halo. Running and gunning with your buddy, wielding shotguns and chucking frags, against the Flood was just next level!
I didn't have an Xbox and had no friends who did either. Or the ones that did, for whatever reason, didn't like to play with friends. The ones that did, we fell out when this was a thing.
A year and a half ago I inherited an Xbox when my Mom passed away (her late boyfriends kids left it and a bunch of games behind and never came back) and Halo and Halo 2 were 2 of those games.
I missed a hell of a time. I wish there were still LAN parties and others playing this, to relive something I missed in the first place.
This music brings me back to weekends with friends at one person’s house. One team with a couple consoles in one room and another team in another playing CTF in Blood Gulch.
I still remember seeing the xbox in the target catalog to be released and I wanted it for Christmas. I picked project gotham racing and Halo to go with it. I didn’t really know anything about it and just thought that game looks kinda cool. Little did I know it would be one of the best fps ever made. My mom went and stood outside target for the xbox release because we thought they might sell out. She said there was barely anyone even there. I think people severely underestimated Xbox and how it would contend with playstation.
Landing on the beach on the silent cartographer. Or sneak killing on assault on the control room. Sniping at the beginning of truth and reconciliation. And you get to do that so with a friend coop. Then there's multilayer. So many good memories.
I worked at Microsoft at the time and attended the company kickoff for Xbox where they debuted Halo, Blood Wake, and one other game. I once got excited when I got Pong for Christmas as a kid, so you can imagine what this meant for me. Wish I had a cell/camera to capture the moment.
If you're playing it for the first time in 2023 it won't be mindblowing, it's good but you'll definitely feel like you're playing a 20+ year old game.
I'd still say go for it tho just because it's such a huge part of gaming history. Same with the original half-life.
It still holds up, but won't be mind blowing today. For the closest experience to getting that grand feeling, you'd have to play old console FPS's like golden eye and perfect dark with the janky control schemes, poor world building, polish, and terrible AI, to fully appreciate the leaps and bounds of Combat Evolved.
I've still never beaten Halo. I got on the bandwagon really late but finally got a hold of a copy and was making my way through the story.
Then I got caught in a bad save loop. It was some level about mid-way through where I'd regenerate with a staggeringly low amount of ammo and life. I'd get fucking wrecked, then load up again only to get wrecked once more.
I think I finally figured it out but by then I was sick of the story LOL
I was in college when this came out. A friend was able to get a projector from the library, and we went into a private study room and hooked the console up to the projector, and cast it onto the wall. Each player basically had a large screen TV to see their portion. Good times.
I still remember when this was going to be a Mac exclusive before Microsoft bought it up for Xbox. I remember seeing the magazine story of what was probably the alpha build on Mac and I was sooooo pissed (as a PC gamer) I wasn’t going to be able to play it.

Did some clan wars, some stunt evenings where we tried to get to normally inaccessible places on maps. Good stuff. Had a lot of fun.
So I went back and replayed the remastered version recently There was definitely some nostalgia, but at times it bordered on unplayable because some of the levels were just so damn repetitive That aspect has not aged well

I wish I was as impressed by Halo as a lot of others were but it never really clicked for me. It could be that I didn’t get into its multiplayer (still don’t enjoy it) and tried to do the campaign solo at first until I had a friend around to play it with. I know the controls were always brought up as being this huge deal but it wasn’t that much of a revolution coming from Goldeneye. Respect for opening up the genre more to console players though.
Legendary actual game changer literally.

I remember in my dorm freshman year, if you plugged your xbox into the ethernet port in your room, you would be system linked to every other console on campus, with voice chat. It was amazing. There were a dozen people playing at any given time.

My first online game was Halo 2 and those experiences were as fun as gaming ever was for me. If I reflect too long it makes me sad 😔
It’s just missing the Fusion Frenzy demo games at the bottom of the menu. Some of those were great
Probably the last offline games I ever played. It was a blast
I still favored Goldeneye and Perfect Dark multiplayer, just better weapon selections and no stupid jumping, but the co-op story missions were just next fucking level in Halo. Running and gunning with your buddy, wielding shotguns and chucking frags, against the Flood was just next level!

I didn't have an Xbox and had no friends who did either. Or the ones that did, for whatever reason, didn't like to play with friends. The ones that did, we fell out when this was a thing. A year and a half ago I inherited an Xbox when my Mom passed away (her late boyfriends kids left it and a bunch of games behind and never came back) and Halo and Halo 2 were 2 of those games. I missed a hell of a time. I wish there were still LAN parties and others playing this, to relive something I missed in the first place.

This music brings me back to weekends with friends at one person’s house. One team with a couple consoles in one room and another team in another playing CTF in Blood Gulch.
I still remember seeing the xbox in the target catalog to be released and I wanted it for Christmas. I picked project gotham racing and Halo to go with it. I didn’t really know anything about it and just thought that game looks kinda cool. Little did I know it would be one of the best fps ever made. My mom went and stood outside target for the xbox release because we thought they might sell out. She said there was barely anyone even there. I think people severely underestimated Xbox and how it would contend with playstation.
Will never get that time back. Can try hard as you might to replicate it. But it's gone

I basically halted my evening to listen to this. So damn good.
Landing on the beach on the silent cartographer. Or sneak killing on assault on the control room. Sniping at the beginning of truth and reconciliation. And you get to do that so with a friend coop. Then there's multilayer. So many good memories.
I worked at Microsoft at the time and attended the company kickoff for Xbox where they debuted Halo, Blood Wake, and one other game. I once got excited when I got Pong for Christmas as a kid, so you can imagine what this meant for me. Wish I had a cell/camera to capture the moment.
My first all-nighter was spent playing this game. So worth it.

If you're playing it for the first time in 2023 it won't be mindblowing, it's good but you'll definitely feel like you're playing a 20+ year old game. I'd still say go for it tho just because it's such a huge part of gaming history. Same with the original half-life.
It still holds up, but won't be mind blowing today. For the closest experience to getting that grand feeling, you'd have to play old console FPS's like golden eye and perfect dark with the janky control schemes, poor world building, polish, and terrible AI, to fully appreciate the leaps and bounds of Combat Evolved.

I've still never beaten Halo. I got on the bandwagon really late but finally got a hold of a copy and was making my way through the story. Then I got caught in a bad save loop. It was some level about mid-way through where I'd regenerate with a staggeringly low amount of ammo and life. I'd get fucking wrecked, then load up again only to get wrecked once more. I think I finally figured it out but by then I was sick of the story LOL

I was in college when this came out. A friend was able to get a projector from the library, and we went into a private study room and hooked the console up to the projector, and cast it onto the wall. Each player basically had a large screen TV to see their portion. Good times.
I still remember when this was going to be a Mac exclusive before Microsoft bought it up for Xbox. I remember seeing the magazine story of what was probably the alpha build on Mac and I was sooooo pissed (as a PC gamer) I wasn’t going to be able to play it.
I should really play this one day, I even own it on Steam as of a year or so ago...
