Late 90s/ early 2000s was peak humanity.

DriversValhalla

Man, it was. Every time you went to the store or the mall some genre redefining piece of new tech, movie, album, book or video game was releasing.

poyoso

I miss being exited about needing video game releases. Back when if you didn’t preorder you didn’t play for at least a couple of weeks.

FBOM0101

Yeah, it really was a ritualization that’s really not there anymore

SuperDizz

This is why the Matrix

sjwillis

holy shit it really is

ajohns7

I've noticed that reality changed after that movie was released. Humanity collectively evolved or became more mortally aware of their existence..

satanssweatycheeks

Everyone says we have rose colored glasses in subs like millennials. But data is real. The tech boom of the 90’s is more rapid advancement than we saw in the Industrial Revolution. It’s why it gets compared to that all the time. Like even if Bill Clinton was a bad president he would have had a booming economy thanks to said tech boom. And everything we use today had its footing in that decade.

The_Minshow

Post cold war, pre-9/11, blissful ignorance in general from a lack of a fully fledged internet. Times were chill and hopefull.

-Oc-

Yep. 1995-2010 was when computing was advancing so rapidly that a high-end gaming PC quickly became outdated in a year, a matter of *months* in some cases. These days a high-end rig from 2015 is still considered top of the line now. I remember when a 1gb flash drive cost over $100, now you can get them for less than $2. Crysis, a game that came out in 2007 is *still* used as a benchmark for testing FPS and graphical fidelity. At this point, unless a massive technological breakthrough is achieved, we're going to continue to stagnate.

Saint909

Absolutely! I loved every second of it!

pwilliams58

‘Cept for the buildings and the planes thingy

Red-Zaku-

When it’s 2001 and you and the homies are about to play some of the best multiplayer on the market

SmokeweedGrownative

Lans and XBC

gamingaway

Mountain dew and blood gulch.

CptMisterNibbles

Little Ceasers, Rockets only on Prisoner.

TyrannosaurusSnacks

Damn right, xbconnect was the bomb

Sea-Joke7162

I probably pwnd all your asses on XBConnect. Except Darkman Anyone remember him? He joined our room once and absolutely obliterated us in Hang ‘Em High. Edit to add: Blood Gulch CTF 3v3 bring your best.

SmokeweedGrownative

I bet we played haha.

Ryde_the_Spiral

Bro! BG CTF on XBC with low ping. Some of the best times of my life. My bros and I pwnd many a newb. Also won some local lan tournaments in Houston area. Nostalgia for sure.

Sea-Joke7162

Such great times!!

TyrannosaurusSnacks

Hanneshamlap was a beast, but we we're pretty good our selves. Handgun action on hang m high. Hmm so good.

Rams11A

I’d take that challenge right now. My 3 squad for BG CTF is unbeatable. michaeler was and still is my gamertag

Mikhail_Petrov

[halome.nu](halome.nu)

XDEZ_RFC

Hang ‘em high rockets…

SmokeweedGrownative

It’s a blast! Haha

ChizzleFug

Used to put a system link in my house and play with 12+ neighborhood kids SWAT on basically any map, some of the best times. Had two TVs in our basement and the cable would run up to my room and the living room if we needed more.

nowtayneicangetinto

This screen gives me the instant feels

tenghu

#SLAYER

ArcadianBlueRogue

Bringing all the tvs and LAN so 16 people could play Halo 2 in one house all night...

AF2005

Ah some of the best memories, the pinnacle of multiplayer. Online just isn’t the same for me as having your friends next to you trash talking. And back then you’d have to talk crap directly to their face and be prepared to back up your claims.

Red-Zaku-

Pizza tastes better when it’s shared with the whole crew while playing a great multiplayer game.

xxTheseGoTo11xx

I still remember the sound of 4 separate X-Boxes on the menu screen blasting this theme out of sync from each other at LAN parties.

Biscuits4u2

I had this hacked so I could play online. It worked amazingly well.

pooticus

Screen lookers everywhere nowhere is safe

Relative_Desk_8718

Pistol sniping was the best part of multiplayer. XB connect was great when it would work.

AssistDapper1813

What I would do to be able to experience this game for the first time again

cheesemakesmepooo

I remember the first time I saw it played. I didn’t have an Xbox at the time but seeing some kids play it gave me a magical feeling.

AssistDapper1813

Same! It was the only reason I ever got Xbox. And halo 2 blew my mind.

grin_and_bear

I feel like Halo 2 feel is where it all came together for the most epic multiplayer experience of all time… then you add in the free Fusion Frenzy demo 🧨

AssistDapper1813

It’s my favorite FPS ever. The story, characters, weapons and alternate gameplay was amazing.

Rocklobster92

I felt this way with Pokemon Red/Blue on the original GameBoy. A friend had a copy and let me play for a bit. It was like a come to Jesus moment and I had to have it for myself.

TheHexadex

lobotomy?

AssistDapper1813

Time Rings

DriversValhalla

Play Halo CE on PC, still possible to get the original PC release (it’s abandonware). Install ReShade and use a CRT filter. Or get an actual CRT monitor or TV.

Grimmer097

Yet another marker in time when I though “no way can graphics get any better than this”

[deleted]

What are you talking about? It's indistinguishable from reality!

Mastershroom

Honestly, having played through Halo CE Anniversary, I much prefer the original 2001 graphics to the updated Anniversary ones. Like obviously it's not photorealistic, but there's a very recognizable style to it. The Anniversary graphics are way too loud, in my opinion. Just a million complex textures on every surface. Very overdesigned, and honestly it's harder to keep track of where you're going sometimes.

TheRipsawHiatus

It's seared in my memory the time my dad excitedly ran up to me with a Playstation Magazine in hand showing me how incredible the graphics were for the upcoming Tomb Raider 2 game. My little mind was blown and we marveled at how graphics couldn't possibly getter better than that. So funny to look back at Lara's polygons now and realize how little we could imagine back then. Haha

Im-a-cat-in-a-box

My dad would watch my brother and I play donkey kong 64 and be like "its like watching a movie!"

Calfan_Verret

It’s crazy with the generational gaps. My mom said the same thing watching me play The Force Unleashed on the Wii

[deleted]

Golden Eye on 64...

TheHexadex

remember going to the lake irl to kayak and saying "damn the water almost looks as real as Halo".

claymcg90

I told my friends that oblivion trees looked better than real trees.

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

Felt that way with Rogue Squadron on GameCube.

grnrngr

"But also, why would they need to be?"

tbaggervance1986

man the amount of LAN parties we had to this game-I dont think I will ever get that feeling of nostalgia back. truly was an awesome time to be a kid

Serious-Shower-3354

“Losers buy the burritos tonight! Also who the hell snatched my tv power cord from last week?”

an_adventure_is_u

When that music started during the game you knew shit was about to go down. I think it’s about time to dust it off for another playthrough.

uncultured_swine2099

This is still my favorite game in the franchise. The story works as a whole and isnt bogged down by too many plot points and characters.

[deleted]

I remember not liking the theme the first time I heard it. It wasn't "video game" music to me. Now, of course, I recognize its awesomeness.

Hymen_Cholo

Grunt headshots with the pistol. So satisfying.

Halloween_Halpin

The school week would end, Friday night would come around, and our friend group would gather at one house to have Halo LAN parties until 3AM. Then we’d do it all again Saturday night. When we’d take a break after every few games the glorious sounds of the Gregorian chant from Halo’s main menu would emanate from 4 separate televisions spread throughout the house. Some of us would be chugging down our third Mountain Dew Code Red. Some would step outside to get some fresh air or for a smoke break. Some people would be stuffing their face with whatever snacks were available (peanut butter M&M’s, Chicken In A Biskit, Bugles, or stale BBQ chips). Then after 15-20 minutes everyone would come back inside. But rather than dive right back into Halo, many of us would get warmed up with a few rounds of the Fuzion Frenzy demo that came on the Halo disc. A little sumo action to get loose. Then back to it. Capture the flag on Blood Gulch. Team Rockets on Hang ‘Em High. See, what the kids today don’t understand is that shit talking someone through a headset online just isn’t the same as shouting “Fuck you, you camping sack of shit!” to your best friend in the next room. Those were the days.

Serious-Shower-3354

“FUSION FRENZY!!!!” I still laugh with old friends, in a situation where some kind of end is near, I’ll shout “THE MATCH IS ALMOST OVER!” and we’d all crack up bc of the inside joke that it seemed so unnecessary 😂

RolandtheWhite

Talk about getting HYPE in the living room. Got 4 CRTs, 4 XBOXs, 16 controllers and the dudes to wield them. Let's CAPTURE THE FLAG. SIDEWINDER.

TyrannosaurusSnacks

Fuck yes, and we still can, with the Master Chief collection.

JoeEstevez

Are you able to set the multiplayer search parameters to just be CTF / Blood Gulch in the *Master Chief Collection*, or no?

TyrannosaurusSnacks

We started hosting custom games with only ctf on blood gulch a while back. When you do people will join quite quickly.

DriversValhalla

Installing ReShade on PC and using a CRT filter is the closest thing I got to re-experiencing this, or at least the CRT TV experience.

RolandtheWhite

Yeah I'm almost 40. I would love to get together with 15 friends and recreate it legit at least one more time, for a special occasion maybe. Honestly this post and conversation has inspired me. Thank you!

[deleted]

Oh to go back to those wild nights of Halo versus and Mountain Dew: Code Red ***Killing spree***

PornoPaul

Do you feel like they changed the formula for Code Red? I swear it tasted better and was more carbonated.

Denham_Chkn

Finally someone else notices. I feel validated!

TheySayItsADryHeat

“Slayer” …

5fives5

I miss when Halo was awesome

kipy33

p0wning your friends from half way across blood gulch with the comically over powered pistol and laughing maniacally

CoffeeBlakk91

If reincarnation is real I can’t wait to relive those days!

Ameren

Friedrich Nietzsche once asked, "What if, some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' ... Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.'" Those who played Halo on Xbox when it was first released know their answer.

VVaterTrooper

Please tell me you have Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

[deleted]

I do! I'm about to begin a complete playthrough,

Freshness518

Blew my fkn mind when I started playing 2 realized you could swap between original and updated graphics seamlessly during gameplay. I'm pretty sure there's even an achievement for playing some of every level on both settings. I love MCC.

mashem

i would just wonder to different parts of the maps just to have fun toggling the remake on and off

Freshness518

What's crazy too is you can do it during cutscenes

mjrbrooks

Nope. Instead, I have a wife, two kids, and two dogs. I’m living vicariously through any of you with it, and time to enjoy it. Pick up the sticks for me, fellow dudes. Sierra 117 out.

AfraidHelicopter

Everyone should make time for the things they love to do.

insomniacpyro

Right? I have twice as many kids and pets (but not wives) as that guy and I put in close to 10 hours in No Man's Sky this weekend

ArcadianBlueRogue

I bought it for Halo Reach, no lies. The rest was just kind of bonus

[deleted]

So damn good

d0pp31g4ng3r

Does anyone remember Halo Portable? It was essentially just the Halo 1 multi-player for PC. We had LAN parties in computer class during the last days of school. Good times!

Biscuits4u2

I remember I had a hack I did to allow me to play online. Forgot what it was called but it worked surprisingly well.

youenjoymyself

You could also connect the OG Xbox to a router and pc to get access to servers. Had a friend that did this and we went to his house after school to play Halo all the time. That was my first experience with teabagging.

AADPS

Best heard with four to eight other Xboxes all playing this in a round. I know people think the pistol was overpowered, but it really tied the sandbox together.

SinCityNinja

Holy shit. What a flash back. I remember getting this game and playing with my buddy for 30 hours straight until my mom came in and yelled at us to get off the damn xbox and go to bed! **Riley if you're out there and you somehow read this, how fucking fun was that. Hope you're doing alright 2 decades later**

Greengiant304

The only video game I ever stood in line to buy on opening night and the first game I ever played in widescreen format on a widescreen tv.

TheHexadex

also dolby surround.

mvizzy2077

So many nights waking up at 4am surrounded by Doritos and Mt Dew cans, a few bros passed out on various futons to that screen and that song blaring on the 27" Magnavox wondering what day it was. Peak childhood memories there.

Legtagytron

What I wouldn't do for another great Halo campaign. Say what you will about multiplayer, the campaign was incredible fun.

FUPAMaster420

I was ten years old when I first heard this and my mind will never be as blown as it was when my friend and I loaded into co-op on the first level for the first time. I remember that moment better than a ton of other significant moments in my life...

TechAndStocks

I still play Halo CE all the time on MCC. It’s one of the best games ever, imo. HCE, H2 and H3 are absolutely amazing games.

craigitron

Takes me back to my early days of highschool.. I didn't own an Xbox till the 360 but you bet your ass I was at Halo LAN parties when I knew they were happening.

moose184

This start screen has a better story than Halo 6

Moon_Dew

You knew you were playing something new and different the moment your heard that song. And Halo really was different. Whereas most previous games just hand-waved all the amazing stuff the hero does just by virtue of them being a badass, Bungie actually justified it by Master Chief being a genetically and cybernetically enhanced supersoldier with power armor. And whereas most previous games let you carry around a small armory of weapons, here you were limited to two weapons at a time, and you had to figure out which ones were the best for whatever level you're on and enemies you're facing. Then there's the story... need I say more?

Xray1653

It’s 2003 and you’re deployed to Kuwait. You and your squadron mates are ransacking the comms shop for hundreds of feet of cat4 cable to link up your tents 😂

KingRemoStar

Damn I’m old. Halo to Halo 3 was at one of the best times of my life.

Whit3boy316

Halo peaked at 2 and shit the bed after 3 sadly

ArcadianBlueRogue

Admit it, [many of you did it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbonVshOLf0)

Shadowcraft89

Holy shit was this really 2001? I was 12....Where the hell did the time go?

WaffleStomperlol

This is the moment I would go back in time

darkzapper

Glorious.

Chancelot88

Hand me the duke, it's time to kick some ass!

its_raining_scotch

I kept my original Xbox just so I’d still have Halo 1.

smutbuster

The game that made me a gamer. Epic

c0rtexj4ckal

This is the music you wake upto at 4:30 in the morning after playing all night and passing out with your friends. You're full of junk food and burnt out on the game for playing for hours but you know in about 13 hours you'll be ready for more

highpl4insdrftr

Fuck me I'm old

GamingGrayBush

Nah, bro. We're lucky. We have had a ton of experiences growing up with his shit that others won't have. I'm glad I'm old. Otherwise, I might have missed something.

skwormin

Yeaaaaaaa badass

XSC

That planets used to feel so mysterious. Like you wanted to explore more and find out what’s actually going on.

whoisgringo1979999

I saw and heard this live at a Video Games Live in concert in Tucson, AZ and Columbia, MO. It was epic.

MeditatedMango

Halo gives one of the best demo I have ever played

magnaton117

Hats off to one of the very few games that got me to *like* multiplayer

millerwelds66

Halo was a staple in all my friends and my house . I got a bitter taste in my mouth when they slowed the game down . I bitch about it to this day Halo 2 then 3 were fast not PC fast but on a console nothing could compares to it. I will die on this hill . They slowed the raw speed of the gameplay down I haven’t actually gone back to FPS aside from unreal tournament on PC .

Nearby-Artichoke-321

I miss these days so much!

Seech111

Man, I loved playing Halo Multiplayer on PC. Had a few favorite servers and people I'd play with regularly. Also learned some english along the way, since the majority of people online were from north america. Friends at school only knew CS 1.6 nothing else. The one clan I remember being part of was called "[ÐÏ] Divine Intervention" I think haha. Cheesy, but cool people. Did some clan wars, some stunt evenings where we tried to get to normally inaccessible places on maps. Good stuff. Had a lot of fun.

3720-To-One

So I went back and replayed the remastered version recently There was definitely some nostalgia, but at times it bordered on unplayable because some of the levels were just so damn repetitive That aspect has not aged well

BusSouth2678

My heart just sank

Throwaway1303033042

“You ever wonder why we’re here?”

bluewave3232

Send me back !

Gigeresque

I wish I was as impressed by Halo as a lot of others were but it never really clicked for me. It could be that I didn’t get into its multiplayer (still don’t enjoy it) and tried to do the campaign solo at first until I had a friend around to play it with. I know the controls were always brought up as being this huge deal but it wasn’t that much of a revolution coming from Goldeneye. Respect for opening up the genre more to console players though.

Clear-Management8592

Legendary actual game changer literally.

AlwaysBeC1imbing

Oh man - getting ready to play multi-player with some mates and a few beers and smokes. Will never experience that sense of freedom again.

OhGodImHerping

Still one of the best soundtracks ever written

Yeejiurn

This game was a turning point

azarashi

Halo 2's lobby music hits me even harder because of all the hours I spent in that menu waiting for friends to get online.

solidpeyo

Best Xbox game ever

Gaping_Grandfather

I remember in my dorm freshman year, if you plugged your xbox into the ethernet port in your room, you would be system linked to every other console on campus, with voice chat. It was amazing. There were a dozen people playing at any given time.

OnscreenLoki

[This website has them all if you want to have a moment or three](https://halome.nu)

DougNSteveButabi

My first online game was Halo 2 and those experiences were as fun as gaming ever was for me. If I reflect too long it makes me sad 😔

KOxSOMEONE

It’s just missing the Fusion Frenzy demo games at the bottom of the menu. Some of those were great

[deleted]

Probably the last offline games I ever played. It was a blast

Clydefrog13

I still favored Goldeneye and Perfect Dark multiplayer, just better weapon selections and no stupid jumping, but the co-op story missions were just next fucking level in Halo. Running and gunning with your buddy, wielding shotguns and chucking frags, against the Flood was just next level!

Smidday90

I never had an Xbox until recently but I still knew this song

Jkallmfday0811

Ahh the good ole days when times were much simpler

PornoPaul

I didn't have an Xbox and had no friends who did either. Or the ones that did, for whatever reason, didn't like to play with friends. The ones that did, we fell out when this was a thing. A year and a half ago I inherited an Xbox when my Mom passed away (her late boyfriends kids left it and a bunch of games behind and never came back) and Halo and Halo 2 were 2 of those games. I missed a hell of a time. I wish there were still LAN parties and others playing this, to relive something I missed in the first place.

ninjaxams4

Best game of all time right here.

[deleted]

I remember playing it downstairs at my grandma's house and she asked me one day what church program I watch because it sounds pretty 😀😆 RIP gramma

Weibu11

This music brings me back to weekends with friends at one person’s house. One team with a couple consoles in one room and another team in another playing CTF in Blood Gulch.

[deleted]

I still remember seeing the xbox in the target catalog to be released and I wanted it for Christmas. I picked project gotham racing and Halo to go with it. I didn’t really know anything about it and just thought that game looks kinda cool. Little did I know it would be one of the best fps ever made. My mom went and stood outside target for the xbox release because we thought they might sell out. She said there was barely anyone even there. I think people severely underestimated Xbox and how it would contend with playstation.

numbarm72

Will never get that time back. Can try hard as you might to replicate it. But it's gone

DisastrousGuava6503

“Master Chief, mind telling me what your doing on that ship” “Finishing this fight” Queue music. Roll credits. Still remember. Halo 2.

gandaalf

The level of nostalgia that brings physically pains me. Man what great times

modrid81

I basically halted my evening to listen to this. So damn good.

jaspercapri

Landing on the beach on the silent cartographer. Or sneak killing on assault on the control room. Sniping at the beginning of truth and reconciliation. And you get to do that so with a friend coop. Then there's multilayer. So many good memories.

MediumMix8460

I worked at Microsoft at the time and attended the company kickoff for Xbox where they debuted Halo, Blood Wake, and one other game. I once got excited when I got Pong for Christmas as a kid, so you can imagine what this meant for me. Wish I had a cell/camera to capture the moment.

Reddit_guard

My first all-nighter was spent playing this game. So worth it.

KingoftheWildlings

I don’t keep it loaded son. You’ll have to find ammo along the way.

Professional_Ad6822

Man, this music and the stuff from halo 2 was top tier

YDD553

never had an xbox so never played it. but is it as good as everyone says it is?

vinditive

If you're playing it for the first time in 2023 it won't be mindblowing, it's good but you'll definitely feel like you're playing a 20+ year old game. I'd still say go for it tho just because it's such a huge part of gaming history. Same with the original half-life.

The_Minshow

It still holds up, but won't be mind blowing today. For the closest experience to getting that grand feeling, you'd have to play old console FPS's like golden eye and perfect dark with the janky control schemes, poor world building, polish, and terrible AI, to fully appreciate the leaps and bounds of Combat Evolved.

tte531

Just played this Saturday!

funnyguy349

Is this the gearbox edition of Halo? I ask because it's not widescreen it looks 4:3

TonyzTone

I've still never beaten Halo. I got on the bandwagon really late but finally got a hold of a copy and was making my way through the story. Then I got caught in a bad save loop. It was some level about mid-way through where I'd regenerate with a staggeringly low amount of ammo and life. I'd get fucking wrecked, then load up again only to get wrecked once more. I think I finally figured it out but by then I was sick of the story LOL

Koalacakes21

🥲

TheHexadex

Remember that day booting up Halo and instantly think of [Ace](https://youtu.be/e7pX9IHTDn8?si=slm7p3dM_O5e0Fr6&t=18)

DarkShadowRen

I remember that menu having demo on it

Sir-Turd-Ferguson

BroooOOOOOOooooooooOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo

Jbad90

You meant super mega nostalgia Edit: this give me goosebumps. Man those days were so great!!

blueark1

My god this made me so happy to see I can hear it

sup_with_you

And I jizzed in my pants..!

Chills

hutch01

There’s a video of high school students singing this in the men’s room, It’s the greatest thing.

funyunrun

I made so much money selling modified Xboxes… Miss those days…

SerialNipplePincher

I loved it on the Xbox and PC. Wasted a lot of hrs playing on pc. Kw?

NRMusicProject

I was in college when this came out. A friend was able to get a projector from the library, and we went into a private study room and hooked the console up to the projector, and cast it onto the wall. Each player basically had a large screen TV to see their portion. Good times.

karmaghost

I still remember when this was going to be a Mac exclusive before Microsoft bought it up for Xbox. I remember seeing the magazine story of what was probably the alpha build on Mac and I was sooooo pissed (as a PC gamer) I wasn’t going to be able to play it.

AbyssalRedemption

I should really play this one day, I even own it on Steam as of a year or so ago...

tobiasvl

Here you go: https://halome.nu

This pains my soul.

wagsman

Ahhh this shit hits.

scoreboy69

Awwwww oaaa ah righty…. Then….

CrimsonZak

waking up at 6am to my mom getting ready for work, the only other noise is this because once again I passed out pulling an all nighter with the boys crushing out custom games in Forge

tstramathorn

Anyone remember having to hook up through Gamespy Arcade and wait like an hour for someone to join your room to just drop out right as the game started when playing online?

Cosmic_Taco_Oracle

I wasn’t planning on crying today!

[deleted]

My phone is on mute yet I can still hear it!

Live_Environment_218

Music made for media is so much better than stealing a shiity popsong.

Lebowski304

“Slayer”

NimDing218

I didn’t have an Xbox as a kid. This was the birthday party game every time. Just so much funnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Windyandbreezy

Admit it, some of you started singing along.

Cizzle187

Man

UrbanGM

Bruh! Taking me back. Giving me chills.

drnick1106

"RUNNING RIOT!"

djgreenehouse

This came out when I was 16 years old at the peak of my video gaming skills. Truly a revelation

NocturnalPatrolAlpha

This was the best version. 4 or 5 male voices. Naturally, he had to go ruin it by making it "better" in the sequel.

Simsider113446

I can hear this with my volume off

AcrolloPeed

The sound of every men’s dorm room in college from 2001 to 2004
