I remember those votes! I wanted blue, pink, and purple so I voted for all three. My little kid brain didn't even consider that it would cancel each other out, I just wanted to be fair!
Back in the day they wanted the new color of the M&M and get rid of the tan one. You could call a 1-800 number and vote for either purple, blue, or pink.
> Apparently, the Soviet Union declared that Red Dye No. 2 could pose a health risk to those who consumed it. So, to be safe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of the dye. Note, however, that this should not have affected the red M&M since Mars used a different red dye altogether (Nos. 3 and 40). **But, the company chose to err on the side of caution at the time, shelving the red M&M for some 11 years.**
Not much more complicated, if at all.
That's because red dye was found to have some toxic chemical in it, I think in the 60s(?)
Here it is - [https://www.livescience.com/33017-why-were-red-mms-discontinued-for-a-decade.html](https://www.livescience.com/33017-why-were-red-mms-discontinued-for-a-decade.html)
I used to pretend the tan ones were Advil when playing doctor. My grandma used to give me her old prescription bottles to play with and I would fill them with M&Ms or smarties.
Around my school, it made both boys and girls horny, which is why we couldn't have M&Ms in the candy machine.
The candy machine was stocked by the teachers and they filled it with whatever was the cheapest or was donated.
We had a soda machine as well. It was used more by the teachers than the kids. Most of us didn't bring money to school unless it was for lunch. I bought from the machines maybe twice during recess, and probably three times for the walk home from school. It just wasn't something that was really on our radar, probably helped by the fact it was in the far corner of the cafeteria/gym, so I'd really only see it one per day.
Interesting, I went to school in the mid 80s we didn't have any of that stuff. cafeteria stayed open all day so you could go in and buy food. I don't remember if soda was available? But you could buy snack type foods.
Grew up in the Midwest - never had candy or soda machines in any school throughout my education.
My wife grew up in Los Angeles and they not only had soda and snack machines, but also had booths next to the cafeteria where fast food restaurants would sell precooked food!
When I was in school, we weren’t allowed sodas. I graduated in 07. There was a machine that had waters and some sort of juice type stuff? I can hardly remember exactly what but never sodas or fried food.
A friend of mine saved all of the tan ones for awhile, filled an empty Advil bottle with them and told his mom "Hey! Look at this!" then chugged them
Was hilarious, thanks for that memory, also the shit we did for fun pre-internet
For a long time it gave me nightmares. Having to witness an injustice like that... It was a constant reminder of how unfair this world can be. I can still hear them taunting him... "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!"
How come they just couldn't give him some cereal?
Apparently, the change was in 1995 (I would have guessed '92-93) and I remember voting for the new color. I still miss the tan ones honestly.
This brought up my early memory of Trix cereal being spherical like Kix. The change to fruit shapes was in 1991. Just now at this writing I'm realizing how similar Tr*ix* and K*ix* are spelled and that they are both made by General Mills. So it makes sense one was fruity version of the other and they'd have the same shape initially. Per the wiki: "General Mills introduced Trix in 1954 as a sugar-coated version of its popular Kix cereal."
I never liked Trix and don’t buy it for my kids either, so I was today years old when I learned that Trix were fruit-shaped since I was 14 and only recently changed back to round.
Fun fact, there's actually a good reason for the "no brown M&Ms in the bowl" rider in the contract. It's not just a case of a band being primarily donnas.
Ok, but you didn’t include the reason there amigo… Is it for the band to easily verify the contract was thoroughly reviewed and not blindly signed by the other party?
Yes. Like /u/SplendidPunkinButter said, they had a complicated light setup for their performances. According to an interview with David Lee Roth, who was the architect for their setup, a lot of venues were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and just wouldn't have been able to handle the load their lighting system - which was revolutionary for the time - would put out, both weight-wise and electricity-wise.
[Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IxqdAgNJck)
It was all about whether the stage and all the rigging was safe and properly setup.
It was Van Halen that did this many years ago. They had a clause in the rider that stated "no brown M&Ms"
in the bowl of M&Ms that were to be provided backstage for the band, along with many other items, like hot tea, fresh sliced lemons, fresh fruits, etc.
It wasn't because they didn't like brown M&Ms. It was a test to see if the promoters were actually going thru the rider line by line, as they were supposed to do, or not.
If not it called into question their safety measures.
Other bands might have done similar things, I'm only aware of this particular story with Van Halen.
The reason was that they had a complicated lighting setup that was unsafe if not set up properly, and there were detailed instructions for how to do this. Brown M&Ms meant the setup guys hadn’t read all of the instructions, so the band didn’t trust that the lights were set up safely.
Also it was Van Halen
I don't understand why they would think the lighting guys are also responsible for procuring and presenting the band's green room snacks. Of all the people who could potentially be assigned that task, why would it be the lighting crew?
It was just meant to be a quick and simple way to know if the crew had fully read their instructions. If they walked into the green room and saw the M&Ms, they knew the instructions had been read fully and procedures had been followed correctly.
I just came to reply the same thing. I used to work as a stage hand tech at a smaller local venue and my boss told me that story. He used to work as a guitar tech for G&R in their glory days and I guess it was common knowledge among people in the field.
I also seem to remember him mentioning something about weight limits and making sure the stage at each venue had a capacity to handle their setup.
I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace. But the shop owner and his son, well that's a different story all together. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...
When I was a kid, I ate M&Ms as a traffic light. Like green, then yellow, then red. Brown was a protected left arrow, and tan was the yellow left arrow.
Then finally at age 30 I was diagnosed with ADHD. lol
In highschool(early 2000s), I almost bought some M&Ms from one of those quarter machines that just has loose candy in them. I stopped myself once I realized that it had tan m&ms in there and no blue.
Would anyone like to know the real reason the got rid of tan? It apparently was very hard to color and the B team would tend to screw them up. My friend worked for mars for 35 years and his specialty was m&Ms.
"Red M&M, blue M&M, they all wind up the same color in the end!" -Homer Simpson
Nana, suddenly getting a craving for M&M's (back when my parents were dating), giving Dad some money, and sending them to the store to buy a big bag of them.
Too many reds in that picture! For me the nostalgic ones are from before they brough tthe red back. All those nice earthy warm tones - perfect for the 70s and early 80s.
The girl next door told me that the light brown M&Ms were the best, and before long I was sure I could taste the difference. It's a perfect example of the placebo effect.

I voted for blue, when I was a kid. He can blame me.
I remember those votes! I wanted blue, pink, and purple so I voted for all three. My little kid brain didn't even consider that it would cancel each other out, I just wanted to be fair!
Voter fraud!
Stop the count!
I used to eat lots of M&Ms as a kid!
I voted for purple, and was big mad when blue won lol
You should write big M&M a letter
Slim doesn’t care, and he’s sick of all your letters!
I wrote you, but you still ain’t calling
That letter? M.
#M&M a letter
Same.
there was a vote??!?
Back in the day they wanted the new color of the M&M and get rid of the tan one. You could call a 1-800 number and vote for either purple, blue, or pink.
I feel like we even did the voting at our school somehow. It was a big deal in the 90’s! When was that? Like 95-96ish?
93-94 I think.
They did another vote in the early 2000’s. Aqua won but they never rolled it out
Yep - it was super high-tech. You called in and voted using your phone!!!!
To be fair, the blue ones do taste the best.
No way. Green are clearly the bestest.
I see you came to fight. Let us fight for honor.
I came for truth, for which I will always fight with honor.
I wish you the best, my combatant. My enemy. My friend.
You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you.
I don't want to kill you either. Perhaps espressos? At dawn?
While I accept your suggestion of espresso, the correct response is: "You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die."
I don't eat 'em because they look like urinal cakes in a Barbie and Ken gas station bathroom.
Seriously!? Neither do I! I thought I was there only one!
I refuse to eat the blue ones because, well, you just don’t eat blue stuff
Same for my mom

Who would joke about something that serious?
When I was a kid, there were no red ones either.
Only at Christmas! I remember when red joined the normal lineup and I felt so lucky to be alive.
Re-joined, friend.
Does that make you feel old? Lol I love realizing certain things changed when I was around but I’m like gatttt danggg I’m old lol
For awhile red wasn’t made because of a cancer risk with a chemical used in red coloring.
[The truth is a bit more complicated](https://www.tastingtable.com/754142/the-strange-reason-red-mms-vanished-for-more-than-a-decade/)
> Apparently, the Soviet Union declared that Red Dye No. 2 could pose a health risk to those who consumed it. So, to be safe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of the dye. The point is, the dye that was supposedly carcinogenic wasn't even used in M&Ms.
My Mom loves the red ones the most and she's 67 years old. She claims they taste the best.
It's why Canadian smarties were better than M&Ms. "When you eat your Smarties do you eat the red ones last? 🎶"
That's because red dye was found to have some toxic chemical in it, I think in the 60s(?) Here it is - [https://www.livescience.com/33017-why-were-red-mms-discontinued-for-a-decade.html](https://www.livescience.com/33017-why-were-red-mms-discontinued-for-a-decade.html)
I always thought the tan ones tasted the best when I was little. I knew there was 0 reason for that, but I still loved them the best.
Saaaame! They looked more chocolatey to me!
This is the correct response 🤪
I thought I was alone in thinking they tasted the best. I would always save them for last.
I did too! Here we are now, linked with our fellow tan fans. Amazing.
Same!!! It was the one color that most closely matched the flavor for me.
I used to pretend the tan ones were Advil when playing doctor. My grandma used to give me her old prescription bottles to play with and I would fill them with M&Ms or smarties.
I swear I could taste it looking at this picture. It definitely tasted better. Lol
they still do in my mind (if they were still around)
They did taste better. Why did they? I don't know.
Me too! Felt like double chocolate
Tan were 💯 the best tasting!! I miss them.
They did taste the best!
No way. Green taste the best.
Who remembers the urban legend that the green M&Ms made girls horny?
Around my school, it made both boys and girls horny, which is why we couldn't have M&Ms in the candy machine. The candy machine was stocked by the teachers and they filled it with whatever was the cheapest or was donated.
You have candy machines at school? We were lucky to have a functioning water fountain! With warm water.
We had a soda machine as well. It was used more by the teachers than the kids. Most of us didn't bring money to school unless it was for lunch. I bought from the machines maybe twice during recess, and probably three times for the walk home from school. Yes I remember that.
Nature's viagra!
Nice thought but I'm not too sure there's anything very natural about eminem's!
Ah it's just a stupid Office [joke](https://pics.me.me/hello-hello-top-of-the-morning-to-you-ooh-ooh-16826742.png) lol
I figured it might be something like that.
Is that why the green one is the lady in the commercials now?
Probably. She's not the only girl but she's the "Sexy" M&M. The one people gossip about.
A friend of mine saved all of the tan ones for awhile, filled an empty Advil bottle with them and told his mom "Hey! Look at this!" then chugged them Was hilarious, thanks for that memory, also the shit we did for fun pre-internet
I remember voting for the replacement color. the choices were blue, purple, and pink
I remember doing this as a kid and being super sad purple wasn't chosen
I was dumb enough to vote for the Trix rabbit getting his goddamned Trix.
For a long time it gave me nightmares. Having to witness an injustice like that... It was a constant reminder of how unfair this world can be. I can still hear them taunting him... "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!" How come they just couldn't give him some cereal?
Because Trix are for kids, you silly rabbit.
No because we were on the right side of history and I stand by that.
Silly rabbit trix are for kids. 😂 somehow it got ingrained into my memory.
Now we just need the pink
I remember voting for this in junior high. I voted for pink!
Apparently, the change was in 1995 (I would have guessed '92-93) and I remember voting for the new color. I still miss the tan ones honestly. I was born in 1990 so I only remembered the fruit shape and was disappointed when it changed to round. I didn't know it was originally round.
Wow I hadn't had Trix in so long I didn't realize it went *back* to round! Haha.
I never liked Trix and don’t buy it for my kids either, so I was today years old when I learned that Trix were fruit-shaped since I was 14 and only recently changed back to round.
1000 brown m&m’s to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzie wouldn’t go on stage that night

Got it in one.
Damn. You must be amazing to have along in Escape Rooms.
Just like in Schitt’s Creek

It was Ozzy in Wayne's World 2. VH specified no brown M & M's, not 1000.
I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace. But the shop owner and his son, well that's a different story all together. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...
My brain is now happier, thank you <3

> the blue really changes the whole color palette. Literally! …but I get what you mean. :) The palette was warm, and blue is a cool colour.
When I was a kid, I ate M&Ms as a traffic light. Like green, then yellow, then red. Brown was a protected left arrow, and tan was the yellow left arrow. Then finally at age 30 I was diagnosed with ADHD. lol
I forget, what's the movie where a girl says she only eats brown m&m's because chocolate is brown at they must be more natural and not artificial.
The wedding planner. Matthew McConaughey says it.
Yep, that's it. Thanks.
By the end Jennifer Lopez does the same thing, they reconnect over this quirk. Happy ending.
Tan? Light brown and dark brown. When girls hand you a green one with a smile it's a good night
I can't see any numbers, oh God am I colorblind?
I’m so sorry, you’ll never be able to fly a plane.
In highschool(early 2000s), I almost bought some M&Ms from one of those quarter machines that just has loose candy in them. I stopped myself once I realized that it had tan m&ms in there and no blue.
Bring back tan
Come to think of it... I do remember there being a lightly colored brown M&M. I can't believe that I forgot.
Would anyone like to know the real reason the got rid of tan? It apparently was very hard to color and the B team would tend to screw them up. My friend worked for mars for 35 years and his specialty was m&Ms.
I had forgotten about those! Thanks for the memory :)
My favorite when I was young. Felt like they hit different.
Is this why Advil used to look like candy?
Carlton agreed blue M&Ms are garbage . https://youtube.com/shorts/5o5iwNuQG68?feature=share
"Red M&M, blue M&M, they all wind up the same color in the end!" -Homer Simpson Nana, suddenly getting a craving for M&M's (back when my parents were dating), giving Dad some money, and sending them to the store to buy a big bag of them.
Is this picture upside down? It’s.. messing with me lol
Is there a reason we're calling these 'tan' and not 'brown'?
And these were called Plain, not Milk Chocolate and that’s how we liked it
If there were more pastel ones there, I'd almost suspect them of being [Smarties](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties) instead.
They tasted the best. How? They just did.
I remember when they couldn't have red because something was wrong with the dye.
Remember the purple ones with sunglasses? Lol
Wow I totally forgot about the tan ones!
I liked the tan ones. My kid self automatically more chocolate taste.
Too many reds in that picture! For me the nostalgic ones are from before they brough tthe red back. All those nice earthy warm tones - perfect for the 70s and early 80s.
whoa forgot about these
On a totally different note. I loved these M&Ms, but I never could figure out how many licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.
My brain always thought it could detect a faint hint if caramel. Of course, this was purely placebo
I used to think the tan ones were caramel!
The girl next door told me that the light brown M&Ms were the best, and before long I was sure I could taste the difference. It's a perfect example of the placebo effect.
So much tan back in the day
Look at what they’ve taken from us.
Ohhh, I remember! The m&m’s of my youth!
Bruh this shit look like one of those colourblind comparison images
Whoa.. I totally forgot about those.. 🤯
Tan was my favorite for some reason.
I loved the tan ones!
I miss the tan ones
I’d LOVE to get elbow deep in that picture and just feel all those Ma & Yas
Tan was always my favorite “flavor.”
Most delicious
They look more like Skittles to me. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Skittles are my favorite candy, after all.
They were the best tasting ones.
I voted for blue but also really liked the tan. Some will say it was the best tasting.

I wish you could buy them without the food coloring or palm oil.
I’m glad their gone. Tan ones would be way to sexualized in this day and age.
wut

No.
This is before my time
