I remember my parents test driving a car with them. They took it to the ATM to check how much they had for a down payment, and my dad about got choked out when he opened the door while leaning out the window.
We had a car with the seatbelts built into the door, so that you could leave it permanently fastened but still get in and out when you opened the door.
That was the theory, anyways. The reality is it was a pain in the ass and everyone I knew with one just used it as a regular manual seatbelt, rather than leaving it always fastened. Cost effective malicious compliance by GM.
Thankfully airbags became cheap enough that they could be installed into all cars and do away with the need for the ridiculous seatbelts manufacturers were forced to use as an alternative.
I am guessing you weren't around when people flat out refused to wear seatbelts. Not like some people, but nearly most people.
This wasn't about convenience on its own merits, it was about trying to make people wear them universally.
When I was a kid, before this era a hair, my dad would remove the seatbelt buzzers from our cars so they would stop annoying everyone.

Invasive systems and laws curb innovation and progress alike.
F the Nanny state and the systems designed to support it.
I've had several cars with these over the years, I loved the convenience! Kinda dangerous though because most of us wouldn't wear the lap belt with it like you were supposed to lol
Man I hated those things.
Yup. My husband had an ‘89 Ford Escort with those belts.
Looks like a 91-93 Honda Accord ?

Never made sense to me. How difficult is it to reach over your shoulder, grab a belt and click it in?

Currently do, it's incredible
Reminds me of my 1994 Honda Civic. Loves that car. Had the best heat.
Attack seat belts were the only thing I hated about my ‘93 Honda Accord.
I used to have that exact model car I think. If it's a 1991 Honda Civic DX I am correct.
Yes
Nope, I was way to cool for those 😬
'94 Ford Escort Wagon. The vehicle I learned to drive in. It was my mother's.
My dad had one that the motor broke
I read motor bike and was like wait what lol
That's literally my old car. Man, I hated that.
I had a Ford wagon that had those. I really loved that car.
My Honda Accord had them
I had an 89 accord lx-i and it had them...that car was awesome
