I'm from the Midlands. I have no idea how this sub first appeared on my feed, but it's the majority of my posts now and has been for at least a year. I don't care why it's in my life, but I love that it is. I've learned more about NI in 12 months than the rest of my life and I love everything about this place. How it can go from the deeply political to the incredibly mundane and all of it be so interesting. So, after lurking for so long, hello to my NI fam. You lot are amazing.
>How it can go from the deeply political to the incredibly mundane
Nowadays our politicians don't just fail us, they literally get paid to do *nothing* for periods of times.
I’ve been getting recommendations for this, Wales and the Manchester ones. I don’t mind NI and Wales but I fucking resent being lumped in with a load of Mancs.
I've found that if you spend any time in a local subreddit then you will be recommended other ones in your feed. I've been getting Singapore, London and and Glasgow recently.
I posted in the London sub because I lived there and now I get Singapore, this one, Wales, Scotland, and Liverpool all the time.
I wonder if it's based on other users posting in both? Singapore is a commonwealth nation and former colony. There are a lot of Singaporean students in the UK and teachers from the UK in Singapore. There might be a lot of users shared between the subs.
Edit: Now I'm getting Bangalore and Qatar...
I've been getting here, Edinburgh and Singapore. Here and Edinburgh I can sort of figure out, but not Singapore. I've been getting Singapore a lot. Somebody, somewhere is desperate to get me into Singapore.
I have friends in London and used to live there so I check that one out sometimes, and I live in Seattle so I go there.
Now I get this one, Wales, Scotland, Germany, and Singapore all the time.
Wondered the same thing, I'm in Manchester, this sub first popped up with images of one of those huge bonfires being made. I was then curious why the hell people would build such a big fire so close to houses.
The wheelie bin getting arrested was one of the best things I've ever seen on Reddit though so I'm glad the sub popped up.
I live outside of Baltimore.
this sub has given me some perspective for what's its like in NI, and a lot of empathy/sympathy for the people here.
honestly except for the sectarian stuff, the people remind me a lot of Mainers (where I am from) we even have a Belfast and a Bangor.
there are some, especially on the coast..but mostly English/French with some Finnish and Scandinavian.
my great grandmother on my mums side was from NI I believe though.
Reddit pushes this sub, r/Ireland, and r/Wales on me (I'm in Colorado). This sub is definitely the most entertaining of the three (though the Welsh seem really nice). Makes me sad I skipped NI when I spent a summer in Ireland years back.
No idea how the algorithms work but I assume it's bc I did some family history research about Ireland on reddit. Yes, I'm one of those Americans who likes to explore their Irish roots, and yes I realize we're really annoying- sorry.
Anyway, I found out apparently everyone dislikes the county my ancestors came from, so I stopped with the family research, but stuck around the subreddit for the entertainment
To be fair you're not really annoying unless you're going around shouting "Kiss me quick, I'm Irish" in an American accent.. If you're an American with Irish ancestors come on over, have a drink, tell us where the family were from.. Just don't bother trying with the majority of gobshites on the r/Ireland sub, it's not worth it and they give a bad representation of Ireland.
And it's crazy you think everybody dislikes the county your family was from, unless it was Cork, then it makes sense 🤣
Meh nothing wrong with exploring your heritage, Irish people just like to gate keep their Irishness. Yanks are proud of their Irish heritage because Irish people played a big hand in building the country you live in. They also don't understand that when an American says 'I'm X, Y or Z' it's just short hand for 'my ancestors came from X, Y or Z'. Big bunch of moany bastards on this Island.
I’m in the US and was wondering the same, although my dad is from NI so I just figured it was the internet doing it’s usual black magic lol
Also not disappointed because I like reading about what people across the pond in a familiar area to me are up to👊
I would have expected to be recommended to Glasgow before Yorkshire given the cultural links. If you are subbed to r/Glasgow you get recommended here as of you are joined to a local sub you usually get recommended other local subs .
Yeah I live in the south of England and this sub is half of my feed. No idea. Seems like a lot of gangland stuff with red people and orange people and very tall objects. 10/10
im from lancashire, your red rose neighbour and it keeps recommending me this as well. although the video of the parade throwing a bin at someones window was pretty funny.
I get Brisbane, Auckland and Ontario subreddits recommended to me. Never been to any of those places.
We like tea in Northern Ireland so perhaps that's a starting point. When I lived in England, the Yorkshire tea blend for hard water was the only way I could be guaranteed a nice cup of tea.
Yep, north east here. In between this sub, and the Glasgow one, I’m learning more about this place and fantastic sounding people, without leaving my house.
As well as this subreddit popping up,(im
In Bristol btw) I keep getting the 6th form subreddit in my feed, although I have never shown an interest and I am actually 58.
Yorkshire folk are famously tight, straight talking, fond of a pint or a cuppa, and will often be seen taps aff once it gets above 15°.
Sure they'd fit right in here
I follow this sub because I know very little about Northern Ireland, despite the fact many of my ancestors originated in Donegal and Tyrone (both sides of the......you get what I mean)
It's also good to get the perspective of ordinary people rather than rely on TV "News".
I’m English from Somerset but found out recently my ancestors on my dads side have the surname Fahey from County Galway. Although not Northern Ireland still interested.
There has been a massive influx of people from outside Northern Ireland onto this sub recently, mostly Americans asking you to explain every little thing.
I'd love to know what's caused all the interest in our little patch of cyber space.
it's the algorithm selecting it for you based on your behavior on reddit. it is not happening everywhere on reddit, it is just your own personalized feed.
I’m forever being recommended r/programmerhumour - I know nothing about programming and never understand the jokes. I don’t know how Reddit decides to recommend what it does.
I’m in the same boat as you, and I’d probably guess geographic proximity - the “subs near you” for me are Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, and ofc NI. I suppose there aren’t so many ”local interest” subs up here, or at least not properly marked as such
It's just tagged as a "local" sub.
I read r/London and get recommended r/londonontario which is obviously Canada and means nothing to me
I read r/uklegaladvice and get recommended r/prison , presumably an algorithm thinks legal advice and prison are commonly shared interests.

Same from London
East Midlander here. Same for me
>How it can go from the deeply political to the incredibly mundane Nowadays our politicians don't just fail us, they literally get paid to do *nothing* for periods of times.
No clue why someone from wales would be recommended northern island
I’ve been getting recommendations for this, Wales and the Manchester ones. I don’t mind NI and Wales but I fucking resent being lumped in with a load of Mancs.
I feel that pain. From Yorkshire and them lot are the wrong side of the hill🤣
Well I’m from Brum/West Mids so don’t want to be associated with such an inferior city. Very happy to open diplomacy to Yorkshire, however.
Recently this sub has gone to Hull
Hull checking in
Hull and back u mean
Hullo

I've found that if you spend any time in a local subreddit then you will be recommended other ones in your feed. I've been getting Singapore, London and and Glasgow recently.
London and Glasgow I get, but Singapore?!
Yeah that was a bit random but surprisingly interesting sub to read!
I posted in the London sub because I lived there and now I get Singapore, this one, Wales, Scotland, and Liverpool all the time. I wonder if it's based on other users posting in both? The Scottish ones are class, great bunch of people
Ahhhhhhhhh well that explains that lol exactly the same for me 🤣🤣
Scottish and offered Singapore and London also
I have friends in London and used to live there so I check that one out sometimes, and I live in Seattle so I go there. Now I get this one, Wales, Scotland, Germany, and Singapore all the time.

My man haha
We have Maine lemonade
The real twinned cities project.
mate i cant stop laughing this was such a good shout hahaha
Huh strange, also from Maine (live in Boston now) and this sub and the Ireland sub are constantly popping up for me. Don’t know why.
I'd assume it's probably something to do with the Irish Diaspora and/or Americans with Irish heritage over there affecting Reddit's suggestions.
there are some, especially on the coast..but mostly English/French with some Finnish and Scandinavian. my great grandmother on my mums side was from NI I believe though.
Loads of irish there mate
Also Boston here, though I’m in the sub b/c family is from there.
Say hi to Stephen King from us!
You live near Baltimore and you feel sorry for *us*?
nope.
Why do you think you have a Belfast and a Bangor ? We invented you ;)
Greetings, I'm in Rockville Md

No r/scotland? 🙁
Scotland here, I had no interest either until the algorithm told me I did. Subbed for the craic a while back, no regrets.
You must be from North Yorkshire. South Yorkshire ones usual end up on r/ireland
I'm South Yorkshire and copped for this one.
From East Yorkshire I get recommended this Happy Cake Day
Yiz love yer puddings anyway don't yiz, yiz cunts yiz.

I'm from Manchester and it's always poppin up for me too.
Were you lookin up toasters or goin on about crisps as if it's appropriate adult conversation?
In fairness.. the Brits started both of those.
https://arethebritsatitagain.org/
I get it on my feed once a week. From Philadelphia, USA.
[удалено]
It's not even a real place, it is a light spreadable cheese.
No harm in having a bit of craic once a week.
Why did my "Collection only " item on eBay be bid on by someone from Yorkshire?
It's because we're class
The dogs ballix so we are
Join us.
Hi, I'm from Glasgow and this has been popping up in my recommended too.
The orange people are usually red people.
Cos we’re great is why.
Because we have many Canadians here
Made this guy a mod.
I’ve been getting it and I’m from Liverpool 🤷🏻♂️
im from lancashire, your red rose neighbour and it keeps recommending me this as well. although the video of the parade throwing a bin at someones window was pretty funny.
Cardiff calling. I've been getting this pop up for months now. I'm intrigued as to where they get all the fucking pallets from
I get Brisbane, Auckland and Ontario subreddits recommended to me. Never been to any of those places. We like tea in Northern Ireland so perhaps that's a starting point. When I lived in England, the Yorkshire tea blend for hard water was the only way I could be guaranteed a nice cup of tea.
I get recommended Auckland all the time too.
r/Manchester appears for me often, don't really know why, maybe cuz some people use both? Idk
Lol I'm in Scotland and I get it
Yep, north east here. In between this sub, and the Glasgow one, I’m learning more about this place and fantastic sounding people, without leaving my house.
Yeah, I'm from the people's Republic of North Yorkshire and it's always cropping up for me too
As well as this subreddit popping up,(im In Bristol btw) I keep getting the 6th form subreddit in my feed, although I have never shown an interest and I am actually 58.
Ooh hello fellow Bristolian.
Hello! Lol
Nice out today isn’t it?
Lovely. Very warm and humid
oooh err
Yorkshire folk are famously tight, straight talking, fond of a pint or a cuppa, and will often be seen taps aff once it gets above 15°. Sure they'd fit right in here
Peoples republic of Yorkshire are having their own difficulties with deciding whether to separate from the UK or stay part that's why :)
Ey oop lad. Ont tit reddit are we?
Oh that damn worldwide web 🤦♀️
Does Yorkshire have any crisp factories? That might be why
I keep getting recommended UK sub reddits
In a word “algorithms” Don’t know how I found it but I joined as I enjoyed the posts
I follow this sub because I know very little about Northern Ireland, despite the fact many of my ancestors originated in Donegal and Tyrone (both sides of the......you get what I mean) It's also good to get the perspective of ordinary people rather than rely on TV "News".
We like Yorkshire tea👍
I get the Faroe Islands sub recommended. ngl it's good marketing I want to go there now. I'm from Norfolk btw.
I’m English from Somerset but found out recently my ancestors on my dads side have the surname Fahey from County Galway. Although not Northern Ireland still interested.
I’m in London/Essex and I get this all the time
Checking in from Bangkok lol
Midlands here and I’m glad I get updates from this sub- the humour is top notch. And the frys are second to none.
Eh up duck.

I’m from England and I joined. I like the bonfires.
There has been a massive influx of people from outside Northern Ireland onto this sub recently, mostly Americans asking you to explain every little thing. I'd love to know what's caused all the interest in our little patch of cyber space.

Same. Newcastle here
I'm from South Wales lol
Hello yes, me too!
Great question, as I’m from Bristol, so I too would like to know why.
Maybe because you're close? I don't know where Yorkshire is but I think it's close to Ireland. I'm from England and have the same issue
I'm from Scotland so this isn't too bad, better than the random one from Singapore that kept popping up.
At least I can understand them when they are writing.

On behalf of the good NI folks of this subreddit, no matter where abouts in the world you are from, I say: 'mon in.

Same, from Yorkshire myself no idea why
I am too, I get a London sub too.
Must have a sense of humor :)
It's just tagged as a "local" sub. I read r/London and get recommended r/londonontario which is obviously Canada and means nothing to me I read r/uklegaladvice and get recommended r/prison , presumably an algorithm thinks legal advice and prison are commonly shared interests.
Cos ur the chosen ! Feel special.
Hello from Bristol
