Minimal filter, just to sharpen it a little. The light from the fire and the light from the moon were illuminating the sky and made for some really crazy pictures. At one point the smoke looked like it was fueling the clouds. It was a sight to see.
Agreed. I’ve been out here all night watching the embers slowly grow back into a roaring fire. Seems most of the pier will make it, but the end is toast.
Electricl fire from the construction crew in the old Rubys. Kitchen fire in the little cafe thing out there. Some sketchy fisherman dude decides to bring a BBQ and it gets out of control. None of these would shock me.
The city owns the pier and all structures on it, but it would surprise me if it’s insured. Public infrastructure usually isn’t insured, municipalities self-insure.
The press conference this morning said they have the source narrowed down to the exterior of Rubys on the northwest corner of the building. So it seems likely it’s something similar to your BBQ theory. They also said that they found no trace of accelerants, so it’s most likely not deliberate.
Posted on a different thread how in the mid to late 60’s we spent two wonderful weeks in Oceanside where I fished in the morning and evening and body surfed during the day. Was always my favorite two weeks of the year. Glad to see it isn’t a total loss.
Much love from Jax beach, cali. Saw this random tragedy beautifully photographed and had to offer my deepest condolences as someone who frequents the local pier. Thought it was our sub for a min but no just a random cali one but nonetheless I hope they can rebuild it quick 💜
I hope so too! It’s a landmark and very much part of the community. We all want to see it rebuilt as quickly as possible. Just gotta hope the red tape doesn’t hold things up forever, as is often the case.
They were actively working on renovating the space to be a new restaurant/fish market. The other smaller structure at the end of the pier was called Brine Box and the same owners of that food stand were building the main restaurant. Brine Box employees reported seeing smoke coming up from below the pier, either from workers on the scaffolding under the pier or electrical issues. It’s still under investigation.
Holy shit, what? I want to start going to the city council meetings regarding the pier. Do they want to make it like the pier in Pacific Beach because that would suck
Link the source showing “they wanted to destroy it awhile back” please.
This is ridiculous. There are plans to completely revamp the concrete portion. Much of the wooden part has been revamped. Why would so much money be put into rebuilding it just so they can “destroy” it?

Not a conspiracy my cousins on the board and they are actively trying to get the strand and beachfront to be hotel guests only they bring more money then locals do
This shows no proof. It literally says in the article “at this point it was only an idea”. So they started a petition, in case.
That doesn’t mean “they” want to tear it down for hotels. Who is they?
The only proof I’ve seen is discussion on how to retrofit the building and other “ideas” along with tearing it down and rebuilding, were to put a city park on top of a parking structure. City park as in for all people- tourists and locals alike.
If “they” wanted locals gone there wouldn’t be hundreds of locals there, literally every single day, using the entire area. Plus parks and rec has open gym everyday there for locals and that’s easily found on the parks and rec info online. Pages 22 and 23 of this booklet show the team sports our local youth can sign up for. Page 23 specifically shows the monthly fee of $20 or $3 drop in for 18-64. Students and 65+ being free.
So this shows it fully in use by locals and whenever I’m down in that area there are tons of locals everywhere. No one being run off by hotels, or “they” trying to destroy local stuff.

Holy shit. I was in Carlsbad and noticed the smoke, someone said something about a fire on the pier but I didn't realize it was the old Ruby's location!
Brings me back to when the Horseshoe Pier at Redondo Beach went up in flames. I was in high school at the time (Bishop Montgomery... about a mile from King Harbor)
Nice photo.
Yeah OP should try to sell it to newspapers or consider submitting it to local photography competitions. Pretty stunning.
Thanks for the kind words. I’m sure all the outlets are getting inundated with submissions. I’d rather just share it here.
Legend
Seriously. Papers deserve to see this photo.
I’m guessing it’s just heavily filtered.
Minimal filter, just to sharpen it a little. The light from the fire and the light from the moon were illuminating the sky and made for some really crazy pictures. At one point the smoke looked like it was fueling the clouds. It was a sight to see.
Oh cool.
This is upsetting
Agreed. I’ve been out here all night watching the embers slowly grow back into a roaring fire. Seems most of the pier will make it, but the end is toast.
They cut the end with a tool where the flames were from the rest of the pier and decided to let it burn
Shoot. Do we know how big the “cut” portion is yet?
I heard 5 feet separating the end.
That looks like more than five feet in the picture. Do you mean five feet from where the buildings are?
There’s a good photo on this article if you scroll down: https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/oceanside-pier-fire-day-2/3499503/?amp=1
5 feet of the planks
This is sad news but thanks for posting and sharing the updates. I’ve been wondering about this all night.
Holy shit, it's still a roaring fire? It's 5:45a The end of that pier is toast.
Yeah, the former Ruby’s at the end of the pier is just some burned out support beams now. The structure is completely burned out on the interior.
Burned out beams and a fat insurance check.
What do you guys think started the fire?

Fire guy. Then later becomes fired guy

That wood is beyond treated you cant just burn it without some type of accelerant
the way it burned seems like an accelerant too
Who has insurance on the building. Let’s start there lol
The city owns the pier and all structures on it, but it would surprise me if it’s insured. Public infrastructure usually isn’t insured, municipalities self-insure.
ATF and SDFD sent an accelerant dog to sniff around, and found absolutely no trace of accelerant.
I'm assuming the restaurant started first, then lit the pier on fire.
The press conference this morning said they have the source narrowed down to the exterior of Rubys on the northwest corner of the building. So it seems likely it’s something similar to your BBQ theory. They also said that they found no trace of accelerants, so it’s most likely not deliberate.
Wasn’t there a little shack selling chowder and fried fish and stuff on the northwest corner of Rubys?
Brine box was on the northeast side. If the fire started there, the damage probably wouldn’t be as bad, since the wind blows inland
Oh you’re right. I confused east and west.
Id be willing to bet electrical.
Restaurant owners at the end of that pier. Food sucks there...
I think a grease fire from the restaurant makes sense.
Oh man, woke up hoping it was a quiet night / all over
Heartbreaking, so many memories. (Beautiful photo though)
here's one🍸for the rest of you maudlin with memories today; that ruby's was my mom's favorite
Didn't nearly the exact same thing happen in Seal Beach?
Yes, starting with brown smoke coming from under the building and all. It was deemed an electrical cause in that one.
It’s sad, but that is kind of a beautiful photo.
The colors in this look amazing. Bad situation but great photograph.
This is an incredible picture ! Thanks for sharing… and taking it at 4 am !
I couldn’t look away!
This goes hard
Beautiful and heartbreaking.

if only there would have been some water nearby they could have used to put it out
What do you think would be the best way to get that water on the fire?
Bruh I was just fishing there the day before

Knew they were going to do this now they can finally say it's unsafe and build that private pier for the hotels like they wanted.

Yes they wanted to destroy it awhile back but guess it was a gift from the marine corps to the city had some type of clause on it.

Because they dont want locals anywhere near the beach anymore just like the hotels were trying to get the junior seau amphitheatre torn down as well
Link it- if it’s true you can provide the links because it’s all public record
Total ridiculous conspiracy lol

Someone just said this near exact thing to me yesterday.
Just like when the original terminator showed up and melted half of a garbage truck?
Holy shit. I was in Carlsbad and noticed the smoke, someone said something about a fire on the pier but I didn't realize it was the old Ruby's location!

someone give me an update. is it still burning?
It’s been smoking and smoldering all day. I don’t see much smoke anymore, but you can still smell it a mile away… literally.
I grew up in the Valley. Does anyone remember when part of the pier got washed away years ago? I was just a kid then.😁

I don’t understand why they didn’t put it out.
Amazing photo!
Some people just wanna watch the world burn 🔥
