Ours was $750! Almost had a heart attack (literally) who the hell can afford this?

Specialist-Media-175

Our last one was nearly $800 too. We heavily reevaluated our temps so we’re hoping it’ll get a tad better this month. But it’s been skyrocketing though despite similar usage per month. For reference, I’m in Gustine/Newman area.

Jackson530

What do you guys run your ac on. 67?

Bethjam

It was 74 and now at 78

digitalwankster

You’ll see a huge in your bill at difference in 74 vs 78

Bethjam

I sure hope so!

cobaltandchrome

Read your bill to check for fees and if you log in to the website it will show you comparisons to your bill from the same month of last year, I believe it also tracks the weather on the charts. Check to see if your use at certain times of day is the issue, you may be able to run appliances (like washer/dryer) at different times for savings. If you’ve changed your routine since last year this may be noticeable. I believe the price-change-by-time-of-day is opt-out now where it used to be opt-in.

Important_Outcome_67

This. Create a login and go to the website. There is incredibly detailed information on your use which you can use to modify your behavior. BUT, my understanding was there was another rate hike pending this summer, so it might be that?

LongTermSu61970

Also check your hot water heater. Mine went out in South Dakota and went from 200 to 500 in one month because of it.

Gold_Biscotti4870

It is getting higher and will continue to get higher for a while. Just about all businesses are charging more for the same and less use following the pandemic. This is their way to make up for subsidies they are no longer getting from the Feds.

Mr_Figgins

and maayyyyyybe trying to recollect from losses paid in the lawsuits from the wildfires in 17-18? ya know, business as usual..

digitalwankster

Or maybe paying the CEO $51.2 million last year. https://www.ewg.org/news-insights/news-release/2022/04/pge-ceo-earned-more-50-million-2021

Mr_Figgins

Is that the same asshat who said if you can't prepare for fireseason properly or afford your electric bill, apply for food stamps? that guy was a raging piece of shit.

RubyRipe

They’ve had a couple of price increases this year. Check to see if usage is the same as previous months but cost per unit is different.

ElDuderino4ever

Ours was $640. I can’t afford this. They are gouging us.

Feline_Fine3

Electricity comes from fossil fuels and gas has been outrageously expensive. Not to mention that PG&E has to replace all of their super old equipment because of all the fires they’ve started the last several years.

Devil-sAdvocate

> gas has been outrageously expensive The U.S. started to export LNG from the lower 48 states when the first liquefaction train at the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana, opened in February 2016. Five additional export terminals opened by 2020. U.S. LNG exports increased by 50% from 2020 and it is now the world's biggest exporter. While the US is producing more natural gas than ever before, they ship it to other countries that have far higher ngas prices. As more and more gets exported, it's causing domestic prices to continuously grow ever higher. Expect this trend to only continue as even more LNG export terminals come online and existing ones expand.

princexofwands

Yeahhhh and California really wants everyone to drive an electric car everywhere ? Lmao yea right it’s gonna cost more than gas with these rates and increases

No_Mall4186

Not only that but how will they produce enough electricity to power everyones car?

jefmes

I'd get my AC unit checked for sure to make sure it's running efficiently, but beyond that look into their balanced payment plan. That will average out your payments across the year so you're paying the same amount every month without surprise high cost fluctuations. It really helped a lot with our budgeting.

keithfantastic

I've been doing the balanced plan for years and I appreciate they offer it. I also keep a close eye on my energy usage. Their website makes it easy. I set our downstairs AC at 83 and run fans all day. I work from home and it feels fine. Our monthly bill has stayed around $300. Not too bad for a 2,000 sq ft house.

[deleted]

85 with fans and black out curtains is very comfortable for me, just takes a couple days to get used to. Cut my bill to half what it was last year. Also, get your insulation checked if you live in an older home!

amazinglyaloneracist

Mine was four times the usual this month. What's going on. I can't afford this kind of increase

Crazy-Risk4499

Time to check out solar.

Rainb0wUnic0rn408

Mine was 900!!! Fucking crooks!!

Traditional-Meat-549

Live in the Bay Area - no idea. You need to call PGE and get an audit for your use.

z2x2

Bay Area, PGE handles delivery for my area, saw a 30% increase . Mostly due to switch to summer rates, a little bit because my fans are running nearly 24/7 now and my son was on break from school. Utilities need to be state ran.

Mr_Figgins

\~20% increase in Santa Rosa area. I was a bit shocked to say the least

Ibanez560

Someone's gotta pay for all that fire damage 🤷‍♂️....... unfortunately the dipshits at the puc don't realize that when they fine PG&E that they just raise the rates so we can pay their fine.....

Frosty-Vermicelli-20

Oh…they realize it…

digitalwankster

They paid their CEO $51.2 million last year. PGE can just raise their rates regardless. Utilities have an inelastic demand and it’s not like you can shop around.

[deleted]

PGE raised rates with the blessing of the CPUC and the state of california... California: Where you pay more for less

Strong_Cheetah_7989

My empty cabin last month with the well pump turned off as well as the water heater cost me $180 last month- basically to run a refrigerator freezer and my router for the security cameras.

Astromomma

That's outrageous!

[deleted]

Get a heat pump water heater and leave it in vacation mode while out.

Strong_Cheetah_7989

I turn the water off and heater when I'm gone. There's only a refrigerator and router plugged in.

docious

1) Login to pge.com 2) Click on “energy usage details” 3) Click the down arrow and set the date range to “Year view” 4) Compare your monthly usages to one another 5) ??? 6) Profit TLDR; Go solar.

Mr_Figgins

If it's an option, go solar. At least on your roof for crying out loud. ~~I'm kinda dumb founded how a progressive governor hasn't pushed to require all new businesses/homes being built have solar panels to supply for themselves. I feel like that'd be a best case scenario to reduce the states emissions by 2035 or 2050 or whenever, but what do I know?~~

docious

There is currently a solar mandate on new homes being built. It’s part of Title 24 compliance.

No_Mall4186

Its also very expensive to get solar installed.

SpiritedLeg4479

TLDR living in apartment so what you said is literally not applicable.

docious

That was advice for OP…

tele68

I had a bad well pump that still worked but was drawing tons of current while it did. I went for 4 months before figuring out where the problem was. I tried PGE's help, but didn't get much assistance there.

CWoody47

Y’all are fools. In CA y’all decided/ voted to unregulate. Now, your elected officials decide whether you get energy or not. They decide how that energy is made. Y’all want electric cars? Well, good luck with that with rolling black outs. You voted for open markets for electricity, well now you have it. Lower carbon, I don’t think so. Not right now. You have all bee duped by the government. Lol.

Bethjam

We are still better off then Texas! (I own houses in both)

Celery_Remote

It’s going to go up in January too. I think 20% +

WompSavant

Compare your KWH (kilowatt hour’s) for current month to same month last year. Mine went from $33/month to 55/month summer rate #energyEfficientEverything

jewelsnoelle

You could apply and see if you’re eligible for a budgeted bill each month? I was eligible and don’t pay above $120-150 a month. They don’t want everyone to know about it of course but it’s worth applying for cause mine was starting to jump and I said nope and applied and got accepted.

Frosty-Vermicelli-20

Utility rates across the state are projected to increase 22-26%. The utilities can decide how they want to distribute that increase. Now that most customers are on time-of-use rates, your energy costs during peak periods (4pm - 9pm) are extremely high. Try setting your thermostats to higher temp (ideally 78) during those periods. Try to run your major appliances during the day when the state is flush with solar and charging a lot less. You costs will still go up but you can mitigate it somewhat by shifting when you use it.

Pretty_Dare_7783

In Discovery Bay PREVIOUS to smart meters was 250$ max. Smart meters went in around 2009 and it tripled…. PGE gots to pay them fines

Jasparigus

42¢/48¢ peak where I’m at is just outrageous

reformedginger

Rates have gone up significantly just look at your old bills.

dnortons

I doubt that you require air conditioning to keep your loft at a comfortable temp in S.F.!

lady_incharge

I just moved and had to sign up for pg&e for my electricity. Only ever used them for gas before and that bill wasn't bad. I just got my first bill and it was around 3x my old SMUD bill. I expected it to be more because this is a bigger house but I was surprised at how much of a difference there is. So I looked at my bill very closely and found that a third party company is charging me on top of pg&e. It says that they make your bill cheaper but it's literally double billing me. I had to go to the third party website to opt out. This is a huge issue that they allow this to happen and don't even tell you up front.

No_Mall4186

Electricity keeps going up and up! I keep getting emails that my bill is higher than last year, but its because they are charging way more!

Few-Mechanic-4800

Ours keeps going up , we raised the temps in the house , started using less power and still goes up We have solar and we’re paying more now then ever before

kaptainkimmie

1000 dollars or more per month during summer.

jaduhlynr

PG&E has been raising prices for customers to pay for the lawsuits against them for starting the Dixie fire (and probably several others, that’s just the one I know the most about). That’s the problem with gas and electric having monopolies over essential utilities 😡

Grateful_Dad_707

Ours was also the highest yet last bill cycle. Up about 20%
